while we are still getting light showers in parts of the north bay from napa and solano counties and down to san francisco and parts of contra costa county this morning waking up to showers. as we get a closer look at concord right now, between concord, richmond and oakland, we are seeing light showers moving through, and showers continuing in san francisco and up and down peninsula where we are seeing light rain moving through, and we will also continue to see some of the rain moving through throughout the morning as well as a chance for this afternoon. we're not done with this wet weather yet. we are going to see more as we go throughout the week. the good news is it's beneficial rain and not causing any problems. we will continue to monitor that and another look at the forecast, coming up in a few minutes. today president biden meets with his response team as the omicron variant wreaks havoc across the country.

>> we have live team coverage. first, today in the bay's alice barr is in washington with the push to rollout more booster shots. >> yeah, president biden expected to speak today about boosters, and he will get an update about the federal workers that have been sent on it to hospitals to help shore them up with low staffing and building out capacity at hospitals as they are seeing a wave of covid cases increase across the country. just yesterday the u.s. hit 56 million covid cases after having surpassed 55 million, just a day before. that shows you how quickly the infection numbers are spreading and that's forcing up the number of hospitalizations. with mounting evidence that omicron infections are less severe than delta infections,
5:03 am
medical experts are hoping for a silver lining. >> there are future variants that will impact us less because we have so much immunity in our population. >> we're also seeing record numbers of children hospitalized with covid, and it's unclear if severe cases among kids are on the rise or if that's just a product of the shear number of infections out there. at least some of the cases are among children who are being treated for other conditions, but then also end up testing positive for the virus. more protection could be on the way for kids by the end of this week, the cdc is expected to sign off on the fda's authorization of pfizer booster shots for kids age 12 to 15 five months after their second dose. the fda also authorizing third doses for certain kids between the ages of five and 11 with

compromised immune systems. the cdc expected to sign off on that tomorrow. that agency may also update its guidance for that shortened isolation period for those that test positive, going from ten days down to five. there has been pushback about that and we could get more clarification about whether you should test again at the end of the five-day recommended period. >> parents looking forward to the booster guideline, and we know once the cdc has done it then the fda and then it will still be a day or so before folks can sign up for those appointments. thank you so much, alice. and then we continue our team coverage this morning, and here's some of the new guidelines they are working out

there. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: yes, marin schools will shorten the quarantine timeline to match cdc guidelines. it will drop the number of quarantine days from 10 to 5 days for anybody that tests positive for covid or exposed to somebody who test positive, and after five days the person in quarantine will take another test and if that's possible the person will have to quarantine for five more days. meantime bay area school districts are trying to make it easier for students to get tested, but keep in mind it's not mandatory. employees were handing out at-home tests and also free pcr testing on site. and the orinda school district invited families to pick up tests at sites, and it was a similar scene at walnut creek unified school district. >> we pulled up and they said
5:06 am
how many do you need, and we have four kids and so they gave us four. it was really easy. >> reporter: some districts sent students home with test kits before the holiday break, and it will be a few days before we know how many positive tests they are seeing, and some school districts across the state say they have not received at-home test kits from the state and they are back in school already. >> thank you so much, sharon. new this morning the west contra costa school district opened three new covid testing sites for students returning today, and that will include testing for staff as well. the clinics offer weekly testing for families that need it. schools there recently handed out some 15,000 testing kits donated by the county, but there's a surplus and all leftover kits are being handed out at the school sites. a man and woman were shot
