place in california, you have to wear one. >> we have more cancellations now. people are fed up, they're just tired of it. there's no way in the gym business that people could actually feel comfortable working out. >> reporter: when will the mask mandate end? when the omicron recedes, it should become a mask recommendation. >> the virus is endemic. it's just going to be with us. >> it will all depend on what the case numbers are. >> reporter: when the omicron fuelled hospitalization numbers come down,s we can pull back on some mitigation measures, but masking should not be one of them. >> i think indoor masking is probably one of the least costly

measures so that might be one of the later ones to go. these respirators are meant to filter out 95% of particles. omicron is far more transmissible than previous strains. >> i think this is going to put it behind us and let us live with the virus in an endemic state. >> that would be a good thing because we're seeing so many things change. some schools in the east bay have temporarily hit down. hundreds of kids are being shifted back to virtual learning for the time being. the school district superintendent made the decision after ten of the school's students in several grades tested positive for covid monday.

today, princess cruise ship will dock in san francisco and with what could be a covid outbreak. passengers tell us the crew won't tell them how many cases are actively on board. a mountain view couple says they will be isolating in their room after learning the ship's entertainers were the ones quarantining because of a covid outbreak. he also says the crew has not

followed covid precautions and called the cdc and the state to try to warn them. >> he was able to take the report and give me a traffic number. >> now it is still unclear what will happen as passengers disembark in san francisco today. we reached out to princess cruises and the san francisco public health department and have not heard back. today marks one year since the siege on the u.s. capitol. >> here's a live look at that building where president biden will address the nation as part of the events commemorating today's one-year anniversary. capitol police are bracing for any potential threat. >> it comes as a congressional probe into the attack builds steam.

in interest rates could come as early as march. the dow dropping nearly 400 points, the s&p shedding 2% and the nasdaq losing 3%, its worst day in nearly a year. reports on unemployment, the services sector and factory orders as well. walmart is cutting paid leave for workers who tested positive for covid according to a memo seen by reuters. they will get one week of pay instead of two in a policy that's in line with the cdc's changes from quarantine guidance from ten days to five days. walmart says workers who continue to be sick can potentially receive pay for an additional 26 or so weeks. instagram has started testing new feed options including the chronological feed many users have been asking for

welcome back. good thursday morning to you. taking a live look outside, this time overlooking san jose. see some cloud cover there. let's check in with kari with a look at the forecast as we inch closer to the weekend. >> we're almost there. we're going to get some sunshine for the weekend, but we have to get through the rain first. that's heading back into the bay area by tomorrow. right now storm ranger is giving us a clean sweep showing it's all dry but we've also seen the dense fog drifting around parts of the east bay as well as the north bay. rain is still well to the north of us, but the low off the coast is going to kick all this through the bay area. then we'll go back to drier weather by the weekend. today, temperatures reach into the upper 50s, reaching 58 until oakland, 57 in sonoma and a high of about 58 degrees in fremont,

61 in south san jose. when we compare that to what the rest of the country is feeling right now, take a look at this. that's 19 degrees below zero. they have some bitterly cold area pushing across half of the country right now. if you will be traveling for the weekend, make sure you plan ahead. taking a look at our forecast hour by hour, just a couple of sprinkles possible today. tomorrow is when the rain really comes back. we'll start out tomorrow morning seeing the rain in the north bay, moving to san francisco and moving into the rest of the bay area by early tomorrow afternoon. i do think by the evening commute, all of this will really start to clear out and we'll see some dry weather going into the weekend with the possibility of us getting about a tenth to a quarter inch of rain. this is looking very light for us and just enough to water the lawn before some dry weather comes in. the sierra has about 2-6 inches

shows you a smooth drive throughout the east bay. while klay thompson's return to the court this sunday is not a certainty, one thing is certain at this point. if you don't have tickets yet, you're going to pay a lot to buy some. tickets are going as high as $15,000 in the resale market. last night in dallas, the warriors never really got orn track against the mavs. gary payton jr. did have a nice dunk in the third quarter. tim hardaway jr. led dallas to the win. the nfl is questioning if the super bowl should be in los angeles. today ahead, the backup plan the league is creating now that we're a month away from the big game. and lake or vil is finally generating power again.

another big event up in the air because of covid, it is the super bowl. it's planned for next month in l.a., but the nfl already has a backup plan. california's top health official says he's confident the game will remain in l.a. if we can incorporate strict covid guidelines for all fans. that includes wearing masks.

however, the nfl is reportedly discussing a backup location just in case california shuts down major gatherings. the league would possibly move the super bowl to texas a t the home of the cowboys, at&t stadium. you can watch it right here on nbc bay area february 13th. we're counting down the days until the winter games. the olympics are in less than a month. the best skiers and snowboarders in the country will be competing for a spot on team usa on mammoth mountain. >> last spring i came up with a plan and i thought i executed it pretty well this summer. so i'm excited to see what happens. >> this experience from then and the focus has shifted, right? you've got a different mindset, it sounds like, going into this
