new year's eve forecast. you have been saying it, bundle up in your new christmas coat. >> yeah, if you got one, bundle up. tonight will be the scariest night for your dog babies. don't you dare leave them in your backyard and they run away and end up in the shelters, and i will be so upset if i hear about lost pets because you left them out in your yard. i bundle up binks. it's going to be another cold start to our day, frosty conditions for the interior valleys. look at santa rosa, 35 degrees. napa, 33. oakland 38. concord, 36. in through the south bay in the 40s now and we are only going to

be in the low 50s today. it will be chilly and breezy and it will get even colder, and i will take you through that timing in just a few minutes. back to you. >> vianey, thanks. we have been talking about covid cases rising all week, and they are rising sharply across the bay area, with all nine counties seeing some type of surge. some counties are reporting the highest number of cases they have seen since the pandemic began. take a look at this map so far this week. contra costa, marin, san francisco and santa clara counties all hit a single day record for new covid cases. a closer look for you at santa clara county where on monday the county reported more than 2,300 new cases. that actually surpasses the single day record of 2,200 cases back on january 5th. >> at 2022 approaches, this variant is forcing families to

alter their new year's celebrations to stay safe. many opting for smaller gatherings at home to stay safe. infectious disease expert at stanford said, despite all the cautions, next week expect to seat cases increase. >> we have this this for the last two years. if you are fully vaccinated and boosted, most of those cases, we are hoping, will be mild. >> if you still plan to party, you know what to do. experts say make sure everybody is vaccinated and boosted and get tested for covid before and after the celebration ahead of returning to school and work on monday. this is the last day of 2021. there are new laws going into effect for the year as well.

>> kris is moving us forward with what we need to know. >> we have new laws that are going to impact your wallet, because we will start with those because maybe we did a little spending over the holidays. come january 1st, california's minimum wage increases to $15 for any employer with 26 or more employees. it will be $14 for those who have fewer than 25 employees. this move is an incremental raise that began back in 2016. we're on track here. staying on top of your finances, changes are coming to the mangled state unemployment system. after the edd department was swamped during the pandemic, it was revamped.

it allows applicants to change or correct any mistakes on their applications before they are disqualified. that will be helpful for a lot of people. suburbs across the state, senate bill 9 in september, it was legislation that would simplify the process for homeowners to divide their residential property or add a unit or convert an existing unit into a duplex. in 2022, several laws relating to policing will go into affect. assembly bill 481 will require law enforcement agencies to get approval before they can buy anything considered military equipment, like armored vehicles and bearkats, as they call them, and changes as to when and why

the flames sparked when power lines fell yesterday morning. i suppose this must be it. you can see wind whipping ash and debris around the parking lot. in some places winds were gusting up to 100 miles per hour making the firefight extremely difficult for crews. >> how about a bird's-eye view of the same fire. this taken from somebody in the bay area flying over colorado last night. >> the fire is now the most destructive in state history with almost 500 homes burned. >> the governor declaring the state of emergency there. >> oh, my god. >> smoke, flames, chaos, as historic winds push fire into neighborhoods, homes, built and cherished over life times, gone in minutes. >> boulder county is around

hello. it's 5:13 and it is so cold outside. you're not imagining it. we are in the 30s, it's about 36 degrees right now and because of the windchill it feels colder. expect that for tonight's new year's eve forecast, and we have more coming up in just a few minutes. wall street set to open

slightly lower on the final trading day of the year. the dow snapped a six-day winning streak. the nasdaq and s&p is on track to finish the week, month and year with solid gains. the markets gains have been broad-based. ikea is raising prices by an average of 9% as the world's largest furniture brand faces higher costs for shipping and materials. it previously said it was leasing more ships to help offset supply chain issues but will now have to pass those costs off to consumers. and then tiktok grabbing the top spot as the highest downloaded app.

after a storm yesterday. after a very cold weekend, just to sort of give you a look ahead, we are going to see a much more mild sort of first week of january, but we're also going to see some more rain, so right now if you were wondering, is it really cold? yes, it's in the 30s. this is cold, guys. 36 degrees in concord. it's the windchill that makes it even colder, so it's about 35 in santa rosa, but it feels more like 31. saratoga right now, 37 degrees. down through st. martin, 36 degrees. in through the morning hours, after we warm up just a little bit with the sunshine, we are still going to stay in the 50s. it's going to be similar to yesterday's forecast when it comes to the daytime highs. if you enjoyed yesterday's forecast, i think you will like today's forecast as well. monday, let's look ahead, we are expecting the arrival of another storm and this is trending a

little further north up through portland and seattle. we will see rain for the north bay and north coastal mountains. by thursday night into friday, we will see the arrival of another system. this one could be a little more widespread, possibly, you know, for the entire bay area bringing a little more higher rain totals. also, more sierra snow. how much snow are e we expecting, and we are doing a fantastic job. we have seen record snowfall up in the north bay -- actually, northern california and southern california. saturday through january 8th, we could see several more inches of snow, up in kingvale and the kirkwood area as well. by tonight those cool temperatures will dip into the 40s for san francisco. if you are going to be in any of the inland areas, expect to see low 30s. saturday morning, it will be really nice, about 51 degrees. another cool start on sunday and

again, this impacts the following bridges, the antioch, the bay bridge, benicia, carquinez, dumbarton, where i am at, richmond and san mateo, but does not impact the golden gate bridge toll. >> i find it strange, and i don't remember them talking about it and it goes up all of a sudden, seems strange, but it must have been approved. >> he's correct. three toll increases with senate bill 595, and the voters approved the toll hikes. there's a legal challenge senate bill 595 and regional measure 3 is pending before the california supreme court, so the toll increase collected will be put

into a trust and will be managed by a trustee until the litigation is resolved. >> but you are paying one way or the other. thanks, bob. new this morning, the fda planning to expand eligibility for pfizer covid-19 booster shots. the person with knowledge of the plan tells nbc news the agency will expanded eligibility to children ages 12 to 15 in the coming days. currently that age group can get the first two doses but not the booster. the news is the pending apraofl first reported by "the new york times." the omicron variant continues to spread rapidly in the u.s., accounting for about 58% of all new covid cases for the week that ended saturday, that's according to the cdc. happening today, state superintendent will hold a conference on the importance of testing students before they

return to school. at 10:00 a.m., there will be a drive-up test distribution for counties, and then the superintendent will district more test kits. hospitals across the bay area are bracing for a rough few weeks as the omicron cases rise, but the chair of the ucsf medical system spelled out why the bay area could see a fall in cases. we have higher vaccination rates in south africa where the unvaccinated have the most severe cases, including death. but the vaccinated, breakthrough infections are mild, so when somebody lives through it they will have added immunity. >> pretty much the whole population will have immunity. >> hospitals like valley medical center in san josé already set

22-year-old oakland woman during an attempted armed robbery. this happened last month just before 12:30 a.m. on lakeshore avenue near lake the woman was shot and died two days later. and then crews were able to knock down a fire just before 11:00 last night. it's not clear what started that fire. a new warning as we head into the new year. don't burn wood in your fireplace or your wood stove. the bay area air quality management district is urging people not to burn wood to prevent air pollution. and they are asking people not to set off fireworks because it can contribute to pollution. it's good my kids got their

more detail so you know how significant the impact of the latest rain has been, and much forecast coming up in a few minutes. 5:42. new developments, colorado's governor shortening the prison sentence of a truck driver convicted of a deadly crash to ten years. the 110-year term led to outrage. he was convicted of vehicular homicide and other charges in that explosive 2019 pileup that killed four. the crash came after his brakes failed and he skipped at least one earlier runaway truck ramp.

the bare minimum to address climate change. >> scientist say any warming beyond 2 degrees would be catastrophic. as winter carried on, texas endured an event when there was a breakdown of the polar vortex crippled the state's power grid, leaving residents freezing, without water and in the dark for days. in the northwest, it was sporadic weather patterns connected to climate change that created a once in a millennium heat wave, resulting in some of the highest temperatures recorded in the region, temperatures in portland, seattle and parts of canada soaring well above 100 degrees. at least 228 people dying in washington state and oregon alone. 2021 will go down in history as

the hottest summer on record in the united states. mega fires burning in the west for months, and the bootleg fire burning more than 413,000 acres, and the dixie fire becoming the second largest to ever scorch parts of california. >> i did not know whose house was what. it was a wasteland. >> grateful to be alive. we have each other. >> while not as prolific as the record-shattering 2020 record, 2021, there were seven named storms. while the east got too much water, the bone-dry west finally hit a tipping point. lake mead dropping to its lowest level ever.

even colder in napa, 33. 40s down through the south bay. let's get you to the afternoon, because i know you will be out and you will wonder, will it be sunny at all? yes, it will be sunnier today than yesterday. yesterday we woke up to cloud cover. daytime highs will be in the 50s. 52 degrees in hayward. santa rosa, 51. i want to take you through a little bit of a drought monitor reminder. yesterday, you might have seen this over social media, the improvement we saw thanks to all of the recent series of storms. the d-4 category, the worst of the drought monitor index has been pretty much eliminated. less than 1% for the entire state of california, completely gone for the bay area. most of the bay area is under

the d-2 category. notice we still have a ways to go because we are still in a drought, so it will take a lot more rain and all of that, and also you have to take into account the weather conditions matter, hotter days, hotter climate, it plays a role in this as well. and then we have also seen an increase in the lexington reservoir, and on december 1st was at 22%, and we have seen a rise up to 48.8% right now. with more rain on the way, that could definitely help ease our outlook. the three largest reservoirs in the state of california, 57% of historical average. we could use a little more boost up there, and we have seen a ton of rain and snow in the month of december, so what can we expect into the first week of january?

well, with the nice numbers that we are seeing when it comes to the rainfall totals, record highs -- i should say record-high totals and record sierra snowpack, it will nice to see more rain move in. enjoy the break, but we have rain expected monday to midweek, mainly for the north bay, though. a couple showers through the south bay, this was expected to move in thursday into friday. we will see how that plays out, and that could pack a little more of a punch. here's the last look at what to expect, and so cool temperatures, 52 degrees. highs remain in the 50s. by tuesday, rain at times and then notice on wednesday and thursday we see rain move in again on thursday. we will get the breaks in the rain between monday and thursday, where it starts to rain, and then it sort of gets sunny, and then it starts to

block the release of his white house records is scheduled to hold a news conference at his mar-a-lago resort in florida. a worker at the zoo was bitten by a tiger could face criminal charges. a sheriff's deputy shot and killed the tiger at the zoo on wednesday evening after it would not release the worker's arm from its mouth. the man worked for a cleaning company responsible for restrooms and the gift shop and was not authorized to be where he was. the sheriff's office said in a statement an investigation would determine whether charges would be filed against the injured workers but did not say what the charges would be. a family-run restaurant that became a favorite spot to many in the south bay is closing. it survivored the pandemic, but the increased rent proved to be
