we will top out in the 60s today. it will be a comfortable afternoon. it will set us up nicely for the rest of the workweek, and i will have a closer look at that forecast coming up in a few minutes, but first let's check in with mike. vianey, the tri-valley has all the activity if any at all. we are looking at a light traffic flow, but highway 84 we have a crash on the shoulder as you make the transition. the car was on the shoulder. we have the closure for pleasanton and sunol road along 680, and 680 is your alternate instead of needing to find one through the tri-valley. the rest of the bay shows green sensors, and we will call out a couple other popular spots coming up. back to you. for some bay area health care workers, they are taking a

day of action. >> a lot centers around the dispute about the day itself and how it should be considered. and unhappy workers are planning to walk off the job. good morning, cierra. >> reporter: good morning, kris. an individual we spoke to said she plans to participate in the walkout and will likely be joined by hundreds of others at the oakland and richmond kaiser locations. these are mental health clinicians that say their holiday was given to them and then taken back. they are calling it a day of action for those kaiser mental health clinicians. not only are those workers at the sites, the oakland and richmond sites protesting a lack of holiday, but they are looking at an inequity in the staffing. staffing does not reflect what their patients of color request, especially to some patients will

feel more comfortable opening up to. >> as they walk in and see only one or two clinicians that look like me, and they wonder if it's a safe place to go. >> and then we reached out kaiser about not granting those workers the mlk day. kaiser permanente will adopt starting in 2023 mlk day as a scheduled paid holiday across the organization. that worker we spoke with said despite that statement, she as well as others plan to protest to draw attention to that inequity as well as their disappointment with them taking that holiday back, again at the oakland and richmond locations. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> good to know. thank you. our celebration is celebrating the life and legacy of martin luther king jr., and one organization is hosting a week full of events in his honor.

middle of the pacific ocean. gas, steam and ash rose like a mushroom. the boom was heard as far away as alaska. that water just swallowing things up. the good news is that up to this point there are no reports of deaths. for people in the bay area, meanwhile, it was a reminder of how powerful the ocean can be. neighbors in tiburon were breathing a sigh of relief, and the waves did tear away a dock. >> we were constantly looking out, and the water would come in and go out, come in and go out. after a point it started to recede and then did not come back in. >> for the most part the tsunami caused minor flooding but had a lot of people saying they would like to take future warnings a little more seriously.

to make that could cause them to be delayed in where they are getting today. apple will require all store and corporate employees to get a booster shot. this is according to a report siting an e-mail. the workers will have four weeks to comply with the new policy once they become eligible for a booster shot, otherwise they will need to take frequent test to enter a store or office starting on february 15th. peloton not immune or amusing, consumers will feel the pinch. over the weekend the company announced plans to raise the prize of the bike and tread models. depending on what model you by, it's about 20% more than what it used to cost. subscriptions and content do not

beautiful start to our week so far. satellite radar, we do have a little activity down through monterey county and this is a system that pushed up from the south. high pressure has been blocking any chance of rain. we had a system to the north and of course to the south. once we get out of the sprinkle area, we will get a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures will be in the upper 50s for san francisco. 59 degrees in san francisco. martinez, 59. down through the south bay, 69 for san josé. 62 for morgan hill. let's get a check of fog and visibility. not a worry down through the south bay, but if you look at livermore and concord, down to four miles of visibility. novato, we have dry and rough patches through some of the areas there. long range outlook. what can we expect? any real chance of seeing rain? not for the remainder of january. the dry pattern will continue and we will see wind start to

kick up in the middle of the week. we will see the return of high pressure dominating the forecast. this is what will keep us dry and block any real chance of seeing rain at least for now. another popular question i get for south lake tahoe, and i assume it's because it's a holiday and people have the day off. high clouds at times, you don't have to worry about any advisories, wind advisories or anything like that for now. the next three days, fantastic weather in south lake tahoe. a chance for light morning sprinkles in san francisco. tuesday and wednesday we will continue to see the dry weather in the forecast. not just for san francisco but also for inland areas. in through tuesday, wednesday and thursday, mid-60s on trend and even looking out ahead to next weekend where we will wake up to clouds and eventually sunshine will prevail, and that will remain for the next seven days. looking dry for the rest of

january but another update coming up in a few minutes. vianey, south shore has casinos and the north shore does not, and i think some folks are deciding if they have to come back to work if they win. still, the traffic volume is light around the bay, as you see from the green sensors all over the map. we zoom into the area i circled in the tri-valley continuing all morning, we have had this closure for pleasanton and sunol road. wires down overnight, around 1:00 this morning. we are still waiting for pg&e to assess whether or not those are live wires and whether it's safe to reopen the roadway. 680 is the main thoroughfare and it's open. a little distraction there on the shoulder. it may slow folks down where they are going today, and we have modified schedules and that means less service for these agencies. cal tran is not running their real life mlk celebration train,

if you have roku, apple tv and fire. i am kris sanchez. >> i am scott mcgrew. laura and marcus have the day off. the faithful had a heart-stopping win against the cowboys. yeah, fans cheering all over the bay area. this was an sp2 bar and restaurant. the niners won at that moment. anthony flores will have complete highlights coming up. first, let's start with a look at the forecast. vianey arana in for kari this morning. >> it's always fun to see real fans getting excited about it. you know, i think it's fun -- i like sports. fantasy, that's another thing. too many teams to keep up with. 49 degrees in san mateo right now. i always think it's really fun to look at the temperatures in our area, and then compare it to how the rest of the nation is doing.

take a look at the map right here. if you know tuesday in d.c., 37 degrees and then in reno, it's about 24 degrees. houston, 54 degrees and miami, 64 degrees. albuquerque, 27 degrees. we are starting out mild compared to some spots. let's get a look at how roads are doing with mike. vianey, we look over and a lot of folks will say it's an easy drive, and then they look at the bay bridge toll plaza, and then we say it's not bad, a holiday for most folks. very few cars is what we have seen all morning. across the bay, no problems or delays. we are at the minimums for the crossings, bay bridge, san mateo bridge, dumbarton bridge, all at the minimum we typical see. we are still following this issue, the crash off 84 and 680. 680 is open and we will talk about the issues coming up. back to you. >> thank you, mike. hospitals in parts of the

u.s. still overwhelmed by the omicron covid surge. right now more than 140,000 people hospitalized across the nation. in most cases, hospitals are seeing more children. cierra johnson is looking at the cases. >> reporter: it's some of the youngest members of society, those children under the age of five. federal data show they are being hospitalized with covid-19 at higher rates than we have seen at any point in the pandemic before. in a 7-day period that ended last wednesday, the u.s. was averaging 881 newly admitted children and teens with covid-19 each day and the rate of new hospitalizations among that group is six times higher than it was two months ago. the latest surge as been alarming for many kids that are immunocompromised and younger than five.

federal authorization for a vaccine for the youngest kids still expected to be months away. two months after pfizer's covid vaccine authorized for kids ages 5 to 11. just 20%, a little more than a quarter received one shot. only 18% or 5 million kids have both doses. public health officials warned if children do contract covid-19 there could be really long-term affects, including fatigue and breathing problems. kids infected with covid can get what is called multisymptom inflammatory syndrome, and that's a rare but deadly condition. we will keep a close eye on the hospitalizations of the kids in the coming days. we are live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you, cierra. for more on this we want to bring in infectious disease specialist, dr. peter chen hong. thank you for joining us.

i want to go back to something cierra just said, this long term affect children may be happening, and they may not be getting terribly ill but the long-term affects might frighten parents very much. >> yeah, definitely, scott. i think the long term syndrome is very rare but something that happens. we are not sure if it's going to happen with such frequency with omicron as with the previous variant, and that's a reason to pause and hope. we definitely know when the immune system gets activated that later on you can have some of the chronic symptoms that can affect the heart or other organs that happen a few weeks after the illness. >> doctor, you know, it's concerning, a lot of people feel they are more free because they have their covid vaccinations and booster shots and they are not getting terribly sick if

they do contact covid, but these children can't be vaccinated. we have to be mindful of masking. anything else we can do? >> yeah, the easiest thing you can do to protect the children that can get vaccinated, those under five, is to build a wall of immunity around them. that means to vaccinate and boost as many adults, adolescence, kids over five in that child's life, and the more you do that it's harder for the virus to penetrate through that wall. of course, looking out for symptoms and doing testing when people are symptomatic, but not worrying too much, only 1% to 2% of kids get hospitalized even though it looks like a big number, and it's a small chance kids will be hospitalized and fewer will die. >> you don't know which kid it's

going to be. even if it's a few. >> yeah. >> people can now go online and order four free tests per household. we will see more cases as we have more tests, but do you think that will help contain the spread? >> i think to a certain point we will, scott, because that is if a person who is positive stays away from the rest of society who is negative. i mean, it does -- right now you have to assume anybody that you encounter is potentially positive in public, and that's why it comes down to being protected in risky settings. that's indoors, and wearing a higher grade mask. i like a kn-95, it's more comfortable than an n95, and otherwise your basic mask is at minimum a surgical mask that is

well fitted or double mask as well. >> we are hearing about boosters and how important they are at keeping our immune systems strong enough to handle the covid. what are you saying to people that contracted covid and got the booster shot. we know it's less severe, but how much less severe? >> to tell you the truth, kris, i have not seen a lot of people who have been boosted in the hospital. it's still about 90% unvaccinated. otherwise immunocompromised, and they definitely could get a vaccine and not have a response. if people are getting boosted, actually the most important symptom is no symptoms because their body is so mild -- or taking -- being, you know, dealing with the virus so mildly they may not be symptomatic. it's estimated as much as 20% of people may not know they have

covid, so that's why it's important to keep your guard up when you are going out and about. >> the folks who are counting on herd immunity and still have not been vaccinated, it's likely they could end up in the hospital if they contract it at this point? >> definitely. i think one of the myths of omicron is it's mild, but, sure, it's not as deadly as previous variants, but people are coming into the hospital because too many people are infected and that's why you are seeing hospitalization rates increase and hospitals are beginning to break at the seams. for all of us, we need to hit that pause button as much as we can. you know, i think for people unvaccinated, it's no guarantee for the future. look at omicron. again, i tell you people are still coming into the hospital. having had delta is no protection for having omicron, and having omicron doesn't mean you will be protected in the future for some other variant.

with cloud cover. starting out with sunshine, 64 degrees in san josé. 59 in oakland and in san francisco. 61 in napa. santa rosa, 62. we will remain in the mid-60s. this is going to set us up for a long-range outlook of a dry pattern. notice the rain stays to our north. portland and seattle areas will continue to see that system, and in through january 18th, we could see wind from the system. january 22nd and 23rd, we then get the return of high pressure and that's what is going to keep us dry through the end of january. if you have plans to head to south lake tahoe, the weather is absolutely beautiful right now. high clouds at times on tuesday, wednesday and thursday, and daytime highs in the 40s and overnight lows to the 17 and 22

mark. right now sierra snowpack, statewide average at 126%. that series of storms brought a nice boost to the sierra snowpack, but we should see more storms in january. we could start to see rain moving in but that's in the long range out look. for now the 7-day forecast looks dry. temperatures in the 50s for san francisco and low 60s through the end of the week, and even looking out ahead towards next weekend, friday, saturday and sunday, notice the temperatures, no big fluctuations or anything like that. overnight lows in the 40s once you get rid of the morning sprinkles. we will get peeks of sunshine at times depending on where you are. it will take longer to clear along the coastline and in through san francisco. it will be a nice week ahead. not a bad week to start off for a monday. mike, how are you roads doing? >> great. light traffic right now. we just have one spot. got to call it out. it's a closure but it's not the

freeway, it's alongside 680. the wires came down just after 1:00 this morning, that's when they were reported. don't know if they are electrical wires so we don't want to reopen that road, caltrans and chp. we did reopen 84, and that's what i was alerted, the slowing sensors that showed up in through sunol but things cleared up and it took five minutes for that recovery. light traffic around the bay, and that's great. limited transit because it's a holiday schedule, lighter schedules for bart, muni, caltrans and cal train does give you an option for a virtual celebration for martin luther king day observed. we look at the bay bridge. no backup, no metering lights and no slowing throughout contra costa county. >> thanks, mike. happening now, contra costa leaders are considering

welcome back. here's a look at the top stories on "today in the bay." first happening today a day of action on this mlk day for some bay area health care workers. hundreds of kaiser workers are planning a one-day strike after they say kaiser went back on its word by initially giving mental health workers a day off and then taking it back. kaiser permanente released a statement acknowledging the miscommunication they call it,

and say the holiday will be a scheduled paid day across the organization starting next year. workers plan to address other areas of concern on today's day of action. kids younger are being hospitalized than any other point during the pandemic. the u.s. was averaging 900 newly admitted children and teens with covid per day. that is six times higher than two months ago. the latest surge has been ae especially alarming for families with kids who are younger than 5 and that's the age group not eligible for vaccination. and then three covid testing sites will remain open today for families in the west contra costa school district. the sites open at 9:00 in the morning. covid having an impact on san josé police staffing. department sources tell nbc bay

area because of cases and exposures the department is having a tough time finding enough officers to patrol. the department's asking all officers to volunteer to work more time this week. in addition, starting one week from today, the department will require that all officers who are not currently on patrol to pull at least one patrol shift per week. as the nation celebrates the life and legacy of martin luther king jr., one organization is hosting a week full of events in his honor. the anti-police project organized events for eight straight years, and they say this year will be no different. this is video from last year. today's events will kick off with people meeting at the port of oakland and then a car caravan will wind through. el cerrito, a car parade starts at 10:00 and rally at
