getting ready to wow the crowd. she's got a whole concert outside. we've got a bunch of people vaccinated and ready. >> the huge crowd is going around the block this morning. we have some breaking stories to bring you this morning including the ongoing work of rescue teams in kentucky. >> more than 100 people remain unaccounted for this morning four days after those devastating tornados. we'll take you there live. also ahead, breaking news in the covid fight. just coming out moments ago, pfizer saying its antiviral pill, if taken early enough, can drastically reduce the severity of the virus. that is one of the things we'll talk about here in studio with the director of the cdc with new information just breaking this morning on the prevalence of the omicron variant here in the u.s. but we start with that breaking news on the capitol insurrection. the house committee investigating the january 6th siege voting to hold former white house chief of staff mark meadows in contempt of congress. we are also seeing text messages sent as the riot unfolded

between meadows, donald trump jr. and even fox news hosts. nbc's senior congressional correspondent garrett haake has details on this. hey garrett, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. despite the unanimous vote to recommend holding mark meadows in contempt of congress last night, the committee may still never get his actual testimony. but the text messages among thousands of pages of documents that they have received from donald trump's top aide put him at the center of the effort to overturn the election results and then to stop an attack on the capitol. mark meadows may be refusing to talk to the committee investigating the january 6th attack on the capitol, but his text messages tell the story of trump allies desperate to stop it. republican committee member liz cheney last night reading texts meadows received, including repeated texts from donald trump jr. urging action. >> as the violence continued, one of the president's sons texted mr. meadows, quote, he's

got to condemn this [ bleep ] asap. multiple fox news hosts knew the president needed to act immediately. he is destroying his legacy, laura engram wrote. quote, can he make a statement, ask people to leave the capitol, sean hannity urged. >> reporter: other texts unveiled by the committee appear to show meadows at the center of the effort to overturn the election results. before the attack, one message from an unnamed lawmaker suggest the vice president should throw out some electoral votes. on the day after the attacks, another text reads we tried everything we could in objection to the six states. nothing worked. meadows responding to the contempt vote overnight. >> my part, i've tried to share nonprivileged information. but truly, the executive privilege that donald trump has claimed is his to waive. >> meadows' attorney says he won't testify citing executive privilege invoked by mr. trump

calling the committee's contempt process unjust, unwise, and unfair. we've reached out to fox news and to donald trump jr. for comment on their text messages, but haven't heard back. the full house plans to vote today on that contempt recommendation and after that it will be up to the department of justice to decide whether to charge meadows. meanwhile, it has been exactly one year since the first americans received a covid vaccine but a troubling picture remains, the u.s. now topping a million cases and a total of 800,000 deaths there is encouraging news, just out on a potential new tool in the fight that could be on the horizon. we've got a lot to talk about live with dr. rochelle walensky in our studio. let's go to sam brock with the details this morning hi, sam, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we start with that breaking news, pfizer releasing the results of its antiviral pill which it says drastically

reduces the amount of deaths and hospitalizations if taken early enough even if approved that pill is not coming before christmas as so many families getting together at homes and restaurants amidst a slew of new rules. there could soon be a new weapon in the battle against covid. pfizer just releasing research on an antiviral pill it says reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by 89% if taken within three days of the onset of symptoms. an fdaed review is likely weeks away as cities and states across the country are rolling out new rules to try to corral covid now. from california reimposing an indoor mask date mandate, to philadelphia, matching new york city phasing in proof of vaccine fo all indoor diners including kids as young as 5. >> this will help reduce the spread of covid when people are enjoying our city's restaurants. >> reporter: covid cases climbing higher, in florida up 80% in two weeks as testing

lines grow, so does the confusion from indoor etiquette. >> some you don't have to wear your mask and some you do. >> reporter: to travel. >> i don't understand why we need to get tested if we've been vaccinated that makes no sense to me. >> reporter: with christmas around the corner and get-together driving new infections, here are some essential guidelines to keep in mind consider self-testing before joining indoor gatherings with others who are not in your household. in general, you do not need to wear a mask in outdoor settings unless it's crowded or you're around unvaccinated people indoors, avoid poorly ventilated spaces and do wear a mask if the community has high transmission. as for making that trip in the first place, the government recommends delaying travel until you're fully vaccinated, but if you're not, get tested before and after. for many family members, it's risk versus reward >> are you nervous about seeing family for the holidays knowing what's going on with covid >> a little bit. >> why did you decide to go anyway

because i miss them. >> reporter: so many people i spoke with expressing that exact same sentiment some concerning news from the nfl, 37 positive cases of covid alone on monday. that is despite, savannah a league-wide vaccination rate for players around 95% savannah, back to you. >> thank you joining us now is th director of the cdc, dr. rochelle walensky. good to see you here in studio >> good to see you we are hearing about the spiking numbers and it's concerning and now we're wondering how prevalent is the omicron variant here so what do you know? we've got some news this morning. >> we do right now i would just say we still have about 120,000 new cases a day and the vast majority of them are still delta. here's some new news about omicron, though. we've seen it now in about 33 states, 77 countries, worldwide. new data out of the cdc today will demonstrate that we are now detecting it in our genomic surveillance here the rate of about 3% across the nation and

about 13% here in new jersey and new york >> is it more transmissible? is that the deal >> it is it is more transmissible and we're seeing that in our countries as well. that it's rapidly becoming the more predominant strain. i want to emphasize we have the tools. >> let's get to those and try to get these facts out. how much more transmissible? do you have any metric, five times more, two times? do you have a sense of that? >> we are still -- the science is still evolving, it's still early but what we're seeing in some of the other countries is doubling times of about every two days or so so really rapid increase in the amount of omicron that's out there. >> there's a study just out out of south africa that goes to the question of how severe the illness from omicron is. and it suggests hospitalizations are down about 29% with omicron. so perhaps it doesn't cause as severe a disease does that sound right to you >> we're starting to see early data demonstrating some

decreased severity, shorter lengths of stay, exactly as you said, fewer people on oxygen, fewer people in the icu. i want to emphasize if you have more and more people who have disease, even if you have fewer people that get sick from it, you still have a lot of people getting sick so we want to make sure we keep all those prevention measures, vaccinations, boosting -- >> i think what's confusing for people some are vaccinated and boosted and getting omicron anyway or getting the disease anyway. and i think you also -- we used to say that two vaccines means that you're fully vaccinated should we bump that up three vaccines you have to be boosted to be fully vaccinated >> what we know about variants the more mutations you have, the more immune boost you need in order to combat them that's exactly why we're saying their variant has a lot of mutations. we want to make sure we have as much immune protection as possible get the vaccine. if you haven't get yet if you're eligible for a boost get that boost because you will have more protection.

>> cities and states, local governments, companies, people are saying i'll set up the rules, you have to be fully vaccinated to walk in my shop. is fully vaccinated two doses or should it be three doses pfizer is telling us against the omicron variant there is a dramatic reduction in protection if you only have two doses should fully vaccinated come to mean three doses >> that science is evolving just right now. how well does boost working -- how does the boost work against delta and work against omicron and as that science evolves we will continue to follow that question >> we have this breaking news about the pfizer company having a pill now, that if you take it within the first three days, it may actually make a difference how do you think that is going to factor into what we're facing now? >> so another great tool in our toolbox, right but first i want to say the best way to protect yourself against covid is to not get it in the first place. that is to get vaccinated and boosted. if you do think you have

symptoms of covid though, this pfizer pill, should it move through the fda swiftly, will be another great tool, but we need to diagnose people early if you have symptoms go and get tested so that you can get diagnosed and potentially be -- have this pill available. >> we're all looking forward to seeing our family over the holidays, especially after last year, a lot of folks didn't get to do that what do you do even if you're fully vaccinated, you're fully boosted, do you need to wear a mask? i don't think people have a clear picture on how to conduct themselves and try to lower that risk >> we want people to be together because they weren't able to be together last year so get yourself boosted, vaccinated, get your kids vaccinated if they're eligible, get yourself boosted and we have ten days until the holidays. let's do everything we can to practice those prevention and mitigation measures now. masking indoors, keeping your distance, getting your hands washed, doing all of those things now and making sure that the people that you're going to gather with are doing those things, as well. >> do you think people should test before they get together?

>> that was exactly my next thing. if you twhants extra reassurance, always a good ideas to test before you gather and mix households >> we could go on for two hours, but it's nice to have you here thank you so much. >> we appreciate it. thank you. now to those historic and devastating tornados throughout the south and midwest. rescue teams in kentucky still looking for more than 100 people who remain unaccounted for, but there are also inspiring stories of hope beginning to emerge. nbc national correspondent tom llamas is in mayfield, kentucky, for us once again. hey, tom, good morning >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning to you we were with search teams yesterday as they were climbing mountains of rubble searching for any signs of life. i wanted to show you this home just behind us this is likely what so many experienced the night of the tornado. their entire foundation ripped apart and their car completely totaled so no way to escape. this morning, we are hearing from survivors who are describing to us on camera what it was like to survive being

residents struggling to buried alive from bowling green to mayfield, kentucky, officials struggling to comprehend a path of destruction stretching more than 200 miles. when you see this what do you think? it's just mind blowing that a tornado could do this to this small town >> reporter: dozens confirmed dead, a toll only expected to rise >> of the ones that we know, the age range is 5 months to 86 years. >> reporter: good samaritans rushing in to help. >> is there any way we can help you out? >> reporter: as folks pick up the pieces. >> i've been a lot of places and this place is devastated there's a lot of need out here, so anything can help. >> reporter: in hard hit mayfield, kimberly hendrickson is struggling with nightmares. >> every time i close my eyes i wake up thinking i'm buried again.

i've been trying to deal with that >> reporter: kimberly and her daughter survived after being buried under the debris of mayfield's candle factory. she said everyone was told to go back to work after the first the first tornado warning went off. >> did anyone give you the option to go home after the first alarm. >> no. >> do you think that was a mistake? >> yes they should have let people who wanted to leave leave. the whole building came down on us >> reporter: a spokesman for mayfield consumer products calling the allegations untrue, adding, the company has a covid policy in place that allows employees to leave any time they want this morning the candle compan saying eight of their workers have died, but 102 survived and according to their records, no one else is missing. in illinois, osha is investigating what happened inside this amazon warehouse in edwardsville, torn in half by an ef-3 twister larry was one of six people killed as the tornado approached, he texted his

girlfriend. >> he was like, amazon won't let us leave he's like, i'll be home after the storm. >> reporter: larry never made it home amazon said sirens alerted employees inside to take cover in protected areas and emergency protocols were followed correctly. still, some stories of hope. delivery driver craig yost was trapped underneath a 40-foot tall concrete wall rescued by first responders. >> it went from i had a little room to none i started to -- started to crush my head at the end and being able to even just talk to, let alone hug and kiss the people that i love, was amazing >> reporter: just one of the many survivors sharing their story this morning you know, we're here in mayfield, kentucky and when look around you sort of have to ask yourself, can this even be rebuilt? this town has been around for 200 years and i was speaking to someone who lives here yesterday and i asked them, i said,

right now. we've also got wind alerts stretching from los angeles all the way to wisconsin for 56 million people these winds are going to be a big factor in this storm as it makes its way across the country with wind gusts getting up to tropical force winds, from omaha, topeka, amarillo, st. louis, we're looking at very strong winds heavy rain, could be flooding down in southern california, 4 to 6 inches of rain possible and also expecting to see 1 to 3 feet of snow through parts of the sierra and cascades as this system makes its way to the east that storm system stays out there but makes it ways into the mid section of the country, but today december warmth. we're going to look at that in a bit. sunny and mild along the eastern seaboard. let's get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

many are still rattled and wondering exactly what happened to a woman in her 20s that caused her to plunge into the ocean in the middle of the night. this morning the "miracle" cruise ship sits in port, a floating scene now under investigation. pictures of broken glass and a bent metal divider on a deck the only evidence seen publicly after a woman plunged from a state room balcony nearly ten stories into the water below in the middle of the night. the woman still hasn't been identified, but passengers say she was traveling with her boyfriend and a family member. rattled ship mates were told they were told a security camera had captured her fall. >> i couldn't believe something happened to her. a sweet young lady sweet soul she's gone >> reporter: the fbi now investigating as to whether this tragic incident was an accident or foul play, releasing little information on what they know. >> it's scary. i hope they found out, did she jump was she distraught was she pushed i want to know what happened she's too young.

>> reporter: patricia taylor says she met the woman on the three-day cruise from long beach to ensa nada, mexico >> this young lady is only 25 years old with a baby, a young child. that baby is never going to see his mom. >> reporter: the coast guard and mexican navy spent 31 hours searching, but couldn't find her. passengers say they saw search boats being lowered after the alarm sounded. >> it went out on the balcony and looked and saw immediately they were throwing life preservers out and probably about 30 minutes after that they lowered a life raft. >> reporter: experts say overboard incidents aren't as rare as you might think. >> in 2018, there were 25 people overboard. in 2019, there were 29 people overboard. >> reporter: a 2010 law requires cruise ships to mount advanced overboard systems like this one seen here that uses infrared cameras to detect when something falls off the ship, but there's been little to no regulatory enforcement. carnival cruise has not said

united states. after that, you may have to pay a hefty premium if you want your presents to arrive by christmas. but there are other ways t make sure that's gifts get there in time and i have some tips to help you save money. with 11 days to go before christmas, now is the time to get your packages in the mail. according to ship matrixes an average of 90 million parcel will be shipped every day this holiday season the nation's biggest shippers ramping up to meet demand. i recently saw how the united parcel service and united states postal service are preparing for the rush i toured this state-of-the-art facility where automatedscannin packages while conveyor belts and driverless vehicles prepare them to be loaded on to trucks for delivery. after weathering millions of complaints in 2020, u.s. executive vice president jackie strocko told me the agency started hiring seasonal workers six weeks earlier than last year. some 40,000 additional employees

at facilities across the country. >> we've made considerable investments in our people, in our facilities and in our package sortation equipment. >> reporter: fedex has added new sorting facilities nationwide and what it expects to be its biggest holiday shipping season ever. with those investments, the three major carriers say they can only handle so much volume. usps and fedex say the deadline for domestic ground shipments to arrive by christmas is tomorrow, december 15th. if you miss that deadline they offer express services but that will cost a premium. for envelopes and letsers, postal service first-class mail must be sent by the 17th, the more expensive priority mail the 18th and priority expressed must be shipped by december 23rd. if you missed the fedex ground deadline, the fedex saver deadline is december 21st. two day delivery must be shipped by 292nd and serious procrastinators fedex same day must be shipped by the 24th, not the 25th. ups doesn't give a deadline but has an on-line calculator.

if you ship now it shows most ground deliveries will arrive in five days or less. they also offer more expensive three day, two day and next day delivery options. no matter how early you ship, some packages will still get damaged so always a good idea to put a slip inside the package with the two and from address and that way if any of the materials get destroyed, the shipper will still know how to get your package where it needs to go. before you ship get estimates to compare rates and the postal service offers priority mail, flat rate shipping boxes starting at $7.95. if you miss the deadlines online retailers may be able to help you out. the big ones like amazon, best buy, walmart, they're offering free two day, one day and sometimes same day shipping. in a jam consider "bopus," buy online and pick up in store. >> "bopus" still a thing. >> buy online and pick up in store. i know we want to keep track of what packages make it there. is there a way to bring it all together.

this la nina pattern makes an active storm track from the rockies right on into the midwest. as we saw, this la nina pattern brings up a lot of moisture out from the south. that's warm, moist air. as you can see, this is the area that is seeing an increase in a significant increase in la nina winter tornado activity all across the mississippi river valley. also warmer conditions. and, in fact, we're going to be seeing some record breaking temperatures over the next 48 hours. look at denver. 18 degrees above average at 62. kansas city, 64. dallas, 75. houston, 80. chicago, 53. tomorrow we're looking for records from rochester, minnesota, down to dallas, amarillo, little rock, dozens of records are likely. but then we've got a big, big cooldown coming in. bismarck, by friday, you're going to be 17 degrees. minneapolis, 21 on saturday. chicago, you'll be at 34 degrees. cleveland, dropping down from 62 on thursday all the way to 43 on

standstill >> when i dialed 911, this lovely lady picked up. she was like, 911, what is your emergency? i'm like, i don't know, i think i'm in labor >> she's just screaming. what i told charlotte was, that everything that she's feeling her baby is feeling. i didn't want her baby to go into distress. that's why i kept telling her, take deep breaths. >> contractions were coming two minutes apart. and it was to the point that i couldn't bear it any more. she was very calm. so that kept me calm >> i just told her, listen, you're going to see your baby sooner than you think. >> realizing the ambulance would not make it in time, alesse advised charlotte to pull over >> she told me to position myself in the car, move the seat back push yourself all the way to the edge of the chair. put your legs up prop yourself and make a way for that baby. >> once she felt the baby's head, i told her, the next step is very important. i was like, you have to get the rest of the baby out she gave it a big push and then
