let's start with vianey -- or kari. >> as we look at storm ranger right now, not picking up on any rain and the storm is still to the north of us as we are getting ready for the rain set to arrive by the afternoon. the rain will start to move into the north bay by 2:00 to 3:00, and move into san francisco by 4:00, and there will be off and on showers and gusty winds. another surge in moisture will give us heavier downpours by tomorrow afternoon into thursday. we will see the rain continue even into christmas day. we could see decent rainfall totals over the course of the next few days, and the christmas forecast is coming up in a few minutes. vianey, how is it looking for the morning commute? >> i have been scanning the chp

traffic reports, and there's a new issue to tell you about. this is near the toll plaza, and there's a vehicle that crashed into one of the tolls or near the tolls, and so far the speed sensors not picking up any slowing. also, i did look at the bay bridge toll plaza, and it was likely not near the view of our county but could be something you encounter if this is part of your commute. i will send it back over to you. >> make sure to follow kari and vianey on facebook, instagram and twitter. and then millions prepare to head home for the holidays, and the president will unveil new steps to help communities across the u.s. to tackle the variant.

>> alice barr is in washington for us. this new variant spreading quickly. >> yeah, much faster than any of the variants we have seen. testing has been difficult to come by this week, as well as more pop-up vaccine clinics, and hospitals expected to be overrun by covid patients. president biden will be addressing a nation that looks discouraging like it did in the early days of the pandemic. with omicron tearing across the country, officially the dominant strain of covid in the u.s., biden is addressing the nation about his administration's response, and it comes after he tested negative following close contact with a staffer that tested positive.

the highly contagious omicron variant now accounts for more than 73% of new cases, overtaking the delta strain with startling speed. >> that punch of surge on top of the depleted health care work cases, that's where the mortality goes up. it's going to be the most important thing i am looking for in the president's remarks. >> the first omicron-related death. for the fully vaccinated and boosted, doctors are hopeful omicron cases will be mild. >> we're seeing break through infections in elderly people, and if they are boosted it's turning out to be mild. >> moderna announcing its booster shot significantly increases protection against omicron leaving health officials with this christmas wish. >> we put aside all the political ideological nonsense

11:00. travis tells our affiliate he was diagnosed in july after receiving both shots of the moderna vaccine in april. recently he came down with covid again. he said he took a test out of an abundance of caution and was shocked by the resulted. >> i was convinced i was super immune. the science out there was indicating that if you had covid and you had the protection of being fully vaccinated, you had what was considered super immunity. i do not feel super immune having come down with covid a second time. >> he planned to get his covid shot yesterday but now has to postpone it because he tested positive. some restaurants shutting

down out of an abundance of caution. >> it just seemed the pertinent thing to do considering so many businesses around me that we share clientele and staffing with that had incidents in testing positive for covid, and we felt we would send people home for the holidays, and i didn't want them to send them home with the danger of infecting anybody else. with the start of the new year, san francisco will see fewer cvs locations. the drugstore announced they plan to close several locations in the city. today in the bay's cierra johnson has a live look for us with the closures, and it looks like it's happening in cities outside of the bay area. >> reporter: good morning. while a handful of locations like this one on van ness is

slowing in the city. let's look at the map of where those cities are closing. the first closure will take place january 7th with the 771 market street locations, followed by 581 market street, and 351 california, and so in all 900 stores, or 10% of the company stores are recall walgr announced they, too, were closing some of the locations in the city, and they were citing retail theft, and cvs said it's because of buying patterns, so for customers living near the six locations where they are closing, we are being told your prescription will be transferred

looking to get a lot of rain. storm ranger will be tracking it, and you can see the wider view of the center of the storm there and then the connection that it's drawing all of this tropical moisture into the bay area that is coming all the way from hawaii. that's why they call it the "pineapple express." a lot of rain here starts later today. we see another surge of moisture coming in with some rounds of rain for tomorrow into thursday. also on friday, it doesn't look like we will be done there, we will see a couple more storm systems moving in behind that that will keep rain in the forecast through sunday and possibly into monday. sierra snow, four to eight feet. as we look at some of the models they have been consistent in showing we could see a lot of rainfall, two to three inches, and the sierra has a potential

of getting 99 inches in king vale. we are going to see another boost into the next several days, and even monday we are seeing a chance of rain in the forecast. it won't be raining the entire time, there will be some breaks but we have rain chances in the forecast each day. vianey, hopefully that drive is going smooth. >> we are doing okay with the exception of the east bay. i will get to that in a second. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, and no metering lights on yet, so that's great. and here in oakland near high street it appears a truck went into the ditch and it was a single vehicle crash. looks like the bed of it went into the ditch, and tow trucks are on scene and this is causing slowing through that area. keep in mind. you may want to keep that in

now but it's just to our north and will be arriving by this afternoon with the next atmospheric river coming in. a lot of rain in the forecast as a few storms heading our way. the north bay seeing rain by early in the afternoon, and the evening commute will be wet for many and continues into tonight with more rounds of rain in the forecast through tomorrow as well, as the winds will pick up, too. we will talk about how much rain you may measure coming up in a few minutes. vianey has a couple problems she's tracking this morning. >> 880, southbound and northbound, we are seeing delays. the industrial boulevard southbound lanes backing up through mission boulevard in hayward. i am noticing slowing southbound at 880 if you are traveling from 238 to highway 84, you are looking at 15 minutes. there's also issues that they are working to clear out along

the northbound lanes of 880, that near high street. keep that in mind, the east bay being impacted right now and the rest of the bay area doing okay so far. i'll send it back to you. >> thank you. >> stay updated with our nbc bay area app, to know when the rain will hit and where it will hit in your neighborhood. and gunfire sends people recovering for cover at the height of the holiday shopping. >> yeah, it happened at the mall targeted by thieves this weekend. bob, what are police saying this morning? >> reporter: marcus and laura, san josé police say they will give us an update sometime later this morning about this shooting that took place last night at the oakridge mall here in san josé, which appears to have been an isolated incident. so far, however, officers have not found the shooter or any

victims. this happened around 6:00 last night, somebody started firing a gun just outside the forever 21 store inside the mall. some fled panicked to find shelter within other stores in the mall. police did find shell casings but it's unclear if anybody was hit. the police obtained surveillance video but are not revealing if that reveals anything. and police blocked off entrances and roads while they were searching the mall. >> i had to quickly -- we can't barricade in our store. i had to quickly get the keys and opened the backdoor and quickly evacuated. >> we know there was a shooting and we are still looking for a victim and still looking for a suspect. >> as you mentioned, oak ridge

was the scene of macy's being robbed. other suspects returned and beat up one of the guards. a woman that was shopping at the mall tried to intervene with officers as they handcuffed the suspect. the robbery suspect got away as officers arrested that woman. reporting live here outside san josé police, bob redell, "today in the bay." not far from oakridge mall, workers at the l & l hawaiian barbecue arrived yesterday morning to find thieves had broken in sometime overnight, and they stole two cashboxes but both were empty. and then jury deliberations

later this morning. yesterday was the first full day of deliberations following a criminal trial that lasted more than three months. the jury will have to decide 11 counts against elizabeth holmes. if you are wondering how soon a verdict could be reached, legal experts say there's a lot of information to review. >> they are methodically going through count one, count two, count three, so it's going to take time. >> holmes is accused of knowingly misleading investors about theranos machines that did not work. if convicted she could be sentenced to 20 years in prison. as soon as the verdict comes down, we will bring you the live coverage with legal analysis and break down what is next for holmes. and then new advice from the head of the world health organization organization. >> it's better than a life canceled.

it's better to cancel now and celebrate later than to celebrate now and grieve later. >> good way to put it. there have been more deaths of hiv, malaria and tuberculosis combined due to covid in all of 2020. today in the bay's cierra johnson is live for us this morning. cierra, there's a lot going on today in the east bay. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, it's a busy day, specifically involving showing that proof of vaccination. let's start with the deadline that is looming today and that involves the alameda first responders. that includes paramedics. here in alameda today is the day they have to show proof of vaccinations. individuals have to be fully vaccinated in alameda county, and that booster shot for now is

not required but they will have to wear masks around patients inside and outside and undergo weekly covid testing. city council members in oakland suggest an emergency ordinance, and that is that people at indoor gathering places show proof of vaccination. it would impact everything from concert venues to museums, gyms, senior centers as well as libraries, and that meeting is slated to begin at 9:30 this morning. we are going to keep you updated on all milestones involving not only the first responders showing proof of vaccination, but also the individuals, the oakland city council and where that conversation goes. cierra johnson, live for "today in the bay." health leaders yesterday

in the tahoe area, it's 95% of normal, and the southern part of the sierra at 102% of normal, and the statewide average at 95% of normal. we are going to see this most likely go up as we have another big storm coming in with the possibility of four to six feet of snow, and there could be isolated spots up above 7,000 feet that will get up to eight feet of snow. that will be great to see. we will look at the commute. >> it's smooth to the bay bridge toll plaza, however we are seeing delays for the east bay along northbound and southbound at 880, high street and industrial, clearing out an earlier crash. there's slowing along 101 in san josé, and doesn't look like a

east bay to tell you about, and i'll have an update on that in a few minutes. here's a look at capitol hill where questions are swirling about what is next for the biden agenda, this after a key democratic senator said he will vote no on a critical climate change and social safety net bill. he says the $2 trillion measure costs too much. manchin adds there's nothing in the bill to hold people accountable. the senator is taking heat from the white house and progressives, and he defended his decision on the radio. >> it's not the president, it's the staff, and they put things out that are inexcusable and they know what it is, and that's it. >> chuck schumer said he will still hold the vote of the build back better bill next month.

>> yeah. 5:48 right now. we are counting on the weather forecast as well. a lot of rain coming to the bay area. >> yeah, we know we need it so we will let it come on in with no kphraeupbgts, right? we are under a microclimate weather alert. it's a cold start this morning before the rain gets here. our temperatures in the mid to upper 30s in the tri-valley right now. san josé, 37 degrees. yes, a heavier coat needed. it's going to be a cool day but we will see milder weather for parts of the south bay. that rain will take a little longer to get there. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, and vallejo expect a high of 50, and a high of 54 in redwood city. san francisco reaching 54 downtown. our north bay temperatures reaching upper 40s and low 50s today. yes, it will be cool with the rain coming in. you will notice a couple features here. here's the area of low pressure and you can see the long line of

clouds and the reason why we're calling this a atmospheric river is because of the connection of the tropical moisture clear from hawaii. we can also notice another band of clouds rising northward and that will meet up with the atmospheric river and we will see much more rain into the day tomorrow. as the system moves in, it keeps us in with several days of rain as we will see the showers just off and on, starting late this afternoon into the evening, continuing even into monday of next week. it won't be raining the entire time, but we will have still some rain in the forecast each day. rain totals over the next week could reach over three inches for up around santa rosa as well as dublin and san josé, i don't know if we will see that much rain because we usually get a rain shadow, but it will be decent around here from an inch and a half to over three inches of rain and several storms coming through.

gusty winds expected at about 20 to 45 miles per hour, and the sierra may see four to eight feet of snow going into christmas as well as beyond. take a look at this forecast. highs only in the low 50s. yes, it does look soggy. once again there will be breaks here and there, and then we will see the temperatures staying in the low to mid-50s into next week. vianey has been tracking a couple issues for your morning commute. >> yeah, especially for the east bay. delays are getting worse along southbound 880 at the industrial exit because of a earlier crash they are actively trying to clear. you can see the delays in the orange and red. take hesperian boulevard instead, that's the surface street that runs along the freeway. you can see here, hesperian boulevard. look how we are seeing the
