camera showing the bay bridge. can't really see the city lights because the low clouds are hovering around. things are moving smoothly here. we saw a lot more activity yesterday than we had in the past week. let's check in with the activity in the business world with bertha. thanks, mike. good morning to you. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. buckle in. wall street has been on a wild ride. not sure if you watched what was going on yesterday, but we saw a massive turnaround. it was on par with what we saw with all of the football games this past weekend. stocks fell sharply on the open over jitters about the federal reserve signaling that it could start raising rates as soon as march, and concerns about geopolitical risks with russia and ukraine tension. yesterday it was in overdrive. the dow down more than 1,100 points, to finish up 99 points on the day.
4:42 am
the biggest comeback since the pandemic hit in march 2020 for the dow. the nasdaq even more volatility. it was down more than 4% at one point. it closed higher, the biggest comeback there since the financial crisis in 2008. the s&p 500 closed up 2% on the day, after having been down 1%. that whole trade coming in the final hour to close up the first and the biggest rally for the s&p since 2018. traders say we're likely to continue to see this volatility continue. we did see yesterday a lot of folks come in and get those beaten-down tech stocks in particular. we're going to be watching the fed as they start their two-day meeting today. meantime, ford has what you call a high-class problem. the company is halting orders for the maverick pickup truck that it rolled out last year because there's been overwhelming demand for the truck, which starts at about
4:43 am
$20,000. so ford doesn't really want to take on more orders than it can build. it's going to resume taking orders for the 2023 maverick this summer. customers may still be able to pick up one at their local ford dealer. and twitter is working on a new feature to let you share tweets with a specific group of people, similar to instagram's close friends. the feature called flock will let you add up to 150 members and only those people can view or reply to tweets send to your flock. and you can remove someone from your list at any time and they won't get a notification. so marcus and laura, you don't have to hurt their feelings, of course, everybody else in the flock has to sort of keep it private so they don't find out that you, you know, kicked them out. >> don't screenshot it and then share it with everybody else. >> out of the flock, yeah. over again.e high school all >> i know.
4:44 am
it's just like new,le? thanks, bertha. a winter wildfire is still burning near big sur. next on "today in the bay," the our climate in crisis and how the fires may become all so much more common. and we're starting out with some fog in parts of the north bay. we can see the visibility dropping up around santa rosa. keeping an eye on that as well as what we're expecting heading into the rest of the forecast coming up next. >> and we can see clearly over here in oakland from our rooftop camera. the nimitz looks great. the last of the construction cleared up through freemont. we're watching that and we'll give you a bigger look coming up.
4:47 am
good morning. welcome back. let's check our roadways with a live look at our camera on the peninsula. palo alto looks great. 101 farther north heading through san mateo, we do have your overnight construction crews going on and you see no slowing for a couple of lanes that are blocked in the couple of on ramps. we're looking at a smooth drive and we'll give a look ahead at the san francisco area where just off of the 280 extension there's chase center, no games tonight but a booster clinic. go to chasecenter.com/events to
4:48 am
find out about that because there will be new requirements for attending the warriors games. and we're looking ahead toward the morning commute as well. the rest of the commute yesterday where the arrows are, saw a lot more slowing than we've seen for the last few weeks, and we'll see, kari, tuesday is traditionally more traffic, and we'll watch for that. we see the fog in the north bay as well. over to you. >> yeah, we can see that low visibility in the north bay. but, also, what you can't see are the temperatures and how cold it is this morning. right now we're seeing a lot of these numbers dropping down to the mid-30s and i wouldn't be surprised if a few spots got to freezing this morning. we're feeling that in the south county, but then as we go into the rest of today, spots like santa rosa will go from right near freezing. we're at 33 right now. we'll go to the upper 60s and see sunshine with a milder day, compared to what we're starting with.
4:49 am
as we take a look at what's going on around big sur, we've been keeping an eye on what's called the colorado fire. this still burning, but we are getting more containment. looking at the weather conditions in that area, it's now 47 degrees. it's chilly, humidity is coming up and the winds are a lot lighter compared to when this fire first started. hopefully that containment will continue. some of that smoke is and we're going to see at times some moderate air quality, a hazy-looking sky. we've seen some improvement in our air quality as well. yesterday was unhealthy for sensitive groups for parts of the east bay. so we are seeing the measure of particulate matter coming down. our temperatures are headed for the mid-60s for today. this is going to be very much like yesterday afternoon, kind of a hazy sky, but sunny, and then looking at our temperatures headed for the mid-60s for some spots, upper 50s for oakland, 60 in hayward and 59 in san mateo. san francisco, looks like we're
4:50 am
staying in the 50s. mission district reaching 58 degrees and north bay, our highs will reach into the upper 60s. we've been stuck in this weather pattern for much of january with no rain, and that does continue as the high pressure stays in place. it's keeping the rain away from the bay area and it's going to be very slow to fade and weaken as we go into next week. it does look like at this point the rain will stay to the north of us, but we'll be keeping an eye on that and hopefully we can get rain for early february. our seven-day forecast shows not a whole lot of changes. temperatures in the low to mid-60s and for san francisco, highs reaching into the upper 50s over the next several days. let's turn to our climate in crisis and we're looking at that fire in big sur, burning in monterey county, for an example of how we could see these winter wildfires happening more often. we are no longer just seeing the fires happening in just a
4:51 am
season, but they're occurring year-round, and that has agencies like cal fire having to look at how they're staffing throughout the year. and as our temperatures warm globally, we could continue to see these winter wildfires increasing. so as we go into the next several months, unfortunately, we are looking at that potential of fires that could happen due to the trees, we have a high mortality rate with a lot of the trees, and also these extreme droughts that we've seen. and so with the next several years, scientists are saying that winter wildfires may be a thing we have to deal with in the next several decades. and so what we've seen, too, what could be called zombie fires, we have those fires in the summertime that just reignite during the winter during dry spells. check out more stories like this on our website, nbcbayarea.com.
