january storms and the rampant spread of the omicron variant proving too much for airlines and airports. >> they already pushed my flight back twice. i might miss my connection. >> reporter: nearly 1800 tsa officers off the job with covid. on sunday, flight aware showing 2700 canceled flights, more than 9,000 delays. all part of more than 12,000 cancellations over the last week. among the airports hardest hit, denver, chicago o'hare, and atlanta. >> it is usually a well oiled machine here. and it runs very smoothly. today it just isn't that way. >> reporter: jen fabian and her dad came to florida for gator bowl, but the weekend took a turn when delta canceled their flight home. after more delays caused them to miss a connection, they finally made it back home 22 hours later. >> just felt like every time my phone buzzed, it was a text from united saying your flight was

delayed. you get to the point where you're, like, okay, the trip isn't fun anymore. >> reporter: all of it coming at the worst time for passengers and airlines alike. >> the demand was higher, the stakes were higher and there are more people traveling, so it is harder to accommodate them on whatever flights are left. >> reporter: if your flight is delayed or canceled last minute, try to rebook yourself, using the airline's app, or an airport kiosk. if you have airline lounge access, consider seeing an agent there. one silver lining, airlines are trying to cancel or delay flights in advance. so -- >> keep checking your reservation. just stay on top of it. because the earlier you spot a problem, the easier it is to deal with. >> reporter: it's a tough day here. we mentioned 1800 flights canceled already. we do want to make note of the airlines hit hard. southwest airlines says it is already canceled more than 12% of the flights today. jetblue cancelling about 13%. sky west, 9%. that is the regional commuter airline. also united 4%. alaska 11%. it's going to be a tough day. hoda? >> all right, >> tom costello at reagan

national, thank you. now to the weather's impact on all of this including that winter storm that is walloping parts of the east coast. for that, we say good morning to mr. roker for first time and where is this? >> well, we're taking a look at wilmington, delaware, right now. this rain/snow line very tricky. we're watching this, monitoring it. let's show you what we got right now as far as watches, winter weather advisories. you can see we have got over 30 million -- 29 million people impacted. we got a risk of severe weather along the carolinas and tornado watches from the outer banks all the way down into south carolina. so we're watching this very closely. you can see right now we have got that snow stretching from central new york or new jersey all the way down to asheville. we have been seeing thundersnow from alabama through new jersey. so here's the timeline. snow falling, temperatures,

snowfall rates over 1 inch per hour. we get to philly, you're in it from 9:00 a.m. to noon. winter weather advisories, light to moderate snow, gusty winds, airport delays are going to be a problem. atlantic city, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., snowfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour, with near blizzard-like conditions. here's what we're looking for as far as what we see snowfall amounts before this thing is over. new york city, about an inch. philly, 2 to 4, d.c., 4 to 7, atlantic city, 6 to 10 inches of snow with this system. so this will move through pretty quickly, but in the meantime, a lot of misery through the morning commute into the early afternoon, guys. >> al, thank you. let's focus more on the mounting concern over skyrocketing covid infections. as we mentioned, the daily average of new cases over the last seven days is more than 425,000. and with kids heading back to class this morning, a number of school districts are temporarily switching to remote learning while others like right here in new york are holding in person classes with new safety measures in place.

nbc's stephanie gosk has details on this. steph, good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning. >> the fda has approved the pfizer booster for kids 12 to 15 and some children ages 5-11 with underlying conditions as long as they're five months out from the last vaccine. this as school systems around the country are trying to figure out how to get kids back into class safely. this city has been hit so hard over the holidays with new covid-19 cases, it 20% of police and sanitation employees have called in sick, even so as you say, the doors to schools are opening up to in person learning, amid very strict new testing protocols. this morning back to school jitters amplified by record covid-19 rates. a very mixed response from state. schools in atlanta, cleveland, and newark are opting to go remote temporarily, in new york, they saw 85,000 cases on new year's eve, the highest one day total ever. schools are still in person,

with students and staff now required to submit a negative test before returning. >> we can't close down our city every time there is a new variant. we can't allow our children to keep missing school. >> reporter: l.a. adopting the same protocol, but in detroit and washington, d.c., schools are delaying their start until midweek to allow more time for testing. massachusetts is bringing in the national guard to hand out test kits to families. but with a massive testing backlog, will the results come in time? in chicago, this video of an overflowing testing drop box for students and staff is raising concern. the biden administration has vowed to help, insisting widespread testing and keeping schools open is the right way to go. >> our students belong in the classroom and we can do it safely. >> reporter: in florida's miami-dade county where one in four people are testing positive for the virus, there is no testing mandate in schools. instead, staff and visitors must

now wear masks, with state law banning the same mandate for students. >> mandating masks would help slow and stop the spread. but the governor made it impossible for school boards to do that. >> reporter: it comes as the cdc faced pushback for new guidelines that asymptomatic people with covid can leave quarantine after five days, rather than ten without testing. dr. fauci now saying the cdc may update its guidance again. >> testing could be a part of that. i think we're going to be hearing more about that in the next day or so from the cdc. >> reporter: with this overall surge in cases among the entire population, it has also meant a surge in pediatric cases, nearly 200,000 in that week before christmas. that has led to an increase in hospitalizations as well. the vast majority of those patients being children who are unvaccinated with underlying conditions. hoda? >> steph, thank you. joining us now, dr. richard besser, former acting director of the cdc, now president and

ceo of the robert wood johnson foundation and we should also point out he happens to be a pediatrician. dr. besser, so happy to have you on this morning. i was imagining parents this morning getting their coats on their kids, zipping up the jackets, heading off to the bus stop and they're probably wondering is this a good idea. what should parents be thinking about this morning? >> yeah, you know good morning, hoda. this is a really challenging time. and i think next six weeks are going to be very challenging across the country. you know, thankfully the omicron variant is appearing to cause much milder illness. but just the fact that it is so contagious, i think it is going to make it very challenging for many schools to stay open. a lot of teachers, a lot of staff are going to come down with covid, and whether schools are going to be able to remain open with a limited staff with reduced staffing we'll have to see. i think in terms of children themselves, what parents can be thinking about is whether or not your school is requiring masks, having your children wear masks. if your child has symptoms of

covid, you know, anything that looks like a cold, keep them out of school and try and get them tested. i know it is very challenging to find test kits in many parts of the country. and if your child is in an age range where they are eligible for vaccination, talk to your doctor, get your questions answered. i really encourage parents to get their children vaccinated because that will reduce the chances even further that your child could have a severe infection with covid. >> you mentioned anecdotally it seems less severe, the omicron variant than others. what is research and data showing in small children and those who are unvaccinated? >> yeah, so, when you look at hospitalizations, severe illness, it is far and away much greater among people who are unvaccinated. so getting vaccinated is a big plus. there are reports of increased hospitalizations in children across the country, but as people are diving into that, many of those hospitalizations are for other conditions.

in children, they're tested and found to be positive for covid, but they were in the hospital for other things. and so it is going to take a little more time to really tell what is the risk, but as you see skyrocketing numbers of cases, even a lower risk of infection, when that many people are getting sick will put pressure on our healthcare system. so anything we can do to cut down on transmission will take the burden off our hospitals. when i think about our hospitals being full, taking care of people with covid, i worry about people who are having heart attacks, people who have cancer, people who have kidney disease and need to be taken care of. so even with milder covid, it can put strain on our healthcare system that could be really devastating. >> so we have just come off the holidays, this is when everyone was packed in together. is this going to be like the worst window where we are right now? and also, i was just thinking, everybody i know in the studio knows somebody who had it. are we on our way to herd immunity when it comes to omicron?

>> we could be. i think the next six weeks are going to be rough in the terms of numbers of cases. this could be the path out of this pandemic. as this variant spreads around and infects more and more people, hopefully the protection you get from having had an omicron infection will provide some protection from other variants. the key, though, i think to controlling this is focusing on global protection. we have done a terrible job at providing vaccines around the globe, and as we have seen with omicron, new variants can arise anywhere. so from an equity and justice standpoint, we need to do more. but in terms of our self-interest and being protected against future variants we have to do a lot more to make vaccines available to the entire global community. >> lastly, if you had a child getting ready to go to school this morning, would you send your child off to school? >> you know, i would. if my child had had medical conditions that put them at greater risk, i would talk to my doctor about that.

my children were in the age where they would be vaccinated, they would be vaccinated going off to school. but i would send my children off to school and, you know, if my school is taking this seriously and they have approached this with improved ventilation, mandating vaccination of teachers and staff and masks. if my school wasn't taking this seriously, i would be concerned about sending my child to school. >> dr. besser, good advice. thank you for being with us this morning. we appreciate it. >> thanks, hoda. >> lots of useful information. >> yeah. lots more to get to on this monday morning as we welcome in sheinelle. >> good morning. this week, the nation marked one year since the deadly january 6th insurrection on capitol hill. a solemn day of remembrance is planned in washington, even as the investigation into this siege continues. nbc's senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake has it covered for us. garrett, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we now know the solemn remembrances will include

remarks by the president at the capitol on thursday. but meanwhile, the efforts to understand exactly what happened here on the 6th and to prevent it from ever happening again continues. but a year out, it is clear there is still much more work to be done. this morning, the insurrection investigation focusing ever tighter on what former president trump did and did not do as the deadly january 6th attack unfolded. >> the committee has firsthand testimony that president trump was sitting in the dining room, next to the oval office, watching on television as the capitol was assaulted. that is clearly a supreme dereliction of duty. >> reporter: liz cheney also revealing multiple advisers asked trump to intervene, including republican leader kevin mccarthy and the former president's daughter. >> we have firsthand testimony that his daughter ivanka went in at least twice to ask him to please stop this violence. >> reporter: the bipartisan committee probing the actions of mr. trump and his allies in and out of government now seeing

testimony from some congressional republicans, along with white house aides and stop the steal activists. since its creation last summer, the committee says it has interviewed more than 300 people, and collected more than 35,000 pages of documents, including emails and text messages. while still battling the former president in court for more white house records. a spokesman for the former president telling nbc news the committee is, quote, obsessed with waging a political war against president donald j. trump. in the past year, 725 people have been charged with crimes related to the attack. the fbi says they're still looking for 350 more people they believe committed violence on that day. on capitol hill, a new police chief says reforms to how the capitol police collect and share intelligence and train officers have made the complex safer, but challenges remain. what keeps you up at night now? >> right now probably 200 officers below what we had pre-january 6th and 400 below

certain airports it comes after at&t and verizon declined a request from federal transportation officials to postpone the launch of their 5g signals for up to two weeks. the faa has warned this next generation of cell service could interfere with some vital monitors pilots rely on to safely land planes in bad weather. this morning, the phone companies say they won't fully put their plans on hold, but for the next six months they would agree to fade or decrease 5g signals around some airports it is the same approach phone companies have used overseas, in countries like france. at&t and verizon believe it will give the faa and plane manufacturers time to determine if interference is simply theoretical or indeed real >> they're testing the airplanes about as rapidly as they can all we need to do is give them time to find out which devices are susceptible.

>> reporter: the faa already said it may order pilots to land planes manually, starting this week, when arriving at airports near 5g stations writing in a letter to the phone companies on new year's eve, failure to reach a solution by january 5th will force the u.s. aviation sector to take steps to protect the safety of the traveling public >> you are talking about hundreds of cancellations, and thousands of people whose travel plans are disrupted. >> reporter: more travel disruptions, the last thing those who have been facing major flight cancellations and delays say is needed. now there's hope both sides will answer the call for compromise at&t and verizon spent $70 billion for these frequencies and say they need to turn them on for competitive reasons because t-mobile is on a different frequency and has already started 5g rollouts. airlines say that if these signals are turned on, the delays could cost them billions of dollars

airports, a lot of people right now who are stranded who are waiting for their flights to take off 1800 flight cancellations so far for today and counting nationwide approaching 800 delays the hardest hit airports, reagan airport where we are, dulles airport, laguardia, baltimore, as well as chicago now, the hardest hit airlines at the moment, southwest, canceling 12% of its flights today so far. that's only going to grow. jetblue, 13% sky west, they fly the regional commuter flights, 9% we have also got united about 4%, and alaska 11% so the situation is only growing worse and it is compounded, of course, by covid and people calling out sick because of covid. and that is thinning out airline staffing across the country. situation and the snowstorm and weather across the country, this is not a way that you want to

good morning to you, it is 8:26, i'm kris sanchez. a short time from now king tides will once again reach their peak around parts of the bay area. this is what it looked like at san francisco's embarcadero yesterday. that's water over the sidewalk. it was shared by the port of san francisco. very high water spilling over on to the sidewalks and the walkways there and drawing a lot of people out taking pictures and video. minor flooding is once again likely in low lying areas around the bay today. kari, that extends through 11:00, right? >> yeah, that's when we will see the high tide then gradually it goes down by late morning into the early afternoon.

we're back 8:42 with "today's consumer. this morning, a concern a lot of people have at the start of the new year, debt. >> between gifts and travel, meals, the holiday season can certainly take a toll on your bottom line. so, how can you even start to tackle those bills as they come due? nbc's senior business correspondent stephanie ruhle joins us with a few ideas this morning. hey, steph. >> hi, guys. >> happy new year. what is the first thing that people should do to try to get that debt under control? the first thing? >> first thing, do not beat yourself up. the holidays are over and our debts are here did you overeat during the holidays chances are yes. did you overspend? chances are yes. so the first thing you need to do is know what you owe. call the credit card companies, make a list of all of your

balances and the interest rate you're charged on every card that matters if over the holidays you used some of the new buy now, pay later services, make sure you know the payment schedules, the date you have to pay you can't get cute and pay those late, you'll get hit with big, big fees next, and this is going to be counterintuitive, check your rewards points if you were using credit cards a lot over the holidays, you may have racked up a lot of rewards and you can possibly use those rewards, those points, those cashbacks to start paying those bills. that's good news. >> okay. so we know our debt, let's pretend, we need a plan to pay it down. >> okay. a plan is key. you cannot just say i'm going to ghost my credit card company, i'm going to ignore this, you need a plan. the cheapest plan is known as the avalanche where you look at all your balances and your interest rates and you start paying your bills the highest interest rate first, down to the lowest that's the cheapest, because you want to get rid of those high interest rate bills, nobody

likes paying that. if that's too overwhelming, go with the snowball approach, the lowest bill, the tiniest bill out there, start paying those down first you might say those aren't munch bills, they don't make a difference, they do, because it gets you in the routine of starting to check them off the list, and that motivation, that momentum really helps. and i'm not going to say, just pay your bills on time every month, it is the best way to do it let's get realistic, that's not where you are right now. >> i like that, avalanche and snowball and a payment plan as well anything else folks can do to reduce their bills >> you can pick up the phone, call your credit card companies, and see if you can negotiate they want to have you as a long-term customer, especially if you are a responsible borrower in the past see if you can get that rate lowered, see if you can get a fee waved. i can tell you for sure, there is no way they're going to make an accommodation for you if you don't ask the question you can also look into balance transfers if you get approved

for a new credit card, with a zero interest rate, that could be a very big positive but you need to read the details, the fine print, because some of those are tricky but if you can do it, that is a big positive. >> so what if we're having the spending hangover from 2021 and we're saying 2022 is going to be different, we're not going to do this again what is a good way to get started? >> you can actually plan for it right now. to say, i had no idea this was going to happen, hoda, you did you knew you wanted to buy that sparkle sweater, you wanted to get that extra bottle of champagne. we don't know if we're going to suddenly have our car break down or need a new dishwasher that you can't plan for. you can plan for next holiday season and if you set up a separate account now, a transfer of your paycheck, once a month, just once a month, 25 bucks a month, you'll have $300 by next christmas and $300 at the liquor store around christmas, that goes quickly >> oh, yes it does. >> thanks, steph >> stephanie, thank you. >> thank you, guys. for more ideas, for more tips, go to our website,

we're back with "today food." joining us today, melissa ben-ishay. >> the baker behind baked by melissa. sometimes i'll walk by and i'm, like, oh, sheinelle, it is so good this company connoisseur is going viral, not for her sweets, but her salad-making skills and she joins us now to show us a little something something melissa, good morning. >> good morning!

how are you guys >> doing great. >> i got to tell you, those cupcakes are like a food group at our house when i heard you were going to be doing some salads, i was, like, what are we going to have a salads by melissa coming up? >> i mean, who knows i'm just sharing what i love most with our followers, which is cupcakes, dessert and salads. >> tell us about this green goddess salad that has apparently racked up a few million views on tiktok. >> yeah, so, just like cupcakes, i love to cook too i've been making salads for years -- like my whole life. like similar to baking we have been creating all this tiktok content for "baked by melissa" and i cook every day. i'm, like, i'm going to film this salad it went viral. i kept doing it. and it is such a simple salad. it is a very fine chop and i think that similar to baked by melissa, it gives you the perfect bite, and consistency every time you scoop it with a chip and i think that's part of what makes it so --

>> you scoop it with a chip? >> i scoop it with a chip. >> what's the base here? >> show us how to do it here. >> okay. so the base is green cabbage guess. what you do is there is a very specific way to get it really fine i am not, like, a chef, by any means. you just cut off a chunk of the side, so you can go like this and then you just go you keep the tip of the knife on the cutting board. don't pick it up and just keep making, yes, exactly, these fine slices >> okay. >> and then usually they stay together and what you're going to do then is just turn them around and do the same thing which allows you to make it really fine and a sharp knife is key. if you are new to the kitchen and you aren't comfortable, go slow i enjoy the process, and i think that is why this salad exists because i enjoy chopping and the more you do it, the better you get, and you can go

slow and not cut yourself because sharp knives are dangerous. >> what else goes into this, melissa? >> so you have your cabbage, i'll get it off to the side. i like mini cucumbers. you can use any type of cucumber it gives you more of the, like, flesh of the cucumber and not as much seed and, again, you do the same thing, you just slice, what, like strips, i don't know the right terminology. >> but everything is small. >> everything is small >> julienned. >> yes, or a fine dice, i think. you want little tiny squares so and you go like this, again and then you throw it in really i love vegetables so much so i just use all the green vegetables i had on hand when i was making these salads. green onions are my onion of choice and green is my favorite color so when i first made this salad, i'm, like, i'm going to put everything green that i have in this salad >> what is the dressing? >> the dressing is going to be the key. we need to know. >> we like dressing. >> let's do the dressing super quick. here we go

i have it right here for you the dressing is -- it has to be here we go.ously i have it right it is inspired by pesto, but i believe every ingredient should be nourishing. especially in a salad. so it is two lemons, the juice, and it is a quarter cup of olive oil. and you want to -- when you're using blender, you always want to put your liquids in first, otherwise it won't blend and it is super annoying. two tablespoons of rice vinegar. rice vinegar is my vinegar of choice, i think it is very mild. i have one small shallot, two cloves of garlic, i have a cup

of basil and when i created the recipe, i didn't want it to be super overpowering with basil because basil can be very, like, peppery, and strong. so i decided to cut it with a cup of fresh spinach leaves and that also helps make it super green. and bright because people eat with their eyes, just as much as they do with their taste buds. if you have leftover chives from the recipe, you can throw them in or the green onion tops from chopping those, doesn't matter i love nutritional yeast my husband was vegan for a period of time so i got to know it. and love it. and it is vitamin b, and protein, and so many great nutrients. and then i do a quarter of a cup of cashews and walnuts, those are my two favorite nuts you can do any nut you have on hand if you have a nut allergy, you can use pumpkin speeds >> super food. >> it adds to the creaminess and then a teaspoon of himalayan salt which the pink salt also is

higher in nutrients then the white stuff. >> grind that up, that's it? >> and you -- you are going to want to drink it and then you can -- and because it is all great ingredients, you can use a lot of it. and it becomes like -- it becomes almost like a slaw, like it is -- it is heavy on the dressing, and this recipe is so super forgiving, because you can just -- if you don't have an ingredient, grab another one people ask about, can i use another lettuce? absolutely what is the point of nutritional yeast? i can't find it in my supermarket. so don't use it. it is really fine. you can also leave the nuts out. it is really not necessary >> and what chip, what is your favorite chip to do the dipping? >> my favorite chip to do the dipping is zack's mighty, they're crunchier, they're thick and when i use -- before i had
