several days. it's only 42 right now in walnut creek. we are dropping down to 40 degrees around sunrise. we will see these last couple of hours of fall wrap up as kind of a winter feel to it and where we will see our temperatures head to the upper 40s today. as this rain comes in, we will see round after round of rain through the next several days as we get a series of storm systems coming by. we will talk more about all of this in the forecast. that's coming up in just a few minutes. also heading out the door this morning, it's dry now but vianey they want to make sure those windshield wipers are working for the evening commute. >> absolutely. play it safe if you have to get to work. a new crash, this one southbound 101 near the oakland road exit. you can see delays backed up all the way to the 680 and 280 interchange.

variants. president biden set to layout new plans today to increase access to testing and vaccinations as well as backing up hospitals that are expected to be overrun with covid patients in the coming weeks. this comes as a time when many companies are returning to work from home policies. president biden later today will be addressing a nation that looks discouragingly like it did in the early days of the pandemic. >> with omicron tearing across the country, now officially the dominant strain of covid in the u.s., president biden is preparing to address the nation about his administration's response. it comes as the white house announced he tested negative following close contact with a staffer who tested positive. the cdc says the highly contagious omicron variant now accounts for more than 73% of new cases, overtaking the delta strain with startling speed. >> that punch of surge on top of

depleted health care workforces, that's where mortality goes up. this is what i will look forward to in the president's remarks. >> overnight health officials announcing the first omicron-related death, an unvaccinated man with underlying health conditions. >> we're seeing breakthrough infections even in elderly people, if they are boosted it's turning out to be mild. >> booster shots significantly increases protection against omicron leaving officials with this christmas wish. >> put aside all the political ideological nonsense of what gets in the way of doing a good health care job and those that can get vaccinated, get

out of abundance of caution and was shocked by the results. >> i had been convinced that i was super immune. the language out there, the science out there was indicating if you had covid and you had the protension of being fully vaccinated, you had what was considered super immunity. i do not feel super immune having come down with covid the second time. >> he said he planned to go and get a booster shot yesterday and postponed that because now he has coronavirus again. and then according to kaiser health, pregnant women diagnosed with covid are five times as likely to require intensive care compared to pregnant women not infected. those diagnosed are 22 times likely to die. moreover, babies who are born to covid-infected mothers are 60%

more likely to be born prematurely. health officials are urging pregnant women to get vaccinated and boosted. the owners of eli's mile high club in west oakland is closing down due to an abundance of caution. >> it seemed like the pertinent thing to do considering so many businesses around me that we share clientele and staffing with had incidents that they had to close for because of testing positive for covid. we felt we were going to send people home anyway for the holiday season and i figured i didn't want to send anybody home in danger of infecting anybody else. >> but they plan to be back open for new year's eve and will have precautions in place.

cvs announced plans to close several locations in san francisco. today in the bay's cierra johnson joins us live this morning. sounds like it's not just in the city but across the country they will close stores. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. cvs definitely making changes. a handful of store closings are here in the city, including this one on van ness. there's a bunch of cvs locations closing, 900 around the nation will be closing as cvs says the shopping habits of their consumers have changed. this is an outline of where the in beginning january 7th. again, in all 900 stores or about 10% of the company stores

are closing. walgreens announced they were closing stores in the city due to retail theft, and cvs maintains these closings are due to a larger plan, because of changed shopping habits. customers with prescriptions at these cvs location are being notified that those prescriptions are being moved to the nearest cvs. >> it's tough for a lot of those people that say, it's close, i can run and get supplies and -- >> and they are elderly, yeah. taking a live outside at the golden gate bridge, not a lot of traffic through the span right there. one thing we know for sure is it's cold out there. i am ready to put on a jacket in the studio.

>> yeah, every time i sit down i put on my coat. >> yeah, you're lucky. i might come out with a park i heater, laura. we are going to see rain coming in later today. some of the showers just off the coast but we won't see it coming in until later this afternoon. right now the morning commute is dry and that's good, but we will see the evening commute get very wet especially in the north bay spreading into the bay area later tonight. there will be some breaks, but i think there will be times of heavy rain. even as we head into thursday and friday we are still looking at round after round of rain. we are looking at the potential of getting a few inches of rain. we will talk about how much you may get where you live. that's coming up. vianey, you are tracking a couple problems for the commute. >> yeah, east bay is a mess. southbound 880, still seeing

as you are step out the door in novato, it's cold and we will have dry weather for the next few hours. notice rain starts to get here around lunchtime and we will see it continue into the evening commute. we will talk about rain where you live in your microclimate, and that's coming up in a few minutes. 101 from highway 85 a crash causing delays. you are looking at a 34-minute commute. a look at the rest of the bay area coming up. >> thank you so much. a wall street selloff was sparked by the fears of the omicron variant. and there's a drop-off in shoppers the days before christmas. visits to retail establishments were down more than 26% this past saturday, and that's

compared to 2019. year over year retail traffic is still up close to 20%. airbnb tightening its policy on new year's eve celebrations and that's including adding anti-partying restrictions. the company said it will focus on local reservations. last year airbnb added social distancing rules for large gathering, and an occupancy limit of 16 people. tiktok is nipping at the heels of a big rival there. tiktok will be the world's largest social media network next year, reaching 755 million monthly active users. this is just behind facebook and instagram, and it also forecasts

jk rowling was absent who wrote the harry potter books amid a little controversy right now. >> the legacy of that franchise. >> yeah, and it's kind of cute to see those kids grow up. >> yeah, they are adults. they were just little kids, like we all were one day, and now we're big and grown. at least i am the big one here. let's look at the forecast now. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking the cold temperatures. >> yeah, it's going to feel like winter even though we have a little over an hour left of fall and our temperatures feel like it's in the mid-30s right now in the south county. take a look at morgan hill in dublin. the coldest temperatures on the map, 35 degrees and on this last day of winter, we call it astronomical winter because it's caused by the waves, and the sun is shining to the earth and the

way the sun is tilted away from the earth. this is the shortest day of the year. the sun is directly over the tropic of capricorn. so from this point forward our days will gradually get longer after today. we are looking forward to that and rain that's in the forecast that will start later this afternoon and into the evening. we have a couple systems in the works. we can see this swirl of clouds, all the clouds that are drawing in that tropical moisture and that's why we call it the atmospheric river or "pineapple express." we will see several rounds of rain coming in and gusty winds at time, and in the afternoon into the evening and that will continue into wednesday, thursday and friday and christmas day and sunday and

monday, too. as we take a look at our 7-day rainfall totals -- once again, this is coming over the course of several days. possibly two to three inches of rain, and could be closer to five inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. for the sierra, it has been nice to see the big boost we have gotten recently with the sierra snowpack, and an additional four to six feet with some spots around 7,000 feet getting up to eight feet of snow over the next week. take a look at the 7-day forecast. yes, looks like there's rain basically all throughout the forecast, but there will be some times of sunshine in between. temperatures will stay chilly, only reaching into the low 50s. vianey, you're watching quite a few spots, especially the east bay. >> yeah, the east bay is a mess. i have an update for you on the

bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights turned on. oakland, northbound and southbound 880 have been a missed. the northbound lanes, there was an issue there and that has been cleared out. the southbound lanes you will run into a couple accidents along the route near the industrial exit, and that's starting to cause delays. oakland road, the number three lane is blocked so head out now for the east bay and south bay commuters. one of our beloved former colleagues passed away. >> doug more, kntv's long-time anchor died with his family by his side. you may remember doug at the news desk for nearly two decades. he loved helping people behind the scenes and he was a trusted voice in delivering the news. our news family will forever miss doug moore.

building equity for black workers and 2020 was the largest year ever of hiring people of color. and then the nhl now decided to postpone all games tomorrow through sunday. this is with two games still to be played later today. this expands what had been the planned three days around christmas. the league already postponed games this week including two shark home games. >> the dubs last night played at home for the first time in two weeks. iggy was one of the six warriors to be in double digits. covid causing havoc in the nhl. rescheduled games take place today. the cleveland browns were

all ahead in a live report. the fate of elizabeth holmes in the hands of the jury. the reason some believe a final decision could take time. the consequences first responders may face if they are not vaccinated. the new mandates that may start if cases surge. this is "today in the bay." a very good morning to you. thank you for starting your day with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we have breaking news to tell you about. more shaking in the north bay area. want to tell you about the 3.3 quake that hit just over in the ferndale area. it happened about 6:14 this morning. this is a minor one, but this comes after the 6.2 quake that hit yesterday afternoon. so far no reports of any damage or injuries. yesterday's strong quake, that brought down bottles and some books in peoples' homes.

we are under a microclimate forecast this morning and we will get to that as we continue to monitor that quake, and kari hall is monitoring what is happening in the bay area when we talk about the snow in the sierra, and the rain happening here as well as the cold temperatures. >> yeah, there's a lot going on. we are starting out very chilly this morning, a couple degrees above freezing from dublin to morgan hill. 39 in redwood city. after this cold start we get ready for the rain. we have storm ranger powered up and ready. that's the red scanner seeing there picking up showers off the coast. there will be several rounds of rain. by 1:30 we are seeing rain approaching santa rosa, and moving into san francisco by 4:00 to 5:00, and into the east bay around the evening commute and continuing into tonight with pockets of heavy rain and gusty winds that will stay with us

app that will let you know when that rain is hitting your neighborhood. developing right now, gunfire sending people running for cover in the height of the holiday shopping. >> it happened at the same mall that was the center of the weekend macy's robbery. >> reporter: sounds like police will provide an update sometime today about the shooting at oakridge mall. officers have not found the shooter or any victims. this happened around 6:00 last night. somebody started firing a gun outside the forever 21 store located inside the mall. hundreds of shoppers fled, some in panic to find shelter in other stores in the mall while the shooting was taking place. the police did find shell

casings from a handgun but it's unclear if anybody was hit. they obtained surveillance video. for several hours, sjpd blocked surrounding intersections and entrances to freeways as police officers went store by store to release employees and shoppers who were hiding. >> i had to quickly round up everybody -- we can't barricade in our store, and i quickly got the keys and opened the backdoor and just evacuated. >> we know there was a shooting and we are still looking for a victim and still looking for a suspect. >> oak ridge was the scene of another crime over the weekend. a retail organized crime crew robbed the macy's there saturday night. investigators say other suspects returned and beat up one of the security guards. a woman who was shopping at the mall tried to intervene with officers as they handcuffed a

suspect. she's a mother and thought the officers were being too rough with the suspects and she ended up in a scuffle with police and the robbery suspect got away as officers arrested that woman. >> bob, thank you. not far from the oakridge mall, workers at the hawaiian barbecue arrived yesterday morning to find thieves had broken in sometime overnight damaging the interior and stealing both cashboxes, but both were empty. and then the deliberations, the first full day yesterday following the criminal trial that lasted more than three months of elizabeth holmes. if you are wondering how soon the verdict may be reached, legal experts say there's a lot of information to review. >> i'm sure they are

combined all in 2020. oakland may be ready to approve new rules for places like restaurants and gyms. today in the bay's cierra johnson is live this morning. cierra, a lot going on for people in the east bay today. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. it's a busy day, indeed. let's start with the looming deadline for those first responders as well as those paramedics. today is the day they have to show that proof of vaccination in order to continue to work, and there's options. they need to show they have received both shots or the johnson & johnson, and a booster shot is not required. for those refusing to boost will have to wear masks around patients inside and outside. in oakland, they are proposing an emergency ordinance for people at indoor public

gathering places have to show proof of vaccinations. now this would impact everything from concert venues to museums, gyms, senior centers and libraries, and that meeting is slated to begin at 9:30 this morning. this morning we will keep a close eye on not only how many first responders and paramedics are responding to the request for vaccination, but where the meeting stands where the members of the oakland city council are looking at the masking for indoor places. >> a lot of people still on the fence to get the vaccination or even the booster shot. i guess we will be waiting, whopping and seeing. thanks, cierra. the omicron variant showing up in contra costa county. the first three cases confirmed.

agenda after a key democratic senator said he would vote no on a pivotal climate change and social safety net bill. the senator is now taking heat from the white house and progressives but he defended his decision in a west virginia radio interview. >> it's not the president, it's the staff. they put things out that are absolutely inexcusable and they know what it is, and that's it. >> chuck schumer said he will still hold a vote on the build back better bill next month. london breed getting mixed reaction on a state of emergency for the tenderloin. she made the declaration that

included adding police presence and cracking down on drug use. >> we cannot simply arrest and prosecute our way out of the problems affecting so many parts of our city. >> the d.a. says the tenderloin needs more social services. supervisors will consider london breed's declaration this thursday. dublin leaders are expected to approve a new development with 573 homes along croak road near jordan ranch park that the proposal also includes the creation of 72 affordable homes. there's still no timeline for completion. actually we have about one hour left of fall and so now we're looking at the shortest day of the year. so what is happening here. basically the earth tilted away from the sun and it's shining directly over the tropic of capricorn, and so sunrise will happen at 7:16, and sunset at 4:45, and the length of day 9:38. so we will see days getting longer after this day, and we are getting ready for a good dose of rain with several systems interacting together to bring us a lot of rain. this first round coming in, and it starts out, here we are, 1:30 in the afternoon in santa rosa moving across the north bay and spreading into the east bay in time for the evening commute. widespread light rain in the overnight hours. there will be pockets of heavier rain but look how it continues

off and on wednesday, thursday, friday and christmas day, too. over the next several days we could see over two inches for some spots and three inches for parts of the north bay. for the santa cruz mountains, possibly five to six inches of rain and that's over the course of a week. in the sierra, we could see snowfall totals above 7,000 feet. the gusty winds will be at about 45 miles per hour. there will be some breaks in the rain, but it looks wet so we will have a chance of passing showers over the next several days. our temperatures reach into the low 50s. for san francisco, we're looking at more mid-50s there as well. just keep the umbrella close by. what is the update on the morning commute? >> it started out rough for the east bay, and it's still trying to recover from a number of accidents, both on the

there has been an earthquake that was reported, a 3.3 that hit ferndale at 6:14 this morning, and this followed a 6.2 earthquake yesterday late morning. there were a lot of shoppers in the store when that quake struck. a lot of items knocked to the ground, despite a few broken glasses and windows there were no reports of any injuries. president biden unveiling a new response to tackle the latest covid surge. the white house says the president will address expanding access to testing amid recent long lines and high demand for at-home testing kits. he plans to deliver 500 million at-home test kits to those that order it on the website.

we are going to bring you his address live here on nbc bay area. san francisco reeling from the loss of walgreens stores is now about to lose several cvs pharmacies. this is part of a national downsizing? >> reporter: that's right. come the new year there will be a handful of cvs stores in the city that will be closing the doors, one of which will include this location here on van ness. it's a plan to reduce the size of the company with the change in shopping pattern. january 7th, the market street location will close, and 351 california street, 500 pine and 400 sutter. 10% of the company stores are

closing. walgreens closed stores and that was related to retail theft, and cvs maintains they are closing because of the change in shopping patterns. this is part of a plan to close 300 stores each year. if you have a prescription at one of the stores closing, your prescription will be moved to another location. and the good news is that employees working at those stores are being offered jobs at other locations. >> thank you. jurors later today will deliberate the fate of elizabeth holmes. yesterday was the first full day of deliberations following the criminal trial that lasted more than three months. this is tied to the downfall of theranos that cost investors millions. if convicted she could be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
