president's news conference marking his first year in office where he talked about the frustrations over covid, inflation and russia's possible invasion of ukraine. >> in a moment we're going to talk to vice president kamala harris. we begin with peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. president biden holding court for nearly two hours facing record inflation and sky-high covid cases insisting his first year report card will be pretty good despite a series of recent setbacks. the latest overnight, the efforts for voting rights protections hitting a brick wall in conference and making news acknowledging that he'll need to downsize his domestic agenda bill saying he can still get big chunks passed through congress. >> reporter: overnight, as president biden defended his first year in office, one of his major priorities stalled. >> the yeas are 52. the nays are 48 >> reporter: with voting rights blocked in the senate with all 50 republicans and 2 democrats. just hours after the president's one-year news conference were he detailed his handling of the covid crisis, amid criticism he did not ramp up testing sooner. >> should we have done more testing earlier? yes, but we're doing more now. >> reporter: casting his management of the pandemic as a

work in progress. >> i call it a job not yet finished. it will get better. we're moving toward a time when covid-19 won't disrupt our daily lives. >> reporter: on his legislative agenda, the president insists he's made enormous progress touting job growth and trillions of dollars for covid relief and infrastructure while other priorities, like his build back better plan have stalled despite democrats' control of congress. >> can you think of any other president who has done as much in one year? >> reporter: but to save one of his signature proposals, he'll scale back his social spending bill, conceding the child tax credit may be out blaming republicans for their resistance. >> think about this, what are republicans for? what are they for?

>> reporter: with the voting rights push hitting a dead end, president biden was asked whether this year's midterms would be fairly conducted and legitimate after many republican-led states enacted new voting restrictions. >> it all depends on whether or not we're able to make the case to the american people that some of this is being set up to try to alter the outcome of the election. >> reporter: kristen welker pressing the president about the frustrations of some black supporters that he's not delivered on voting rights. >> i've had their back. i've had their back my entire career. i've never not had their back. >> reporter: asked whether he's satisfied with vice president harris' leadership on voting rights and whether she'll be his running mate in 2024. >> yes and yes. >> still a new nbc news poll shows that just 43% of americans give president biden high marks, and 53% say he's done a poor job uniting the country. perhaps the most explosive topic, russia's new aggression toward ukraine with president biden predicting vladimir putin will invade. >> my guess is he will move in.

he has to do something. >> reporter: the president vowing severe consequences but also suggesting the level of punishment would depend on what an invasion looks like. >> it's one thing if it's a minor incursion and we end up fighting about what to do and not do. >> reporter: those comments sent white house aides scrambling to clarify before the news conference even ended. the national security spokeswoman quickly tweeted trying to erase any doubt about the u.s.'s firm position. and a half hour later jen psaki released a statement saying that president biden has been clear with the russian president. if any military forces move across the ukrainian border, that is a renewed invasion and it would be met with a swift, severe and united response from the u.s. and our allies. savannah? >> peter, thank you. joining us now the vice president of the united states, kamala harris. madam vice president, good morning. it's good to see you. >> good to see you, savannah, thank you. >> let's start right there with ukraine. the president was pretty clear, russia what it does.

it's one thing if it's a miner incursion and we end up fighting about what to do and what not to do. did the president give the green light to vladimir putin to take a bite out of ukraine. >> savannah, first of all, i will tell you that every morning i start my morning and day reading the presidential daily brief which contains classified information about threats to our national security and hot spots around the world. i'm often in the situation room with the leaders of our military and our intelligence community and, of course, the president of the united states. and on the subject of ukraine, i will tell you that the president has been very clear and we as the united states are very clear, if putin takes aggressive action, we are prepared to levy serious costs, period. and i will tell you that part of the posture that we have taken is grounded in the respect and the value we place -- >> i'm sorry to interrupt -- >> of ukraine, but we are -- >> i'm sorry to interrupt.

but it is less than clear. 30 minutes after the news conference, the white house press secretary had to actually clarify the president's remarks -- >> i'm being clear with you right now. and so if you're interested, i'll continue to be clear which tt we, we have had direct conversations through variou th our allies and partners, including our nato allies and partners. we are clear and have been clear for quite some time that our first approach and priority and preference is that these issues could be resolved diplomatically. we also have been clear and continue to be clear that if russian takes aggressive action, it will be met with severe cost -- >> is aggressive action -- just to be -- let's be clear. because there are 100,000

russian troops amassed at the border with ukraine and people there are hanging on the president's every word. is there any amount of land that russia could take that the president would allow, turn a blind eye to, not issue those, quote, severe sanctions he's been threatening for that massive full-scale invasion? >> our interpretation of any country, in this case russia and vladimir putin, denying or violating the sovereignty or integrity of ukraine will be interpreted as aggressive action and it will be met with a cost, a severe cost, period. >> the president said yesterday among other things that he thinks that putin probably will invade ukraine. later he said he wasn't sure. but he said he probably will go in. is that for all intents and purposes acknowledging that this threat of severe sanctions that the administration has made is

having no effect on putin, that he's actually not deterred by it? >> well, i'm not going to psychoanalyze president putin of russia. but i will tell you this, it is clear to us that the decision is probably in his hands and we are prepared to take appropriate action based on whatever he decides to do. >> the president also openly talked about division within nato countries and nato allies about what to do in the event of a russian incursion. how damaging is that when the message that's being preached overseas at this moment by our secretary of state and others is that nato stands united? >> i will tell you, and i think your audience knows, joe biden has been working as the former head of a foreign relations and as the former vice president and a senator in a role of leadership on foreign policy for years.

one of the things he values most is direct and consistent communication with our allies and partners around the world and in the year that i have been here as vice president, i have witnessed him continuously engaged in direct and honest conversations with our partners and allies and this is no exception. >> before i leave this, ukrainian officials reportedly heard these words from president biden with alarm. i know the white house tried to clarify it and clean it up afterwards. but with the damage done, you can't unring the bell. is vladimir putin likely to listen to a later statement from the white house press secretary or the words of president biden? >> i will repeat myself, and i'm vice president of the united states and the president and i work closely together and i know his position because he's been consistent in that regard. if vladimir putin and russia takes aggressive action, it will be met with a cost that will be severe. >> let's talk about another comment the president made.

he openly cast doubt on whether the 2022 midterm elections would be legitimate. he said it all depends which is astonishing to hear a president question whether our elections will be legitimate. we've heard it before, but not from this president. is he really concerned that we may not have fair and free elections? >> the president has been consistent on this issue and the issue at hand, the issue -- i was there last night in the chamber of the senate and the issue is that there are two bills, the john lewis voting rights act and the freedom to vote act, that have been the solution that has been offered to address the fact that around our country states have put in place laws that are purposely making it more difficult for the

american people to vote. laws which will be felt by at least 55 million americans regardless of their party affiliation, their race, their gender or geographic location -- >> those bills were -- the bills were debated and they didn't pass -- >> if i may finish -- >> but the specific question, if you don't mind, does he think now that these bills haven't been passed that the '22 midterms won't be legitimate or fair or free? >> let's not conflate issues. what we are looking at and the topic of so much debate last night was that we as america cannot afford to allow this blatant erosion of our democracy, and in particular, the right of all americans who are eligible to vote to have access to the ballot unfettered. that is the topic of the

conversation. let's not be distracted by the political gains mentioned when what is truly at stake, issues like whether americans with disability have the opportunity to vote by mail, whether a single parent has the opportunity with three kids in the backseat to vote by dropping off their ballot in a drop box instead of having to stand in line with those three kids for hours. these are the issues that are at stake -- >> and the president laid a lot of -- >> significant and pivotal issues in terms of our democracy. we had an extensive conversation about foreign policy, savannah. i met with prime ministers and presidents from around the globe, both partners and allies of ours, they are asking what is going on with voting rights in america because they look to us as a role model of what it means to be a democracy and they are monitoring to wonder and question whether there is an erosion of our democracy and, therefore, an erosion of one of the best role models of what a

democracy does and can do. >> speaking of democracy and politics, the president put a lot of blame yesterday on republicans for failure to get some of these key initiatives passed. you have a 50-50 tie in the united states senate. did the administration fail to temper its initiatives to meet political reality? in other words, should you have been more willing to compromise to try to get all democrats on board. these initiatives failed because democrats weren't united let alone republicans. was that an error as you look back on this year? >> when i look back on this year, i think about things like the bipartisan infrastructure law. administrations both democrat and republican have tried for years -- >> doesn't that show republicans are more willing to help if the -- >> please let me finish. they tried for years to do what the american people want and what the what the american people know is not an issue that should be thought of through a political lens, things like upgrading our roads and bridges, cleaning out the lead pipes of

>> i hope she got a big job. i'm impressed. we've got a lot to get to this morning, of course, in the wake of the sudden passing of bob saget, friends and fans and colleagues have been sharing countless stories of his remarkable kindness and generosity for the first time now, we're about to hear from the person who knew him best recently and maybe loved him the most there's a good competition for that. >> i would say so. kelly rizzo, what a wonderful, wonderful human being. i got a chance to share an emotional conversation with kelly while she says this is the most difficult time in her life, she also says it's also easy to know what her mission will be moving forward she says it's spreading bob's legacy of love and laugher. >> first of all, i want to say the entire country feels like we're holding your collective hands. i want to know just how you're doing today. >> well, i was just telling some of my family that today is a little bit -- there's a little bit more of a sense of calm.

i think you get to a point where your body will just physically not let you cry anymore or at least all day. still every second is horrible but you start to come to terms with it a little bit >> six years ago, bob saget and kelly rizzo, a food and travel blogger from chicago, met after connecting on instagram. married since 2018, friends say they had a love for the ages >> i'm watching you and your sitting in your home that you share with bob and i just wondered if you're remembering all the little things, if that pops up? >> it's impossible here not to but the support has been -- that has been the one silver lining from this, is the incredible outpouring of love and support, not only from just everybody that loves bob, but also for me and just from his friends and family, it's been -- i don't know how else i would be getting through this right now. >> the number of people who

loved bob is just -- i can't even quantify. i heard someone say that bob was an i love you guy. >> he put it all out there he told everyone that he loved, and i mean quite frankly anyone he met and even spent any time at all, he told them he loved them endlessly and tirelessly. and that was his entire message. if you knew bob and he loved you, you knew it there was never ever a doubt in your mind. i mean, even at his -- at his memorial, there were a lot of people there and every single person was pretty much like, oh, i talked to bob last week. i'm like, how did he have the time to talk to everybody and tell everybody that he loved them all the time? it was just amazing. >> we had an interview with mike young who is a comedian and dear friend of bob's. he said something that struck me

he said, most comedians after a stand-up gig, they catch the last flight home he said, not bob he wanted to catch the first flight home. and he said that your love was perfect. >> sorry that was what was always so special. every time he would be out of town he would always try to -- he would -- he would work so hard and he -- you know, he loved to sleep in. but when he was away, he would always try to -- he would still wake up, go to bed at 2:00 and wake up at 4:00 so he could be on the 6:00 a.m. flight so he could come home and we could spend time together. that's why this is so heartbreaking, but at the same time i know that we -- every second that we had together was

just maximized to the fullest and we absolutely just -- there was nothing left unsaid and nothing left on the table. those are things that i'm just trying to hold on to, you know >> i feel like everyone felt like they knew bob because everyone grew up watching him or young kids now are watching him again on tv. but who was the bob saget at dinner when there was no audience >> it was still the same he tried to make everybody feel special and happy and comfortable and it's funny, our dry cleaners, he has -- i always joke that he has a deeper relationship with them than anybody. they loved him and he loved them. his constant message was just treat everybody with kindness because he had gone through so much in his life and he knew how hard life could be and so he always was just so

kind and loving to everybody and he was just -- he was just such a -- he was just the best man i had ever known in my life. he was so kind and wonderful and everybody that was in his life knew it and even anybody that would just causally meet him was like, wow, this is a special guy. >> and he was yours. and by all accounts, he was living his best life did you think he was feeling okay during all this time? >> all i'll say is that he was very happy and he was just thrilled to be back out on the road and he was also very sensitive and just all the weight of everything going on in the world right now. it was just weighing very heavily on him and that's why he felt more compelled than ever to make people laugh and bring people together. and he did it up until the very last moment. >> we've all lost someone in our

life and sometimes you hang on to the last text, the last conversation, the last connection is that the case with you? >> i'm just very grateful that it was all i love you so much. i think i said i love you dearly, and he said i love you endlessly and he said i can't wait to see you tomorrow and then, you know, it was just all very -- it was just all love >> wow that is beautiful, kell. is there anything that you feel comfortable sharing about what it was like, were you able to speak at the funeral >> i don't think i'll get too much into it, but i did speak and it was just -- the whole thing, as painful as it was, beautiful to be surrounded by so many people who loved him and who loved each other i can't even verbalize the level of support i'm so grateful for it. >> one of the things that he was

passionate about was scleroderma. nobody said, hey, go donate in bob's honor. >> they did it. >> he was dedicated to finding a cure to scleroderma, the autoimmune disease that took his sister's life. bob raised more than $26 million for the srf in his lifetime. >> he had three life works, one was his children, next was comedy, and then the srf he spent over 30 years tirelessly working so hard to try to find a cure for the disease. that's why anything i can do to help keep that legacy going and help with the srf because it meant so much to him. >> i'm sitting here and reflecting and sitting with you, bob spent his life and united people by being himself.

he wasn't trying in his passing, he's doing it again. >> i've never seen anything like this it's unbelievable. the -- just the outpouring, but the consensus over all of what an amazing person he was, whether people knew him or didn't know him because one way or another, he was in your living rooms since the '80s or you went to shows, whatever it is he felt like he was everyone's dear friend. nobody will ever be like bob >> and i think he just kind of lived his life unafraid which is what struck me he found love again in his 60s he told his friends, i love you. he was back on stage, like the guy was fearless and i think that's what struck me about it. and she loved all parts of him even on stage, he had that raunchy side, but that was part of him he wasn't afraid. >> he's truthful

invested in them he really cares. he really cares. >> but, kristen, your obsession with the "dateline" thing, the murder mystery, the whodunit is on full display here you got this script from your friends who are also equally as obsessed in that genre as you are. but the title of the show, hoda, is very long it's 18 -- "the woman in the house across the street from the girl in the window." netflix wanted to shorten that up but you fought for that long title. why? >> i said no way here's a little tip of the hat this show is definitely -- it's a satirical psychological drama. it's based on all of these psychological novels that were written for women, by women. and, you know, the formula is always the same.men. and, you know, the formula is always the same. she

she drinks too much, she might be mixing it with pills, she thinks she sees a murder, no one believes her there's so much formula to it that we thought it was about time somebody poked fun at it. we're hoping that the title will tip you to the fact that we are making fun of the genre, the entire time. and i think -- i didn't know i had been waiting to do my best sort of bad acting my whole career for this show >> you know what, some people when they watch these datelines, or yours, this is a murder mystery, people still have to figure out whodunit. some people can figure it out from the beginning are you the person who can crack that nut quickly >> no, no, no. i believe everyone and i take everyone at their word i'm like, but he was so sincere. the only thing i use, it's always the husband, unfortunately. but in this one, in "the woman in the house," i could love to know if anyone can predict based on the first episode whodunit. because i know these writers

when i was getting the breakdowns, there was no way that i predicted what happened because, again, every time something suspenseful happens, it's a little bit poking fun at it i'm kind of sure my mom is still going to think this is just a completely psychological drama movie. but there's little tips of the hats she's an artist and they're like, you're so good and she's always lamenting about that. you look at her pictures, she's very average. >> the show looks so good. you laugh. it is satirical. but it's also kind of frightening. is it hard to sort of be all things to all people you pull it off really well. >> yeah, that was one of my main problems is i was like, is it -- i'm trying to play it sincere, but is it funny? and they kept telling me, yes, just play it completely straight everything around us is funny. when she pours her wine, the prop department filled the bottles that were opaque to the

exact surface tension line so i never looked when i was pouring the line and i was dump completely and it would always be at service tension. look at all the corks. i feel like i gave a sincere performance and it ended up being just really comedic. >> you got up at 5:00 in the morning to sit and talk to us. did we see your husband wandering around to? >> if he did, we had a question about hiccups on social media. how did that start how did you end it >> i think he's gone back up with the girls he was helping me with a tech problem. we don't know how it started our theory is that he ate too many chocolates. he ate a half a box of chocolate. and chocolate is an acid reflux agitator we tried everything. i had him shooting cups of apple cider vinegar, breathing into a bag, meditating. and he was getting in the car to
