restaurants in the bay area ask for proof of vaccination before you sit down. one restaurant in canada is now being ordered to temporarily close indoor dining because of something else. it was accepting photos of people's dogs instead of proof of vaccination or negative test results. what? investigators posed as customers to confirm the rumors were true. in a response of facebook, the restaurant in alberta calls the situation an unfortunate incident involving an underage hostess. right now, a sigh of relief for many parents. >> it is possible that we could have enough data. >> enough data for a vaccine for our youngest children. the reason health experts believe pfizer's vaccine for children under 3 could be available soon. and the latest covid surge is creating a historic backlog in asylum cases. the new system now being considered to help immigration

that all clears out. we're headed for the low to mid 60s for today. 64 in fremont, 60 in san francisco and sonoma today. a beautiful 63 degrees. we'll talk about more changes in our weather in the forecast coming up. more young people are testing positive for covid during the omicron surge, but there could be help coming for parents of the youngest children. >> brie jackson is live in washington. throughout this pandemic, of course, children under 5 have not been able to get vaccinated. that sounds like that could be changing soon. >> reporter: that's been especially tough, but chief medical advisor to the president dr. anthony fauci says he hopes that the fda will approve pfizer's vaccine for children 2-4 years old within the next month.

if approved, dr. fauci says children would likely need three shots. a pfizer vaccine clinical trial is underway for those young children at stanford. the need for three doses in that age group is normal and something that's been done in other vaccines as well. >> the vaccine trials that have been done so far in the under 5-year-old children have demonstrated strong safety, but just not the debris of antibody responses, especially in 2-4 year olds. it is hoped that a third dose in the under 5-year-olds will provide a strong antibody response. >> reporter: dr. maldonado confirmed stanford should give fda their findings by february march. a san jose pediatrician says she's seen more cases in the past three weeks than so far in the pandemic, including a good number of babies and newborns. but the vaccinated are faring

for that backlog. advocates say separating the courts from the justice department would speed up that legal process. part of oakland was shut down yesterday and now investigators say the package that was found near a flag pole was, in fact, a hoax device. it forced the evacuation of the federal courthouse. all of the evidence, including a note attached to what appeared to be a pipe bomb, is now in the hand of the fbi. a shakeup for schools in the north bay. the west sonoma school board has voted to buy-out the superintendent's contract following a year of budgetary issues and a deficit that led to the merger of two high schools last year. that decision triggered lawsuits, walkouts and a disagreement over what the new merged school should be called. a former berkeley school superintendent will take over until a permanent replacement can be found. relief is making its way to tonga finally after a devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami this weekend. new zealand sent planes carrying fresh water, first aid and communications equipment today.

u.n. leaders say more than 80% of the population was impacted by the volcanic eruption last weekend. more aid from australia and the u.s. will be arriving in the coming days. the eruption also triggered a tsunami warning and advisory for the west coast on saturday for several hours. if you're headed out the door, beware it is foggy out there. you can see the glow from the lights of the san mateo bridge toll plaza. when i was driving about three hours ago it was very foggy. we're going to checkkari hall i moment, but first let's check in with mike on how that could be affecting the drive. >> it's definitely an issue. we are looking at traffic flowing smoothly at the san mateo bridge.

meters lights are on. all lanes are currently blocked northbound 101 heading toward that skyway. there's a crash involving three vehicles. it sounds like there may be other complications. north 101 is jammed up from cesar chavez approaching east 80. the commute is slowing down, definitely foggy through the north bay. a big issue for the golden gate bridge, the richmond bridge and the bay bridge. it's reaching down as far south as palo alto and fremont. use caution.

fairfield today reaching 64 degrees. we see more changes in our forecast going into the weekend with high winds tomorrow and a bit of a cooldown in the forecast in a few minutes. a tesla driver charged in a deadly accident. your tax dollars are going toward this testing company, but a lot of folks are questioning the accuracy of the results.

a tesla driver whose vehicle was on auto pilot when it crashed into a car killing two people now faces vehicular

manslaughter charges. the l.a. county man is the first person to be accused of a felony after a fatal crash using the auto pilot system. news of the charge just came to light last week. he has pleaded not guilty and is out on bail. united airlines is reporting a smaller fourth quarter loss as it was helped by holiday travel. united says the omicron variant has affected bookings but believes the setback will just be temporary. it's scaling back its schedule in the first few months of the year, expecting to fly less in 2022 than it did in 2019. united says bookings for spring and beyond remain strong. proctor and gamble says it plans to increase prices on fabric care products. the company says price hikes

will come at the end of february. it says reasons for the increases are inflation and the supply chain issues we've been experiencing for months. proctor and gamble has already raised products on other products. you know the jingle, my ball low knee has a first name? >> i love it. where's marcus washington when you need him? >> we need marcus. >> trending this morning, lunch meat seems to be -- oscar myer just sold out of its bologna style face masks.

hayward up to 61 degrees. these temperatures are what we've felt the past few days. the difference is the dense fog this morning, but it does look to clear out later today and warm up nicely to 67 in ukiah. if you think it's cold here, check out what's happens across the rest of the country. bismarck right now 18 degrees below zero. even dallas this morning is well below freezing. this is a look at our wind gust forecast for tomorrow afternoon. we see 20 to 30 miles per hour winds. it may get even higher. where it's purple and red, winds may gust 45 to 50 miles per hour. those strong diablo winds picking up. usually during the summer time

when we get an event like this, we worry about fire danger. we still have enough moisture left in the vegetation, but it's going to dry things out even more. storm track still well to the north of us and we continue to see high pressure blocking any chances of rain over the next few days. it looks like this continues through at least then end of the month. into early february we may see an overall shift in our weather pattern, but it is completely normal to have a 20 to 30-day stretch of dry weather in the middle of our rainy season nap's what we're experiencing right now. temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. it will get a little bit cooler once we get those gusty winds. we'll see high temperatures for early next week in the low 60s, but still no chance of rain here. san francisco will be windy and a little bit warmer tomorrow, but we do see some upper 50s in the forecast for the middle of next week.

mike, fog really slowing a lot of people down and a couple of crashes too. >> yeah. approaching the scene use caution. i'm marking this as breaking news because of a traffic break which continues after ten minutes of initially calling for that break. you'll notice the backup has not grown. it starts at cesar chavez. you can exit the freeway north 101 at cesar chavez. it may be two or three crashes. i think it's the same crash, though, reported multiple times. in oakland westbound bay bridge at treasure island, a crash als

this morning, so i thought it was just me. turns out it's foggy for everyone. >> it's like that for everyone. take a look at the headlights. you can barely see them. this is fremont. that fog is going to linger through about 8:00. then we'll see it clearing out. we have a really nice day ahead. our temperatures reach into the low 60s, 64 in fremont. in los gatos expect a high of about 63. san francisco up to about 60 degrees. once that fog clears, nice day. we'll talk about all of the changes ahead and weekend plans coming up in a few minutes. developing right now, this is a live look in san jose where neighbors experienced a chaotic night that included a deadly police shootout with a suspected car thief. as you can see, officers right now are still on the scene and nearby streets are closed. it all happened after a car crash last night.

this is near the corner of heading street and park avenue in the rose garden district. police say the suspect was driving a stolen car in san jose, then attempted to carjack someone else in santa clara. that failed and he drove back to san jose. on heading is where he crashed into a car with two people inside. police say that stolen car caught on fire and the thief ran. one man who witnessed the crash say this is what authorities told him. >> he crashed the car into another car where there were two occupants. they got injured and sent to the hospital. he took off returning toward the corner of bureau court and heading, then he opened fire at the police officers. after that, he was shot and killed. >> it sounds like there was a lot of gunfire and shots fired

and maybe somebody was deceased. i don't know. it happened. it's random. >> a lot of shots. >> it sounded like a lot of shots. >> the suspected car thief later died at the hospital. the two victims in the other car were treated for minor injuries. no officers were injured in the gunfire. police in san mateo are investigating a shooting in the parking lot of hillsdale mall around 5:30 last night. one person was shot. so far there's no update on their condition, but the injuries, we're told, are not life threatening. police say there was no threat to the public. some health leaders believe we are approaching the peak of the omicron variant surge. there is another new concern. that is what other variants could bring. cierra johnson joins us leave. a lot of doctors are looking ahead to how we're going to navigate this new normal. >> reporter: that's right. good morning.

as we continue to navigate the fallout from omicron, those researchers already getting a leg up, looking at that next variant and how they will respond in the long-term to the coronavirus pandemic. nbc had a chance to speak with dr. smith, the head of infectious disease and global public health at ucsd. he tells us they're already exploring the next variant, which is pi. smith said there's a chance pi might be be as infectious or more infectious than omicron, yet deadly like delta. dr. smith says it's very likely we're going to need shots and boosters over our lifetime and the virus is not going away. how will that change the treatment? he says we'll treat covid more like the flu, which would mean creating new versions of the vaccine each year. >> we're going to figure out

exactly how many boosters somebody needs or what antibody level that's actually needed to protect ourselves. >> reporter: that doctor says it is also crucial that folks continue to get the boosters for those variants as a way to not only prevent the spread but also to protect vulnerable members of our society. live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." sonoma county leaders are trying to be transparent with what is now the most restricted covid related measure in the bay area. supervisors held a virtual public meeting to address the new limits on gatherings and the overwhelming conditions medical workers are facing there. hospitalization rates in sonoma county are higher than anywhere else in the bay area. the order bans gatherings of

more than 50 people indoors, more than 100 people outdoors. gatherings are also not allowed if they include more than 12 people at higher risk of severe illness for covid. the meeting went for hours reportedly without any resolutions. developing this morning, the search for a missing nurse who was last seen leaving during the middle of his shift at stanford medical center. search teams yesterday looked in the area near the dumbarton bridge in fremont for this man, 27-year-old michael o'dell. his roommate says he was last heard from during his overnight shift at stanford early tuesday. then his car was found on the dumbarton bridge in the eastbound lanes. the napa valley register reports napa city council approved retail cannabis sales.

that means anyone over 21 can purchase products without a medical use card. that measure still has to get a second reading before it gets the greening light. pg&e is free of the probation tied to its 2017 criminal conviction. federal officials have decided not to extend probation for its role in the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion. the blast killed eight people and destroyed an entire neighborhood. in his final summation, the judge overseeing the probation suggested pg&e should be split in two. the department of justice says prosecution for pg&e's potential roles in more recent wildfires will be left to the state and not the feds. it is so foggy out there. this is a live look at the san mateo bridge. you can see those brake lights. we hope you stay safe as you're

muni is running shuttles from bart. it's been one year since the presidential inauguration. kamala harris sits down with savannah guthrie for an interview after president biden predicted russia would invade ukraine and the u.s. would step in depending on that that invasion looks like. the white house clarifying those comments. but in a heated exchange this morning the vice president also clarified the president's promise, explaining the u.s. stance.

next week. then she's off to honduras for the inauguration of central america's first woman president. we have breaking news on the latest weekly jobless numbers. 286,000 people filed first time claims, about 50,000 more than the week prior and the most new claims since october. total claims surpassed 1.6 million. happening today, the start of one of the biggest events in the film industry, sundance. the event is virtual this year because of the pandemic for a second year. several bay area documentary filmmakers are set to make their debuts.

you may have noticed kari was out for a few days. that's because she and her family are adapting to a new normal at home. her daughter bella, who has autism, is suffering from severe food aversions and now has a feeding tube. she's back at home after a few days in the hospital. how is bella doing? >> she's smiling. she's healthy now. it was very rough there for a while. she one day just stopped eating. i was running back and forth to emergency rooms and doctors appointments and trying to figure out what's going on. in the end she did have to get a feeding tube to get some nutrition in. she is on the track toward some better health, but it will be a long road to get her to eat again hopefully in the future. >> we are so glad bella is doing better. so many of us didn't know you

were silently suffering. you were so incredibly strong. it wasn't until you posted on social media that you soon learned you weren't alone. a lot of families like yours dealing with feeding challenges like bella's. >> yeah. i was really struggling with whether or not to share what's going on in my personal life because i feel like we're all going through some mess.

it really gave me hope to know that i had my family praying for me. you do have people around you who do want to help if they knew what you were going through.

so i do suggest whether it's just picky eating or dealing with issues with a child or something you're going through personally, let other people around you know so they can help you. i was to the point of just about to break there. i didn't tell anyone. >> kari has shared some resources. we put those up on your screen. we'll put those up on social. we know now there are so many families in a similar boat. just say something, people are happy to help. >> we are so happy you're back. hopefully this can provide a little distraction for you getting back to the weather and doing what you love. >> i feel better being back here with you guys. also she's going back to school today. she's on the road to recovery. >> and she has her cute little backpack with her. >> yeah. that includes the pump and everything she needs for her feeding tube.

i just really have no idea what this even meant, but it's something that some families have to go through and it's not as bad as you would think, actually. so she's able to be mobile and just be a 5-year-old and do all the things she likes to do. she's getting ready to go to school this morning. it's starting out foggy in some spots. if you're getting the kids ready for school this morning, make sure they have something warm to wear am allow some extra time to get there. in some of those spots we've seen visibility down to zero at this point. so really dense fog in parts of the north bay. that's drifting around oakland as well. then getting a little bit clearer for the tri-valley and the south bay where we're headed for the mid 60s this morning.

san francisco reaching 60 degrees this afternoon. if you think it's cold this morning, take a look at how cold it is for parts of the upper midwest. minneapolis at 11 degrees below zero. that does not even factor in the windchill. that cold air is plunging all the way down to dallas where they're below freezing this morning. we have some of the warmest weather in the country. by tomorrow, it's going to be gusty. it shows the wind gusts in miles per hour, especially for the north bay, parts of the santa cruz mountains. we're going to get some really high wind gusts here with those diablo winds picking up. normally during the summer time when we get a wind event like this, we have worries of fire danger. that doesn't look to be the case right now because we do still have enough of that leftover moisture. still a lot of rain to the north. with the update of the drought monitor this morning, we do still have a severe drought here and we haven't seen any change

this morning with the update that just came out, but we are still on track to some more dry weather. it's just that reminder that we do need to continue to conservative water. it's going to be warm these next few days, windy tomorrow. the weekend is looking nice. slightly cooler for early next week. mike, that fog causing a lot of problems out there for the commute. >> definitely. because it's extending farther south than we often see. i can't show you the palo alto one across the bay because there's nothing really to see. it's just fog. here we see the fog and the glowing lights heading south or knot on 880.
