5:00 am
on your tv, but if you are watching roku, amazon fire, apple tv, online, we're there, too. i am kris sanchez in for marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. first we are checking in with vianey, and she's in for kari this morning tracking that weekend forecast. looks pretty good. >> yeah, it does. look who is back, binxie is back taking a nap on the couch. right now i have satellite radar, because you can see the line right there to the pacific northwest, and a little further up north. this could bring the potential of seeing showers, and first i want to talk about the fog and visibility. morgan hill, down to about five miles. half moon bay, six miles. santa rosa down to about five
5:01 am
miles. take a look at the timing of the hour-by-hour outlook, we will see a little rain moving into santa rosa, ukiah and clearlake, and several reports of drizzle as well. then by about 8:00, 9:00, it will start to move in to parts of san francisco as well, so mainly areas south of the golden gate bridge. we will talk about that in full detail coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much, vianey. oakland schools now could be facing possible disruptions today with the possible sickout planned by teachers. classes will remain open but teachers are trying to draw attention to the elevated covid risk in the classroom. sierra, as a parent i would be concerned not knowing whether or not there was enough staff to keep my kid safe at school? >> reporter: yeah, good morning. a very valid concern. we will get to this situation here in san francisco in just a
5:02 am
minute, but, yes, you were discussing oakland. a lot of parents having that same thought, will there be enough teachers to safely instruct their students. the district right now calling that sickout illegal in terms of union terms. nbc bay area got the e-mail from oakland unified school district last night, an e-mail that was sent to the parents and in it a district warned a teacher sickout could significantly interrupt instruction, and the district called it illegal, and they said kids could end up in a situation less safe if teachers don't show up right now, and it's unknown how many teachers will take part in the sickout in oakland, and parents we spoke with said they are concerned about their child's safety. >> if there's one staff member being asked to watch 90 kids because that's what is the reality in the moment, i would
5:03 am
make the choice, most likely, to pull my kids out of school. >> so what are teachers saying? we asked the teachers' union for its take, and it released a statement saying in part this is not an official union action, but we are asking leaders to urgent to the demand for better masks and more testing. here in san francisco, fsusd saw a similar sickout from some of its teachers, and on thursday the largest district had 616 teachers call-out, and many were doing it as a lack of covid safe fee on campus. on a typical day, there are about 250 to 300 teachers calling out within district wide sfusd, so yesterday's numbers were a little more than double of what the district would typically see. we will continue to follow what is happening here in san francisco as well as the sickout there in oakland.
5:04 am
we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> on any given day, we know it's hard to find a sub for certain classes anyway, so this could be a difficult situation. parents, we understand where the teachers are coming from, too. contra costa campuses are temporarily closing after positive covid cases were reported there. a brief return to remote learning for about 28,000 students across the east bay district. all schools were closed for today and monday for deep cleaning, and classes will return on tuesday. some believe the omicron variant could be more difficult to detect. doctors say the instant anybody has symptoms they could consider themselves infected and isolate immediately. the virus may be concentrating more in the back of the throat instead of the nose, so some
5:05 am
people are adjusting how they are collecting a test sample. >> some people have antidotes of testing negative with the nasal swabs and positive with a oral, so a swab of the back of your throat and submitting that. >> a pcr test is far more accurate in detecting an infection shortly after potential exposure, however doctors do not recommend you get a pcr test after five days or more. an antigen test may work better. a covid variant is catching where the world health organization said the variant was discovered in france at the same time as omicron, but there are only a dozen or so confirmed
5:06 am
instructions. on average there's a variant every two weeks but rarely escalate to a variant of concern. >> we saw this before with nu and even the california variant, and they stuck around regionally and never went anywhere. >> our website aims to answer your frequently asked questions as coronavirus cases continue to surge. go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the tab in the trending bar. now to a follow-up in the search for a service dog stolen in san francisco. summer is back once again with her owner. yesterday oakland animal services reached out to the pd and told them they had the dog but there is no word on how it got there. the dog was snatched on monday
5:07 am
just before 5:00 p.m., and no arrests have been made. to build the dam, the costs has nearly doubled and the price tag now stands at nearly $1 million. the santa clara valley water district said the water rate hikes will pay for additional costs. it may take ten years to complete. well, when they do complete it we will want it filled up with water, and we will see what is in sight for this weekend. i think we are going to have a little rain today, maybe? does it depend on where you are in the bay, vianey? >> yeah, just a little. not enough to wash out the day, a couple hundredths of an inch and more for the north bay. fairfield, 49 degrees right now, and by about 9:00 a.m. we will
5:08 am
see a little bit of the rain start to move in. here's a closer look for some of the timing for this. at about 7:30, notice the spots on the maps up here, and you see it's scattered overall. the rain chance starts to clear out after the midday. by about 12:30, parts of hayward and san josé could get a little shower activity as well into the afternoon. i'll talk more about your weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes, but first let's check in with mike. >> all right, hey, vianey. we have been looking at light traffic all week, and only on wednesday did we have a backup at the toll plaza for any of the morning show. and it's an easy drive in the south county, and we'll move you over to the east bay. the good news is, we have seen the reopening, and the canyon reopened right on schedule.
5:09 am
where it says castro valley, that yellow highlighting, there's a chance there for fog, and a smooth drive throughout those areas, including vasco. a longer drive out of antioch, no delays and a lot less fog than we have seen in the last couple of days. >> that's good news. thank you, mike. and then next on "today in the bay," the latest featured twitter is rolling out for users. plus, it's time to fly but how about in a brand-new car? the car of the future making a smash. we'll's be right back.

comcast business. powering possibilities.
5:12 am
good morning. it's about 50 degrees right now in walnut creek. we are seeing a chance of some shower activity today for parts of the bay area. i'll talk more about that overall mild day ahead. a full forecast, coming up. yeah, we are seeing fog, moisture in the air, and chp has a couple call-outs and we will take a look at that, and you see low clouds that could be a factor for some drivers. on the san francisco side, there could be an incident and that
5:13 am
could be an issue for the bay bridge commute. now let's check in with dom. >> good morning. no whammy. your weather is better than ours here in new york, anyway. wall street is set for a flat open ahead of the big report of the day, the jobs report for december. it's expected to show the u.s. economy added 422,000 jobs last month with the unemployment rate ticking down to 4.1%. the survey used for that report was taken before covid cases tied to omicron started to surge in mid to late december, which disrupted everything from hotels to airlines, businesses and schools. if the numbers do hold it would mean 6.5 million jobs were created last year, and that would be the biggest increase in jobs since franklin roosevelt was president in 1939. twitter is testing a new feature
5:14 am
called tweet takes, that can allow users to share a reaction along a, quote, tweet. you can send a reaction rather than a retweet. it's similar to tiktok's reaction videos that often have a comment or another user's clip as a possible source. and for all the soda/drink, the new alcohol version called fresca mixed. so-called adult beverages, guys, like this, or ready to drink cocktails are an $8 billion industry. i would try it, because i am a fan of fresca and maybe i will see what the hard version is like. >> they came late to the game.
5:15 am
>> does that mean i'm old? >> no. >> that's my favorite drink? >> shall i ask? >> yeah, what is it? it's 5:00 somewhere, but it's 5:15 right now, a little too early. you may wonder why we don't have the flying cars if you watched the "jetsons," and that could change. at ces, a company is sharing its version of a flying car. it can travel on the road and in the air. it lifts off vertically at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. the price tag to order one is roughly $750,000. >> from the bay area to tahoe, only one hour in this vehicle. what we predict in the future is
5:16 am
people will have a small electric car to do everything from 1 to 30 miles, but more than 30 miles you will use the drive and fly. >> the current models seats four people and about the size of a suv. >> what happens if there are chained required? >> you get in the air and make sure it's clear up there. one mystery word and six guesses to figure it out. you may have played a game wordle. it's now played by thousands of players trying to guess the daily puzzle. coming up, how it works and how you can get in on the fun of the new craze, more will be on the "today" show after "today in the bay." you will love this if you love taco bell.
5:17 am
the restaurant chain with the pass subscription nationwide, and it's 30 days of tacos for $30. you get the choice of seven collect tacos, including crunchy, soft, doritos locos tacos. team, any takers on that one? >> i don't know. >> one. >> the kids. >> if it's on your route, it would be worth it but if you have to drive out of your way, that could be difficult. >> it would have been more helpful in my college years, because that was a nice nightcap, but i don't know about now. well, let's take a look at the weather, and now you have to worry about sodium and things like that.
5:18 am
let's look at walnut creek. current temperature, 30 degrees and now we are looking at a system on satellite radar just off to the north. this is going to bring us a chance of rain into the bay area. how much rain? before we get to that, for the most part we are doing okay when it comes to visibility, not as bad as what we have seen, but some spots down if santa rosa, and tracy down to about 2 1/2 miles visibility. if we see rain, who will see it and how much? santa rosa, ukiah, already getting reports of drizzle through there. 8:00 or 9:00, we will see that move into the city of san francisco, half moon bay. by about noon, parts of the south bay. notice it's not widespread or a ton of rain, and once the midday hits, we see that clear out and then we will get clearing in the skies as well from the clouds. as far as how much rain, again, not a huge rain maker.
5:19 am
a couple 100ths of an inch in this system. once we see the south bay showers ending this evening, temperatures will be in the upper 50s, 58 degrees in san josé, and 57 in hayward and 56 in san francisco. just a look at your extended forecast. by saturday, we won't be worried about the rain. if you are headed to lake tahoe, there's a wind advisory in effect so keep that in mind. on sunday night we will see showers offshore and that could mean light rain chances moving in towards the middle of the week. we get another chance of possibly seeing another system move in on thursday, january 13th into friday. let's look at your 7-day forecast, breezy winds, rain early. notice by saturday and sunday we keep the morning fog and afternoon clouds. monday, showers to the south and then we start to warm up just a bit, so we will be in the 50s in
5:20 am
san francisco this weekend. notice by next tuesday and wednesday, we will be in the upper 50s, a couple of low 60s. that will be a nice weekend ahead. now let's see how the roads are doing with mike. >> vianey, we have a smooth easy drive on the speed sensors. we will show you the map overall. you see the green all over the place. no major concerns there, for the altamont pass, even though chp called that out for fog for 580, we had no problems over there. the issue here on chp's report is a crash at the bottom of the off-ramp westbound 80, the bay bridge coming into the city at fremont, the first exit. that is a concern but things have not been a big deal the last few minutes. let's check the bay bridge toll plaza. there's in backup or metering lights. the crash in san francisco should clear quickly and if it doesn't they could turn the metering lights on. we will see. and then here we are just start fog see a few more cars, and no
5:21 am
incidents as slowing on the span, but something was reported on the shoulder and we don't see it in this camera shot but i will still track, of course, all the bridges. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> two viewers' moving companies dropped the ball and at least one box. i am consumer reporter, chris chmura. "nbc bay area responds," next. mike posted on instagram where his daughter had to bring home an at-home test per the school's request for rapid tests, and boy, has times changed. not the kind of tests we were used to. keep up with mike on instagram, twitter and facebook. you're watching "today in the bay."
5:22 am
5:23 am
5:24 am
at nbc bay area we like to say we are moving you forward. we cannot say the same for some moving companies, though. >> many moves go sideways, backwards or nowhere. and consumer reporter, chris chmura, has a few complaints where his team did some heavy lifting. >> we get complaints about lousy movers every month. here are two new ones. alice paid 1,100 up front to move her stuff from ohio to san francisco, and she expected to
5:25 am
get her deposit back because she canceled and that did not happen until she called us. the movers sent a full refund of $1,161. james said he moved to oakland to san mateo, and he said the moving company broke a exercising bike, and they did not pay for compensation until they talked to us. the california bureau of household goods and services fakes complaints about moves, but only moves within the state. this qr code will load the complaint form. you can also enlist us to get your complaint moving forward. go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the responds option from the main menu or call us at 888-996-tips. have a great weekend. >> thank you so much.
5:26 am
for the niners, a win over the rams gets them in the playoffs no matter what else happens, and the l.a. chargers in a similar situation, but in this case whoever wins will reach a playoff spot and the loser goes home. >> what an exciting time. for the last game of the season to mean so much for our city and organization, it's exciting. >> it sure is. the raiders playing their best football when it matters most at the end of the season, and they now have won their last three games. can you watch the most important raiders game in the last five years, and it will be right here on nbc bay area. kris sanchez, you are going to make chili. >> yes. the new effort to cast that
5:27 am
suspect that killed a connecticut in training with the alameda sheriff's office. the growing reward for any information leading to an arrest. the cdc facing criticism for shortened quarantine messaging. we will show you what the director is saying about testing and ending isolation. that's all coming up in a live report.
5:28 am
5:29 am
right now at 5:30, claire -- clarifying the guidance.
5:30 am
when you contract covid-19, the cdc is now speaking out to ease concerns for the public as cases rise. a live report of what she is saying this morning. being stretched thin. hospitalizations are skyrocketing here in the bay area and across the nation. we will show you how health leaders are now scrambling to treat more covid patients. plus -- >> you thought you live in one of the best neighborhoods in town, and all of a sudden it doesn't feel safe anymore. >> a san francisco neighborhood shaken by a robbery caught on camera. the nerve-wracking moments for one neighbor as he tries to follow the thieves. this is "today in the bay." we not only traditionally broadcast to your television, but you can watch us live on roku, apple, fire and online. i am laura garcia. >> i am kris sanchez in for
5:31 am
marcus washington who has the day off. we start off with vianey arana. there are goals for people to get outside more. >> yeah, that's a goal for myself as well. we are going to be seeing an over all nice day today but we have to get through the shower activity first. take a live look at san josé. it's 52 degrees, so a mild start and not necessarily too cold. this system is forming pretty interestingly. it looks powerful but it's to the pacific northwest, it's more of a cloud cover type of system. not a lot of precipitation out of this. i do want to show you fog and visibility right now. we are seeing limited visibility mainly through santa rosa down to about five miles, and also in parts of tracie and morgan hill. look at oakland, six miles visibility. we will look at daytime highs
5:32 am
coming up in a few minutes. the supreme court hearing arguments about two vaccine mandates put forth by the biden administration. one is for private employers and the other for most health care workers. legal challenges to the policies are being brought by several states and business groups. as the supreme court prepares to hear today's cases, it's worth noting that 208 million americans are fully vaccinated, that's about 62% of the u.s. population, and more than one-third of the country, including all nine of the supreme court justices have received a booster shot as well. more covid booster shots may be in the horizon. the new injections may be needed in the fall and moving forward. he made the statement at a health care conference, and he
5:33 am
believes most people will contract the omicron variant, and it will stay with us long term much like the flu. the director of the cdc is on the defensive today after receiving questions about the testing and isolation. a lot has to do with the change from isolating from ten days down to five as long as you are asymptomatic. and thom jensen is live in walnut creek, and there are a lot of questions looming about when is the right time to get tested? >> reporter: there is, and the cdc director did give some guidance and there's guidance on the cdc website. the big question that a lot of people had after that five days, the shortened period, is there a requirement or recommendation to get tested? you may remember in the last few days, dr. anthony fauci came out
5:34 am
saying people should be getting tested, and the cdc director was on the "today" show this morning, dr. rochelle lewinsky, and she did not give that recommendation. the cdc has guidelines. first of all, it says to make sure the person who is not going to isolate anymore after just the five days is free of symptoms for at least 24 hours and free of a fever, especially without medication for a day. continue to wear a well-fitted face covering for the full ten days, even if you are at home around other people. avoid people who are immunocompromised or a risk for severe disease, and after you leave isolation, don't go to restaurants or places where masks will come off after the first ten days after symptoms,
5:35 am
and she had to say. >> we have heard people interested in getting a test and doing a test and have access to a test and want to know how to interpret it, and when we updated our recommendations this week we provided guidance how you interpret that test if you so choose to take that step at the end of your isolation. >> reporter: the cdc recommends also testing or isolating if you have been in contact with somebody who is infected and to test on day five of your quarantine, and making a recommendation on the website. the doctor did not make that this morning. they recommend the antigen test for ending isolation, not the tcr because they could be more accurate in showing whether the virus is active and contagious in individuals, and the interesting thing on the "today" show coming from dr. lewinsky, she did not give a recommendation, just saying if you feel like you should get tested after that shorter
5:36 am
isolation period, then by all means go ahead and do so but no recommendations this morning. live from walnut creek, thom jensen for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, thom. bay area hospitals are among those struggling amidst the omicron surge. 8,000 people are hospitalized with covid across the state and that's a nearly 60% increase from before. the state positivity rate of those taking tests right now, more than 20%. and sam brock has more on the overwhelming situation still developing. >> kris, good morning. from florida, of course, where we just reported 67,000 cases of covid just yesterday, about a 5% increase in the last couple of weeks. in the united states it took six months to get to the first 4 million cases of covid, and it
5:37 am
took just several days to get 4 million. i am in miami-dade. about 150,000 cases nationally, and we know the demand is the story and so is the deletion. all that is coming up on "today." back to you. >> thank you. if you are having a hard time finding a testing site, we can help you there, go to nbcbayarea.com/covidtesting. we put together a list of places where you can go and get tested in the bay area, and it's divided county by county. a $10,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest.
5:38 am
28-year-old david nguyen was a cadet for the alameda sheriff's office. nguyen was due to graduate next month. the deputy sheriff's association announced the $10,000 reward for any lead that can help catch the shooter. san francisco police are searching for two men caught on camera shooting at a man trying to stop a robbery. this happened on wednesday morning in golden gate heights near the inner sunset. when the homeowner went outside to yell at the thieves, the thieves ran to a nearby parked car and one fired a shot before the driver took off. nobody was hurt. police did recover a shell casing. officers did collect a lot of video evidence in that case. >> what a difference a month makes. take a look at the satellite pictures from the uc berkeley
5:39 am
sierra snow lab. the one on the left taken in december before the storms dumped 214 inches of snow in the tahoe region, and the one taken on the right on new year's day. over that time the sierra picked up 214 inches, making it the region's snowiest december since at least 1970. now the trick is just getting up there to enjoy it. maybe we will have a window of opportunity, but i don't know about today, vianey? >> yeah, definitely not today. there's a lake wind there's a possibility of seeing more winds could make for treacherous conditions, the roads are narrow, and just avoid it for today. maybe we will have a better window in the weekend. we will have a couple chances of
5:40 am
light rain head into the early morning hours. by 7:00, the north bay already with a little drizzle, and 8:009:00, move into the san francisco area, and then about 11:00 or 12:00, there could be shower activity, so not a huge rain maker out of this system. once we see this system move out it's going to get a little breezy, and about 57 in some bay areas. mild temperatures remaining in the upper 50s. by next monday we see a boost in our temperatures and also the possibility of shower activity to our south. if you are going to be heading into the city, also expect to see a chance of some rain for the first half of today, and by the weekend you will be good to go. patchy fog in the morning, and that's probably going to be our biggest concern for our morning commute. mike, how does the commute now look? >> looking great. we did have two bridges with
5:41 am
concerns. we will talk about that. as we look at the richmond toll plaza, we see more cars slowing getting to the toll plaza. as we look at the map, we had a crash just past the toll plaza, and i believe they cleared that from the roadway. we will double-check with chp. at the bottom of the screen we have the bay bridge getting into san francisco at fremont street, and that crash cleared with no backup there. the rest of the east bay looks good, and no slowing in that section of san josé. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the post travel holiday continuing, and next on "today in the bay," the latest problem now leaving thousands of passengers delayed. we're less than a month away from the winter games. two bay area figure skaters are
5:42 am
competing to be on team usa. when the final team will be decided and how they are both gearing up for the games. first, don't forget about our "synced in" show, and we break down where you can book a covid test right now and explains how to choose the best face mask. our handle is @nbcbayarea. we'll be right back.
5:43 am
5:44 am
5:45 am
good friday morning. it's about 52 degrees. we are starting out fairly mild and over all dry, but we have a couple showers expected this afternoon in the early morning. i will take you through the timing and a look ahead for your weekend forecast in just a few minutes. no real slowing, although we got a note from ac transit, and they could get some delays because of the impact with covid and drivers. you can see low clouds and haze in the air. we'll talk about that coming up. breaking news just into our news room, the latest monthly employment report is out. last month the economy added nearly 200,000 jobs, but the numbers came in well below forecast. the unemployment rate for
5:46 am
unemployment is 3.9%, the lowest since the start of the pandemic. and then the former theranos president is facing similar fraud charges to his exgirlfriend and theranos founder, elizabeth holmes. on monday, holmes was convicted in four counts and she faces up to 20 years in prison with a sentencing hearing still to come. right now to a live look at sfo this morning. airlines still dealing with massive cancelations with the covid-fueled staffing shortages, and the tsa is dealing without breaks. over 3,200 tsa agents have active covid symptoms, and we can see even more cancelations as the east coast gets hit with blizzard-like conditions. nationwide we have seen more
5:47 am
than 2,200 cancelations. here in sfo, 92, san josé, 25 and oakland, 12. >> sorry about that. i choked on my coffee. >> i was ready to pinch-hit. the warriors start a home stand on sunday with the possibility that klay thompson will come back, and the other stars nursing injuries, too. last night the warriors were missing steph curry and draymond green. in the end, new orleans came out on top winning 101-96. the warriors have lost two straight games, and it's not a trend, though. we can confirm -- we can hope. this week the u.s. women's figure skating team is being decided. the u.s. figurer skating khpls under way in nashville, and two hopefuls are from the bay area,
5:48 am
alysa liu is one of the favorites to win, as is karen chen. chen was in second place, and alysa liu in third. the team will be decided tonight after the long program, and you can watch that here on nbc bay area. download the latest podcast from nbclx called my favorite olympian. we are getting to know them. turns out you are right, your dog is smart. man's best friend is able to detect when somebody is speaking your native tongue or foreign language. dogs brains light up differently depending on which one is used. their study is the first demonstration that a nonhuman brain can differentiate between two languages. >> oh, that's cute. now we know binx and cole are
5:49 am
bilingual, and we talk to them in spanish. and then a sesame street clip of elmo losing his cool is going viral. >> he was frustrated after being denied an oatmeal raisin cookie. i understand. check it out. >> you can't have that cookie, elmo. i want to eat it. >> how? >> he didn't even have a mouth! the clip went viral, and elmo reassured fans there was no bad blood between him and rocco. duane "the rock" johnson
5:50 am
tweeted, yeah, this rock eats cookies. i'm almost all out of cookies. >> that could be one of the cutest things i have seen in a long time. i bet he could be on "sesame street." >> yeah, but his meal plan is cheat days, and the cookie monster is it's a sometimes food. cookie crisp cereal. i always tried to get my mom to buy that. i love how y'all just caught me adjusting, and nobody told me i was on camera, and i was trying to make sure my back doesn't hurt in my chair. home life again. i want to start out with this beautiful shot.
5:51 am
it's about 40 degrees right now, and if you are going to be headed to lake tahoe, i do not recommend it. there's a lake wind advisory in effect and gusts have already been reaching from 50, 60 plus miles an hour along the 395 corridor, and we have seen gusts at 80 to 100 miles per hour at the crest of lake tahoe. please don't head up there. better conditions this weekend. we are going to be seeing a chance of shower activity, and also the fog down to about two miles mainly in tracy, though. we will get more fog this weekend, especially into saturday and sunday. the hour-by-hour outlook right now, if you notice the time stamp, it says friday, 8:00 a.m., and santa rosa, novato and the napa area, you will get a lot of the rain. and also moving a little bit down to the south bay, but notice just how, you know, sporadic it is. it's not widespread or continuous.
5:52 am
a couple 100ths of an inch, and that moves out midday and clearing out for the weekend. a couple 0.1 of an inch up through ukiah. daytime highs in the 50s, and we will see some clearing of the skies, a mix of sun and clouds in san josé. by the weekend we are going to see foggy nights and mornings and then sunday night, showers offshore. we will stay dry for this weekend and then there's a possibility looking ahead into next thursday and friday that we see another system move in, and that's going to bring us a chance of seeing more showers in the bay area. inland temperatures will be pretty comfortable. mike, how are the roads doing? >> that was a great note about the winds up in tahoe. highway 80 and 50 are open as far as snow conditions, and vianey gave you the information about the winds so choose
5:53 am
wisely. a crash just pass the toll plaza has this backup going on. the map shows you the before and after the backup, and it's not that bad getting towards the richmond bridge. a smooth flow from the bay bridge toll plaza, and no backup there either. patches of fog in the mission 680 area through fremont and the altamont pass, but no slowing. >> thank you, mike. happening now, amazon is expanding even more here in the bay area.
