friday morning. good morning. thank you for making us part of your morning. >> i am laura garcia. let's take a live look outside. golden gate bridge, iconic there. it's a cold start to our friday morning. >> it is. you can see a few of the clouds drifting across the golden gate bridge, and coming from the fog in the north bay. it's clear and cold as we get started on this friday morning. our temperatures in san josé in the upper 50s -- or upper 30s, i should say. we are only headed for the upper 50s today. starting out this morning, we are starting out with temperatures in the mid-30s right now, and look at the trend for today reaching 55 degrees for some of the spots in the south bay. the north bay in the lower 50s. as we go into tonight, it could be even colder. be prepared for that, and even freezing temperatures in our south bay counties and the valley, so we will watch that as

the j&j shot. president biden is warning of severe risk and disease and death for unvaccinated throughout this winter. this morning a twin pandemic threat. >> we're looking over our shoulder at omicron and delta is staring us in the face. >> it's more infectious than any previous variant. >> the cdc predicting cases could shoot up 50% by christmas week with a stunning increase in deaths expected to follow. top health officials and the white house hammering the need for vaccines and boosters. >> omicron is here.

it's going to start to spread much more rapidly at the beginning of the year, and the only real protection is to get your shot. >> medical experts say while break through infections are increasing. a booster shot provides strong protection against serious illness and death. >> as long as everybody is vaccinated and eligible to be boosted is boosted, and i think it's quite safe. not 100%. >> in a new change, the cdc is recommending people not get the one-dose johnson & johnson vaccine when pfizer or moderna are available. the j&j shot can cause rare but potentially fatal blood clots that have not been linked to the other two vaccines. the white house covid response team is meeting to answer questions in just a couple hours from now. those advisory have repeatedly said that the u.s. is not headed

some locations? >> absolutely. we have selected offices across the south bay that will be open this weekend for the extended hours, and you can find that information online, and you can print your postage from home and you don't have to come into the post office. >> reporter: that could be a good option for those concerned about the omicron variant and concerned about going out in public and in crowds. there's shipping deadlines for the other guys. if you are using ups or fedex, can you go all the way to december 21st, and 23rd they will provide next day air or same day, and that could get very expensive. if your gifts are staying local, consider curbside shopping if you want to avoid the crowd inside the store, but just

keeps kicking on and it must be cold outside. it will only reach in the low 50s today. we are looking at a dry weekend but it's going to be chilly out there, but still nice for everything that is going on. next week we will be watching more rain, so we will be tracking that and providing updates throughout the weekend. as we look at the fog right now, low visibility in parts of the north bay around novato, but elsewhere it's clear in spots like walnut creek where now we are 38 degrees and will only head for the low 50s for today. mike, how is it looking heading across the bay bridge toll plaza. >> we are seeing folks tapping their brakes, and it's slow from the gates and up to the incline. we see 37 and highway 4 also showing slowing because of the volume, so it's building slowly and gently. novato, half mile visibility at

out there apparently are amazing. you will need that for tonight as our temperatures will be dipping quickly. look at our highs for today, and we are only reaching in mid-50s. 54 for gilroy today, and up to 54 degrees and low 50s in some of the spots like pleasanton today, reaching 53. 52 in oakland. near the coast, in the low 50s as well. we are not seeing a big range in temperatures, and what you are feeling at the coast is basically what you are feeling inland. 53 in novato, and 51 today in clearlake. after this cold start, we have even colder temperatures for the weekend. we will turn our attention to the next storm that will be coming in. we will see the clouds on sunday, but overall the rain holds off until next week. this system is slowing down compared to the previous forecast we have seen, kind of holding off the coast a little bit longer.

on monday, a few spotty light showers and then the bulk of the rain rolling in on tuesday. the rain arrives with an atmospheric river on tuesday, and then gradually starts to taper off on thursday. it looks like most of next week will be pretty wet with the total rainfall of one to two inches. not going to be as strong as some of the storms we have had previously, but it will be beneficial to see additional rainfall and additional sierra snow. we could see one to two feet of snow at the resorts as we go into next week. south lake tahoe getting a couple more inches of snow next week. we are dry this weekend, if you are seeing the holiday lights or have shopping to do, get all that done because it will be nice but chilly. saturday's high temperatures around 49 degrees. next week we keep the cool temperatures and add in the rain that will welcome us into the

coming up in a bit, but first we have to start with meteorologist, kari hall, who is tracking cold temperatures for us. kari? >> yeah, it will be a cool day only reaching into the low 50s, but we will have sunshine. for the weekend it stays dry at this point and we will see our next storm system arriving on monday and continuing through tuesday of next week. we have seen fog around novato and that has beening the extent of the fog for the most part. temperatures right now in the mid-30s. for some spots we have even seen near freezing temperatures in some of our inland valleys. after this cold start we will have a mild day. we will talk about how cold it gets for tomorrow morning and what is ahead when that rain comes in. that's coming up. schools not only here in the bay area but across the nation on high alert. a new tiktok challenge making

it's way urging students to make bombs and take them to school today. >> cierra, one south bay school is canceling classes today? >> yeah, that is gilroy high school and they are doing it out of abundance of caution. it's not just the bay area problem, but districts across the nation sending out letters to parents letting them know what is going on with the tiktok threat, and mill valley doing the same but they will remain open. the school districts are letting parents know right now there are no credible threats, right now just rumors circulating on social media. this is not the first. if you recall a few month ago some school districts dealt with a tiktok challenge where it

challenged kids to destroy school bathrooms. many school districts have announced they will increase security and many parents say they want the challenges to stop. >> a lot of the challenges they throw out there to kids put them in a bad situation. it's exhausting, but, i mean, what can you do? they stay one step ahead of us. >> reporter: tiktok has issued a statement about the rumors and threats of violence at schools across the country, saying, quote, we are looking at law enforcement to look into potential warnings of violence at schools, even though we have not found threats. in texas, they are going as far as having their students leave backpacks at home out of an abundance of caution.

we're live in marin county, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you. happening today, the south bay mother accused of throwing out-of-control parties for students including her son sons is due in court to enter a plea. the 47-year-old o'connor faces 39 felony and misdemeanor charges including child endangerment and sexual battery. in october authorities arrested her at her new home in idaho where she's facing similar accusations. as the omicron variant grows, health leaders are sending the message to everybody to get their booster now. so far all the cases appear to be mild. only 44% appear to have received a booster. >> those who are 50 years and older are at the highest risk

and that's the population we shootly want to make sure have gotten their booster or are planning to get one. >> so far the county is holding back on its plans to tighten health restrictions which, the hope is that more people will get to the booster shot. taking a live look at sfo on this friday morning, and traffic is picking up as the cases of the omicron variant is growing. >> we are going to take a trip down to southern california over the holidays and wanted an extra layer of protection, and that's pretty readily available so no real excuse not to do it. >> be patient if you are planning on traveling as there could be prepandemic levels of

travelers. >> airlines are even adding extra flights, and experts say we could be approaching prepandemic travel levels which could make for crowded roads and skies in the days ahead. despite the growing spread of the omicron variant, 59 million americans are still said to be traveling for the holidays. the busy holiday season expected to kick into high gear between december 23rd and january 2nd. if you are hitting the road, prices at the pump starting to ease, and gas buddy predicting the price will go down about 10 cents from soaring highs during the thanksgiving holidays. and tsa says to try and show up two hours ahead of your flight. if you are bringing a gift make sure it's unwrapped or you could

it's going to be a cold one out there for tonight as we look at the forecast. temperatures are cooling off quickly after sunset. that's perfect for ice skating. this will be going on throughout the month and for this evening we are going for temperatures in the low 50s around sunset and dropping into the mid-40s. it's going to be in the low 40s early tomorrow morning, and probably the earlier the better because as we go through the day, it will be cool and sunny. we are going to also see a lot more crowds out there. we have been talking about all of the snow in the tahoe reswrupb this weekend, and now we have good travel conditions

happy friday. it's a cold start and you will need to grab a warm coat before you step out the door in the east bay. fremont, in the low 40s and some temperatures in the mid-30s. the warm-up slow to happen today, but we will get some sunshine. even colder temperatures tonight and when that rain returns, that's coming up in a few

minutes. a backup at the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights have been on for over an hour now, and still plenty of traffic headed here. we will get an update on the traffic, coming up. happening today governor newsom and the attorney general will appear to unveil a statewide plan. the governor promised for more cities in next year's budget but did not outline a specific plan, and newsom is unveiling his new budget next month. president biden will speak about voting rights today. >> scott mcgrew, you say this could be a sign the president is shifting his focus from build back better? >> yeah, good morning. we reported earlier this week it looked as that vote would not make it to a vote before christmas despite chuck schumer saying it would.

president biden acknowledged it is not happening this year. the president will be the commencement speaker at south carolina university today. the white house tells us in his speech he will talk about the importance of voting rights and that could be a pivot point where the white house moving from build back better to a new priority, voting rights. voting rights is a democratic priority as many red states move to close down polling places or limit mail-in voting, and it's important for the minority vote to democrats if they want to avoid getting pummeled in the mid-term. democrats were hoping build back better could get them votes, but voting rights could also get you both.

families are suing after their children were taken from them to by the u.s. government, and the government lost track of where they put the children. for a while there was talk of a settlement that could be as high as $400,000 per family, and conservative media had a field day and it took some democrats back. now the u.s. government will go to court in each and every lawsuit instead of offering a blanket settlement. the president is taking part in the medal of honor ceremony for three american heroes. two were not there because they gave their lives. the lady on the left there, the widow of sergeant cash that rescued six comrades from ahe, himself, was on fire. i have posted that on twitter.

today. 52 in oakland, and 52 in napa and 56 in san josé. morgan hill reaching 55 and 51 in antioch. we are watching fog in the north bay that will slowly clear out. tomorrow morning we could have freezing temperatures once again. we will turn our temperatures to the next storm system coming in, but the timing on it has slowed down just a bit. we are thinking that it's going to be dry throughout the weekend. then by monday, we start to see more clouds, spotty light showers moving in, but the bulk of the rain with the next atmospheric river doesn't get here until tuesday. we are going to see it come in on the first day of winter, and continuing wednesday as well as thursday and then gradually starting to move out of here. as far as the initial rainfall totals and what we may see, we are looking at the possibility to another one to two inches, ■hñ snow that recently got a big boost. we went to 16% or 19% of normal

over the past weekend to where we are where we should be, and we are talking about digging out of the drought. we need a lot more seasons with above normal rainfall and snowfall. we are going to see some additional snowfall totals next week right before christmas. another foot to possibly two feet up around kingvale. we are going to see once again another good weather system moving in. it's dry for the weekend. we know there's a lot going on including the 49ers game. next week we are gearing up for the rain coming in. so far, mike, looks like it's a friday light commute. >> yeah, it's a preend of the year holidays light. schools had the last day of session today, so that means a lighter commute. right now crossing the bay, that's where all the traffic is. the backup at the bay bridge, gone. highway 4 shows slowing, but not
