of smoke were going off into the ocean. today we'll see a shift. the national weather service released a 24 hour peak winds. look at mount diablo, 71 miles per hour and oakland at 60 miles per hour and half-moon bay at 55 miles per hour. i will talk more details of advisories and your extended outlook come up. >> vianey, we'll see you about 15. happening now more than 5,000 people in berkeley and piedmont are out of power. pg&e hopes to have power restored later this morning. back to the breaking news in big sur, the wildfires is burning along the coast. you can see if flames burning along the ridge there. the chp shuts down highway 1,

south of carmel. there are mandatory evacuations for people living in that area. this is a video taken by someone racing to escape the fire. this is in the palo colorado canyon, it is close to big sur, a few miles from the bixsy ridge. the american red cross has opened a shelter evacuees at carmel middle school. we'll continue to tweet updates and will continue to do so. follow us @nbcbayarea. happening today, 60,000 covid kits are handed out. today ian cull is moving you forward explaining that you may

have a chance to get a test. >> reporter: there is relief on the way for many frustrated south bay residents trying to track down at home covid tests. the county will be giving them out next week. >> starting tomorrow, 60,000 at-home antigen tests will be able for direct distribution over the next week. >> reporter: santa clara county is requiring appointments for pick up. you have to sign up at sccfree test.org. looked at every appointment to pick one up was booked. >> while we are starting to see a decrease in the omicron surge. it is important to know that our prevalence of circulating covid in the community is still very

high. >> reporter: those tests come from i-health. >> it shows you the ongoing dedication of our county's work force to ensure the health and safety of our community despite this ongoing disaster. >> reporter: you can keep checking back if there is a cancellation or a spot will open. you can continue to order from the federal government supply. it is available through that website. county fishes say they're going to try to get more of those coveted tests to give out to residents. ian cull, nbc bay area news. teachers in oakland can vote to strike, this after the teachers union in the district were trying to reach an agreement before midnight last night. teachers are demanding weekly pcr testing at all school sites. high quality masks for teachers and students and more staff. the district handed out kn 95

masks for students. parents and students we spoke with are worried about that alarming staff shortages. >> who is teaching our children right now? if there is no teachers available, there is not enough staff available. >> i want parents to be able to send their kids to school and not have to worry that they may come back with covid. >> the alameda county office of education is weighing in. the superintendent says she dispatched 55 employees from her office to various districts struggling with teachers sick-out. san francisco will be packed today with thousands of pro-life advocates for the 18th annual walk for life. it begins in the civic center plaza at 12:30. marchers will walk down at market street and finish at the

embarcadero. it is still the nation's second largest pro-life demonstration in the country after the one in washington, d.c. which also will be held today. there will also be a counter protest in the city that begins at 11:30 at the phillip burton federal building. people continue to come together to mourn the death of michelle go, she was pushed into the platform of the oncoming train. the suspect has a history of mental illness was arrested. michelle go lived in new york but her home was in fremont. here is cheryl hurd. >> this moment is important. we need to recognize michelle's life. >> reporter: many people who came here didn't know michelle go. they felt it was important to be

here. >> the fact she did graduate from the high school my kids went and she grew up in fremont. it makes it closer to home. >> reporter: she moved to new york many years ago establishing a career and volunteering and focusing on people with mental health problems. this past weekend someone pushed her in front of a subway train in times square. >> michelle does not deserve this and especially with the last two years of asians hate crime rising. >> when we see this happening time and time again, we need to speak up against this. >> reporter: it is unclear why the person turned themselves in for the crime allegedly attacked go. the suspect has a record of mental health problem from new york to san francisco. people have been coming together to remember go. >> my comments are personal. this is personal.

>> reporter: dr. steven chang was her doctor as a child. >> michelle stood for love and that's the most important word here today. what did she bring to the community. >> reporter: her parents did not attend go's celebration of life but they sent a message they wanted everyone to hear. >> they don't want people to focus how she died and the tragedy around that. they want people to focus about how she lived and what she lived for. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, today in the bay. >> there is another candlelight vigil tonight in fremont at central park pavilion. we have new details of the nationwide covid testing company that's under investigation for mishandling people's tests.

it is closing its doors in definitely. our investigative unit exposed this story two weeks ago. soon after the federal government got involved. the company is called center for covid control. people claimed the company and its lab failed to deliver results and delivered inaccurate results or delivered results when customers were not tested. the company paused its operation last week. the company announced all of its location will stay close. on your saturday morning, we have much more ahead on "today in the bay," when testing for covid, do you do a nasal or oral swab a study shows which is more effective when detecting the virus. the latest conditions of the humidity and shift in wind, coming up in my full forecast, stick around.

developing news of wildfires along the big sur coast, mandatory evacuations are underway. the chp has shut down highway 1. crews across monterey county are on the scene, hundreds of acres are burned. a fifth person from the bay area has been arrested in connection with the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol.

52-year-old kenneth armstrong has been charged with four federal offenses. they include trespassing and disorderly conduct and picketting at the capitol. he faces a one year in jail and $100,000 fines if convicted. he was arrested the thursday and he's now out on $10,000 bond. we are getting more information about the deadly shooting in san jose's rose garden neighborhood. san jose police say the man shae shot and killed was a wanted felon who fired at officers first. 32-year-old robert seth carter had five felony arrest warrants and was on probation for battery when he stole a car in san jose on wednesday. the police helicopter picked up surveillance and followed the stolen car into santa clara and back into the rose garden area.

carter opened fire at several officers. they released these pictures to show officers were justified in shooting him. >> four officers in total fired their weapons. carter continued the handgun and struck more than once by the officers' rounds. >> reporter: the handgun was a ghost gun. we are following developing news in los angeles, former governor arnold schwarzenegger involved in a car crash nearhis home in brentwood. his large suv rolled over to a prius, four cars were involved. we are told the former governor is okay. the woman was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

law enforcement at the scene saying it was arnold schwarzenegger's fault for turning left at the arrow that was still red. covid booster shots are highly effective at keeping you out of the hospital. the cdc released a number of studies and one of them looked at hospitals and emergency department from august through january. they found that a third dose of the pfizer and moderna vaccines reduced the odds of hospital and emergency room visits by 94%. that was during the delta variant. that drops a bit to 82% against the omicron variant. despite those high percentages, the cdc's data revealed fewer than half of all americans that are eligible boosters have received one. if you ever used those at-home rapid covid tests, we are getting some guidance which is the best way to swab yourself. in your nose or throat?

a study found that nasal swabs are far more effective. earlier this month, doctors tested both techniques, while experts say lab tests are the best way to detect the virus. the nasal swab still has 98% sensitivity compares to 49% hap nation's largest pharmacy chain, cvs, will be closing six of their stores. 581 on market street, 731 and market, 351 california, 500 pines and 400 sutter. in a statement cvs says prescription will be transferred to other stores.

last night's gusty conditions. we are hearing mix information of how many acres have been burned so far? we know 215 acres have been burned. it is been several hours. there is going to be more but the good news is we are going to see the winds diminished. we are monitoring a shift in the wind direction. yesterday a lot of the wind is from the south, it was cushioning a lot of the smoke in towards the ocean. now with shift from the northeast could potentially put some of that smoke up on the peninsula and monterey as well. we saw a better recovery of humidity over night. any time we see a shift in the wind, the reason there is a concern for it because it changes the direction o the fire. we'll keep a close eye on that. as far as wind warning for us here in the bay area a little closer to the north. it is still under a wind warning

at least until 11:00 a.m. the rest are expiring at 11:00 a.m. it is still gusty out there. how gusty did we get in 25 miles per hour p look at mount diablo, 71 miles per hour. oakland at 60 miles per hour. you can imagine with these wind gusts triggered a lot of power outages. half-moon bay at 65 miles per hour. wind gusts right now still pretty gusty up in napa and concord area which is why we are expecting for that to linger around until 11:00. notice what happens into the afternoon, we finally begin to see those winds fall below the 10 miles per hour. as far as relative humidity, still pretty dry in santa rosa and napa area. we recover nicely through the south. forecasted highs for today. we'll be in the 60s, 65 degrees in san jose.

63 in oakland and as of right now, things are quiet when it comes to the rain. no rain insight. not for the next several days. high pressure will continue to dominate. that's going to set us up for another seven-day forecast for our dry weather here in the bay area. >> we need the rain but those sunshine looks beautiful. vianey, thanks, we'll be right back.

wind. up in the north bay and high elevation is still gusty at times. i will get to our 24 hours peak of wind gusts in a second. it is a calmer start compares to the wind. let's talk about the big sur wildfires. current wind speeds right now in the south is 5 miles per hour. a lot of that smoke is going off into the ocean. right off into the coastline area but today with the shift potentially in the wind could bring up some of the smoke up the peninsula and the monterey area. we are monitoring that closely. any time there is a shift in the winds could make a shift in the fire. you can see highlighted areas still seeing gusty winds through there. i will take you through the timing all of that coming up in my full forecast. kira. as vianey talking about those high winds impacting

power. more than 5,000 people in berkeley, piedmont and oakland are without power this morning. this is a look at the pg&e outage map. you can see orange, green and red where people are impacted. berkeley police say there are some downed power lines because of over light winds. pg&e hopes to restore their power this evening. the colorado fire burning along the coast. cal fire confirmed 1500 acres have burned over night. you can see the flames burning along that ridge there. the chp has shutdown highway 1, this is south of carmel. there are mandatory evacuations for people living in the area. we got this video from someone racing to escape that neighborhood and that fire. this is in the palo colorado canyon, you can see on this map, it is close to big sur and not far from the bixby bridge of 4 files of a drive.

good morning, what a great shot, our weather is much calmer and winds are starting to diminished, we got some advisories to warn you about. the latest update of the big sur fire, let's take a look right

now. cal fire's latest information, 5% containment. humidity does tend to recover over night and we are going to see right now the winds are pretty light down to this area near the monterey county as well. a change in the wind shift later this afternoon could drive some of that smoke up the peninsula. national weather service did tweet out a fascinaing discussion of this fire and the impact of california drought. we had a successful rain and you are thinking we had a lot of rain in november and october and why are we having a fire in january. as jeff was talking about last night, any fire can quickly turn dangerous if it is a large enough ignition and the long-term impact of the droughts are showing themselves. go ahead and check it out. i invite you to do it. i retweeted from the national weather service. wind warnings will be in effect until 11:00 a.m. i want to take a look at the 24

hours peak winds. mount diablo saw winds of 71 miles per hour. look at oakland, those windy conditions really impactful last night and when are they going to diminished? we'll see this continue to decrease this afternoon as you look at the time stamp out here. everything down below the south, i should say the north bay was allowed to expire when it came to those advisories. look at what happens to the wind. we start to drop down below the 25 miles per hour range. we saw a nice boost and humidity over night, we could be doing better up in the north bay. we are still less than 30%. forecasted highs, mostly sunny. 63 degrees in oakland, 55 in san jose. 66 in concord, we do not have any rain in sights.
