stormranger out there. >> vianey, the rain is much needed. >> yeah, it's beneficial in many ways. i know we still have a long way to go before we get out of the drought, but it has taken categories from exceptional to extreme, and any boost is good news for us. still plenty of snow coming down. we will keep the rain for the first half of our day. we are getting a little break at times, but so far right now widespread throughout the entire bay area. no matter where you are commuting, whether it's 101 in san mateo, or san francisco through hayward, and down through the santa cruz mountains. current temperatures in the 40s, 46 degrees in san josé. 44 in dublin. 42 in santa rosa. we want to give you a look on what to expect, we do have a colder air system coming in and that will bring us low snow levels near to below 2,000 feet.

our highs will only be in the upper 30s and 40s. i also have a look at some records that we broke into the weekend because of all this rain and sierra snow that you need to talk about, especially if you live in san francisco, you probably already heard this. there's a possibility san francisco could hit a record low tonight of 40 degrees. that's what we are monitoring as we head into the overnight hours. mike has breaking news to tell us about. this is on the rails, vianey. we typically expect to see bart with a ten-minute delay system wide because the brakes, they want to make sure they work on the slippery rails. this is very important. we have no service. the transition over to sfo on the bart lines, there's no power at the millbrae station for bart, and that's effecting that. bart is completely on a separate

grid, and that's affecting pg&e's reports in the area, but we will track that, too. the traffic volume is right around the bay, so we are okay as far as the speed sensors, including the bay bridge toll plaza and anywhere else you would expect to see that, and there was slowing on 84 coming out of livermore and pleasanton. stormranger is a mobile doppler radar, and you can track the rain heading to your neighborhood by downloading the nbc bay area app. and then the omicron variant is leaving some holiday travelers completely stranded. >> today in the bay's liz mclaughlin has more on that

impact of the surge. >> this highly contagious omicron variant now accounts for more than 70% of new coronavirus cases in the u.s. the daily case count, the highest we have seen in about a year. this is really putting stress on an already short-staffed industry, the travel industry. we have seen more than 6,000 flights canceled over the busy holiday weekend, and tens of thousands of flights delayed and according to flight aware today there's already nearly 800 u.s. flights canceled. the holiday travel nightmare continues for airline passengers this week, feeling the impact on omicron's rapid spread. >> they said the reason why the flights were canceled was a crew availability due to covid. >> cruise ships were turned away over the weekend. >> the coronavirus surge is sidelining athletes with three more college football bowl games

canceled on sunday. at schools across the country, they prepare for students to return the number of children being infected on hospitalized is rising. educators now strategizing on how to keep kids in the classroom safely. >> our message to the families are, number one, we will do everything we can to keep schools open. >> testing may be a key factor in controlling the spread and preventing disruption, but demand outpaced supply in recent days, with the test kits sold out. >> we have obviously got to do better. i think things will improve greatly as we get into january, but that doesn't help us today and tomorrow. >> a race to control the spread in the final days of 2021. >> president biden promised to provide americans with 500 million free at-home covid tests.

officials here say contracts to purchase those tests could be finalized this week, but the website where americans could order one won't be up until january. once available it's unclear how many each person can order and how long the shipping will take. marcus? >> i am surprised they don't have the test sooner than just now. but let's talk about the regulators. are they planning to do anything to help travel disruptions? >> this travel disruption is expected to continue. it's not like a technical difficult that can be quickly fixed and we are expected to seat numbers rise. some lawmakers are calling for stricter protocols for domestic travelers, including a vaccine mandate. dr. anthony fauci signaled yesterday he would be in favor of a vaccine mandate for domestic travelers, and dianne feinstein pushing for a negative covid test or proof of

vaccination. so far international travelers have to prove that negative covid test. >> liz, thank you for that. this morning as mentioned, the demand for covid-19 test remains high especially here in the bay area, but supply remains low. in response the county is now rolling out free testing sites in several cities, but leaders admit there are not enough to go around. >> there are not many pharmacies now where you can go and get self tested. that's problematic. that's extremely problematic. as a county we will have to lean in and we may have to do much, much more than we are doing now. >> the county has several testing sites open this week. leaders warn, though, the wet weather could shut them down. appointments are strongly encouraged. covid cases in los angeles

county are on the rise. here's a live look at l.a. this morning. the average daily right for people testing positive for the virus is up 15%. the county reported 9,000 new cases and seven deaths last week alone. a vaccine mandate deadline is fast approaching for san joée city workers. the city set december 31st as its deadline and that's this friday. if workers are not vaccinated they could face disciplinary action, including being fired. time is running out for the rest of the city employees, and that includes first responders. a live look in san francisco now where all city contractors must be fully vaccinated by december 31st as well, or risk losing their jobs. contractors are being defined as anybody working along city

the storm has caused the resort to delay the reopening. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. it's wet out there as we head into the final week of 2021. we needed this rain, but, boy, when are we going to get a break from the rain. let's check in with meteorologist kari -- oh, vianey arana who is in for kari hall. so sorry. i don't even work kari on a regular basis, i work with vianey every weekend. >> yeah, you were asking if it was a weekend or weekday btv. san francisco yesterday hit new. every since october 1st, the amount of rain we have seen in san francisco. look at that, 15 inches. it makes the eighth wettest year

to date. 1989, 1845, 1866 and 1852. fantastic to see all this rain. i know that mike has a couple issues out on the roads that he needs to tell us about. >> vianey, i don't know if it's weather-related, but it will affect you if you are headed to sfo. the millbrae bart station is closed, and we are hearing about the delays not only on the peninsula because of the outages between mill ray and sfo, but it's affecting routes to and from the south bay. traffic flow is light and the commute is light, but looking at sfo, that's a major concern there. tough conditions, lots of ponding and puddling and spinouts reported around the

coming up in a couple minutes. traffic is flowing smoothly, but the conditions are rough. we're talking about power problems and a station outage for bart. more details, coming up. wall street set to open mixed this morning as traders return from the holiday weekend. the markets are coming up with their third straight gain. >> speaking of the economy, retail sales rose 8.5% this holiday season according to a report by master card spending polls. that's the fastest pace in 17 years, even as shoppers deal with the shortages and omicron variant. the results were fueled by purchases of clothing and

peaks. the peak is at 4,265 feet, but we saw some low snow levels at about 4,000 and even 3,000 into sunday for parts of mount diablo as well. we will continue to see that, especially in the sierra. it's raining out there, really coming down in parts of the north bay right now. mill valley, san francisco as well. we will keep this around not just for the first half of our day, but push into the second half of the afternoon. we will get heavier pockets pushing through santa cruz. sunday in san francisco we saw record rain in san francisco. since october 1st, you know, the big storm that we got in october leading up to now, we have seen 15 inches of rain in san francisco, making it the eighth wettest year to date, the wettest since 1983, which back

then was a little over 15 1/2 inches. you guys know we needed a lot of this rain. let's continue to look at the hour-by-hour outlook. around noon, notice we get pockets of rain. a little break for the tri-valley/concord area. the north bay gets a break at around 2:00, 3:00, and then we get a switch on the radar model runs which symbolize a wintry mix in the bay area. this will bring us a chance for snow and sleet especially head into the early-morning commute. also into tuesday night, frosty conditions out there. i pushed this timeline forward to about 1:00 a.m., so can you get an idea of when the temperatures dip down. then looking ahead, daytime highs for tomorrow are going to

be in the 40s. i have had to turn on my heater every once in a while because of this, and this is what we are going to be monitoring into tuesday, wednesday and thursday. a quick check into wednesday and thursday, and i just want to show you, we are showing great potential for some of the local hilltop areas. there's a picture in san josé, with a little snow at the peaks yesterday morning, so sierra snow also expecting several more inches into wednesday. that's on top of the record snowfall they have already seen. our snowpack is above 140 percent. here's a look at your 7-day forecast. new year's eve, they are concerned the rain will linger. the rain moves out as of thursday, and we will get a couple showers to the north. it will be dry for friday but cold. let's see how the roads are doing and get a check of traffic with mike. conditions are tough, but let's talk about the rails.

because of covid-19. she held on to her tickets for two years, and then when the concert finally happened, she went but the venue would not let her in and refused entry. caroline went home and complained to ticketmaster and requested a refund and they said no that she had transferred her seats to somebody else, and she said that never happened. so she asked for her help. so if your event is rescheduled, your ticket should be valid. so contacted ticketmaster and within a week a refund. we asked ticketmaster what happened but did not hear back. state law says california residents get their money back when an event is canceled, postponed or rescheduled, section 22507 says the price should be fully refunded upon request. if you are hitting a ticket

storm ranger is capturing. it's widespread, even down through san josé we are seeing heavier pockets along 880. the morning commute is gusty. temperatures in the 40s right now, 46 degrees in san josé. 44 in dublin. 45 in oakland. yes, it is going to be cold but it's going to get even colder within the next couple of days. here's a closer look at some of your headlines. what i will be going into further detail in my report about is the snow levels. this is a big talker. the coldest days on tuesday and thursday, we're only reaching into the 30s and 40s. we need to get to the breaking news with mike. yeah, the roadways are wet and tough of conditions as you

neighborhood. after the holiday, week two of jury deliberations continue. kris? >> reporter: before the break the jury sent a question to the judge asking if they could deliberatef they could take their notes home. the judge made it clear they could only deliberate altogether here at the courthouse so that's where they are going to pick up, which is where they left off on thursday. on thursday they were focused on a conversation that elizabeth holmes had with investors by phone. at the time theranos was still a private company but worth about $7 billion. in that call holmes talks about plans to put her pwhrus testing technology into retail stores and building on the company's relationships with the military and pharmaceuticals, and while the government's case said that much of what she said was fraudulent, our legal analysts said what holmes put on the line

happens in silicon valley, a lot. >> i will be surprised if the jury holds elizabeth holmes to that standard. if they do, startup founders across the nation and silicon valley should be quaking in their boots a little bit. >> as you know by now, this case has not been going five days a week, and we checked the court calendar and it was updated at 3:30 this morning. as of today, today seems like it could be the only day the jurors will be deliberating as the judge is off the schedule but still available. >> certainly we will be following this but have been keeping an eye on this case throughout its time. as soon as the verdict comes down, we will bring it to you live and legal analysis. developing this morning in the east bay, part of highway 4 in bay point is back open after a shooting.

it happened just after 7:30 last night, this is west of bailey road here bay point. a man was found with a gunshot wound and he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. investigators are still trying to figure out if a gunfire came from another car. no motive has been released. no arrests have been made. also in bay point two other police officers are on the mend. it all started when the driver led officers on a short chase and stopped and that's when two chp officers got out of their patrol car, and they say the driver accelerating into them causing miner injuries. the driver is still on the run had morning. that car was found a short distance away, and abandoned. it has been a nightmare travel weekend for thousands of people after airlines canceled hundreds of flights nationwide. so far today over 800 flights

have been canceled. they are blaming it not just on the weather but on covid cases among flight crews. just today so far delta has canceled 64 flights, and jetblue 66 and united 80. >> hopefully we will get back. i gave myself a couple days cushion, so we'll be all right. >> in total, more than 1500 domestic flights were canceled this past weekend. back here locally, a 70-mile stretch of interstate 80 in the sierra remains closed after a powerful storm dumped nearly two feet of snow in the area. i was telling you i have friends stuck in tahoe. >> it's crazy how much snow we have been getting. 80, closed and highway 50 closed this morning. the snow is good for ski resorts, but it has been hard

for the tourists to get to the fresh snow. >> the biggest days of the year are christmas day, the day after christmas and new year's day, so with the road closed, you know, we're happy there is snow but then again there's no business. >> travelers are being urged to avoid that area. a live look for you this morning at highway 80 at donner summit, just covered in fresh snow. road conditions have not changed much this morning. the highway is shutdown for people hoping to get into tahoe, as i was showing marcus pictures, my friends are trapped inside and the snow is up to the second story of their house. we will get to mike with traffic, but, first, vianey, any hope to the horizon? >> not for the next three days. there's a winter storm warning until 1:00 a.m. on tuesday, and

there's avalanche warnings near that area, and so it's too dangerous altogether. tuesday and wednesday, temperatures remain cold enough to continue to see the snow falling. even this is dangerous and making an impact in other ways, it's great for the sierra snowpack. right now we are at 146% of statewide averages. this is for bart riders. folks heading to sfo, perhaps we are looking at no ability to get on bart, and the millbrae station is closed because of the power outages. it ripples out through the east bay as well, and the system is tied together except for two lines along the peninsula. there's two lanes for major delays system wide. we are looking at sam trans, and their team is providing buses in the area. that's for mass transit. on the roadways, it's just conditions -- i should not say

afternoon, and temperatures topping out in the 50s and cooling off quickly. here's the reason why. we get a cold air blast. if you look at radar to decipher a little bit, the green is rain and the white, snow, and the pink/blue, a wintry mix. we have seen snow on top of the local bay area peaks, and it could drop down to 1,800 feet, and we could see snow in the santa cruz mountains. and in the tahoe area, we have a couple days left of seeing snow. 21 inches on top of what has already fallen. why not give you a sneak peek even though it's monday at your new year's forecast. the first few days of the forecast will be rainy, and then it clears out for the north bay, but by friday, saturday and sunday our temperatures will be in the 50s with cold nights,

of jury deliberations continues in the elizabeth holmes fraud trial today. >> kris sanchez joins us with where the case stands now. kris? >> reporter: usually we expect elizabeth holmes will walk through here and into the courtroom, but because the jury is deliberating the only reason she would show up today is if the jury had a question or if they came to a verdict. here's where they left off the last time they were together, and that was thursday. the jury was focused on a call with elizabeth holmes, and at that time theranos was a private company. she talked about putting her blood testing technology into retail stores and building on the company's relationships with the military and pharmaceuticals, and while the government's case said much of what she said was fraudulent, legal analysts said what holmes said on that line was a lot of what happens in silicon valley. >> i'm going to be surprised if the jury holds elizabeth holmes
