i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we will get a look at the commute coming up in a bit. vianey in for mike this morning. kari hall has been tracking the forecast. it's cold out there. >> it is cold and we have a lot of changes coming our way. more clouds moving in today and those chilly temperatures staying with us. tomorrow that storm will be coming in and we will see it with us off and on throughout the week with some rain and heavy sierra snow. take a look at the temperatures and what you are feeling. as you are stepping out the door, we have 30s in the tri-valley in the south bay, and we are two degrees above freezing right now in morgan hill, and we could drop near freezing and this is the next storm system moving in by early tomorrow morning. we will talk more about the timing and how much rain to expect. vianey has a look at our early-morning commute. any overnight crashes have cleared out and green means go

on the traffic map. i did notice a little slowing in the south bay but looks like it could be construction. let's look at the east bay drive time, northbound 880 to marina boulevard, nine minutes. and you won't have any delays from southbound 101 to van ness, just 12 minutes. 4:32 right now. to an interview you will only see on nbc bay area, the bystander that got caught up in the aftermath of an arrest at a retail mall. >> this is one of the security guards that attempted to stop a mob that police say rushed into macy's saturday evening trying to play off the latest retail theft in the bay area. two female security guards try to detain one of the suspects as they tried to run out of the

store, and that's when other members of the group returned knocking one guard to the ground and kicking her in the head, and minutes later this happened. police officers had just arrived and were arresting the suspects security guards had detained. >> you just see two cops running toward him like crazy, and just pushed him to the glass and throw him to the ground like really slammed him hard. for me seeing this as a mother, i was, like, heartbroken. >> she says that's when she decided to get involved if that she appears to be arguing with an officer before they turn their attention to her. the robbery suspect runs away. >> i was just trying to say, just take it easy. calm down. >> san josé pd says she resisted the attempt to arrest her.

>> she slammed me really hard to the ground. you can see -- my face -- it's scraped, my elbow. i will show you, my elbow really hurts badly, too. >> she said she has no connection to the group police were after and claims police went too far, so she will be filing a complaint and hiring an attorney. >> the police are supposed to be a protector of us. with covid infections raging across the u.s., president biden's expected to reveal new strategies to slow down case numbers tomorrow. new infections are the highest they have been in months.

moving 7-day average is more than 64,000 cases. flash forward to the 17th of december, the u.s. added about 156,000 daily new cases. that 7-day average practically doubled to more than 125,000 cases. 4:35. san francisco sports bar may be closed after a week. it closed over the weekend, so the sign on the front of the door says staff tested positive. the owner says if everybody tests negative they may reopen one week from today. >> what often will happen is you get a few folks that are sick and other folks working in close

proximity, you could lose your whole team. >> they are also advising double masking to be prepared for fast-spreading omicron variant. wow, what a gorgeous sight outside all festive and lit up at christmas in the park downtown san josé. what you don't see is how cold it is. you can feel it when you open the door. >> open your mouth and see the fog. >> we have seen 30s out there this morning. it's a cold start. here's a live look out there at walnut creek as we are seeing low clouds with us and temperatures in the upper 30s. we're going to stay here through about 8:00, and then slowly start to see those temperatures heading up, but there won't be much sunshine today. this storm system will be moving in and we can see the wider

view, with the swirl in the clouds, that's the moisture that will be drawn into this with our atmospheric river coming in. some won't make it to the 50s. we will see a high of 49 in concord and 49 in napa and 50 today in san josé. we will talk about when that rain gets here and how much to expect. that's in a few minutes. vianey, any problems with the traffic? >> it's early enough to where we are not seeing any traffic delays or backups, and any fender-benders overnight have cleared up. northbound 101 from highway 85, you are looking at 18 minutes. north bay 280 from 101 about seven minutes, and north bay 85 to highway 101, 20 minutes. a pretty typical commute through the south bay right now. a live look at the silver medal

good monday morning. right now at 4:40, it's a cold start. you can leave the umbrella at home for now. in santa rosa you are stepping out the door at 45 degrees. it will cool down a few more degrees by sunrise and then we will see a mostly cloudy sky today and not much of a warm-up. tomorrow we get ready for the incoming storm. we'll talk more about that and the timing and how much rain to expect, coming up in a few minutes. not much to worry about if the golden gate bridge is part of your morning commute. i will have a closer look at your bridge drive times and how the rest of the bay area is doing in just a few minutes, but first let's check with silvanna on business and tech. good morning. wall street is set to come under pressure this morning. that's on growing concerns about the omicron variant and how it may impact global growth and

travel, and that would include raising interest rates. oil prices are dropping as countries impose new restrictions during the holidays. u.s. markets are coming off a negative week with the dow slipping 1.7%, and the nasdaq 3%. some investors are dumping that on higher rates. meanwhile, tesla is making super charging free at some of its stations during off peak hours during the holidays. those hours are 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. local time between december 23rd and 26th, and the deal is limited to a dozen states including california and the stations are located near major roots and urban centers. the company has vowed to triple the size of the network within

here we go. monday morning. the week of christmas. >> oh, yes. >> a beautiful shot there of the bay bridge this morning. before we get to the traffic this morning, let's get a look at the forecast for you. meteorologist, kari hall, has a look at that. >> christmas in the park, and every day since it started, seems really cold. right now it's 40 degrees, and we will see some peaks of sunshine and just not all clear and sunny throughout the day. our temperatures will only make it in the low to mid-50s here. the 7-day forecast is up at the

bottom of the screen and it shows a lot of rain and this is why. we are seeing the storm system that will be approaching from the north heading into parts of the north bay and spotty light showers late tonight. this is a look at the wider view of the storm system. here's the low that will draw in all of this moisture, and it's going to be another atmosphere river, and it will tap into the moisture and will enhance the rainfall we will see. take a look, even into the weekend for christmas day and the day after we're still looking at some scattered showers. there's going to be a lot of rain this week. it looks like with these early runs of our computer models we can see, an inch and a half in san josé, and possibly over three inches for ukiah, and for sierra we are looking at another week of another snowstorm, but this one not as big as last week. we are looking at about a foot

of snow and that's on top of all the snow we have gotten recently. we will start out winter with wed weather and temperatures in the mid-50s. another system arriving on thursday, and another one behind that on friday into saturday. once again, this very active weather pattern continues with off and on rain. it may not be raining the entire time all throughout the week, but we will see steady light rain that will continue to add up on the rainfall totals that we already had after a couple big atmospheric rivers we have seen recently. we will have updates on that. vianey, what do you see in the commute? >> i am thinking of driving in the rain, and i am from california so you know how that goes, so get your tires and windshield wipers checked. i am going to be checking the chp traffic reports to see what

and then a major break in a case that rocked san francisco in 1978. police were making an arrest. a woman from new york was killed on a trip to san francisco 43 years ago. she was just 15 years old. police reopened that case last year and say new forensic evidence led them to this 76-year-old that was taken into custody with the help of fbi on thursday. san francisco's police chief says he hopes this case sends a message to all victims of unsolved crimes that sfpd will continue to work for justice no matter how much time passes. coming up next on "today in the bay," 12 days of christmas continues with the currys. how he and his wife are stepping in to help fight hunger in the bay area. and then a new smoking ordinance would restrict smoking
