right now at 4:30, tracking the storm. rain is moving across the bay area and problems are already popping up from power outages to downed trees. here's a look at the radar, which is lit up. wind advisory also in place for some areas. meteorologist, kari hall, tracking it hour-by-hour. this is "today in the bay." welcome to monday morning. thank you so much for starting your day with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. a look at your slick morning commute in just a moment with
4:31 am
mike, but first let's start out with the forecast with meteorologist, kari hall. how long is it wet weather going to stick around? >> it's going to be a while before this moves out, and we will continue the microclimate weather alert. the rain continues today with some of the highest totals expected to be along the santa cruz mountains and towards the south and east, and we will see a chance of isolated thunder and hail today with lowering snow levels by tomorrow. we're looking at all of these impacts that will continue for us with isolated thunder and hail once again the main threat we will see today. as we get a look at storm ranger right now, it's covered with a study rainfall, and as we get a closer look we can see that there are still pockets of heavy rain up around that area, and then a steady rain as you go from novato to vallejo and to concord. it gets lighter for contra costa county toward the delta, and also spotty rain moving through the tri-valley, and into the
4:32 am
south county where right now we are seeing the focus of some of the heavier rain moving through right now. this is a system not budging anytime soon. as we get another wave of energy coming in later this afternoon into i would say late morning and afternoon hours, we could see an intensity -- the intensity of the winds picking up as well as the rainfall. we're going to be watching this as the storm continues and we'll talk about when the high winds could pick up. that's coming up in just a few minutes. mike, you are tracking three big crashes right now? >> three bigger crashes and a lot of smaller crashes and that's not including the degree debris and downed trees. cones are out. north bay 880, two lanes blocked. that could be up to another two hours until they can clear this crash so there will be slowing heading past the coliseum.
4:33 am
280 southbound is where there was a complete stop of traffic in both directions. looks like they reinstated the traffic flow going southbound, and there are two lanes blocked southbound 280 because of an overturned vehicle as well, and tough to see with the over crossing here, but we can see the soupy and sloppy conditions there. the third one, this is an issue alert by chp for the tri-valley. it's a jackknifed big rig, and we will track that as well. be careful with the conditions out there. back to you. >> very much so. flooding is always a big concern for communities like fairfax. the town has set up these live cameras to keep an eye on the creek which has flooded before. the creek has risen more than a foot so far. some marin county communities have been seeing the highest rain totals, and some businesses
4:34 am
had to close early because of a power outage. >> traffic at a standstill in both directions on u.s. 101 through mill valley after reports that a power line came down across the freeway. ramon perez just finished fueling up and was on his way to get something to eat when the lights went out. >> i was driving off of the highway and on the side road going into in-n-out, and i saw just down the road the power -- the transformer sparked. >> he said he missed his turnoff into the restaurant parking lot because it suddenly got so dark, and the freeway was shutdown for a while and then opened up to just one lane of traffic in both directions. we watched as a pg&e crew member pulled the damaged line from the traffic light on a highway frontage road. there were a few sparks as he cleared the line from a nearby power pole. it did take pg&e a little while
4:35 am
to clear the line and restore the electricity, and the crew at in-n-out left early for the day. the power has been restored around here every since. they have been getting a lot of rain in the storm, more than four inches in some spots. gregory green lives on a houseboat. >> it's a little rocky down there, you know. i have seen it a lot worse. >> it got much worse in forestville after a redwood came down and took out a chunk of the roof, and nobody was hurt. in san francisco people spent time yesterday picking up sandbags at the city's public works yard. normally it's closed on sunday but the city offered extra hours so people could get prepared. flood areas are currently up in
4:36 am
some neighborhoods. today's marianne favro has more. >> we have seen a heavy downpour here the last three hours, and here on highway 17 they put up an electronic billboard warning drivers roads are slick and they need to slow down. drivers navigating highway 17 in a downpour with the santa cruz mountains expected to see the brunt of the storm. >> we get a lot of rain compared to a lot of other places. >> the big concerns? flooding and high winds topping 30 miles per hour. >> i have roofing nails here and i'm going to tack down some of my flashing and roofing material. >> at this hardware store, tarps sold out. >> we see people getting tarps and preparing for the rain and a lot of plumbing just in case. definitely tarps, batteries and water, because everything shuts
4:37 am
down completely. >> great america shutdown its winter event because of the storm. crowds bundled up to check out the holiday displays braving rain and chilly temperatures that felt even colder thanks to the high winds. >> i really am cold. i have three layers of shirts on and my sweater. >> which explains why the hot coco line was so long. but for some, even the heavy rains did not dampen their holiday spirit. >> christmas is christmas. >> if you go there, get one of those hot cocoas. they are great. all bart employees have to be fully vaccinated against covid by the end of the day unless they have a valid medical
4:38 am
or religious exemption. as of last friday 91% of their workers were vaccinated. if an employee gets at least one dose by today they can continue working as they wait to get that second dose. turning back to the storm coverage for you now. a live look at the san mateo bridge. it's a soggy start. do we have a possible traffic break going on there? yeah, a little chp action on your right there. we will check in with mike. he has a look at the morning commute out there and how it's looking. first, let's start out with the forecast. >> the rain is not going anywhere, and it's covering the bay area right now. we can see all the green there and there are pockets of heavier rain but for the most part it's a steady light rain that
4:39 am
continues and the rainfall totals are adding up. as we open up the picture, look at more energy to the north of us off the coast. this is going to be diving down as we go through today and enhancing the amount of energy in the atmosphere which may mean we could see some thunderstorms here. looking at our hour-by-hour forecast, at 7:30 we see pockets of yellow and orange, and that indicates heavier rain. when it turns red that's most likely the potential of a thunderstorm, and we could see that around 11:00 this morning in parts of the north bay and a quick moving line that could sweep from san francisco into the east bay down to the santa cruz mountains by early in the afternoon. we're also looking at the potential for very cold temperatures and we could get hail in the mix here as well and that could cause a lot of problems. mike, you have been watching how all of this affects the road conditions? >> yeah, slippery conditions and dangerous conditions with the wind reported by some of the drivers. here in this sunol area, we have
4:40 am
the alert, southbound 680, and two lanes blocked around vargas. north bay, you notice slowing over here and that's because the truck crashed into the barrier, and they stopped traffic for a couple minutes to clear the debris, so that's the delay heading up through the area. lower the speeds around the bay because of the slick conditions. the accident in oakland has not cleared, and you see the end of the traffic break and it looks like they have cones off from the slow lane that could be blocked for the next couple of hours. we're going to track that. back to you. the queen of christmas not taking any breaks. when we return from the break, mariah carey.
4:43 am

4:44 am

4:46 am
the dispensary. >> thanks. kari hall has been tracking the rain coming down. >> we have a wind advisory that will be in effect until 4:00 this afternoon. gusts could reach 50 miles per hour bringing down trees as well as more power impacts. we'll talk about this and take a look at storm ranger coming up, next. the oakland camera shows you the sloppy conditions on the road and there's still one lane blocked on the nimitz north of the coliseum. the alert calls for another trash in the fremont and sunol area. i will give you those updates, coming up.
4:49 am
right now at 4:49, we are under a microclimate weather alert. as you head out this morning it's very soggy out there. i know we are always talking about this, how much rain have we gotten and how much more is on the way? look at this. mount tam has had eight inches of rain, and marin more than 4 1/2 inches of rain. napa, over 2 inches of rain and a little less in santa rosa. fairfield, almost an inch and a half, and danville, a little over half an inch there, and san josé, .16. it's adding up. we will see where that came from
4:50 am
as we look at storm ranger right now. there are pockets of heavier rain move into the coast and along the peninsula. looking at the bigger picture, there's a lot more moisture that will be streaming in as we go through today, and we will meet up with more energy going to the north. by the time it gets here we could see pockets of thunderstorms, especially late morning into the afternoon. here we are at 11:00, and we see the dark oranges and reds that indicates the potential of thunderstorms or really intense rainfall. when we see it in a long line like this, it could mean really gusty winds and that could be moving into san francisco before noon or around 1:00 this afternoon, and into oakland and concord and continuing to push down the peninsula into the east bay as well as the south bay, and especially the santa cruz mountains when the wind will really be picking up along with the rain. it does get lighter this evening, and then the color starts to change. look at later tonight and tomorrow morning, mt. hamilton,
4:51 am
and some bay area peaks will start to get snow. that snow will continue into tomorrow morning. the rain becomes more scattered and there's a chance we could see additional rainfall and a bit of a break between tuesday and then wednesday the rain is back. we will see that continue into thursday morning. a lot to watch here. as we take a look at our wave action for today, dangerous waves will continue, and we could see breakers from 20 to 25 feet, and additional rainfall totals this week that could be another three to four inches of rain in some spots. and then the sierra, on top of what we measured already, we could see additional snowfall totals going up by the weekend, and we looking at the eight-foot range of snowfall in the mountains of the sierra. the weekend is all clear. that will be our chance to pick up and dry out as well as still
4:52 am
feel some very chilly temperatures. mike, how is it looking in the east bay? >> it looks like this, kari. soupy, sloppy and slow. southbound 880, thing are slowing down. you see the flashing lights. one lane is still blocked and it could be a couple hours until it's cleared. more rain showing up on the radar all over the bay, wet roads and puddling and ponding. northbound 680 we had a traffic break to remove debris. looks like the speed sensors have lit back up. that's the alert chp is giving you for the tri-valley, but our alert for the bay area's wide commute is sloppy and soupy roads. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. back in the bay area, a
