and online. good to be with you this morning. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm marcus washington. glad to be back with you guys today. good to be back. here we go, monday morning. good to see you, kari and mike. let's start with our forecast, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. >> good monday morning. now, we've been tracking the fire conditions just to our south, and so some of that smoke will be coming into the bay area today and having an impact on our air quality, especially in the east bay it will be unhealthy for people who are sensitive to the wildfire smoke and all the particulate matter in the air. we're also seeing fog in parts of the north bay. visibility is clear elsewhere as you're getting ready to head out the door and we'll continue to watch that. we'll be a little cooler than we've seen recently, so a bit of an early week cooldown for parts of the bay area. we'll be talking about the air

quality and what's ahead as our workweek progresses in a few minutes. mike, heading out the door, how is it looking for early-morning commuters? >> the view quality, no complaints about that. last week we had all that fog. this week, looks like a nice, easy drive. the highlighted yellow is the antioch bridge. watch around willow pass road, reports of five or six tires in the roadway. we're watching for any updates. chp had run what i assume was a quick traffic break. all the way into silicon valley, no problems getting there. >> thanks, mike. a key deadline is here. all santa clara county workers in high risk positions must get boosted by today. if they're not boosted they will be reassigned from the front lines. hospitals protested saying they would lose so many workers so the county set up a waiver

process. here's the catch, each hospital or department has to apply for the exemption. workers themselves cannot. santa clara county fire says 40 firefighters want waivers. >> let's take a closer look at the vaccination rates in south bay. nearly 89% of people age 5 and up are fully vaccinated in our county. out of people 12 and older who are eligible to get boosted, just about 61% have gotten that extra dose. those numbers are a bit better than the state's vaccination rates. let's look at those. nearly 73% of californians 5 and older are now fully vaccinated skpd of those 12 and up who are able to get a booster shot, about 52% have received it. we know there is a lot to keep track of, so if you have questions, we have answers. go to nbcbayarea.com, click on covid-19 faq in the trending barr. it is tax season.

as "today in the bay" marianne favro reports, there are some complications. >> reporter: the irs is still facing a significant backlog from last year. the reason, you guessed it, the pandemic. the irs is still trying to catch up after being forced to close offices and adjust to staffing shortages. >> there's a lot more work for the irs to do with a lot fewer staff members doing it. >> reporter: which is why carolyn chen, professor of tax at san jose university college of business offers this advice. >> if you are a traditional filing taxpayer who is going to be filing a 1040, i would urgent you to file as soon as you possibly can, and i would urgent you to file electronically. do not fire by paper. paper is where most of the backlog exists. >> reporter: and consider this. last year the irs had fewer than

15,000 people to handle 240 million calls, which means this year it may take a while for the irs to answer your questions. >> i think the expectation is that it's not just going to be a few weeks. it could be months. >> reporter: another issue, companies across the u.s. that process w-2 forms may be delayed in sending them to you because of the pandemic. when you do file, professor chen says be sure to take advantage of a new charitable giving deduction congress authorized in response to the pandemic. >> the new law has allowed a single taxpayer to be able to deduct up to $300 and married filed jointly to deduct $600 on the front page. >> reporter: this year, taxes are due on april 18th and treasury officials say there is no current plan to extend that deadline. marianne favro, "today in the

bay." in the east bay, the police department recruit who was killed in a freeway shooting earlier this month will be laid to rest today. the funeral service for david nguyen is set for 10:00 this morning at cornerstone fellowship church in livermore. it will be streamed live on the sheriffs center youtube page. after, a private burial will be held. nguyen was just a month away from becoming a sheriff's deputy when he was shot and killed near the toll plaza. coming up at 5:30, we will hear from the al media county sheriff in an exclusive interview about the service. firefighters are starting to get the upper hand on the wildfire burning between carmel and big sur. it is now 35% contained with 700 acres burned. winds will providing some relief. highway 1 remains closed with

of a delay perhaps, i don't want you to be late for your train. the changes for the schedule in effect today for the capitol corridor that will affect the commute in each direction. for the ongoing situation in business, let's check in with bertha. >> thanks, mike. good morning to you. i amber that coombs from cnba. futures on wall street set to open, coming off of a bruising week. we saw the dow fall more than 4%, it's worst week since 2020. the tech-heavy nasdaq has really been the worst performer, off more than 7% last week. now down more than 15% from its november record closing high. in focus this week, we've got about one-third of the dow jones industrial average reporting earnings with the biggest of big

tech reporting this week, apple and microsoft. another crucial thing to watch this week is the fed meeting. it starts tomorrow. investors are going to be looking for signals on when the fed plans to start raising interest rates when they report on wednesday. meantime, you may have noticed gas prices are helping to fuel inflation. they're inching up again. the average price of regular is up a penny over the past two weeks to $3.40 a gallon nationally. that's nearly a dollar higher than a year ago. analysts say prices could continue to rise as the cost of crude has gone up in part over the rising tensions between ukraine and russia. crude oil is about half the price of a gallon of gasoline. gas averaging about $4.80 a gallon in the bay area. meantime, apple has rolled back a new i.d. requirement for students and teachers to take

advantage of discount pricing. last week apple started asking people to verify their academic status through a third-party service, but it's reported that you can purchase discounted maccs and other products the old way. the shift may have come after some educators and administrators complained that they couldn't verify their status properly. marcus and kris, back to you. you know the academic market, very important for apple. >> and those discounts very important. >> the academic market might have broadened out a little bit. >> exactly. much more ahead, including an alarming discovery. one bay area neighborhood, the hateful flyers found on door steps. we're going to tell you about investigations under way in other parts of the country. >> if you're going to be near the coast today, we do have a beach hazard statement in

as you're waking up and getting ready to get this workweek started, it is mostly clear for a lot of the south bay, parts of the east bay, as well as the peninsula. here's a live look outside in san jose. it's really chilly to start out, but then take a look at where we see fog. visibility down to about half a mile in napa. i expect fog to drift into that area within the next hour or two, so we're going to continue to see fog moving around. and then once we get rid of the fog, it's going to be a hazy day. take a look at our air quality, due to the fires that are burning to our south in monterey county. some smoke drifting into the east bay so that will make it unhealthy for people who are sensitive to smoke. and then as we take a look at the rest of the bay area, air quality is going to be moderate, so still looking very hazy as we go late morning into the afternoon. but then we get ready for those

temperatures that are going to reach into the low 60s for today. some spots staying in the upper 50s, like san francisco, 58 in san mateo. you head toward the east bay, we'll see a high of about 62 degrees in dublin, 63 today in sonoma. as we look at the overall pattern, what's happening across the region, nice and dry once again. we can see all of the rain well to the north of us as it's being blocked by high pressure. that's going to slowly move out of the way and change our weather pattern as we go into next week. finally, it looks like we could see a change that will bring us wetter weather going into the early parts of february. so it's starting out looking like we could see, also, some additional snow in the sierra. there could be a couple of feet possible, maybe up to 3 feet, but once again, this is early february. so a lot of things can change between now and then. and we'll also see some of that rain moving into the bay area, but we are dry all throughout

this week. then take a look at these temperatures. we have low 60s headed our way, a little bit milder as we go toward the middle of the week with a high of about 65 on thursday. a little bit cooler for the weekend, while france will continue to see highs in the upper 50s. it does get warmer as we head toward the end of the week, as well as the weekend. mike, you've been looking at a little bit of slowing out there. >> yeah, just a little bit, and it's not in an unexpected spot. let's look at the map because last week and weeks before we didn't have a lot of this going on at all. green dominates the map. over here on the right side, from green to yellow, to orange, actually, dipping in speeds a little more out of the altamont pass where it merges with 205. out of brendwood, discoverly discovery bay, speeds at 20 minutes and that's an important route for contra costa county.

leaving in the evenings, there have been some schedule changes that are in effect today, so that may mean an earlier or later option for a couple of trains. check for the latest updates, again, in effect today. and a live look out there as well, we do have a little bit of a change for volume at the bay bridge toll plaza. saw a little more traffic flowing. right now it looks about the same as last week. we'll track for changes. back to you. >> thank you, mike. there's growing concern after neighbors in one of san francisco's most exclusive neighborhoods woke up to something alarming. >> people living in pacific heights found their doorsteps blanketed with anti-semitic flyers which say that covid is part of the jewish agenda. >> reporter: the flyers were round on union street between scott and broderick street sunday morning. a couple found the anti-semitic

material while walking their dog and shared pictures, but declined to talk on camera, saying they feared retaliation. so did another couple who found the flyer in front of their home on this part of union street. their neighbor says it has no place here. >> obviously it's a city largely of inclusion, and it's surprising to hear. >> reporter: the flyer said, quote, every single aspect of the covid agenda is jewish, and it names 15 people from the director of the cdc to pharmaceutical investors as being jewish people involved in the agenda. they were placed in plastic bags with rice to make sure they didn't blow away. >> for the purposes of spreading conspiracies, spreading lies, but also for the purpose of intimidation and terrorizing. >> reporter: the material mirrors statements made by different groups whose radical followers sometimes use the

propaganda to justify acts of physical violence. >> there is a line between spreading lies and trying to intimidate and it can inspire violence. >> reporter: we did reach out to san francisco police department to see if it is investigating these racist flyers being left on doorsteps but a spokesperson said so far this weekend, the department does not have any record of complaints being filed. thom jensen, "today in the bay." the supervise said, quotes, let be very clear, this kind of anti-semitic hatred has no place in our city. i've been in touch with sfpd and intend to see the individuals be held accountable. our communities have been terrified by the rise in hate crimes and we must do everything we can to stand against it. authorities also in florida investigating similar fires found there over the weekend. the mayor of miami beach tweeted someone left plastic bags like these outside of hundreds of homes, but in this case filled

with small pebbles. police there are increasing patrols and investigating the source. keeping tradition alive at the castro theatre, still ahead on "today in the bay," the new push by movie lovers in san francisco as the theatre may stop showing them. the reason they believe the change would be a mistake. caltrans starts work today to repair part of highway 9 in santa cruz county. that damage goes back to winter storms five years ago. it will include extending a water viaduct. the project covers the area of brook dale between boulder creek and ben loam and. work is expected to wrap up in december. we'll be right back.
