give you a look at traffic. >> yeah, right now there's a new crash being reported along eastbound 580 near exit 24. not seeing slowing on the speed sensors but it was just reported a few minutes ago, so keep that in mind. i am still seeing areas clearing out from earlier crashes, and now we are seeing crashes along southbound 280, that along winchester exit. a lot of ponding water out on the freeways. back to you. >> thank you, vianey. 5:03. now to a follow-up on how dangerous the storms could be. fplt two people drowned.

two cars that were stuck in the flooded underpass, emergency crews were able to save one man who was standing on the roof of his car, but they could not save two others in the other cars. neighbors say they had to tell family members about that tragedy. >> their family came up from los angeles to spend christmas and new year's with them, and they have been trying to get a hold of them all day and no answer. >> so hard. one neighbor says they are concerned because the underpass is one of the only ways to get into that neighborhood. if it floods again, first responders wouldn't be able to get there if there was an emergency. a great way to keep track of what is going on with the storm, download the nbc bay area app. you can use our live radar to track and find out where that

rain is headed to next and when it with will get to your neighborhood. the board of supervisors voted earlier on a proposal by the mayor that addresses the drug problem in that neighborhood. >> the vote and proposal are not without controversy. damian trujillo joins us for that. >> more services aimed at overdoses and mental health care concerns. supervisors say the moon was needed because there have been 1,700 overdose deaths in that community in the last year alone. that site is designed to help people get off drugs and provides mental health services. the mayor herself was not at the meeting where two voted no to

protest what they see as a plan for more policing. the police said his department will not use the emergency declaration as an arrest tactic to clear the streets. one supervisor said the declaration is long overdue. >> tragically each month that has gone by without this, things have gotten worst and more people are continuing to die. everybody that lives in the tenderloin knows there's been a emergency for a long time now. >> one citizen said the public health order is a trojan horse designed to flood the tenderloin with the police. in the end the mayor insisted that sitting back and doing nothing was not an option. the declaration can be revoked

by the board of supervisors at anytime or be extended. still no verdict in the elizabeth holmes fraud trial. yesterday the jury asked the judge for recordings of holmes talking to possible investors. they came back to hear the 2013 interview with the jury. a potential theranos ito, and the company's relationship with the military and pharmaceutical companies, all claims that were not true. >> i'm going to be surprised if the jury holds elizabeth holmes

different. de blasio limiting the crowds to 15,000 people. people will have to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask. you will not be allowed to leave or go inside any businesses until that event is over. meantime closer to home in southern california, the rose bowl getting the green light on new year's day. the parade and games will go on as scheduled in pasadena. last year the rose parade was canceled, of course, because of the pandemic. this year's event theme is see, believe, achieve. it would be nice if it's not raining there in pasadena for that parade. we will just see, because it's certainly coming down in the bay area. taking a live look outside at christmas in the park and

downtown san josé this morning, that will put you in the christmas mood, already on this christmas eve. kari, are you ready? >> yes. i think so. as ready as i am going to get. it has been nice to see this rain that has been coming through as we get a look right now at all of this rain that has been off and on for the past several days. it has been raining basically since tuesday. as the days go on, we may see more problems with flooding as well as mudslides. another look at christmas in the park. if you plan to go there this afternoon and later into the evening, looks like we will see a break. if you are thinking this morning of traveling, you might want to wait until 9:00 or there after as we are looking at a mix of sun and clouds. we will see much less rain going into late this morning and afternoon. we could see spotty showers

ceremony. her co workers heard that and said it would not do and surprised her that day with her own graduation procession, not across the stage but a parking lot. >> that they recognized my hardship and they wanted to acknowledge that and they were proud of me and just beyond words, really beyond words. >> if that were not touching enough, there was the story in august from kaiser permanente san mateo medical offices and a stuffed bunny left behind in an elevator, and robert douglas not only created flyers for the bunny but tracked down every young patient who came that day and called their family. robert finally found 2-year-old nathan, who, his parents said, had been missing his bun bun.

martin, and coming over the santa cruz mountains. we picked up two inches of rain in that area since this storm began. we have seen rainfall totals as high as five inches for some of the spots that typically get more rain like the north bay mountains. we are seeing all of this coming together and pushing off towards the east and a break of some of that rain to the north here. i can see the wider view now that the atmospheric river has moved over to southern california. they will continue to see the rain continuing there. we are looking at a break as we go late morning into the early afternoon. if you still have shopping to do or you head out and about today, even just going to work, we will still see afternoon rain starting to pop-up here and there. we are going to continue to see a chance of showers moving through. as we go into tomorrow morning, i do think for christmas morning, it's going to be widespread with the rain and then snow on mount hamilton,

possibly the santa cruz summit and further to the north we could see some snow on some of our north bay mountains. we will have times of sunshine and widespread rain returns on christmas morning and throughout the day. it's nice so see the snowpack going up. we are right now back to what it should be for this time of year, looking at 100% of normal for the northern sierra. 102 for the statewide average. it's nice to see that coming up with more snow in the forecast. every time we run this, i mean, the numbers are just off the charts here, possibly 92 inches of snow over the next week. we could see some snow on our bay area hills next wednesday, and we will watch that as the temperatures drop. vianey, you are watching that and also the morning commute? >> yeah, i have you covered

sunnyvale, especially in the los altos area. very heavy rain over milpitas right now, and we will see that continue over the next couple of hours. we are looking at still some very active conditions out here, very sloppy and also some standing water on the roadways. that's going to cause problems as we start to see more of the rain coming through. look at the trend for the rest of the day. for fremont, we are seeing sunshine at 8:00, and it will have a chance to soak in as we get a break from the rain today. vianey, you have been tracking the commute. any major issues? >> yeah, we have a sig-alert that has just been issued for a crash near 680 southbound near the auto mall exit. it appears this was a crash involving two vehicles and one is a big rig now on its side. because of the time that it's going to take to clear that out

they have issued a sig-alert hard closure. your best bet is to avoid this stretch altogether. maybe take the fremont involved and mission boulevard service street. we don't know yet if there are injuries involved. we hope everybody is okay, but this is southbound 680 at the auto mall exit. i'll send it back to you. >> yeah, it's part of all the rain we are getting here. you can have access to the stormranger, the exclusive mobile doppler radar, just download our nbc bay area app and you can see where the rain is and when it will be headed to your neighborhood. a car ended up in the martinez marina. officials got a call just before midnight of a car in the water. it took them nearly three hours

to pull it out. police say the road ends at the boat launch and it's possible the driver got confused in the rain and fog and ended up in the water. the victim has not been identified. now to an update, lanes back open on 880 in danville. officers swarmed the freeway between sycamore valley road and diablo road. still not clear why police shutdown the lanes. when we learn more from chp, we will pass it along. people trying to get home or waiting for loved ones to arrive, some airlines are canceling flights because of omicron. >> today in the bay's cierra johnson is live at sfo where she's monitoring the situation. this could be problematic throughout the day. >> reporter: yeah, it could be

problematic and pose a domino affect for folks looking to take a flight, and the omicron variant is impacting travel with a lot of the staff workers being exposed to the omicron variant, thus leading them to cancel flights. several airlines are canceling hundreds of flights. united airlines cut 112 flights across the country, and omicron has impacted its staff. alaska airlines canceled 17 flights yesterday after somebody reported possible being supposer to covid. additional cancelations were possible for today. a spokesperson said no cancelations were planned.

aaa estimates 109 million people will travel 50 miles or more between the 23rd and january 2nd. this year's number comes to about 92% of 2019 levels. airlines will see a 184% increase from last year. just to put it in perspective for those individual airports, here at sfo, traffic is currently at 60 to 65% at prepandemic levels, and oakland airport expected to reach 90% of 2019 passenger levels for the same period. >> we were 100% prepared for this. we saw the demand coming. we are expecting 630,000 people through san francisco during the two-week holiday period. we were really gearing up for

it. >> reporter: if you do have plans to travel or are expecting somebody traveling, you should keep a close eye on the flight schedules. in this situation, it seems pretty fluid. make sure your flight is, in fact, taking off. cierra johnson here for "today in the bay." >> thank you, cierra. a follow-up on a south bay synagogue that went up in flames after hanukkah. this could be arson. this is near branyan and the expressway. the flames destroyed the entire downstairs. surveillance shows somebody lurking around the building before the fire started. nobody was hurt and the scrolls were saved. a south bay family say their faith has been restored in

humanity after a nativity scene was stolen from their front porch. that man you see right there walked up and started grabbing other figurines and took off. he came back an hour later and stole the rest of it. that family said it was sad for them because an heirloom was passed down to them through generations. >> somebody would have the courage to walk up and take a nativity. who takes that? >> how could somebody do that? the family posted the video to next door, and hours later a stranger, a neighbor brought them a brand-new nativity scene and said they wanted to help out. it's 5:38. take a look at your screen right there. it's going to be a white christmas in the sierra. this is a live look at i-80 and soda springs near castle peak. nearly whiteout conditions there. this is near donner pass yesterday. if you are headed up to the

sierra, make sure you are prepared. the chains are required on i-80 and highway 50. they are talking about closing the highways because of the whiteout conditions there. the windows are very small, so you have to make sure you keep monitoring the forecast. i do think you may have a chance by this afternoon, but right now do not try to go. it's definitely very dangerous. we are seeing another wave of this rain passing by. we are also looking at widespread rain across the region. here in the bay area we are seeing the downpours now, but it's going to be very soggy across southern california, san diego, as we go into today if you are traveling into southern california. if you are about to get on a flight, the airport delays are at zero right now, and everything looks on-time, even across the region.

i don't see any major travel delays due to weather. later this evening, if you want to drive through the illuminated holiday through cunningham park. that will be nice and dry through 7:00. there's a chance the rain could be returning and also looking at showers into the day tomorrow. if you want to kick on kwanzaa on sunday, at golden gate park there will be a poetry celebration. there could be on and off showers for sunday. in tahoe, allow extra time to get there. we have a couple fender-benders down through the southbound. we have a big issue. this is a sig-alert. northbound 680 at the auto mall exit. it's completely closed off. all lines, a hard closure.
