30 seconds. [ mittens squeaking ] we do have temperatures in the 30s, but by tonight it will be colder heading into new year's eve. we will see a cold and chilly night but the rain stays away for the entire bay area. through the new year of 2022 into sunday, check out monday and tuesday into next week. we are expecting more rain on the way for the first week of january, but overall enjoy your new year's eve. it will be dry but it will be cold. 2021 has been a busy year in politics it began with an insurrection that is still being investigated president biden is about to mark his first year in the white house. joining us with a look at what 2022 will hold, our chief white house correspondent and weekend "today" host kristin welker.
7:07 am
>> it is great to be with you. >> in some ways we will begin 2022 as we did 2021, covid being top of mind. >> it certainly is, savannah covid is the top issue for this administration president biden's presidency will be determined by his handling of this issue so what to expect? well, look, we're in a moment where the omicron and delta variants are increasing, and, so, that is going to be the central focus in the new year. i'm told there is not going to be any new legislation around covid. but, savannah, they will be iru people to get vaccin of course it impacts the economy as well, so expect an increased focus on trying to bring down inflation. of course that has been a big issue, increasing prices on just about everything, including
7:08 am
holiday gifts and holiday meals. so they will be trying to bring prices down by focussing on some of the supply chain issues at the ports as well as increasing pressure on big companies to keep their prices low. the ports as well as increasing pressure on big com the president's approval rating has been sinking, and his ability to handle these two issues, savannah, will determine whether he can increase his approval rating. of course that will be critical heading into the all-important midterm. >> you have 34 senate seats up for grabs, the entire house up for grabs and the potential for the power to change hands from the democrats to the republicans. >> that's right. the stakes could not be higher with both republicans, democrats trying to fight for who controls washington and, of course, democrats got that big wakeup call, savannah, in the last round of elections with republicans winning back
7:09 am
the virginia governorship and really having a strong showing in a number of other key races so what to expect in the mid-terms. you can expert democrats to taut what they see as president biden's top accomplishments. the fact that he did get a covid relief bill passed he passed his infrastructure bill but what to expect from republicans, well, they are going to focus on potentially taking a page from the play book of the governor-elect of virginia, glenn youngkin he walked a fine line when it came to former president trump he expected his endorsement but never appeared with him in public on the campaign trail this will be very fraught, and it will tell us a lot about the democrats' ability to hold on to key constituents to whelped them win the white house in 2020 like women and voters of color and of course those all-important suburban voters, savannah. >> how about it with president trump? because as you said, some candidates walk that fine line of whether to embrace him or how much to, but he is already
7:10 am
playing a huge role in midterms in terms of selection of candidates and where he puts his finger on the scale could have a big impact in those primary races. >> he's already playing a huge role, savannah that's right he's endorsed a number of candidates we expect him to be out on the campaign trail as he considers whether or not he's going to take another shot at it and run in 2024. of course looming over all of this is something you mentioned at the top, january 6th, that anniversary is coming up the january 6th commission trying to get to the bottom of what if any role president trump played in that moment, and they have been intensifying their flashes with former officials within his administration like the former chief of staff mark meadows. watch for all of that to play a significant role on the trail. and of course look for over potential hooks in 2024, including mike pence i am told he has a busy schedule
7:11 am
in the new year as well, and he's not going to base his decision on whether to run on his new boss. >> kristin welker, thank you so much happy new year. >> thank you. turning now from washington to wall street and more on the economic outlook for the new year, here is nbc senior business correspondent stephanie ruhle. okay 2021 was crummy. there was inflation. prices were up at super markets. gas everywhere it turned it seemed like you were paying more wholesale numbers were up. >> get ready. >> wait. what's happening in 2022 >> you are likely still going to be paying for. this idea that it's short term,
7:12 am
it's transitory, the fed chair jay powell recently said inflation is likely to be more stubborn than we thought it's all about the pandemic. with shortages, there hasn't been enough product at a time we saved up and wanted to go out again, so we wanted to spend that pushed up prices. what's keeping them high, well, we're spending we are out there we may not like the high prices but we're paying them. they're not incentivized to offer big sales and undercut one other. a good news, a lot of those supply chain issues are starting to work themselves out, so we won't be in this situation forever. but in the short term, it is a good idea to tighten the belt, save where you can because we will be with these prices for a bit. >> let's look at the stock market a bit it was a recovery time with the pandemic but if you are like a regular human beings at home who might invest the money in the stock market, do you think 2022 is a good time to invest? >> well, listen, it has been a great time to invest over the last few years, especially
7:13 am
because we had this accommodative monetary policy. meaning the fed really put these guard rails on the market to protect them they're not going to be doing that anymore since we're in this economic recovery, so things could get rocky. if interest rates get higher, that could impact the stock market when interest rates are at zero, there is nowhere to invest your money but the stock market when interest rates go up, it will be a little more difficult with stocks. >> some people wanted to buy a house in 2021, but prices were sky high, so they thought forget it i'll wait. is it worth the wait. >> i do not have a real estate crystal ball however, analysts say, again, this goes back to supply and demand during covid. we weren't building houses there has been a labor shortage, a lumber shortage and prices were higher. we are back building again also, when interest rates are at zero people buy houses. easy to borrow things are get a big more expensive. right now people buying houses are trying to lock in fixed rate mortgages because they're worried about inflation. >> if you are trying to bank money for retirement, there is a
7:14 am
deal that you can add an extra thousand dollars to your 401(k), which is great but what is the best way to save for retirement in 2022 >> just start saving it's years away. i don't need to do it. as soon as you can try to put 15% of your salary away in a 401(k) or a 401(k) type account if you haven't done much and you are 50, you can catch up and add more but the number one thing is, if you work at a company that matches your contributions, match it do it. that is actually free money. it is very rare i tell you there is free money. there is there. >> you always give good general advice for regular people watching right now wondering what it looks like ahead, what would be your best advice for someone who is thinking about the future >> so especially for people who are saying right now, i want to invest in the market they went to parties last year, i made this money. i made that. you can invest in the markets but it is about your time line if you need that money a year
7:15 am
from now for a wedding or a house, stock market is not your friend if you can invest for the long term, start to educate yourself. go to today.com/onthemoney we have advice for you please don't do it emotionally fear of missing out is never a way to socialize or invest. >> okay. >> there you go. >> another thing i learned from you today, stef. thanks craig, over to you. >> thank you let's wrap up with the latest medical headlines from vaccines to treatments and the big question: could 2022 be the year that the pandemic finally ends and for that we say good morning to nbc's medical correspondent dr. john torez good to see you in the flesh. >> good to see you as well really it is hard to believe come march that will mark two years since the world health organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic is 2022 the year that it ends? >> and it's been a completely bizarre two years we have had here and my crystal ball a as foggy as any expert's crystal ball we will see not an automatic switch going on where we're not in the pandemic the next day, but instead you will see a slow decline in cases around the world.
7:16 am
and then all of a sudden it will say, well, maybe we're not in this pandemic anymore. it is a squishy topic and a squishy way to do that we will get an endemic virus, which means we will be living with it. but i think it will end this year. >> endemic virus. >> that means basically think of measles. it's always here we control it with vaccines, but there are breakouts. and those outbreaks we have, we have to walk in, quarantine people, vaccinate people to keep it under control. >> speaking of vaccinations, 6 in 10 americans are fully vaccinated where are we right now in terms of the fight, shots in all arms, getting our ands around this disease. >> so 2022, the word of the year will be boosters the fda has authorized boosters
7:17 am
16 and above if you had an mrna vaccine, you are eligible for boosters. vaccines and boosters are the way we're going to control this pandemic, the way we're going to control the virus going forward. we know they're not as effective as we like, but the boosters are bumping up that effectiveness. and we also know that even though they might not be effective or very effective at controlling the sniffles, in other words, us feeling bad, they're great at controlling the big three, serious illness, hospitalizations and death at the end of the day, that's what we want. >> what about this magic pill that's been developed here that should be getting fda approval soon >> right there are a couple pills the fda is looking at. one is from merck. one is from pfizer have you ever had tamiflu for the flu? >> i actually have. >> you have to get tested early. it is another tool in our tool bag. we need all of these, convalescent plasma, these pills to control the pandemic. not one is going to do it. that's something we found out over the last couple years. >> let's talk about the flu. last year due in part because
7:18 am
everyone was wearing masks and weren't out and about a great deal, we saw a flu season that was pretty mild comparatively. what are we thinking about this flew season. >> i call it strange every doctor i've talked to said we've never seen this, but no patients in the er no real problems with the flu last year because we were wearing masks, we were socially distanced and importantly kids were not in school they're back in school we're not wearing masks as much. the concern is this will be a big flu year, so you need to get your flu vaccine now it takes two weeks to take effect it is not the most effective vaccine out there, but it does help prevent those hospitalizations and deaths, which at the end of the day we want the flu vaccine is not going to do anything to protect you from covid itself, but if your immune system stays strong by not getting the flu, then it can fight off covid as well, so it does help in the long run. >> that's really important.
7:19 am
