right now at 4:30, a soggy start to your christmas eve. the rain coming down hard in parts of the bay area. meteorologist, kari hall, is timing out whether your outdoor holiday plans could be washed out. and then firefighters pulled a car out of water with a body inside. lots of questions linger. who came to the rescue to make sure a grinch did not ruin their holiday display? this is "today in the bay."

heaviest rain coming down now, and if you can hold off on driving maybe wait another hour or so because we will see this taper off. take a being look at the bright yellows we have, and all that pushing through and will begin to taper off soon. we have a lot of moisture coming in as that cold front is passing through the bay area. our temperatures will be dropping. once again, we will see a trend of drier conditions later this morning into the first part of the afternoon. if you are planning to head out to some of the events today, maybe christmas in the park or go through the drive-through events, and it will be drier before heavy rain moves in tomorrow. we will track this with the timeline. vianey, how is it looking for the very soggy commute?

>> yeah, it is, and ponding can cause spinouts. chp reporting a couple overnight spinouts. notice how there are three different accidents. it looks like the slow lane is being blocked, and i am seeing reports of some near the auto park exit. one being reported as a solo spinout. we have not seen the metering lights turned on in the last couple of games, and i hoping it will stay this clear for the morning commute. stormranger giving us the latest information for the next coming days. you can have access to stormranger, and download our

app and it will give us up-to-date details of where that rain is and when it's coming to your neighborhood. officials tell us they got a call before midnight of a car in the water. took them nearly three hours to pull it out. it's possible the driver got confused in the rain and fog and ended up in the water. the victim has not been identified. now to an update, northbound lanes back open along 680 in danville. 10:00 last night, it all happened between sycamore valley road and diablo road. it's not clear why police shutdown the lanes. as we learn more from chp, we'll pass it along. airports across the bay area busy, and it's looking like years before the pandemic. travel is not the only thing surging, so is the omicron

mean, it's just pouring down there. over towards gilroy and watsonville, it's bright red indicating intense rain falling right now. the wider view, it's dumping down snow in the sierra. we will continue to see the treacherous driving conditions for a while longer as the system moves through. looking at the wide view of what is happening here, the atmospheric river shifted over towards california. san diego is dealing with the heavy widespread rain. we are getting the cold front that has been slow to make its way into the bay area but giving us extra rain. if you are going out to the illuminated holiday this evening, there will be drier conditions this evening but the later we go into the night, it's more of a chance we will see rain coming back. a little bit more off for this

afternoon into the evening, and then we still will have a chance of spotty showers here and there. be prepared we could see quickly changing weather. then we will start to see waves of heavier rain moving into tomorrow afternoon. it will be a soggy christmas. we are looking at snow capping spots as well as our north bay coastal ranges that will see snow moving in over the next several days now that the cold air is here. we have the morning rain tapering off, what we are seeing right now, a chance of spotty showers this afternoon, but times of sunshine as well. widespread rain throughout the day on christmas, and very heavy sierra snow picking up again for tomorrow. looking at our 7-day forecast, it's busy here. we want to make sure you are checking in because we will see the waves of rain. next week it will be super cold.

we could see some snow on more of our hills across the bay area. we'll keep an eye on that. we have seen a couple issues coming up. we have we have two crashes near moore park exit, this is along the southbound and northbound lanes so keep that in mind because i am starting to see a delay through the 280/87 interchange. right here you can see slowing. sometimes you may not even see the ponding water because it's dark out there. i want to give you a quick check of the south bay drive times. slowing from 101 to highway 85, about 19 minutes. >> thank you. it's 4:42 right now.

a young teenager dead after being hit by a stray bullet in after officer-involved shooting in southern california at a burlington coat factory in north holiday. police found a man attacking another person with a chain in a crowded store. officers opened fire killing the suspect. a 14-year-old girl was struck by a police bullet, and passed through a dressing room and it killed her. the lapd chief vowing to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation. japan announcing it will not send a delegation to the olympics in beijing, and this comes as the u.s. is holding a diplomatic boycott over the games. the olympics begin february 3rd with the opening ceremony. you can watch the olympics only
