. good morning. wintery mess. the carolinas cleaning up this morning after another storm dumped several inches of snow and more freezing rain. a plane even skidding off the runway in north carolina. and now millions from the deep south to the northeast dealing with unusually brutal cold temperatures. we'll have the full forecast. the trump papers, the january 6th committee now pouring over hundreds of pages of documents that the former president had fought to keep out of their hands.

reportedly among them, a draft of an executive order that would have allowed the defense secretary to seize voting machines after the 2020 election. what this means for the investigation surrounding last year's attack at the capitol. breaking news, arnold schwarzenegger's accident, the terminator said to be doing okay this morning after he was involved in a car crash in los angeles, sending one woman to the hospital with serious injuries. those stories plus rail car robberies, growing concern around los angeles with thieves plundering trains, stealing thousands of packages and leaving a huge mess behind. a scene looking a lot like the old west as investigators try to put an end to the crimes. welcome to "today," and thank you so much for joining us on this saturday morning. peter good to be with you. i don't know about you. you but i had to run to my car today. it is freezing out here. >> we showed up with several more layers. 4 degrees, the wind chill where we are near the capitol in washington. we're covering that and other stories, including further signs of hope in the battle over coronavirus cases. we're going to look back at the late louie anderson's life as fans and friends remember the legendary comedian who passed away on friday after a battle with cancer. we are going to have more on all of that coming up, but we want to begin with our top story that a lot of us are living. this latest round of winter weather. snow hitting the carolina's once again and now the unbearable

cold impacting millions. somara theodore is tracking this one for us. what are you watching this morning? it's bitter in a lot of places. >> down right cold out there. i will say that storm has pulled out, so that's the good news. now we're dealing with the reinforcing cold air. you can see the air mass over areas like the upper midwest into the great lakes. right now temperatures in buffalo 2 degrees, a wind chill of minus 9. pittsburgh the actual air temperature is negative 2. here in washington d.c. we are down to a wind chill of 4 degrees. it's cold and getting colder. keep that winter coat out. i know we had a lot of fluctuations at the beginning of winter but keep it on deck. we are looking at single digits in minneapolis, chicago 19 degrees by tuesday. nashville, 41 by tuesday. it's only getting colder. you can see the storm moving

out. a lot of our friends in the carolinas may be waking up to those winter watches and warnings expired. but please be careful because roads are still slick and dangerous. stick around we're talking about some areas of the country seeing snow this weekend. >> we are keeping our coats, gloves, scarves all of it on deck. we'll get the rest of your forecast in just a little bit. thanks. to the situation overseas. overnight the first shipment of military aid from the u.s. arrived in ukraine in hopes of deterring a russian invasion. it comes a day after the secretary of state met with top russian officials and urged them to stand down. matt bradley is watching all of this for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. negotiations in geneva between the u.s. and russia continued right up until yesterday and now they'll set to spill into next week. even if diplomacy has reached an

impasse, both sides are still busy arming themselves and bolstering their borders. today u.s. help is on the way. as the first shipment of 200,000 pounds of lethal american military aid arrived in ukraine overnight. backing up a country bracing for war. near ukraine's border with russia, the tension is palpable. >> on the edge of something very terrible and scary. >> if someone tries to take our freedom again, we will fight back. >> reporter: just over the border, more than 100,000 russian troops are practicing. ready to invade ukraine. this weekend, president joe biden huddling with security advisers at camp david after top russian and american diplomats met in geneva friday, scrambling to stop a war. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken held negotiations with

his russian counterpart. >> if russia wants to begin to convince the world it has no aggressive intent toward ukraine, a very great place to start would be by de-escalating. >> reporter: sergei lavrov pressing russia's demand, that ukraine never be allowed to join nato. the russians say europe and the u.s. are aggressors. our concerns are not about imaginary and real threats, stuff nobody is hiding. sending hundreds of military instructors. both sides agreed to keep talking even as military equipment keeps flowing in. russia sending fighter jets to belarus. a rivalry reminiscent of the cold war that could soon turn very hot. guys, there's a big, big problem for the white house. even as they're trying to keep russia at bay, they're still trying to manage expectations.

the biden administration has already kind of tied their own hands by announcing they won't be sending u.s. troops to defend ukraine. so even if this disploem si fails, if there is war, it's going to be difficult for them to put pay for any threats they actually make against russia. >> thank you. escalating tensions there and challenges at the white house as well. members of the january 6th committee investigating the attack at the capital now have hundreds of pages of documents from former president trump's time in office. they include the draft of an executive order that would have allowed the administration to seize voting machines after the election. josh letterman is at the white house with more on this. josh, good morning to you. >> reporter: kristen, good morning. the former president's lawyers fought for months in court to shield these documents from the committee. claiming executive privilege, but it didn't work. this morning, the january 6th committee combing through former president trump's papers.

more than 700 pages that mr. trump tried to block them from getting. the national archives handling them over less than two days after the supreme court gave the green light. >> i would say the supreme court decision is probably the single biggest day of the investigation so far. >> reporter: the committee sought his calendars, emails with state election officials and a draft of an executive order on election integrity. politico obtaining that document which would have directed the military to seize voting machines. mr. trump never signed the order. this as multiple investigations swirling around mr. trump on his inner circle. new york's attorney general laying out evidence she's gathered on mr. trump and his children, as she investigates the family's business practice. rudy giuliani and sidney powell subpoenaed by congress. and ivanka asked to testify about what she heard and saw on

january 6th. it's unclear whether she'll cooperate. and now a georgia prosecutor requesting a special grand jury to investigate whether trump committed crimes in that state's election. at issue, the post election phone call pressuring georgia's secretary of state, brad raffensperger. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes. which is one more than we have. because we won the state. >> reporter: this morning, mr. trump defending himself, insisting i didn't say anything wrong in the call. but brad raffensperger, a republican, saying he'd be willing to testify before a grand jury. >> we already have cooperated. any information they've requested, we've sent it to them. >> let me ask you about another headline you're tracking this morning, a texas man is under arrest for making threats towards georgia election officials? what can you tell us?

>> reporter: prosecutors have charged him with a crime, saying on the day before the january 6th attack, while georgia was holding the special election for u.s. senate, stark posted on craigs list offering $10,000 to quote exterminate elections officials in georgia. clark wrote it's our duty as patriots to put an end to the lives of the traitors. attorney general merrick garland said protecting election officials from threats is a top priority. this is the very first case brought by a new elections threat task force that the justice department created last summer but likely not the last. the task force has gotten more than 850 reports of threats to election workers across the country. >> disturbing. josh letterman, thank you for that report. this morning while covid cases are still hovering around 1 million new infections each day, experts say they're seeing signs the wave is beginning to

peak, at least in some cases. while the cases seem to be easing on the east coast, hospitals in the west are still overcome by a omicron. kathy park is outside a hospital in new york city with more. good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you. for the first time in week est we're seeing a lower number in the positive rate here, fell under 10% on friday. while we're seeing improvement in other parts of the country, hospitals are being gripped by omicron and they're asking for help. this morning, cautious optimism with covid cases falling in the northeast, including new york, where they've seen a 66% drop in two weeks. >> we have been waiting for this moment. we are finally trending the direction we want to go down, and that is downward, downward, downward. >> reporter: despite signs of improvement, the rest of the country isn't moving at the same

pace. based on nbc analysis, covid hospitalizations are up 35% in the past two weeks and two dozen states are still reporting a spike in infections. in arizona, health experts say omicron is raging and its peak is still weeks away. >> it is finding people very easily because it's so contagious, it's as contagious as measles almost. >> reporter: in st. louis hospitals pushed to the limit and federal aid is on the way. >> this is the first time that the health care systems have requested help. >> reporter: and a hospital in san diego, patients are overflowing into field hospitals. >> we're sending somebody to the icu or seeing somebody pass away every shift, every day. >> reporter: hopeful news on friday. the cdc released new data that show that boosters are 90% effective from severe illness against omicron. >> protection is highest for

those who are up-to-date with their vaccination. meaning those who are boosted when they are eligible. >> reporter: another reminder to help put the surge behind us. and according to the cdc roughly 86 million americans are eligible to receive a booster. but less than half of the population has received one. and while we are starting to see an eaing up of cases in had some parts of the country, the agency is still recommending you mask up in public spaces even if you are fully vaccinated. >> kind of nice to get good news on covid this morning. kathy park thank you. we have breaking news to tell you about this morning. a new york city police officer was killed and another critically wounded friday night. police say 22-year-old office jason rivera was shot and killed when he and several officers answered a call about an argument between a woman and her adult son. after they spoke to the mother,

the son opened the door and began firing. rivera has been on the job just over a year. four new york city police officers have now been shot in the last four days. mayor adams calling it an attack on the city. in los angeles, arnold schwarzenegger was hurt in an accident. police say he was not hurt. after four vehicles collided. tmz captured photos of arnold schwarzenegger at the scene, that was his suv on top of the prius. it was about a mile from his home. the cause of the accident is under investigation. fans of the comic louie anderson are smiling in morning. steve patterson looks back at his life and career. >> louie anderson. >> reporter: for four decades louie anderson added a snarky,

>> what i like to say, down right disrespectful. that's what this is. that chill is setting up shop and to think it's going to be colder in some spots as we head through the week ahead. for now, headed deep down into the south. we have 7 million people waking up this morning to different types of freeze alerts and expecting temperatures in parts of mississippi to be as low as 20 degrees. keep that in mind, freeze warnings from lake charles to new orleans to biloxi. cold for everyone in the south and southeast. we have showers in florida, a few snow showers so we have another winter system that's going to be impacting the upper midwest and parts of the great lakes. we'll talk about that later. the bitter cold, of course, in the northeast. and the santa ana winds. wait until you see some of the wind g our skies in san francisco. we continue to monitor the windy conditions especially for the

so far a hundred acres have already burned. stay with us with the latest of this winds. we'll continue to tweet updates. happening now, thousands of people in the east bay are without power this morning, berkeley police say people were experiencing power outages and downed power lines because of the winds. this is a look at the pg&e outage map. you can see the orange where the people are impacted. pg&e says more than 5,000 people are without power. power should be restored later this morning. for the latest on those high winds, let's check in with vianey arana. >> we have the threat of the lightest winds that could change the direction of the fire making it continue to be direction. wind warnings are in ffect in the highlighted areas. the rest of the bay area could expect for see some pretty soft

speaking figuratively, police are investigating the threat. police in rural pennsylvania are asking residents to look out for monkeys on the loose. that's after a truck carrying about 100 monkeys crashed into a dump truck on friday. no people were injured but authorities say four monkeys were escaped, two have been contained in a small area but two others remain on the loose in frigid temperatures. the monkeys were being driven to a lab in florida. to a crime spree in los angeles that has implications that stretch across the country with thieves ransacking trains stealing millions of dollars worth packages. guad has more. >> reporter: train robberies have long been a hollywood staple. but in 2022, they're still happening. >> i see what everybody is seeing and asking myself what is going on. it looks like a third world

country, these images. >> reporter: these tracks nord stream downtown los angeles covered in everything. >> it's awful, people are expecting to receive things that are never coming and paid money for this stuff. >> reporter: union pacific said rail thefts in los angeles county have more than doubled in the past year with a spike in the holiday season. october saw a 356% increase compared to the year before. it's estimated 40% of the nation's maritime imports come through los angeles ports. the billions of dollars of goods then delivered nationwide by train. >> if thefts increase so does the cost of transportation, the cost of manufacture, which impacts the consumer. >> reporter: the railroad is responsible for policing the tracks. they're making arrests but say the authorities aren't doing enough to prosecute.

the los angeles district attorney saying they're doing what they can to prosecute. union pacific denied they reduced staffing, saying it has increased security in recent months. california's governor calling it the work of organized groups. pledging more money and resources to tackle the issues. >> we're stepping things up. we're not sitting back and we're not condoning what's happening here. >> reporter: another challenge for a supply chain already under strain. nbc news. >> the images are just staggering. miles of those boxes. it's unbelievable. >> no doubt. you get a sense there have been a lot of challenges during the pandemic, this appears to be another of that. you hope it's something the police can catch up to. clearly they are behind trying to chase these guys. >> we'll keep our fingers crossed for that.

we want to check in with somara who's back with a check of the weather. >> it's cold on the east coast and we're tracking other weather out west. 23 million of our friends in california and nevada this morning are waking up to various wind alerts. look at the gusts, toward acton 57 mile per hour wind gusts, lake arrowwood, 45 miles an hour. the higher elevations could see 80 mile an hour wind gusts. the santa anas could cause power outages. high wind warnings in los angeles, palm springs up to sacramento and san francisco. we have another winter storm moving through this weekend. take a breath, south and north carolina, you get a reprieve. this one is for the up every midwest. we have the arctic front bringing snow to the great lakes, that starts this had evening, dry through the great

lakes sunday, impacting areas like chicago, illinois. we could see snow here in washington d.c. as far as the totals go, ranging from 1 to 3 inches throughout. but as you get closer to the lake line, we are seeing higher totals anywhere from 6 to 8 inches. that's a look at the weather across the country. kristen, back to you. we are to our forecast live shot of san francisco there. however we are still monitoring the gusty winds especially for some of those higher elevation areas that wind warning will remain in effect until 11:00 a.m. we expect to see some winds. daytime highs will be in the mid-60s. 65 in san jose. 66 in concord. >> that's your local forecast, now kristen, back to you.

planned parenthood and their local partners are opening a new center to ease the burden on patients, providing transportation, food, lodging and cash assistance. abortion opponents nationwide are gaining strength, in just the past year they introduced nearly 600 restrictions and were able to pass more than 90 into law. reproductive advocates are putting their resources into states. while they wait for the supreme court. >> is that what you're attempting to do? you shore up the states where access is available to make up for states it's not? >> yes. focused on bolstering operations in regions that are critical for patients. >> reporter: reproductive rights groups are also expanding access for pregnancies up to 10 weeks. meantime, friday, antiabortion activists took to the national

maul for the march for life. hopeful when they gather this time next year, roe versus wade will have been overturned. >> pray like you never prayed before that the supreme court will have the moral courage to do what is right. >> reporter: the high court's verdict, expected to come next june, would impact half of u.s. women of reproductive age. about 36 million. another milestone for a divisive and emotional issue. >> clearly this is a divisive issue. where to americans stand on it? >> a poll shows two-thirds of the population are against the supreme overturning roe. 40% said they want more restrictive legislation in their states. that clear stark divide, one that could play out at the peak of midterm season. >> great report on an important issue.

omicron. kathy park is outside of a hospital in new york with more on this. good morning to you, kathy. >> reporter: kristen, good morning to you. we are seeing numbers trend in the right direction. especially in portions of the northeast, including new york. covid cases dropped 66% in just the past two weeks. and just friday, the positivity rate fell under 10%. something that we haven't seen in quite some time. while we are seeing these improvements, the rest of the country not necessarily on the same track. for example, in st. louis, missouri hospitals there are being inundated with covid patients, dealing with staffing shortages. they're asking for federal assistance. in san diego, california, they're dealing with an omicron surge and leaning on the help of field hospitals. but there is hopeful news released from the cdc yesterday when it comes to boosters they are 90% effective at omicron hospitalizations but it's important to note roughly 86

million americans are eligible for the boosters but less than half of the population has received that extra dose. kristen, back to you. >> kathy park in new york. thank you. new details this morning in the investigation into the death of gabby petito. the fbi announced friday that her fiancee, brian laundrie, admitted killing her in a notebook discovered near his body in a florida swamp. investigators also confirmed that brian laundrie had sent text messages to intentionally deceive people that the 22-year-old was still alive after he strangled her in late august. her body was found three weeks later in a wyoming campground. a frightening close call in florida this week caught on camera. a man out on his patio, pushes back a black bear who jumps over a small gate to attack his dogs. look at that. he had been hanging out with his dogs when the bear came close to them all. he told our nbc affiliate that
