17 as the bitter temperatures move in. and mike inouye is tracking the road conditions. first, let's check in with vianey arana with weather. >> temperatures are cold, in the 30s. we still have cloud cover and that's helping keep some of the temperatures warmer because of it. once those clouds clear, then the rain moves in and that's when we could see the drop in the temperatures and snow dropping nearby. we are not in the clear just yet. if you are going to be traveling to southern california, the grapevine, please check your road conditions first. that stretch through fraser park could get really dangerous. right now we have got a couple light showers pushing through, up through oakland as well. here's a closer look at what we are monitoring. your chance of snow for the north and east valleys, it could be a dusting or light

accumulations, 2,500 to 3,000 feet. some of the highest peaks could see two to six inches possible, and highest i mean above the 4,000 feet mark. this is going to be fantastic to see. when we start seeing snow in some of the lower elevations, things really shape up out there when it comes to the colder temperatures. i will have a closer look at how your new year's forecast is looking and the rest of your seven day, but first let's get to mike with traffic. yeah, here's an incident at the willow road overpass and here's the activity. a deadly crash happened here just after 4:00 this morning. traffic is forced off the freeway at marsh. we have a couple surface street

options. you take 280 which is clear toward the south bay. i will talk you through the closures, and there's a potential for some of your smaller roads and bridges as things get even colder. we'll track that as well here. back to you. the deep chill is setting in over the bay area, and we could see a dusting of snow. >> yeah, here in the bay area, today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us from the summit on highway 17. how is it looking out there? you are so cute in your hat. >> reporter: it's a beanie made for the wind, and it's really cold out here. the nice thing is that we are dry so far, and we know as vianey said, we could see moisture falling in the snow. this was back in february, 2019, where we saw snow here at the summit and across other parts of

the bay area as well. it is always very fun when that happens, but we know it can be dangerous. we could see another dusting of snow now between this hour and the midday hour. it could be dangerous, though. we know santa cruz county board of supervisors are meeting. bay area wide the story really has benning the extreme cold from the last couple of nights. we did see a lot of folks out and about. some communities are adding beds to the warming centers to make sure people have a place to go, but we found people getting out and feeling festive despite the chill. >> we brought in a couple extra pallets. we have gone through a whole

palate and there's 400 on a palate. >> i am ready to go. >> reporter: hope you got a warm jacket for christmas as well, because you will definitely need it. we will stay up here on the summit on the 17 waiting for the dusting of snow. as it happens, we will bring it to you. we have to tell you all the time, drive slower than the speed limit if the conditions allow. black ice is very hard to see, especially in the dark. you have heard it before, but as a mom i have to tell you again. back to you. >> you're the best, kris. thanks. great information there. you can track the concern the temperatures right from your phone by downloading our nbc bay area app. omicron is shattering records and more children getting ill. as of last week the state is

reporting an average -- this is nearly 12,000 new cases. this is per day. that's a 73% jump from two weeks ago. that surge coming with covid testing crisis. today in the bay's liz mclaughlin is joining us from washington with more. liz? >> good morning, marcus. staffing shortages caused by the virus continue to impact industries from travel to health care to retail, but new recommendations from the cdc could help to offset that disruption. now officials say anyone who is fully vaccinated and boosted can forego isolation after exposed to the virus and those that tested positive can quarantine for a shorter period of time. new guidance for those infected with covid-19. the cdc cutting the recommended isolation time in half, from ten days to five as long as they are

asymptomatic. the change comes as new positive cases soar to record levels in the u.s. experts worn the surge combined with the tens of millions of americans that remain unvaccinated could create a strain on the nation's health care system. >> we having to hold patients that are supposed to go to the icu and the emergency department for hours and sometimes days. >> especially concerning, the spike in the number of kids getting sick and ending up in the hospital. >> 0% of them are fully vaccinated children. they are not seeing any cases of the vaccinated children in the hospital now. >> the biden administration facing criticism over the testing shortages. the president acknowledging more needs to be done in a meeting with governors on monday.

>> look, there's no federal solution. this gets solved state level. >> now looking to local leaders to help solve the surge. some state officials are ramping up regulations. in new york this week a first in the nation, a vaccine for the private sector goes into effect, and that means nearly 185,000 businesses will be required to show proof of vaccine for their employees. marcus, back to you. >> we are starting to see that more and more. liz, thank you. was just heard in liz's story, testing sites are seeing a record number of people lined up to get testing. in the east bay, there was lines stretching through the parking lot and around the block. several test providers say they are trying to add staff to meet the need. in the meantime you may have to do digging to find an

appointment or be willing to wait. >> can't guarantee it, because we give preference to the people with appointments, but we do everything possible. >> most counties' covid web pages try to find an appointment near you, and if that doesn't help, check with your doctor or local pharmacy. appointments are required here at the cuberly community center. that's happening from 5:00 until 7:00 tonight at the rengstaff barbecue area. the freeze order comes as the county continues to see a rise in covid infection rates.

this includes seven recent positive cases among court staff. that freeze order will be re-evaluated on the 14th of january. at 5:09, we will look at the live commute in oakland. looks like it's moving quite nicely. it's cold out there, though. frigid temperatures. let's check in with meteorologist, vianey arana, for what we can expect on this tuesday. >> yeah, i have a good look at your hour-by-hour outlook. we are not clear of the shower activity. let's talk about the hour-by-hour outlook. tuesday, 7:30, look what is happening in the bay area. we see clearlake, ukiah. mount diablo is on deck to get a ton of snow. you see the white and pink mix on radar, and once the clouds clear out it will be cold and pwraebgz of sunshine at times. there's a possibility that once snow showers move in, this is

going to continue all day, on and off today, and then we get a couple showers on wednesday morning. by wednesday night, 11:00, look at this. we still keep the cloud cover on the map but the rain starts to move out of the bay area. this is going to be just in time for, it looks like, new year's eve, which i had a lot of viewers asking about their concern. can i go and see the san francisco fireworks. i am definitely going to take you through the timing of that, especially those that head to san francisco. first, let's get a look at the roads with mike. vianey, we continue to follow the deadly crash and the closure for highway 101 on the peninsula. you see the slowing as you approach marsh road. that's where folks are forced off the freeway by chp. you want to continue south to palo alto and beyond. go off to middle field, or if

let's check in with silvanna. wall street is set to open higher after stocks reassessed the impact of the omicron variant. the s&p 500 gained 1.4% to close at a record high for the 69th time this year. it's the strongest start for the s&p to the so-called santa claus rally period since 2000. it comprises the last five trading days of the year and the first two sessions of next. historically it has been positive, stocks have been positive through the stretch 75% of the time. and then raising prices on condiment items by 5% in the first half of 2022 according to a research firm. oreo is hiking prices 6 to 7%.

43 in palo alto. 42 in redwood city. the 30s will be getting even colder, because once the clouds move out the showers will move in and we will see the impact of the changing weather. it's a wintry mix down through southern california. here's a closer look at where storm ranger is picking up. there's light showers. it will pick up around 7:00 a.m. through the 11:00 a.m. hours. tuesday, 8:00 a.m., you can see some of the mix right there where you see the white and the pink coming down. it's not going to be as heavy as yesterday morning's commute where it was heavy downpours at times and moderate, but it will be between light and moderate. this will continue all day long, all the way through 7:00. you can still see rain shadowing down through the south bay and palo alto. as we head towards the evening hours, we get a little bit of that backing out even more.

as far as rainfall totals, not as heavy as yesterday but just a couple 0.01 of an inch, less than that in san josé. higher elevations could see more. you will hear this probably all week long when it comes to record rainfall, san francisco hitting a record on the 26th. that's this past sunday. for comparison, 2021 over 15 inches. 2020, we only saw two inches. on average, we should see a little over 7 1/2 inches. that's a good little comparison to give you when it comes to how much rain we got this year, and how much we have seen versus what we should normally get around here. cold and breezy at times. once the breeze picks up that's when the windchill factor really starts to play a role because it feels colder than it really is, the windchill. south lake tahoe, i would not advise heading up there even if

the roads open up, at least not for the next two days. an advisory remains in place through wednesday night. good news, new year's eve looks dry but cold, guys. we will monitor the fog, of course. pleasant conditions for driving, no spinouts reported. two major crashes, though. peninsula, southbound 101 closed just after 4:00 a.m. traffic is forced off at marsh because of the crash at the willow overpass right there. you can't get on until university. folks are driving on willow. they are forced back over to middlefield and back on. use university and avoid that backup. then another crash, and it's a major injury crash here on 101,

laura garcia has the week off. >> i am marcus washington. don't need to tell you this, but it's cold out side, and parts of the bay area are starting to see snow. vianey is in for kari this morning. she has the latest on that. when you say snow in the bay area, people say, what? >> yeah, it's normal to see it above 4,000 feet at the highest peaks, and when it gets lower people get scared like marcus, what? it's still going to be pretty dangerous if you had plans to drive up to tahoe, but i want to take you to your current temperatures right now. the good news is there's not much of a wind factor right now so it doesn't feel as bitterly cold but still in the 30s. 38 degrees in morgan hill. 38 in napa. 36 in santa rosa. once we get some clearing of the cloud cover and we get the rain moving in, which satellite radar really depicts what is going on,

we still have an active weather rain pattern. scattered showers not as heavy as yesterday expected for today. you can see it's starting to pick up rain in millbrae valley, and san francisco as well. it's lighter compared to yesterday but the story will be right here. you see this wintry mix. it could create sleet. i see roads out there especially for some of the sheltered valleys. let's get a check of the roads. >> right now none reported in chp. what this is, still the closure for southbound 101 heading out the menlo park. there's the overpassing there, and that's where the closure is now on the peninsula because of a deadly crash involving a motorcycle. as traffic builds on city streets, folks are getting on to 101 at willow, they cannot do that, they have to go back to middlefield and get back on at university, and that's the

better route. without the backup, you get over there via middlefield and you are okay, or take bay front and back to marsh. we did have the traffic break, 280 near 680 in san josé. i will follow-up on that report and once they update it i will let you know. back to you. >> thank you, mike. the recent rainstorms have brought a record amount of snow in sierra. they have gotten more than 16 feet of snow, and this is breaking a record set in 1970. >> we're at about 66% of what we would expect in the entire snowfall season. at this point we need another ten feet of snow to get up to where we would have an average snowpack season. after that point, then it can all go towards relieving the drought. >> he says they actually have been getting a mixture of light

and powdery snow. if you are planning a trip to the sierra or know somebody there right now, we want to help you out with any plans. we have full details on the whiteout conditions and full ski resort closures and conditions right there on the trending bar. what does this mean for essential workers and travelers affected by the surge in cases amid the omicron outbreak. hundreds of flights have been canceled or delayed due to airline worker shortages and sick calls. hi, tom. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kira. yeah, the union is questioning

if this is right because of the covid surge. they agree it will be getting more workers back on the job, and over the holiday weekend there was 80 cancelations here at sfo alone. this change would get travelers out of isolation, and cut in half the time flight attendants and other employees are away from work after positive tests, and airlines were among the industry leaders asking for a shorter period of time to quarantine. dr. anthony fauci defended the move. >> it's safe to do that. if you look at the chance of getting a transmission in the second half of the 10-day period, it's considerably less than in the first few days. on balance, if you look at the safety of the public and the need to have society not disrupted, this was a good

choice. >> meanwhile the largest flight attendant's union said it gives corporate america exactly what it was requesting, and there are a couple caveats. those workers who are returning after just five days, they do have to wear masks and they do have -- for another five days, and they have to be asymptomatic also before they return to work. thom jensen for "today in the bay." >> thanks, thom. yesterday their fourth full day of deliberations and left without a verdict. the judge told the jurors if they wanted to continue to

the year. >> yeah, we are seeing more rain today. yesterday we got an additional half an inch to three fourths of an inch in some spots. but santa rosa is looking good. 21 inches so far. san francisco, we saw that set a new record with over 15 inches. livermore, 10 1/2 inches, and san josé a little over six inches. over ten inches above average for santa rosa. this is great. now, we still have years and years to really put a dent in the drought. remember, it took us a long time to get into the extreme drought, so it will take a lot more rain and storms and all of that to really get us out. at least it improved in some parts in the upper bay. and people are asking, is it going to rain on new year's? no, good news, though we could

have patchy clouds and fog. into friday, we're dipping down into the 30s. the first weekend of the new year is going to remain dry. danville right now at about 48 degrees on saturday. 50 degrees on sunday. just a little sneak peek, we are expecting to see more rain on the way into the first week of the new year, so i will have a look at that coming up in a few minutes. mike, how are the roads? >> we continue with a lighter overall look at traffic. on the peninsula, if you are just joining us, we are following the crash that happened just after 4:00 a.m., and it was around willow road, southbound 101 at marsh and the backup forming towards menlo park. you can get back on at university to get to palo alto if you are heading southbound. 280 on the peninsula, also clear. here's the bay bridge toll plaza.

a little more traffic volume, and a lot less issues like wind. new year's celebrations are just around the corner, and you can get a free ride on various transit services. muni offering free services from friday at 8:00 p.m. to saturday. regular prices will remain in place. the last east bay-bound train running through downtown san francisco will be around 1:30 a.m., and the last southbound train heading millbrae will run through downtown san francisco at 2:10 a.m. at 5:40 this morning, what happened to a small plane that crashed in southern california? the investigation under way this morning. plus, sunday night football

i will talk about the latest in the sierra forecast and, of course, your local snow here potentially in the bay area, coming up. you see the taillights heading north on 101, you notice no headlights heading south because traffic forced off the freeway at 101 and marsh. we will show you how to get around that if you are traveling in that area at this time. this morning we are getting a closer look at the moments leading up to a police shooting that left a 14-year-old girl dead. the los angeles police department is releasing body camera footage from last week's shooting inside a burlington coat factory. a warning, you may find this video disturbing. police responded to the call of a man assaulting a woman and reports of a possible active shooter. investigators say one officer fired three shots at the 24-year-old suspect ultimately killing him but one of the

officers' bullets went through a wall and into a dressing room killing the girl inside. the victim was just 14. she was in the dressing room with her mother trying on dresses for her keen sinneta. >> such a sad story. developing in san diego county overnight, a plane explodes after crash into a intersection near el cajon. it shows the moment here it began descending from the sky. they do not know where that plane was coming from and how many people were onboard. this is from a video that went live on facebook. they did not find any survivors at the crash scene. >> nobody was impacted on the ground. there were no injuries or further fatalities on the ground. the only fatalities we are

assuming right now are those in the aircraft and we don't know how many there were in the aircraft. >> the cause of the crash is still unknown at this time. at a crucial moment in the season for the 49ers, jimmy garrapalo has suffered an injury. he missed practice yesterday because of a right thumb injury, and he called it a sprain. there are multiple reports it could be worse than that, a torn ligament and fracture. this comes as the 49ers are on the cusp of making the playoffs. he will be re-evaluated tomorrow. fingers crossed. >> yeah. if you need something new to watch, imdb is out with their top movies and shows for 2021. >> here is their best pick for movies. >> "dune" came in as number one.

>> yeah. >> good day to catch up on those today, guys. it's going to be cold so bundle up and get your blanket. get your candles -- kira knows i love my candles. if you love to bake, power to you. bake something good and delicious. we are going to see snow in some of our local bay area tops and shower activity popping up on the stormranger now. the active weather patterns, look at this wintry mix up in the mountain tops. mount hamilton has been seeing snow since the weekend. things are calm, which is helping with the windchill factor. temperatures in the 30s. 36 degrees in santa rosa. 38 in napa. then we have 30s down through morgan hill in the gilroy area. by the afternoon, we will warm up just a little bit, but what

we are looking out for is the shower activity. once a little bit of the cloud cover clears out, our temperatures are going to top out in the 40s and 30s for some of the hilltop areas. that's what is going to bring the potential for the snow levels. look at the time stamp right up there, tuesday at 8:30. if you notice in some of our mountain top areas, once the showers really begin to push through it sort of remains on and off again all day so we will get a little sun and then the showers will start coming down, and then we will get a little sun, and the snow levels will drop down to 2,500 and maybe less than that. wednesday morning, we could see another round of rain. if you are in the north bay, you could expect to see snow on top of the mountain high peaks. we will see showers into wednesday night, and once this clears out on wednesday we have a little drying pattern into thursday, friday and saturday.

for the new year we are going to be cold but dry, but heading into next week, the first official week of 2022, by sunday night into monday, right now models are showing another round of rain, which could mean several days of rain here in the bay area adding to our rain total. it's going to shape up to be an active start to the new year, but we will not have rain if you plan to enjoy fireworks outside. make sure you bundle up. it could be breezy and temperatures could drop down into the 30s and you don't want to be unprepared for that. overall, we have lighter traffic as we expect between christmas and new year's, and we have a closure with a major crash on highway 101. highway forced off at southbound 101 at marsh and get over to middlefield or front bay

expressway, and then folks trying to get on at 101 at willow cannot -- oh, changing the sensors. they may have reopened one lane. i was hoping that would happen before 6:00 a.m. we see all the activity north of the over crossing, and we will double-check with chp and see why that sensor may be an indicator of there. and there is consistent slowing here for 84 cutting through livermore, pleasanton and down towards sunol. there's slowing where it funnels into one direction. there may be construction that is continuing there, so just know that. back to you. >> thanks. on the "today" show, our own chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri is filling in for al roker. >> good morning and hello, bay area, it's chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri, coming to you from new york city and the rockefeller center.

welcome back. the time is 5:56. you are watching "today in the bay." it's time for the climate in crisis series. a arctic temperature was reached in a siberian town last year during a prolonged heat wave that caused widespread alarm about the intensity of global warming. the record temperatures were hit on june 20th, 2020. it's 71 miles north of the

our website, nbcbayarea.com. i will send it back to you, kira. >> thanks. there are new developments in the case of of a colorado truck driver sentenced to 110 years in prison for a deadly crash. a judge scheduled a hearing for january 13th to reconsider ma dario's sentence following widespread outrage over the severity of the punishment, as well as an unusual request by prosecutors to revisit the sentence. the judge said victims would be able to speak at the in-person hearing about whether he should be resentenced, but noted he did not want to go through that stress unless they wish to. about 5 million people signed an online petition seeking clemency for him. and green is among the warriors in protocol including
