thank you for joining us. i am laura garcia. >> i am kris sanchez. mostly dry in the south bay, kari. you are tracking light rain in other places, though? >> yes, we are seeing some of the light showers moving through. we have seen it on storm ranger. it has mainly been focused on parts of the north bay and the peninsula and now we are seeing showers move into the oakland area. as we get a closer look we can see the rain coming down, and once again a steady light rain and making the commute a little slower in some of the spots so you should slow down on your way to work. also seeing some of the rain around the san mateo area, the santa cruz mountains getting in on showers and a wider view shows we are going to see more of the wet weather rolling in and we are seeing a lot more moisture moving in, and overall the storm system is weak and it will continue to bring us scattered showers in some parts of the bay area throughout the morning and early afternoon. we won't be done with the rain, so we will talk about more about

what is in the forecast in a few minutes. mike, what is it looking like for early commuters? >> a light drive. yesterday we did not seat metering lights and light rain, and kari is talk about that light rain and it will be a factor for many drivers as we look at your map. we had a little flooding reported at 980 and 880, and so watch that portion of oakland. the rest of the bay moving smoothly. of course, the san mateo bridge itself, and for right now we will just track this. it's 4:32 right now. happening today, california's department of public health is expected to give an update on the state's reported number of covid cases. >> yeah, california added 56,000 new cases, and our positivity

rate jumping to 15.9, a nearly 10% increase. before the new year we were averaging close to 16,000 cases a day. and because of that increase in cases testing demand is also on the rise. >> and for those heading back to school or work, getting a test is a challenge and most home testing kits are sold out. on the left, hundreds in foster city, and on the right, that line took hours. >> today in the bay's jean elle has more on when you should take one. >> lining outside in the rain in foster city, and waiting on long lines at a drive-through test site, and uc berkeley infectious

disease expert says labs are struggling to keep up delaying some test results. >> right now when we most need these tests they are the least available and taking too long to come back. it's very first rating. >> it's complicated the return to school, work and routine get togethers. the doctor says the tests can help you make safer decisions. >> the rapid test would be good for just before you go over there, and though it may miss that you are infected -- >> the test is recommended three to five days after traveling, even if you feel well. >> stanford doctor says while

hospitalizations are not rising as fast as the number of omicron cases, they are increasing. >> in the last week or so we've seen twice as many hospitalizations and cases as we have since the beginning of december. >> san francisco, santa clara and contra costa show hospitalizations doubled in each county since christmas, which was just ten days ago. we are not at the level we saw previous covid spikes last winter and last summer. jean elle for "today in the bay." marking the rise and fall of the silicon superstar, elizabeth holmes. seven days of deliberations, and the jury convicted holmes. she was found guilty on four charges, one for conspiracy against investors, and one for wire fraud and one for wide

fraud on theranos investors. they were deadlocked for the remaining three. today, scott budman has more on what is next. >> reporter: a dramatic picture as elizabeth holmes and her family walked past cameras and gauntlet, and her head down not commenting at all after getting what had to be pretty bad news for her. there were four counts she was found not guilty on and four counts she was guilty on and three counts they could not decide on. prosecuting attorneys had this to say about the outcome. >> the guilty verdicts in this

case shows holmes' culpability. >> now i want to take you back in the courtroom where elizabeth holmes sat still and stared silently for most of the time when we heard the charges read back, and four found guilty and four not guilty and three deadlocked. holmes was able to turn around and hug individual members of her family before she and they were escorted out of the courtroom as was each member of the jury. the jurors were thanked by the judge for their service, and then they left the courtroom. as for sentencing, we hear it will happen sometime in the next two months. to wrap it up again, four counts where elizabeth holmes was found guilty, and four where she was found not guilty. i am scott budman, nbc bay area

tkpwp tuesday morning. right now at 4:42, it's 53 degrees in concord. this is warmer than some of the high temperatures we had over the weekend. it's feeling milder and we have clouds and light rain. as we go through today we will keep the clouds and a chance of showers. we will talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. so the slick roads definitely an issue for some folks. let's take a live look outside. san mateo bridge, as promised, there's the live look and we see

we have at speed limits. no problems getting there. rain in the north bay and minor flooding in spots like 980 and 880 in oakland. we have a little slowing out of the altamont, a little more than yesterday but we will watch the volume. it's still manageable. there's a crash, 101 at story, and it's drier down there. kari, we had kind of a scattered and mixed this morning? >> yeah, the south bay really has not seen much of anything, but we are still getting rain in parts of the north bay, the peninsula and the east bay as we track it on stormranger. we can see the showers that moved through the richmond area approaching concord, and also moving through fairfield and hayward we are dealing with some of the light showers. also in san francisco and moving down to san mateo as well as

burlingame, and some other areas up and down the peninsula dealing with those showers as you are heading out on this tuesday morning. we are seeing some of the scattered showers that will continue. we will see some more rain, but take a look at the rainfall totals. we had in mount tam nearly four inches of rain in the past 24 hours. looking at scott skraebg in the santa cruz mountains, two inches of rain there, and we are approaching half an inch in san francisco and walnut creek, just a little lower, but san josé has not measured much of anything and seeing the same in the tri-valley. we will have mainly light rain and it will be on and off for some of the spots, and looking ahead we are going to see some additional rainfall over the next couple of days. we're only looking at about another few hundreds of an inch of rain in the tri-valley.

as far as the sierra snowpack, it has been so great to see this big boost we have gotten. statewide we are at 147% of normal. we are still looking good here. we will also see some light snow showers if the forecast over the next few days, and about up to a foot in kingville. 7-day forecast, off and on showers through the end of the week and it will clear out in time for the weekend. we will be slightly cooler once that system passes. we will see highs in the upper 50s. now as we turn to our climate in crisis, we will highlight the colorado wildfires and how climate change has played a role in that. in boulder county, colorado, over the holiday, a massive wildfire ripped through more than 1,000 structures and two people are reported still missing. this is coming as scientists are seeing more evidence that wildfires no longer have a
