we begin this morning with a tsunami erupted in the u.s. for tonga and american samoa. there is a threat of low-line coastal areas. we just showed you the time lap video. that means california, oregon and washington, and the canadian province and british columbia could be impacted by tsunami waves flooding-low lying in coastal areas. basically does it mean that people should stay away from the coast? >> the biggest message is move away from the beach. as we continue to monitor this situation, that's the biggest threat essentially. not going to be a great beach. closer look, the tsunami advisory is for the entire west coast. where you see the highlighted

areas, the event is under evaluation for the west coast and the message is to move away from the beach as we continue to monitor for potential updates. this is the entire west coast, i zoom in closer, you can see for the majority of the bay area, anything highlighted in orange is going to be a potential threat. i will be monitoring this closely to see anything else we may be under at a glance for as far as which specific area may potentially be impacted from this. for now, the advisory is the most powerful event for coastal areas. this is california, oregon, washington, british columbia and alaska this morning. the national weather service ruled out widespread at this time. people could expect to see strong currents and dangerous waves. the message is to move away from the water. this is from the national weather service, the tsunami advisory will remain in effect.

i will be back with your full update and your forecast coming up in just a few minutes. we'll turn to our ongoing coronavirus coverage, there is new word from the cdc, wearing an n-95 or a kn-95 will be your best protection from the omicron variant. finding them could be difficult. today in the bay cheryl hurd found some information to moving forward. >> reporter: as you walk ento ace hardware, the sign says kn-95 masks here. >> when i saw the sign in front. >> reporter: it caught this woman off guard. >> she says they're hard to fine. if i go online, i may not get it either because it's in such high demand. >> reporter: this ace hardware has a lot of inventory to n-95

and kn-95 masks. it has not always been that way. it was not long ago the cdc recommended that only first responders to wear n-95 masks. the cdc is saying they're the best protection against coronavirus and something the general public may choose to wear. making them harder to get a hold of. a lot of people can't get them so we have to buy them like 10,000 at a time which is quite an investment but we know people need them. what do you do if you can't find one? >> we actual lino a lot more masks two years in than we did. >> reporter: you see dr. gandi says there are other options. something called the kf-94, double masks which is cloth and surgical. i put the surgical on the outside and the fourth one is those cloth ones with the filters inside. >> reporter: the rules could be

different for children. young kids could wear surgical but it has to be made for their faces and they have to tuck it on their side and double loop. managers say either they have masks or they expect shipments to come in soon. cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. millions of dollars worth of ppe left out in the rain. san mateo leaders are saying extra safety equipment and cleaning supplies for the pandemic were moved outside of their event center a few months back and the storms hit. supplies include face shields, goggles, gowns, cleaning product like bleach. it's all worth about $7 million. in a statement the san mateo county manager says "we deeply regret this occurred and are hiring an investigator to identify all facts related in the damage and make recommendations to avoid future

incidents." ism free covid tests for all americans. the biden administration is hoping a new website will provide access to at-home covid test starting this wednesday you will be able to log on covidtests.gov and place your order. the white house says it also will set up a phone number so americans who don't have internet access can still place their orders. hospitalizations are still skyrocketing in california. state health leaders expect to see this trend for the next few weeks. the blue line shows the number of patients hospitalized with the virus since mid-december and the red line represents forecast

hospitalizations. hospitalizations will peak at the end of janupresents forecast hospitalizations. hospitalizations will peak at the end of january. because the omicron is so highly contagious, there is a possibility of being infected more than once. that's a new warning from health leaders this morning. the dean of the brown university school of public health and a doctor with the world health organization are urging people to get vaccinated and boosted. bay area health experts agreed omicron can strike more than once. new cases are indicating natural immunity after infection does not last. >> protection from the first infection is looking not very good. at least in very preliminary data from the united kingdom. only about 20% of protection about getting infected again. so by all means don't think because you have had it or because you had that booster that you can go out and don't have to worry about getting omicron. >> local doctors maintain

sending tsunami waves rushing towards the island nation. people are being advised to stay off beaches and away from harbors until after 9:00 this morning. we'll continue to keep you updated throughout this newscast. we are going to turn now to people who live in a public housing complex in marin city, they say there is a rodent

investation there not enough is being done. what about the rest of the people who are still in the building? sergio quintana reports. >> reporter: these are photos shared by residents. you can see what looks like a mouse under her sink but that's a small one compares to what her granddaughter saw. >> he was black and long. >> reporter: i talked to sheila tonight she says the situation in her unit inside 59 cole drive is unbearable. >> i take a hot bath feeling like they're going to come in. it's really a problem. >> reporter: rodents are a problem the building have had for a few years but recently it has been worse. a spokesperson for the marin house authority contacted an

exterminator to deal with the pest. the location of the property next to a wilderness area as well as the age of the facility and in some cases it could be a challenge. >> reporter: residents say they heard this already. >> the housing authority is going to begin but the thing is when. this is an emergency situation. >> reporter: robinson says she feels it's a battle every time she goes home. >> when i come in for work, they're in the front, just like they live there like i do. >> reporter: the housing authority have moved one building out of the building because of the infestation. people are still there. sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. laurie smith faces the judge virtually.

it's an unusual case because even though the charges are not criminal, if the sheriff loses her case, legal experts state that state law requires she would be removed from office. our senior investigator was allowed to follow yesterday on public hearing on zoom but could not record it under the judge's order. the sheriff faces seven misconduct allegations, her office traded concealed weapon permits for campaign contributions. the seventh is over the transfer of an inmate who ended up with permanent damage by the time he reached county jail. >> this is as rare proceeding so we don't have any guidance on how do this. >> reporter: the sheriff did not enter a plea. her attorney needs more time to file the objection to the allegation. we have followed the development surrounding the sheriff's scandal for years. we'll stay on top of the development moving you forward.

to learn more, visit our website on nbcbayarea.com. new research suggests compounds and cannabis could prevent coronavirus infection. researchers conducted a study found two compounds in hemp could block a critical step in the coronavirus infection process. it could be a major break through in treating and preventing covid-19 but it's still in the early stages. so far the research only been conducted in a human cells in a lab. a critical trial will be necessary to determine how it's on humans. >> someone who's been exposed to another person with the virus may be somebody who was traveling, maybe this would be an ideal product to help people remain healthy. researchers cautioned the compounds in the study are not the same found in recreational

who saved 150 people on plane. if ferry crew did not responded in such urgency, many people could have died. it's 7:19, let's check on vianey arana for the latest on the tsunami warning here. >> for us it's an advisory, thankfully. that is what's now triggered the tsunami advisory for the entire west coast. this is according to the national weather service. we are monitoring this closely, i want to show you where this was. this was registered as an earthquake, a volcano actually and now it's a tsunami advisory again. that includes california, oregon, british columbia and also alaska. that volcano erupted registered as a 7.6 magnitude earthquake

strength. think about it. when you think of eruption with a volcano comparing that to an earthquake strength. the way it's going to impact us, national weather service ruled out complete inundation. what they are focused on is stay away from the water of the coastline. don't go on the morning walk on the coast. don't head to the beach. people near the water could see those strong currents and dangerous waves. we could see a rise of about 1 to 3 feet for some of those waves around the coastline. here is a closer look on how to prepare. move higher in land and stay away from the beach. if you are located in the coastal areas, stay out of the harbors of the marinas. think of how cold the water is. if you are walking around the water with a 3 to 1 foot rising wave, that could knock you off your feet and pull you back into

the ocean. with how cold the water is, there is also the idea of hypothermia. please be careful because the wavers are going to be really strong. also, wait for the all-clear, this advisory remains in effect, you want to stay vigilant, we'll keep you updated on that. i want to take you to your weather and show you how that's going to shape out. the biggest thing is the tsunami threat. be mindful of that. you are taking a live look in san francisco. not seeing a lot of cloud cover out there, we are noticing the fog through parts of santa rosa and napa and the tracy area. less than a mile down through this central area but you know we are going to notice the clouds are going to linger in the afternoon temperatures. we'll start out in the 50s and 40s. forecasted highs will be in the 60s. mid-60s for the south bay san jose. we'll keep the dry weather through the weekend but even though it's going to be nice

back now with an update with a story that garvin thomas shared with us couple months ago including a world war ii veteran. >> reporter: a few days before christmas, robert corpus took a flight from the bay area to north carolina. he did not get much sleep on the plane. he kept dreaming he forgotten what was in that bag. the whole reason for his trip. >> i would wake up and startled in the middle of the flight and check underneath my seat to make sure i still have the bag. >> reporter: in that bag was something robert stumbled across a few months ago while cruising the boots at the antique fair. >> we got a photo album. >> reporter: robert discovered the life story of a world war ii veteran joseph peno. this album could not have landed

in better hands. >> reporter: robert dedicated half his life in preserve ing stories of world war ii veterans. so when robert saw the album and the inscription inside saying it should have been sent to joseph's grandson years ago. well, robert knew what he had to do. >> hey. >> chris. >> reporter: he bought the album and track down joseph's family back east and got on a plane. >> this one, he had all the stuff. >> reporter: robert did not trust the mail. >> joseph's son and grandson poured over each and every picture, most of which they never seen before. it was also something new to robert. he spent much of his time raising to preserve the stories of world war ii vets while they

it's 7:30 on the dot as we welcome you on this saturday morning. we have breaking news this morning, a tsunami advisory has been issued for the west coast to the u.s. following an under sea vol volcanic eruption. this is what's triggering in hawaii. it erupted off the coast of tonga last night sending massive tsunami waves crashing into that nation. here in the bay area, people are advised to avoid the harbors. this is a live look at the santa

cruz a harbor this morning. may be the calm before the storm. we want to tell you that hawaii is now reporting that waves there have been large enough to lift boats out of the water entirely. currently california, oregon, washington state, alaska and the canadian province of british columbia could all be affected by the tsunami waves, flooding low lines and coastal areas. let's check in our vianey arana on a little bit more on what we can expect today, the bottom line is stay away from the coasts. >> yes, that's a big message especially from the national weather service. folks could be caught off guards, it's really nice and you can go for a walk and waves pick up. it could be dangerous. the strength of this felt as though it was a 7.6 magnitude earthquake strength. that tells you how strong the impact was. locally in the bay area, we are under a tsunami advisory.

it's a less level threat than a tsunami warning. it's still a threat. for the entire west coast again, california, oregon and washington and british columbia, alaska, the message is move away from the water. we are seeing strong currents and dangerous waves as kira mentioned in hawaii. we could see a one to three foot wave. i want to show you a zoom in. if you live near the water, you may want to prepare move higher in land and stay away from the marina because of these dangerous waves and currents. you can be walking around the water, it may seem okay but one of those dangerous sweeps come, it can get you into water. we are going to monitor this closely, still very dangerous. kira, i will send it over to you. >> thanks so much, we'll check back with you. now to our coronavirus

organizations. the biden administration is unveiling new website to provide access for free at home access to all americans. beginning this wednesday, you will be able to log on covidtests.gov and place your orders. they'll be useful if you develop symptoms or become expose to covid. the white house will set up a phone number so americans who don't have internet access can place their orders. state health leaders expect hospital hospitalizations to continue to continue to skyrocket the next few weeks. the blue line shows the number of patients hospitalized with coronavirus since december. the red line represents hospitalizations that are forecast. california state health leaders anticipate hospitalizations will peak at the end of this month. now experts say we are far from

herd immunity and there is a possible that you can be infected more than once. >> we are seeing second cases of omicron, more often of people who have not been vaccinated. there is people who have been vaccinated but second cases of omicron in those groups. >> i expect we'll see reinfection with omicron. >> reporter: infectious disease experts say omicron can strike more than once. natural immunity after infection does not last. >> the degree of protection from a prior variant is not anything that count on when it comes to omicron. >> the protection from the first infection is looking not very good at least in preliminary data from the unite kingdom suggests maybe about 20% of protection getting infected

good morning bay area, this is following an under water volcano eruption under american samoa. right now we are under a tsunami advisory. a live look right now at the boat launched in santa cruz harbor. we have police activities. they are asking residents around the entire west coast to stay away from the water. a tsunami advisory is considered

a lower level threat than a warning but the threat of waves and strong currents is what's going to be the biggest thing heading into this morning. you don't want to head into the beach today. definitely keep an eye out for that. wait until we get the all clear. let me show you a closer look of what i am talking about. i am talking about this tsunami advisory from the west coast issued from the national weather service. this includes california, oregon, washington and british columbia and alaska. the entire highlighted areas and the national weather services telling everybody to move away from the water. the biggest threats are the strongest current and dangerous waves. we could see a rise anywhere from one to three feet. we don't know the exact timing from this, once this advisory remains, it remains a threat. the big area, watch out

fisherman's wharf and into ports of oakland, any of the marinas. head to higher grounds because you want to move higher in land, you want to have a family plan. so stay in alert until we wait for the all clear, this is going to remain a threat. this is a tsunami threat, not a warning. the national weather service is advising folks to stay away from the water. we would not want to see somebody getting swept in and get caught off guard by that. let's get to your forecast of course because your outlook right now remains dry and again even though it looks like a nice day, if you have family and friends living around the water, maybe they have not tune into news, let them know do not go out for a jog run, stay in land and stay on higher ground. we are seeing visibilities through santa rosa and napa and down to the concord area. san jose at 42 degrees right

now. again a little bit longer. daytime highs today we'll top out in the 60s. it's going to be similar to yesterday, we are still see this high pressure that's going to dominate and keeping any chance of rain to our north and south at least it looks like right now in outlook until the end of january with a better chance of seeing some rain heading into february. in land forecast we remain in the 60s and remaining dry into the start of the workweek in tuper 50s. that tsunami advisory is in effect for the entire west coast. basically stay away from the water. go to higher ground. just avoid the water all together. it's a dangerous situation, i want people to take it seriously, i saw police car out there at the santa cruz beach. be mindful and stay informed with us. our enforcement is getting involved and making sure people are staying away and happening at the berkeley marina, thank you for all of that information,

we are under a tsunami advisory at least until 9:00 this morning. as we have been discussing, this is the breaking news. the tsunami advisory has been issued for the west coast of the entire u.s. this is what triggered this tsunami warning for hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the bay area. it was an under volcano erupted in tonga. people are being advised to avoid the harbors out of abundance of caution.

hawaii is reporting waves there have been large enough to lift boats out of the water. it's 7:50 right now. back here in san francisco schools, we have more masks available for staff and students after a deal with union to keep classrooms open. # the deal includes testing at school sites and n-95 and kn-95 masks for students and teachers. this new agreement requires that student masks being upgraded. contra costa district posted on twitter, they are feeling the impact of the omicron surge looking for substitute teachers and asking anyone who can be a certified sub please do so and sign up for help.

entire bay area. an under water volcano erupted off the coast of tonga last night and that sent massive tsunami waves crashing into that island nation. thousands of waves, people are being advised to avoid the coastlines and harbors all together. we gave you that live look and this is the time lapse video of what happened over night. let's send it over to our meteorologist vianey arana for what it means for all of us. mainly stay away from the water. >> that's the biggest message. if you have family or friends just now waking up to the news, how do you prepare? >> if national weather service is saying tsunami is expected to reach san francisco around 8:00 or 10:00 a.m. the biggest threats are going to be dangerous centers, dangerous waves and strong rip currents. you want to stay away from the water and move to highland in lands. no morning walks around the

coastline, nothing like that. you have to wait for the all clear. with the arrival of these strong waves there could be flooding of especially of those low-lying areas. when you see police activity in your area, listen up and pay attention. how to prepare? you want to stay away from the water, that's the biggest message this morning. share with family and friends and give them a phone call and let them know on social media as well. i have had a couple of people asked me well, what does it mean for me if i am in in land area. you want to stay up to date of the news. this is expected to reach san francisco around 8:00 or 10:00 a.m. the national weather service ruled out complete inundation with those dangerous waves that's going to remain a threat. >> stay away from the water and continue to stay away as the morning progresses until we are in the clear as you say vianey arana. >> this could be anywhere from one to two hours.
