(sfx: playful cadence of full soundscape) we are back. coming up o coming up on 7:41 with in depth today. a new warning about a popular tracking device from apple >> these things are called airtags, meant to help you find things like your keys or your wallet, things you can lose easily now police are warning people to be careful after reports of airtags being used to commit crimes >> nbc's senior consumer investigative correspondent vicky nguyen joins us with that story. vicky, good morning. >> good morning to all of you. here it is this is what it looks like the apple airtag, relatively small and quite lightweight, which makes it easy to attach pretty much to anything without being detected
7:42 am
it also costs just about $30, so it is a cheap and simple way for bad guys to follow things like your car, or even to track you this morning, we spoke to sports illustrated swimsuit model brooks nader speaking exclusively to nbc news to tell us that someone used one of these to follow her. >> i was at the bar, alone >> reporter: model brooks nader at a crowded bar in manhattan when she says someone dropped an apple airtag into her coat pocket the device links to a cellphone through the find my app, designed to help you track your things but now it is being linked to concerns about safety and privacy. >> when i was almost home, i got this notification on my home screen pop-up saying that i was being tracked and i had been for a while now. which is basically when i knew something wasn't right. >> reporter: nader estimates the airtag was in her pocket for five hours, the device's owner able to track her every move before she got the alert. >> i didn't know what an airtag

7:45 am
sound this alarm if they're away from their owners for eight to 24 hours in a statement, apple says we take customer safety very seriously and are committed to airtags' privacy and security. airtag is designed with a set of proactive features to discourage unwanted tracking, a first in the industry that both inform users if an unknown airtag might be with them and to deter bad actors for using airtags for nefarious reasons. if you do find one of these devices or you get that alert on your phone, law enforcement experts say don't go home, that could reveal where you live to the bad guys department or a public space and call police from there ask them to come out and to investigate. apple has said it will cooperate with law enforcement on these cases. each one of these airtags has a serial number that can help track who owns it. so the other question that we get is what if you have an android phone? apple did release an app for android phones that will allow

"today" nutritionist joy bauer and dr. jordan metzl, sports medicine physician joy, we'll get started with you. let's go diets a lot of people were googling away the top searched question about dieting is what is the keto diet. >> so keto stands for the ketogenic diet it is a low carb plan that encourages eating high amounts of fat and moderate amounts of protein. it puts your body into a state of ketosis, we're burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. while it is somewhat controversial, a lot of folks have great success so i want to take a look at what foods are on the menu. so, first, we have red meat,
8:51 am
fatty and lean we have full fat dairy eggs, poultry and fish butter and oil, nuts and seeds, which are inherently very low in carbs and avocados now we're going to look at the foods to limit, and this is where it gets a little bit tricky so it is all of the carbohydrate categories you want to keep the carbs under 40 grams per day getting to that state of ketosis. we think of carbs, we're limiting the breads, the rice, the pasta, potatoes, beans and lentils, most fruits and starchy vegetables and sweets. you have to nickel and dime these things. >> all right right let's move to the let's move on. let's head to the d.a.s.h. diet. tell me about this >> so d.a.s.h., this stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension this one is really important for people to know because the cdc estimates that 47% of adult americans have hypertension. that's high blood pressure
8:52 am
when you look at the foods to eat, this is very thoughtfully comprised of foods rich in potassium, fiber, calcium and magnesium. these nutrients help to drive down our blood pressure numbers. and you'll see lots of healthful foods. fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy, fish and sweets, salt because a lot of people are salt sensitive, which poultry and nuts the foods to avoid, high fats, sweets, salt, a lot of people are salt sensitive which increases blood pressure, and the booze. >> got it. okay and just give me ten seconds on the mediterranean diet that's a big one >> wildly famous and for the fifth year in a row, named by u.s. news and world report as the best overall diet. so we like to look at the eating styles of the countries that border the mediterranean sea they have less cancer and heart ailments than we do here in america. >> got it. >> lots of plants, hoda.
8:53 am
again, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils, heart healthy olive oil for sure and the foods to avoid, again, or not avoid, you just want to sort of minimize will be things like the fatty red meat, eggs and poultry, cheese and yogurt and sweets it is not about avoiding them, but minimizing, so laying low on them. >> we got it we got to get to exercise. dr. metzl, the number one searched question for exercise is how to lose weight without exercising please answer that question. >> hoda, that's a magical question everyone wants to know that this time of year everybody thinks if i just exercise a lot, i can lose weight and certainly exercise is part of a losing weight strategy but i would guesstimate about 70% of losing weight is in front of joy and that beautiful table decoration she had set up there, the great fruits and vegetables and 30% is exercise. you might say, why am i going to exercise if i'm going to see 30%
