variant now makes up almost all new covid cases in the u.s. a staggering 98%. it happened at lightning speed too, spreading in just over one month. with covid cases surging and hospitalizations hitting all-time highs, the cdc is now considering whether to update its own mask guidance, potentially recommending americans choose higher quality options like n-95s or the chinese-made kn-95. >> they are really, really tight fitting and help filter out very small airborne droplets of covid. >> reporter: the typical surgical mask provides decent protection but doesn't seal tightly around the nose and mouth. the biden administration also taking a big step to keep kids in school, announcing this morning it will hand out 5 million rapid covid tests and another 5 million lab-based pcr tests to schools nationwide every month for free. meanwhile the nation's top health officials faced a grilling on capitol hill. tuesday's testimony punctuated by this very concerning message. >> most people are going to get covid. >> reporter: the experts were

mask and potentially new guidance from the cdc on better masks. there are also concerns about fake ones appearing online. how do you make sure you're not getting a bad one? >> you've got to do your homework. the cdc is warning in fact that about 60% of the kn-95s, those are the masks that are made in china, that they, 60% are are counterfeit. so when buying an n-95, that's the american made, look for the stamp that says niosh. that certifies from the government there's also a nonprofit project called project n-95.org, a great website, which links to certified and vetted masks but it can be confusing. listen, you've got an n-95, this is also an n-95. this is called a kn-95 there's also something called the kf-95 in korea you have to do your homework to make sure you get something vetted and certified. >> just adding to the confusion there, tom

thank you very much for trying to clear it up, appreciate it. meanwhile the battle over voting rights is intensifying in the wake of a major speech from president biden. the president declaring he is tired of being quiet on the issue, throwing his full support behind changing senate rules if that's what it takes to pass new legislation. kelly o'donnell has more on all of this. hey, kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. the president is going big on this issue, but he can only persuade he has no direct power to change voting rights laws or the rules of the senate. now, these bills would guard against states enacting discriminatory practices and would nationalize rules for things like early voting and mail-in ballots. the president says protecting the country's democracy is his job. >> let's go get this done. >> reporter: this morning, president biing a stark choice for senators, as pressure builds to expand voting rights. >> do you want to be on the side of dr. king or george wallace?

it pushes down friday, bringing snow to the plains into the midwest. we're talking from the dakotas all the way down into iowa about 6, maybe even 8 inches of snow saturday dives into the gulf, picks up moisture, picks up over the appalachians and then brings heavy snow potentially from knoxville, roanoke, charleston, then makes its way up the coast bringing snow inland if it's right along the coast, heaviest snow is in the inland cities, roanoke, pittsburgh, albany, new york, up into boston if it's offshore that snow moves east and all along the i-95 corridor so, guys, we'll continue to track this but it's going to be an interesting next several days. >> you'll have your eye on that, mr. roker. it is 7:14 good time to say hello to craig. you have an incredible story of survival. >> yeah, hoda, good morning. good morning to you as well.

a medical helicopter carrying an infant and three others crashed in a busy residential neighborhood but here's the thing, everyone onboard made it out alive. a remarkable story this morning. nbc's national correspondent gabe gutierrez joins us with it. gabe, good morning to you. >> hey, craig, good morning. just about everyone who saw this happen is calling it a miracle, crediting the pilot with a heroic landing this morning the ntsb is investigating why this medical helicopter crashed tuesday in a residential neighborhood just west of philadelphia but what's truly remarkable is that everyone onboard, including a 2-month-old baby girl, survived >> it was absolutely insane. i've never seen anything like this. >> i literally see the chopper in the sky like right there. and so i'm stopped but then there's a moment where i realize this is going to hit the ground so that's when i pulled into reverse. >> reporter: this man was driving his family and says he barely missed the aircraft.

>> this is absolutely a miracle from the lord. >> reporter: a miracle, witnesses say, right next to a church. >> it's an absolute miracle here what you see behind you. there's no debris, no wires down, no trees. >> reporter: the chopper had been flyinspital of philadelphia carrying two crew members, a nurse and the infant. >> everyone is out of the helicopter. arrived, but witnesses say they could see the chopper was in trouble moments before the >> we heard the loud noise we looked up and we saw how low the helicopter was. >> reporter: according to flight aware the chopper first took off from maryland around 10:30 tuesday morning. minutes later it landed with no apparent problems about 20 miles away in central pennsylvania before taking off again. it was about 40 minutes into that next flight when tracking data shows the aircraft dropping altitude that's when authorities believe the pilot noticed a problem. >> what the pilot was able to do was amazing. our reports indicate that he first started to experience some trouble on route 1 and was

>> look forward to that. wow. let's get a check of your headlines. 7:30 now an investigation under way this morning into the shooting death of a north carolina man by an off-duty sheriff's deputy. the shooting has sparked days of protests in fayetteville on saturday police say 37-year-old jason walker ran into traffic, jumped onto the deputy's truck and broke his shot walker and then called 911. the deputy has been igation. a passenger was arrested yesterday after reportedly entered the cockpit of an american airlines plane and damaged the aircraft it happened while passengers were boarding. it was a flight from honduras to miami. the cockpit door was open when the man stormed in i think you can see him right there.

there he is out the plane's window crew members intervened and ultimately the suspect was taken into custody the flight was delayed for several hours so they could find another plane to be flown and complete the trip. a colorado woman is being called a hero after rescuing three children from an icy pond. dusty talivera was looking out her apartment window when she saw the kids fall in she ran out and pulled two of the children from the water. as she tried to grab the 6-year-old girl, the ice gave way and she fell in too. thankfully that girl's cousin came out, threw her a rope and helped pull them both to safety. >> i just kind of put some shoes on and ran out i just knew that nobody was really outside so i mean i was going to -- it was me, you know i just knew it was me that had to do it. >> what she did was amazing. we were back at the fire station talking about how brave she was, how great the officers did, and,

ten years after the costa concordia ran aground off the italian coast survivors are sharing new details. >> kelly cobiella joins us this morning with their stories kelly, good morning. >> reporter: guys, good morning to you hard to believe it's been ten years since that disaster, but it's still very much fresh in the minds of the people who suffered through it, those lucky passengers who managed to get off the ship alive it was supposed to be a dream cruise, sailing around the mediterranean sea for a week in mid-january. but ten years ago this week, it turned into a nightmare for the over 4,000 passengers and crew onboard. the liner crashing into the rocks after dark, sea water rushing in janice and ian donoff were on their honeymoon.

decorated female skier of all time lindsey vonn, she's won 82 world cup wins, 20 world cup titles. she's got three olympic medals to her name. and now, guys, she's peeling back the curtain on her remarkable life and career it's a new memoir called "rise, my story." what a beautiful title, lindsey, it's so good to see you. as i'm looking at you, i'm thinking about america looking at lindsey vonn and saying wow, talk about someone who's had it all, who's had a charmed life, who seems without care or worry. when you page through the pages of "rise" you learn all of the vulnerabilities, the depression you battled. i was just thinking was it cathartic to finally say, hey, this is finally me

>> like to your point, everyone thinks that life is great, i have success, everything is perfect. but, first of all, no one is perfect and i definitely am not. i've had my struggles. obviously i have crashed many times in my career i've come back from many, many injuries but i've also had personal struggles. most of which i talk about some things i don't, like my relationships, but, you know, for me, my story, it was really important for me to get out my story after retiring from my skiing career and really being able to close that chapter, so to speak, of my life and move forward. >> let's talk about battling depression it happened when you were a teenager it kind of hit you when your parents split up and i think when people think of depression, they don't know how bad it can get if you were to try to put your finger on how bad it got, what would that be? >> i mean i definitely struggled and when i was a teenager i had a very hard time and then i got through it. you know, i got medication and

saw a therapist and things like that it really reared its head most of the time when i was injured, especially after my second acl surgery and i was missing the sochi olympics you know, i was very isolated and just very depressed. but i had a great support system and that's really what got me through it, being able to lean on other people and also being able to talk openly about it in 2012 i actually talked openly about it and i felt like that really opened the door for me. it was a huge weight off my shoulders. and again now, writing this book, it feels like an even bigger weight has been taken off my shoulders. >> i picture you at the top of the hill, you know, and a lot of people are battling nerves and expectations you're battling depression and other things as well but there you were with all those titles we just read, with all of this excellence so it just struck me that you were able to maintain excellence despite all of these sort of monkeys that you had on your

back. >> i mean skiing was the one thing that i really -- that could make me happy, and that was my escape, my emotional escape, my physical escape, everything that i -- all of the emotions that i was going through i really put into my skiing and i used that in so many ways as my therapy and also as a crutch. and i think that's why retiring was so hard for me because i no longer had that crutch to lean on you know, i really was stuck with my own emotions and my own thoughts and sometimes being alone can be a very scary place. so, again, it was good for me to reflect and process all of that and be able to now have the skills to cope with everything that ideal with, without using skiing in that way. >> a lot of women will be able to relate to this. you have confidence at work. on the slopes you're like i got this a lot of women have confidence at work. but when it comes to personal relationships, it's like the

confidence just evaporates we don't know where it goes. and that same thing happened with you >> yeah, definitely. i feel like i was so much in control of my skiing career, but when it came to my personal life i was very much a passenger. i think i chose to shy away from conflict you know, i don't -- i don't like getting in arguments, so i tend to be very passive and not stand up for what i want and what i need. i think also too because i was so focused on skiing i didn't know exactly what i wanted and what i needed. so it's been a good maturing process for me, these few years since retiring, and now i feel like i finally am really happy because i know who i am without skiing i know what i want and i can stand up for that. >> well, we just read your titles, i'll say them again. 82 world cup wins, 20 world cup titles, 7 world champion medals. people would have asked you lindsey vonn who are you, and you probably would have said skier. so today if i were to ask the question, lindsey vonn, who are

so i tell people get yourself a food scale measure out portions so you can start to train your eye back to seeing what a proper portion looks like don't eyeball it unless you really know it >> okay. is there a handy-dandy place you can find out how much the things you're eating should weigh >> you always have that thing like if it c should be the size of your fist. you know, it's like i try to work in that 5 ounces of protein, a cup of carbs, a tablespoon of fat, things like that but you really don't know unless you actually measure it out. you've got to see what 5 ounces of steak looks like, savannah. >> yeah, i know. i have a feeling it's not what i usually help myself to anyway, the cooldown is really important. your next gadget has to do with cooling down, stretching, that kind of thing? >> yeah. it's these thera-guns. this is a motor operated so it vibrates so it really helps with

great raw, it's great wilted, with dressing the next day it's also wonderful cooked it has a ton of vitamins it has vitamin a, vitamin c, vitamin b, vitamin k, a ton of antioxidants calcium, potassium, you and a quarter it you can use this hearty, hearty winter green so i have two kinds of kale hereamiliar withen i have this,s called dragon kale this is the kale that i like the best you just want to take the center stem and strip that off and then just chop it what i like to do is buy the kale whole, wash it, dry it on kitchen towels take that center stem off and

chop it up and then put it in a bag and leave it in my crisper so it's always ready for me to throw into all my soups and salads you know, sometimes those lettuces are great if you don't finish your salad, you have to throw out the salad. whereas if you have a salad made with kale, instead of those lettuces which are mostly water and don't have the same nutrients, you can have that salad for two or three days. >> padma, i hear some people massage the kale do you do that >> i don't massage the kale. i just chop it real fine >> so what are we making >> we're going to bounce around with some recipes just because i'm cooking here so i have sauted some just plain yellow onion with some oil and two red chilies, you see that? those are sauteing and to that i'm ginger and some minced garlic and that is going

into this lentils which we'll make in a minute but i just want to get that going so it browns and cooks nicely to that i'm adding a little bit of ground turmeric i feel like i'm doing one of those beauty instagram things. i'm going to saute this and let that go. while that's going, i'm going to show you this salad. look at this beautiful salad. >> mozzarella? >> chickpeas >> i made this a while back on another holiday season it's simple. pomegranate, pearl mozzarella, mint, it's dressed so basically with just olive oil, balsalmic and lime juice i'm going to take that salad and i'm going to add a bunch of chopped kale to it this salad then becomes more hearty and it lasts much longer than any other salad would and it's filling frankly, this would make a great
