in livermore during the season, the 49ers and also the green bay packers. but even with a spot and the championship game on the line, they were able to keep the peace. >> they just enjoy the camaraderie. we've been doing this for so many years and we've had lots of these games together. >> we always have a good time. it's the good time tavern. we like to roll like that. >> reporter: the owners have been partners and best friends in business together for 17 years, and on game day, especially during the playoffs, when the two teams are going head to head, 49er fans and green bay cheese heads share glasses of spirits and the spirit of competition under one roof. >> it's a beautiful thing we can come together, especially in the bay area. it's unusual that you see a home and hub where green bay fans can come. >> reporter: they had a lot to cheer about after an opening possession touchdown. but thanks to a stingy defense
7:04 am
and a blocked field goal, the score stayed that way at halftime and co-owner scott reed was rethinking his packer win that he made two days ago, hoping his team could pull it out. >> i thought this game would be a much easier game. >> we're going to come down to the wire, i think. we shall see. >> reporter: once again, the 49ers team pulled off a huge playoff win on the road with a game-ending field goal, and their fans let out a roar. >> go 49ers, man. that was a close one, but we came out with the win. >> reporter: the 9ers faithful will no doubt be back in the good time tavern cheering on their team when the team travels to either tampa bay or l.a. for the nfc championship. nbc, bay area news. and there you hear it, the revelry continued in san francisco after the game. this video from the mission

7:06 am
highway 1 remains close. we have video taken overnight near the bixby bridge. cal fire says the fire is 20% contained. it has now burned more than 1,000 acres. there were estimates it was 1,500 acres that crews thought flames had burned but they say the new number is thanks to updated mapping. the strong winds we saw yesterday also created dangerous conditions across the bay area from downed trees to power outages, winds even fueling a small brush fire in the north bay. an oakland couple found their car crushed under a tree. just look at that. they tell us they didn't even hear the wind and couldn't believe their car was destroyed. and in berkeley a tall redwood tree toppled over. the fire department tells us it responded to more than 50 calls for service, mostly related to trees and downed power lines. and north of napa, the famed silverado trail is still closed

because of downed power lines. it shut down around world renowned wineries, and crews say at the earliest work could be done this morning. for many in the bay area, it's been a struggle to find any at-home covid tests in recent weeks, but santa clara county came to the rescue for people who live and work there. 7:08 am
community, and we know there's a scarcity of testing and specifically a great need of at-home antigen tests. >> reporter: you need to sign up in advance and get a qr code to pick up as many as four kits. the county is going door to door to hand out kits in the hardest-hit neighborhoods. leaders say if you're not able to get an appointment, you can try ordering free kits online from the government. that's what ryan gallinas did, and today -- >> we actually received two sets of covid tests. >> reporter: the first test kits from the federal government started arriving in mailboxes today and now the biden administration has opened up a phone line to order test kits. that number is 800-232-0233. in san jose, nbc bay area news. happening today, san jose's childrens' discovery museum is teaming up with santa clara health leaders to get more people vaccinated.

it is just shy of 7:10 on sunday morning and we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." we take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with chuck todd, who has a preview of this week's "meet the press."
7:11 am
7:12 am
welcome back. it is time for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." thanks, as always, for joining us this morning. i know you don't know me that well, but i mean an ernest and kind congratulations. that game last night was insane. i still can't believe the 9ers won and your green bay packers did an incredible job. >> sadly, i can. i'm well aware. you know the w comic works, if kryptonite is in the room, and aaron rodgers.
7:13 am
>> thank you so much. i guess we have to talk about politics now. there was -- >> yes, ma'am. >> -- consternation this week, you could say after president biden's remarks saying vladimir putin was likely to act in terms of invading ukraine and then seemed to downplay the potential of that. you have secretary of state antony blinken who, who met with his russian counterpart yesterday -- sorry, friday. have tensions settled in regards to this crisis, or did the kremlin share anything with blinken? >> look, he's not very optimistic that -- in fact, i asked him, i said do you think, because friday went a little bit better than monday's meeting, right? but he didn't seem -- i said, is it possible that they're just playing out the string here, they want to give the illusion that they're interested in diplomacy, let the olympics happen because putin doesn't want to offend xi, and then as
7:14 am
soon as it's over, katey, bar the door. and the secretary said they're not pretending that russia is sincere. they think it's very well possible that's what they're doing and they've already made the determination. but they are hoping they can do some disuasion. i think the tricky part about what the president shared about the public is the allies are not united about what to do with putin unless it's a full-on invasion. putin knows this. what happens when he continues this chipping away, harassment, destabilizing campaign? a little bit of an incursion with russian separatist, trying to create a coup in kyiv. all of those things, what is the response going to be? and it's clear countries like germany are not as interested in having an antagonistic relationship with one of their
7:15 am
most important energy providers, and that's the problem. >> wow, that is a lot to follow. it's a scary thought. >> yes, it is. >> we will look forward to your interview today. i would normally ask you a second question, but that green bay packers/49ers discussion took up our time. >> priorities. >> great to see you. exactly. we hope you join chuck for this morning's "meet the press." we will have interviews with secretary of state antony blinken, and we didn't get to tell you he will talk to senator bernie sanders and have an exclusive interview with representative elissa slotkin. it's right after this newscast. the arizona democrat who sided with plans against her party is getting blowback from her own state. you may have heard the arizona democratic party voted to censure senator kyrsten sinema yesterday accusing her of, quote, failing to protect democracy. this week sinema and fellow democratic senator joe manchin joined republicans to vote to

keep the filibuster, which doomed a voting rights bill and spending bill favored by democratic leaders. the filibuster has been used hundreds of times by both parties over the years. arizona democrats could give sinema a vote of no confidence, meaning no support, if she runs for re-election in 2024. back here locally, we are following developing news out of the south bay, after a deadly hit and run. it happened last night on north jackson. if you know the area, it's right near regional medical center. police say a driver hit someone and drove off. that pedestrian died. it's the sixth pedestrian killed in san jose so far this year. there's no description, yet, of the hit-and-run car. yesterday on the 49th anniversary of the roe v. wade supreme court decision legalizing abortion, both sides were out in the bay area. thousands turned out for the

they don't miss when team usa makes its grand entrance to the games. this year ralph lauren chose an unassuming factory in clifton, new jersey, to manufacture the parkas he designed for the athletes. >> to be part of that ceremony, to be part of history, is an honor. i've got to pinch myself sometimes that i'm following in my grandfather and father's footsteps. >> that man is the third generation owner of better team usa. he's thrilled ralph lauren came back to the company for a second time to make team usa gear in the usa. the company is also making the jackets the athletes will wear at the closing ceremony. in all, 3,000 jackets were made at a meticulous pace of seven hours per jacket. remember, the olympics kick off in just 11 days. our own janelle wang is going to be in beijing. she'll bring us live updates

now to a story connected to both our climate in crisis series and the upcoming winter olympics, right here on nbc bay area. new research says if the world doesn't curb greenhouse gas emissions, it will be much harder to find a place to actually host future winter games. a geography professor at the university of waterloo in canada led the study. researchers found 1 of 21 former olympic cities, including palisades tahoe in california, would be considered climate reliable by the end of the century. that lone city would be sapporo, japan. if countries do cut emissions based on the paris climate agreement, eight cities could potentially host winter games

again. there is a growing population of americans who are highly critical of government leaders. a recent poll showed only 23% of the public approving of congress, and another poll finding president joe biden with the second lowest approval rating for his first year since president eisenhower, with former president donald trump being the lowest. nbc bay area political analyst larry gersten joins us. good morning. good to see you. what does this all mean? people might be upset about politicians, but what do we make of it? >> i'll tell you one thing, before we get too serious, i hope you appreciate my crimson and gold tie this morning. >> i didn't notice. i'm very impressed. >> to get serious about the real issues here, yeah, the public is very sour at elected officials. there's no question about it. all the way from the top down to the bottom where we see so many recall election these days.

one thing i saw was a poll taken recently by stanford of people who are 40 years of age or younger. this is the future. 33% of those people think democracy is essential, but 25%, one out of four, believe that democracy is bad for governing. when you've got those kinds of numbers, kira, it's a reason to be worrisome. >> so i'm not trying to insinuate that americans aren't intelligent or informed, but just how much do we as americans really know or understand about how politics and government work? >> yeah, and that's where we get to a difference, in fact, between intelligence and informed. you can be quite intelligent, but not necessarily informed. and we see that here when we look at what people know about american institutions. take a look at some of the data. 56% can identify one single branch of the national government. by the way, 33% can't name a single branch. half the folks can tell you the

supreme court has the last say in major decisions, issues. 47%, again, about half, understand the vote to overturn a presidential veto. about one-third congressional terms, only 5%, kira, know the public spends about 1% of the budget on foreign aid. most people think it's more like 26%. there's a lot of us that are not informed. here's a thing i found very interesting just the other day. an adamberg poll finds that 49% of the people in this country believe that the folks arrested from the january 6th insurrection were done so unconstitutionally. that's something to think about. >> so short of printing a cliffsnotes version of the constitution and distributing it to every american, what really can be done? >> kira, we've done a pretty bad job on educating ourselves about these things.
7:52 am
we need to go back to square one, start with the schools, work our way up. people need to understand. it's one thing to say what you think about the american system, it's another thing to understand it. and unless we really get to work, i think things like people thinking that half of the population, half of the insurrectionists were arrested unconstitutionally, that's the kind of thing that may leave us worried for our democracy downstream. we need to get to work educating ourselves now. >> we hope that can be done, really. thank you so much for your insight, and love the tie. 7:52 right now. up next, a quick look at the top stories we're following, including a fast-growing fire along the coast near carmel in the dead of winter. the latest information as firefighters try to gain the upper hand. >> and wind advisories have ex spider and we're going to start out pretty cold, in the 30s and 40s. but high pressure dominates in our forecast.

7:57 am
be mindful there is a beach hazard statement in effect. this means that west to northwest-facing beaches are expecting dangerous sneaker waves, strong rip currents and moderate to large breaking waves. so please be careful. my favorite line is admire from a distance. it looks beautiful, but never want to turn your back to a wave. it can easily sweep you in without you realizing, even though it might look nowhere. inland, seven-day forecast, we are talking about high pressure dominating the forecast. if you notice, looking way out ahead, the last weekend of january into the first week of february, it looks like we might see some activity which could bring us showers to the bay area. kira? >> fingers crossed for showers. thank you so much. thanks to all of you for makes us a part of your sunday morning. remember, football night in america right here on nbc, at noon today the los angeles rams taking on the tampa bay buccaneers and we'll be back with your news at 5:00, 6:00 and
