how are things looking now? >> a higher impact for evening commutes. right now, 43 degrees around walnut creek, and the main affect with our incoming storm will be dropping down the coast into the afternoon, so you will notice the wind picking up. highs in the low to mid-50s. wind and rain on the increase tonight. north bay has seen the highest impact for your evening commute than all areas heading towards midnight. you may feel the impact of the mask mandate. today in the bay's cierra johnson is inside a north bay gym. cierra, there's a lot to follow. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, definitely a lot to keep track of. even coming to the gym, there was confusion with some of the

guests of where things stand this morning. take a look at your screen. as it stands right now, gyms, offices and churches in san francisco, alameda, contra costa marin and sonoma can let those members go maskless, because they were allowing individuals that received their vaccinations to go maskless, and in counties that had not already relaxed their mask rules, they will have to continue to wear their mask. >> it's a little harder, just because when your breath gets heavy, it starts to get harder to breathe through the mask. >> i never took my mask off. very early in the pandemic i lost a very close family friend to covid-19 so because of that i feel much more comfortable wearing mine. >> reporter: the state also had

a couple recommendations ahead of the holiday season. they are urging folks to get tested before attending those celebrations and if you are traveling to california get tested within three to five days of your trip. back here, you can say folks walking in, some with a mask and some without a mask and that's because we are in marin county, one of the counties where they previously have been allowed to go maskless because they had that proof of vaccination. if you are in one of the counties where the new rules do apply, you want to check and double-check that you are, in fact, in that county and you are able to follow instructions there. we are live in mill valley, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> i am impressed with how many people are up and exercising already this morning. thanks so much, cierra. the world health organization is sounding the dvz abo omicron variant. it says the variant is spreading at a rate not seen with any previous variant.

just a bit. first, we have to get a look at the forecast. rob mayeda with a look at the forecast. how are we shaping up? >> right now a chilly start. we did see on the golden gate bridge camera, and seeing this around the santa cruz mountains as well. the main event with the next storm system working its way down the coast. the most significant rain should be in the north bay, and light rain showers around the rest of the bay area. 11:00 tonight we begin to see the rain rates picking up in the south bay. today will be fairly cool. wind will pick up, and highs in the low to mid-50s today. rain moving in for the evening commute. now for a check of your commute around fremont, here's mike. yeah, speeds near fremont and 880 are fine, and the

slowing cleared here. this is counter commute so there was good recovery. now we have more volume of traffic coming this way into fremont along the tri-valley and east bay. but things are moving smoothly. and this may affect your approach toward the transition, and most of your commute coming in out of the tri-valley toward silicon valley. contra costa county shows typical slowing on highway 4. no surprises for highway 37 in the north bay. we have the backup with the metering lights turned on. >> getting busy out there. thanks, mike. coming up, a critical holiday shipping deadline. from here on out you will have to pay more to make sure those packages arrive on time. you are not going to see these numbers move much at all. that's because the fed has a

of the hill tops, so it will be breezy. the rain will start to move south and the wind speeds should come down this time tomorrow morning as the storm system moves out. as we look at the storm ranger doppler radar, light showers approaching 17, and we had snow flurries around mount hamilton this morning. starting up in the north bay around lunchtime to midafternoon, you are getting into the rain and light showers to the south and then the main event for the bay area should be around sunset tonight. you can see things here at 11:00, cold air and could have hailyimnç

friday and saturday we catch a break. sunday we get back into the rain at times, and then notice monday, tuesday and also wednesday, pulling up moisture out of the south. it's another atmospheric river connection. if you are on the coastal mountains or the north bay especially, pay attention to the forecast. looks like it will stay active all the way through christmas eve. if that's on your christmas list, a lot of sierra snow and rain, there's a lot of it showing up here in the 7-day forecast. rain on the increase in the north bay in the afternoon and then tapering off this time tomorrow morning. a nice break comes in friday and saturday. then back to the stormy weather sunday through the middle of next week. mike? >> you are watching our

been under investigation for more than two years now. the sheriff and her top aides are accused of accepting gifts. the final count akaouss of sheriff of failing to cooperate in the investigation involving an injury to an inmate during transfer. >> charges like these can't but help undermine the public's trust in law enforcement and public institutions, and mostly it's sad that it came to this. >> i was at a press conference where sheriff smith said she was not ready to retire her as the supervisors were urging her to do. what happens next?

like last january. a covid vaccine mandate fast approaching for students in the east bay school district. bob redell is live. important today even though the mandate will not kick in until next year. looks like we are having issues with his microphone. we will get back to him in just a minute. san francisco with the first of its kind measure to boost benefits for low income workers. supervisors yesterday approved paid sick leave for home workers, including cleaners, nannies, gardeners and caretakers. it will affect some 10,000 workers.

employers pay one hour of wages into a fund for each 30 hours of work. it's 6:34. taking a live look at the skyline in san josé and the south bay this morning. a clear start. it's a chilly start as well. grab a jacket, sweater, coat, maybe layers before you head out the door. i know people back east make fun of california, but it's cold. >> it is cold, by our standards, bay area standards. we're seeing 30s and 40s outside. a few spots in the area with a few scattered showers. we have snow at mount hamilton. that's legitimately cold. a few of the flurries moving off to the east. [yaí stays in the north bay, then after 7:00 tonight we will begin to see that rain spreading to the south. highs today with increasing clouds, increasing wind, and we're staying quite cool. in the north bay, you will want an umbrella and hang on to it.

highs today in the low to mid-50s, and rain increasing heading into the night. let's see how your commute is shaping up in palo alto. >> yeah, hang on to the wheel, rob. 101 moving smoothly. we had a little slowing around marsh and then things cleared up. maybe crews clearing from this portion of 101. you see the green sensors. great drive across the dumbarton and san mateo bridge. here a little more volume, and that's traditional in the east bay. this might slow you down a little bit on the shore highway. these crashes scattered around and they are all counter commute except for that getting over to the airport. this one is getting away from the bay bridge. i am tracking it. everything is standard on the

map. back to you. bob, talk to us about what is going on with the mandate because it does not kick in until next year. >> yeah, a couple weeks from now. contra costa unified is requiring students 12 and up to be vaccinated by january 3rd of 2022, however the district is saying in order to meet the mandate students should be getting their second dose today, by december 15th, and we reached out to get an update on how the vaccinations are going for the kids and never received a response. the mandate is the first for students and teachers. the teachers' union told us beginning of december 99% of the teachers were vaxxed, and as of

december 2nd, it was 85% of all staff, not just the teachers, were vaxxed. down south in l.a., students 12 and up in the los angeles unified school district were supposed to be vaxxed by this sunday, but they delayed the enforcement of the mandate until the fall of 2022. this is an order to prevent 30,000 students from being forced to online instruction. they consider the fact that the vaccination rate among students is already at 87%. in the north bay, marin county schools are taking a major step in preventing an outbreak. they will hold out 47,000 rapid covid tests, and this is for them to take home during the holiday break. according to the paper, they are expected to use one of those

folks by habit threw on their mask, and a bit of reversal of the mask mandate statewide that goes into effect today. it's a little confusing. we'll break it down for you. take a look at these screen. these counties you see on your screen right now, san francisco, alameda, contra costa, marin and sonoma, they are allowed to let their guests go maskless at gyms, offices and churches, and they are being grandfathered in, but counties that had not already relaxed that masking rule, those individuals must wear mask at all indoor public places. the state also issued a couple recommendations, and as we approach the holiday season, they are urging folks to get tested before holiday gatherings, and if you are traveling to california, get

we saw it with hurricane sandy, and not so much with the hurricane that hit puerto rico. but we are seeing it today. congress held a vote last night and nearly every republican voted no, but an earlier vote where republicans participated, notely mitch mcconnell, cleared the way for them to lift the debt ceiling. not doing so would cause the u.s. to default on its debt. economists say it would possibly create a worldwide recession. the debt ceiling allows us to pay back money, we, republicans and democrats, already spent including money spent during the trump administration. the house found mark meadows in contempt because he refused to answer questions from u.s. lawmakers. here he is answering questions from news max, and he answered questions from fox the day

before. meadows becomes the second found in contempt after steve bannon. the justice department charged bannon, and it's the doj that levels those charges. before he refused to answer questions, meadows turned over a huge number of white house records, including text messages from january 6th. we read some of those to you yesterday, and here's more from liz cheney. >> one quote said, we are under siege here at the capitol. another, they have breached the capitol. in a third, mark, protesters are literally storming the capitol, breaking windows on doors, rushing in. is trump going to say something? a fourth. there's an armed standoff at the house chamber door. and another from somebody inside

forecast. rob, how is it looking out there? >> really cold in a few spots. temperatures down to 33 degrees. santa rosa, that will wake you up when you step out. 39 degrees currently in dublin. it's in the 40s currently in san francisco. partly cloudy skies. hour-by-hour, definitely jacket weather. we're still in the 40s to low 50s and with increasing clouds today it's going to make it tough for the sun to help us out this afternoon. highs ranging from the 40s to low 50s in the north bay and east bay. 53 in san josé and san francisco by midafternoon. we still have a few lingering showers in the bay area. the break is not going to last all that long as the storm drops down the coast, starting up in the north bay by this afternoon, you will see the rain increasing at times. it could be locally heavy with the evening commute with light showers across the south bay. by 11:00 tonight, likely to be the main event in terms of the

rain and wind in the central bay and south bay, and this time tomorrow the showers will slowly move out as we see clearing skies during the day on thursday. rainfall totals between now and tomorrow night, right there, from 11:00 tonight to just before sunrise tomorrow where the rain totals start to kick up around the santa cruz mountains and the south bay. from there we catch a bit of a break in the action from friday to saturday. if you have weekend plans now, stay tuned, you could see the heavy rain approaching the north bay by sunday, and then more behind that, a atmospheric river again attached to that heading through next week. wind and clouds on the increase. wind picking up and heading into the evening and tapering off for thursday. here comes the break friday into saturday, and then another soaker of a week setting up as we head into next sunday night into monday and tuesday. >> we had an alert over here

the vaccine mandate quickly approaching for one east bay school district. >> bob redell joins us live. the mandate kicks in after the new year, bob? >> reporter: correct, laura and marcus. you are probably wondering what does today have to do with anything? today is the day the district is recommending, telling their students 12 and up, that by today they should have the second dose of the vaccine so they are fully vaccinated by the time january 3rd rolls around. we did reach out to the district to find out how many students have been vaccinated and never received a response. the school district is the first in the bay area to issue a mandate for teachers and students. last tuesday was the deadline for all teachers and staff to show proof they are vaccinated against covid-19. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. santa clara county sheriff facing formal allegations by a grand jury. the suit accused sheriff laurie
