thanks for joining us. >> not seeings much rain in the south bay, but i want to show you what our storm ranger is picking up right now. we have plenty of instability out there and we'll have rain to showers throughout the day. periods of on-and-off rain. periods down 101. look at the santa cruz area. no rain down there just yet, but your overall daytime highs are going to be chilly once again. we're in the 40s to start. no 30s just yet. 41 degrees in fairfield. napa, 42. san jose, 45. here's a closer look at your afternoon highs. showers will continue. it's going to be a little bit breezy through tonight, and then we've got a chilly night ahead. overnight lows will drop down into the 30s.

this could bring more snow for our highest peaks once again in the bay area tonight. i'll have a closer look at your forecast coming up in a few minutes. the nation and bay area mourning the loss of a legendary nfl coach john madden. he died yesterday at the age of 85. madden was much more than just a coach. he was a larger than life figure in broadcasting and a pioneer in the world of video games. the bay area native lived in pleasanton but grew up in daly city. he led the oakland raiders to their first super bowl. he had more than 100 wins before he retired in 1979. a longtime sports writer who covered madden remembers the coach's passion and fire. >> his fights with al davis over, you know, whether ken stable should be the starting quarterback are kind of legendary because madden believed that a guy who wins is the guy you play, and al liked guys with big arms.

>> yeah. no surprise here. many in the sports world posting tributes to madden. nfl posted the pictures of all the madden covers from video games. you know what? the las vegas raiders said, quote, there will never be another. richard sherman and lebron james also sent condolences to his family. we're going to turn to the latest on the pandemic. the new numbers show how fast the variant is spreading. the u.s. added nearly 500,000 new cases yesterday alone. that's a new one-day record with the omicron variant now being the dominant strain. now the cdc is reporting over 63,000 people are in the hospital with the virus nationwide. after a reporting delay over the holiday weekend, california numbers have suddenly jumped. our positivity rate has quadrupled in the last two weeks to nearly 10%. california is averaging more

than 8,600 new cases a day, and we've just become the first state to record 5 million total cases. health leaders are now urging californians go back to the basics, including canceling major new year's eve events, shutting down businesses, and wearing masks at every indoor business once again. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside a gym where that event is taking place today. hey, bob. >> reporter: yes, people working out behind me in this 24-hour fitness facility in san ramon are now requiring again to mask up when inside. contra costa county is requiring it of all indoor businesses and requiring it of people regardless of their vaccination status. in the past weeks, many who were vaccinated were allowed to leave their masks off, but the new

omicron variant has made it too risky. it's very contagious and spreads among not just the unvaccinated but the vaccinated as well. morin county plans to revise its exceptions for indoor masks. that county will make a formal announcement as soon as today. santa clara and san mateo counties have an indoor mask rue in place. that state has seen its cases spike as omicron spreads. it's possible new york could be giving us a preview of what's headed our way, and the infectious disease expert tells california they could end up seeing a bump in

hospitalizations. reporting live on "today in the bay," bob redell. today marks two years since the covid-19 was detected in a human from china. i spoke with the doctor about what we're still learning about the virus. >> the first thought is it came naturally from an animal. after all humans invade animals through housing, commerce, or food. we're seeing more and more emerging infections. the second thought was a lab leak in wuhan. they have a big library of science viruses. maybe it was accidentally leaked. the third, of course, it was intentional, but, you know, it's very difficult to think somebody would unleash this virus intentionally.

>> i want to talk to you now about where we are. the holiday season, a lot of people are traveling. what should travelers be cautious of because you do have a lot of kids traveling unvaccinated. >> yes. travelers should be very, very careful. it's four times more transmissible than delta, which was twice as transmissible as the original strain. they have to up their covid game. in the old days you were wearing the cloth mask which i love because it's patterned, you can color coordinate. but you have to wear a better mask when you're traveling, a surgical mask that's well fitted, and by well fitted, you basically can tie a double not to make it fit snugger. you can double mask and still get your bling on by having the pattern on over you. avoid crowded spaces. having your kids masked if

some point today. it's going to be on and off throughout the afternoon. i want to take you through hour by hour. the rain is going to turn into showers. we're not seeing any in the south buenosly, but take a look at 8:30. we start to see rain pushing further southward into 9:00, 10:00, 11:00. rain at times. it's not going to be heavy widespread downpours, but it's going to get cold when the rain moves out, and because of the instability, there could be a slight chance for thunderstorm activity heading into the overnight hours. by tonight, the good news is for tomorrow we get a break from the rain. so we get a chance to actually dry out before, guess what, more storms move in. for now let's get a check of how the roads are doing with mike. >> if we get a break, at least you get a break, vianey. you haven't had one for a while. over here we're not getting a break. there was a traffic break west 580 approaching the castro

because it's still going to be raining. you can't see all that much. about 46 degrees right now and storm major is scanning and showing some rain. light to moderate at times coming down right now. we're seeing rain moving into richmond. not much right now in the scots valley-santa cruz area, but you will see rain, especially through the first half of the morning. bringing it back up to richmond, the vallejo area. not so much for the south bay right now. san jose still pretty dry. mountain view hitting some pockets. if you hit some of those spots where the rain starts coming down, then the rain goes away. right now current temperatures in the 40s. so not as cold as yesterday. remember we had those low to mid-30s yesterday? 40 degrees in dublin. 45 in oakland. 46 in san francisco. and your daytime highs are going

to warm up just a little bit. we're going to stick to the 50s around the coastline and also down to the south bay, about 50 degrees in san jose. so we're still expecting a pretty chilly night ahead. and that's because as the rain continues to sort of move in and out, we've still got a slight chance for thunderstorm activity and more snow for some of the higher peaks because it's going to get colder into tonight. and once that rain starts to clear up, here's how much rain you can expect to get. overall, about a half an inch, a quarter of an inch in some spots. right now look at lake tahoe. the rain is coming down. i know we've been seeing stormy conditions. over the next three days, we're expecting conditions to improve when it comes to the weather. however, there's still a winter weather advisory in effect until 10:00 p.m. because it's going to be windy and rainy. conditions like that, you don't want to drive in. showing even more snow pushing through the first week of january because we've got, guess what, more storms on the way

heading into sunday night and monday. 35 inches for kirkwood. you know our see areas snow pack has definitely benefitted beautifully from this. yesterday we were at 156%. now we've got an even bigger boost. now we're at 159% state average. it's been nice to see the snow coming down. long range model, i want to show you what some of the euro models are showing when it comes to the rain potential for next week. i took it to friday, january 7th. look at this. down through the rest of the bay area, a couple more inches heading into the first week. as far as your seven-day forecast, friday into saturday, oh, it's going to be dry, which is great news, but it's going to be so cold. personally i'm a fan of what kira said, enjoying fireworks from my tv. it's just a good time. marcus -- not marcus. michael, i send it to you.

>> i go by mike, but that's fine. over here by castro valley, if you go by the boulevard as you pass on the 580, that's where the crash is. that area still has two lanes blocked. that's why you have the continuing alert from chp. it's slowing as you come off the dublin grade. that continues over toward that area. there's been no updates from b.a.r.t. regarding anything going on from the track. we're still watching because that crash may have some debris over there. a smoother flow of traffic, light traffic. you can slow down a bit. you need to. a lot of rain through contra costa county. the toll plaza got a lot of rain. vianey showed that around the area. back to you.

in elizabeth holmes' fraud trial arcnd that day could be today. >> it could be the jury's sixth day of deliberations. they begin in just hours. kris sanchez is on the beat with where the jury stands. hey, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you. the judge did tell the jury he was available all week if they had any questions or wanted clarifications. so far they've only taken him up a number of times. so far in their five days of deliberating, the jury asked only one question. they asked to rehear one piece of evidence, which was a phone call between holmes and investors. our legal analystings say that could mean they're all on the same page. if it seems it's taking a wall, it's because the case is very complex, there are 11 charges, and the jury knows there's a lot at stake. >> they face cameras every day. i think they understand this is a high-profile case and it's a

area. the cdc says the omicron variant currently accounts for 60% of all new cases in the u.s. here's a live look in san francisco where the surge is now shaking up some new year's plans. you could say messing up. the city announcing it's calling off the annual fireworks celebration over the bay. health leaders are now urging all who plan to gather this friday to stay safe by taking rapid tests an hour or two before hand, wear your mask, and make sure everyone you're with is vaccinated. speaking of tests, i want you to take a look at this. these are the kinds of crowds you should expect through the holidays if you're expecting to get a covid test. we flew over the grounds yesterday. this is where they found hundreds of people waiting in line to get tested. many at-home test kits are selling out at stores. santa clara county is

issuing a new mandate that will have thousands more lining up for booster shots. the new health order will require all health care workers at higher-risk settings to get a covid booster shot by january 24th. it will impact about 150,000 workers. it will impose an earlier deadline than a similar state order and it includes a group the state order does not, those who work in shelters for the homeless. now to lake tahoe where family and friends continue to hold out hope as they search for a skier who hasn't been seen since christmas morning. rescue crews are having a hard time getting extra equipment to help because of the horrible weather out there. the skier went up a lift and never came down. he works at the ski shop next door. his sister tells us he's an avid

skier, recently moved from colorado. rescue crews were sent out but it's difficult to get to him because of the road closures due to the snow. the mountain picked up another foot or so of snow. in mammoth, they've seen 12.5 feet at the lodge this month, making it one of the snowiest decembers on record. let's talk about the rain across the bay area. we've seen a lot of it over the past several days. our storm ranger is scanning the san bruno mountain. has this rain put a dent in california's severe drought? that is the big question. vianey is in with us right now. lot's talk about the numbers. >> as you know, marcus, it took us a long time to get into the extreme drought. it's going to take a lot to get out of it. san francisco hit a new high. look at that.

over 15 inches of rain. santa rosa has seen 21-plus inches of rain so far. even through rain shadows, san jose, 6 inches so far. we're doing pretty good from october 1st since july 1st. even though it may not put a major dent in our drought, look at the reservoirs. three of the reservoirs here, look at this. 56% of historical average. so these rainfall totals are helping boost that. in addition to that, as you know, we got a lot of snow. >> we're certainly good. >> right, exactly. you know, let's take a look at this. we're still doing, you know, pretty good when it comes to the yellows up here in the north bay. we saw a bit of an improvement. we went from an extreme to some moderate conditions. but 79% of the state of california remains under an extreme drought. so we still have several more storms to go before we really even take a dent at this

drought. the good news here is it looks like we're starting out 2022 rather strong. the reason why, we've got plenty of storms on the way starting sunday night, heading into the first week of 2020. this is something we definitely like to see around here. hopefully this helps boost our dry conditions into better conditions even more. all right. let's see how the roads are doing. mike. >> vianey, look. this is what you were talking about. we're watching the east shore roadway. this is why. murky conditions. this is westbound. with the taillights you can kind of see them through the blur, making their way toward the bay bridge, coming off the bay bridge. that's what keeps things moving smoothly. but those conditions don't allow for you to go at speed for much of your bay area commute. be careful. holding steady, though. we're looking at the same for highway 37. we haven't seen this for ten

repairing b.a.r.t. equipment. we'll talk about that and the impact that it's having coming up. overnight, a deadly shooting on peninsula. it happened around 8:00 last night. police say they found a man with gunshot wounds on the ground of an apartment complex parking lot. he later died at the scene. so far there's no motive and the police are searching for a suspect. this is the sixth homicide in the city this year and a second homicide in less than a week. the other recent homicide happened on christmas eve on beach street. the parents of a 14-year-old girl who was accidentally shot and killed by the lapd police spoke out for the first time. it happened at a burlington coat factory two days before christmas. it shows police fatally shooting a man seen on video beating a customer with a bike lock. authorities say preliminary evidence shows one of their

bullets bounced off a tile floor and killed 14-year-old valentina who was trying on dresses in a dressing room for her keen sierra. >> my daughter was special. she had dreams, and tragically those dreams have been overshadowed by this nightmare. >> it's being investigated by the police department, the district attorney, and the state attorney general. harry reid has died. he passed away yesterday after a four-year battle with cancer. the political heavyweight served a senator in nevada from 1987 to 2017 and was a majority leader from 2007 to 2015.

tonight. look at that. so we've got a couple of pockets. let's zoom in using our doppler. light to moderate at times and in through danville, a couple of areas along 680. it's interesting. you'll be driving on the freeway and you'll catch a stretch of rain and then it will sort of die down and clear out. no significant heavy downpours continuing throughout the day. it's more like on-and-off again rain. temperatures in the. 45 in san jose, 45 in oakland, 46 in san francisco, and your afternoon highs are going to remain pretty chilly like we've been seeing the past couple of days. that cold air has really been making an impact. one degree warmer in san jose potentially, so we'll take it. estimated rain the next few days as i mentioned, today is the last day for the remainder of these series of storms we're going to see. we're going to get anywhere from a couple hundreds of an inch to over a quarter in some of the higher elevations.

south lake tahoe conditions, this is one question viewers have definitely been asking, those who have been trying to get up there. conditions are going to improve when it comes to calming snow and sunshine. there's still a winter weather advisory until 10:00. that's because it is rainy and windy, and it's still cold enough to where we could see overnight slow slowing down friday into saturday for new year's eve. but still check the road conditions. i know a lot of roads are still closed. looking out ahead to next week, if you had plans to get to the sierra, your window of opportunity is going to be on saturday and early surchld because by monday we get another round of storms. that's going to bring more sierra snow and more rain. in case you missed it, we did hit new record snow in the sierras. december 1970, 179 inches. in december 2021, over 200 inches of snow. that is incredible. this is according to the uc berkeley central sierra snow

spending millions to add to his hawaii paradise. he purchased 110 acres in the island of kauaiy. it cost him $17 million. zuckerberg and his wife priscilla chen say they're committing to following required conditions. the mexican government says it will allow cruise ships carrying covid-19 people to dock there. it comes after two ports refused to allow passengers ashore because their ships had positive cases. the health department says passengers or crew who show no symptoms will be allowed to come ashower. those with symptoms or a positive virus test will be quarantined or given medical care. mexico is one of the few countries in the world that has
