i right now at 4:30, adding up. we are checking rain totals as the atmospheric river makes its way out of the bay area this morning. also, snow in sierra. the rush to the slopes is on. but first, not so fast. a warning from caltrans about that commute. plus, a mask mandate is back for all californians. what this change means for you and when it takes affect. this is "today in the bay." let's hear it for tuesday

morning. >> i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. let's look at the commute, because it's still raining but first let's get to the forecast. >> we're just trying to get you ready for the day. it's still pouring in some spots but more of a scattered shower compared to yesterday at this time. we will see this rain starting to taper off as we go into the rest of the morning. as we go into this forecast we are going to see some of these showers starting to move off towards the east and also push to the south as we will see some clearing, much more spotty rain but there's still a chance as we go into today and even snow on some of our bay area peaks. you may notice one or two spotty showers out there, and some clearing in spots but a chance of isolated showers and brief

heavy downpours will continue into this afternoon. mike, you are starting with the slick roads in san josé. the camera is dark here, but you can see that. there you go. look at that mist kicking up behind the cars, and san josé, much like my drive was as well. 101 to south 880, they had to close it and clear the vehicle. a smooth drive right now again. this stretch northbound 280 shows a little slowing. tapping the brakes. why? look at the radar activity kari is talking about. more rain is coming to oakland. we will check on that, and a crash coming up. back over to you. happening tomorrow the state will once again require mask in all indoor public places regardless of your vaccination

vaccinated. half moon bay, people had to dig out a clogged drain. this is sending the water on to their property and into their garage. this is on main street. the sierra is being blanketed with much-needed snow. it has been a difficult few months for the tahoe region. now a bit of relief and people in the bay area are taking advantage of it. >> this is what the lake tahoe region has been waiting for. lots of snow falling overnight and more is coming -- >> we have seen anywhere from five to seven inches on the lake. at the resort, most of the

be careful out there heading through pittsburg and byron. you see the affects of the rain, kari, the leftovers, slick roadways continue. let's talk about how much rain fell. this is my favorite time of the morning. pretty impressive with mount tam getting over 11 inches of rain with this stoerplg storm. the berkeley hills, six inches there. we see more of the rainfall totals from mount diablo, five inches of rain. palo alto getting over an inch. also an inch and a half in san josé. as we look at the rain coming down, we will add up more of the

rainfall totals for today. the rain is becoming more spotty as we are seeing some breaks here and there. that will be the trend today. here we are at 8:00, we see rain chances in parts of the north bay which could be heavy at times but a lot more breaks. by 1:00, one or two spotty showers, and we could see snow on mount hamilton go into today as the temperatures continue to drop. it will be a chilly day with a chance of showers, so keep the umbrella close bye. our next round of rain continues tomorrow morning through thursday morning, and we will have a dry weekend. this year in san francisco we have measured over 11 inches of rain, and looking at last season in total, we got below nine inches and that was for the whole water year, so we are off to a good start here. looking at the sierra, we are looking at additional snowfall totals at two to three feet possible. it's going to be a nice change

that we are going to see a good snowpack there go into the weekend. we are still going to see unsettled weather. the trend will be for the rain to taper off. more rain moving in tomorrow afternoon into thursday morning, and we are dry for the weekend and it will reach into the low and mid-50s. more rain in the forecast for sunday into next week. we are not done once again. looking at temperatures in san francisco in the mid-50s. off and on rain but dry for friday into saturday. now let's turn to our climate in crisis. we're talking about the atmospheric river, and that's the flow of moisture from the tropics and enhances the moisture we are seeing. that's a atmospheric river. with climate change we expect fewer atmospheric rivers in the future, and the ones we do see could be longer and wider and have more than 50% more rain. with the higher chance of the

climate change affecting our atmospheric rivers, we could see long swings from drought to flooding. we go from hot and dry summers and more frequent drought to less frequent storms but they will be more intense. warmer air boosts the moisture capacity in the atmospheric rivers, and that means we go from having a hot and dry summer to these extreme storms that we see. then when we do see them happen, they are wetter and warmer and that could mean in some instances more of that bay area rain, but less sierra snow. we can make a difference in this by making substantial cuts in gas house emissions. you can find this story as well as more on our website.

go to nbcbayarea.com and click on climate in crisis. marcus and laura. >> thanks, kari. the california department of justice will investigate an officer-involved shooting that ended with the suspect being killed. this happened friday afternoon when antioch police got a call of a man with a rival shooting at cars and homes. the man started a fire in the garage and then tried to leave and that's when he was shot. a california highway patrol officer died from complications of covid-19. he died on december 8th. he was 53 years old. he joined the highway patrol in 1975. he survived by his wife and three children. flags at the capitol will be flown at half-staff to honor warren. in a statement from governor
