before the big game on sunday. >> also ahead, this amazing fan story. one 9er super fan recently got the opportunity to make custom cleats for one of the 9ers players. you can hear from him coming up at 5:15. first, let's get a look at the friday forecast for you. meteorologist vianey arana in for kari this morning. >> hey, there. it's setting up really nicely. cold in the bay area, 30s and 40s right n 35, morgan hill 39, jose 39. so even though it's cold, we're going to be run ago few degrees warmer this afternoon. there's coit tower lit up for the 9ers. san fran right now. we're going to have a couple of high clouds rolling through in san francisco, but fog not really a factor this morning. i'm going to guide you through your evening highs and what to expect heading into saturday and sunday coming up in my full forecast. >> thank you. the covid crisis inching closer to impacting classrooms in another bay area school

district. the clock is ticking down to a strike vote. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live this morning to explain what teachers are asking for and the families who may soon feel the impact. kris? >> reporter: marcus, it is certainly disruptive when teachers don't show up to school, but we can understand their call for safety and now the west contra costa county teachers in the district, they are calling for the same sorts of protections that we've heard before from the district in oakland. now, here's what their union -- this is the united teachers of richmond is demanding, they want high-quality masks for everyone, they also want weekly testing for everyone. but they want twice-weekly testing in classes where they have seen an outbreak of some sort. the majority of the district's 1,500 teachers, nurses and staff say they are willing to walk off the job over this, while the union and the district have been negotiating, today is the final deadline to come to some sort of

agreement. we asked the district for a comment. we have not heard back from them at this point. however, the east bay times obtain a letter which reads in part, employees coordinating with one another to call in sick together is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. this type of action is not helpful and exacerbates our current staff issues. now, the staff issues are in addition to student absences. at one point, in one week in january, about one-third of the student body was out. that's 2,700 students, one-third were out sick. i tried to check the covid cases for the current week but the district's dashboard is down. i'll keep updating that for you as we go through the morning and we wait to see how negotiations go. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. thanks to the declining covid cases, san francisco is about to dial back its masking

rules. beginning next tuesday, masks will no longer be required in offices, gyms, religious gatherings and college classrooms. but if everyone is vaccinated, boosted and gatherings are less than 100 people, religious and medical vaccine exemptions will be allowed for places like restaurants and bars, but people will need a recent negative covid test to enter. >> we are going to give people a five-day grace period to get boosted, our employees, as well as our clienlts. then there's a mandated wait period, then after that's done we'll remove the mask mandate. >> other bay counties say they're following the state's guidance. president biden opening the door for history, indicating he will nominate a black woman for the u.s. supreme court. biden made the announcement on the heels of justice steven

breyer confirming he'll retire yesterday. ketanji brown jackson, leondra kruger and michelle childs. if you want to know more about the judges considered top contenders, head to nbcbayarea.com or our app. click on supreme court at the top of the page. a message going out from one bay area city, calling 911 can come with a cost. vallejo is bringing back what it calls first responders fee. the department is reintroducing a program to bill insurance companies directly when you call 911. if you don't have insurance, you won't get a bill and the department will cover the cost. cities like dickson and fairfield have similar rules.

let's take a live look outside this morning at the golden gate bridge. looking nice and clear for the most part. really clear, actually. we haven't seen this this week. >> are you surprised? >> sometimes it's all foggy and sometimes it's nice and clear. i think it's nice and clear as we coast into the weekend. >> indeed. it's setting us up for a lovely weekend. our daytime highs will be a few degrees warmer. 67 degrees in san jose today, morgan hill 68. really upper 60s through the south bay and in through the east bay. take a look at your daytime highs for concord, 63, hayward 65, oakland 62, and around the peninsula 64, in san mateo 64. if you're going to be heading to san francisco, also expected to be in the low to mid-60s. so a beautiful sunny day in the city with a couple of high clouds rolling through into the

afternoon. santa rosa a high of 66. sonoma 66 and novato 65. now, we've seen this high pressure keep us not only dry, but also keep us warm. and for the most part we haven't seen any chance of real rain because of it. it's blocked any chance from our north and our south, but i have an extended outlook coming up in my seven-day forecast and what to expect for at least the first week of february coming up in just a few minutes. first, let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> i was checking out these live cameras right here behind me, but let's take a look at the camera we have in emeriville. see those taillights? that's westbound. your commute direction heading toward the bay bridge, steady stream. it's light, but there was no traffic for about three minutes. reports of debris in lanes, that someone hit, i think, it was a bumper. traffic flow is restored here. the map shows you there's a

university and continuing into san francisco. no delays. we'll show you the bigger look at your commute coming up. good morning. very happy friday to you, as well. we're going to get a look at wage growth data here in a few minutes. the government should send that to us around 5:30 our time, and we expect it to show americans are making more and more money. economists predict american wages jumped 1.2% in the last months of 2021. the three months before that, wages rose 3.7% over the same time year-over-year previous. now, this is important, of course, because we're all trying to deal with inflation, and asking for a raise is one way flation.mily of course, higher labor costs also cause inflation. so higher pay is both the cause of and solution to our problems. now, on thursday we got the

latest gdp numbers showing that when you combine all the goods and services that america creates, basically the combination of everything we do together as americans, our output jumped 6.9% for the year, which is a huge number. the white house was quick to jump on that, pointing out, correctly, that president biden's first year in office was the strongest year for economic growth since 1984. that is true, but the bar was fairly low, right? the pandemic had depressed economic outlook, so recovering from it creates record growth. the same goes for jobs. more jobs under biden than any president in modern history, but then, again, coming from a pandemic low. either way, though, basically things are going really well. the irony or the frustration for the white house is most americans don't see it. we have more jobs than people willing to take them, wages are

up. but a gallop survey this month found that only 29% of americans believed it was getting better. 67% believed it's getting worse. it's not, but that's what people believe. one more survey for you, and i thought this was fascinating. economists checked in with american small businesses and found businesses that require their employees to be vaccinated have an easier time filling open positions than companies that don't have a vaccination requirement. >> those that did saw fewer sick days and saw more trust from their employees and that's a signal from companies to employees saying that we care about you, we care about your safety and we want to create an environment where you feel protected. >> reporter: i thought that was an interesting statistic. logically, you would think the more hurdles you put in front of an employee to get a job, the more difficulty it would be to hire that person. the opposite seems true and it could be very well that people

california. look how great this shot of coit tower is in honor of the 9ers. it's going to be a big game and temperatures will be pretty much mild and comfortable, so if you had plans to do tailgating locally, it's going to be great. 35 in dublin, 35 in concord, 39 in san jose. look at fog and visibility. no issues there. we've got great visibility throughout the entire bay area. a couple of patchy fog areas, but mainly through sacramento and santa rosa. no big concerns. forecasted highs for this afternoon, it will be a couple degrees warmer in some spots, including san jose, running about 2 to 3 degrees warmer. morgan hill 68. we're going to near the 70s. isn't that really good weather for january? i guess the last couple days of january, because we're heading into february. 65 in danville, 62 in oakland. now, we've been really, really dry. we haven't gotten a real chance of rain, thanks to that really dominant high pressure, and it

looks like we're going to stay dry. as we continue to see this high pressure pattern, we're also seeing low humidity. into the weekend, the high pressure sticks around, lingering, and you can see rain to our north, but not quite here in the bay area, leading into the first week of february. it still looks pretty dry according to the model. here's a closer look at your seven-day forecast. we're monitoring windy conditions heading into tuesday. in san francisco, notice on sunday a high of about 58 degrees, through inland areas, temps in the low to mid-60s. overnight lows are going to dip down into the 30s and you're going to be waking up to 30s for the next several days. so keep that jacket in hand, but at least you can shed it in the afternoon. nearing 70s isn't too bad. let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> vianey, let's take you out to the roadways. we saw unusual slowing.

it's only 5:19 right now and slowing 101. i checked the grid, there is a repair project going on in the area, and so they may be moving crews right now. looking at the altamont pass, some folks may not come in this morning, light traffic there. 20 minutes out of discovery bay. there's your drive here, 580 moving slowly once you pass the merge with 205. and highway 4 coming down from antioch toward concord. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza shows you light flow. the debris near powell has been moved to the shoulder, as has a minor crash. back to you. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> today we have two cases, one for a couple grand and another

sunday's nfc championship game. bob redell live outside the stadium this morning. the faithful will be out in full force, even though sofi really tried to keep them away. >> reporter: good morning, laura. it appears that the rams attempt to keep 49ers fans from attending the game in los angeles this sunday might have backfired. more on that in a second. first, the 49ers path to the nfc championship once seemed unlikely, especially when you considered a team four straight losses early in the season. but under quarterback jimmy garoppolo and with players like george kittle, bosa, they came back. they have beaten the rams the last six games in a row. we spoke with 49ers insider, and he tells us don't think that

six-game winning streak against the rams means the 9ers have sunday's game in the bag. >> it's tough for any team to beat another team twice in a season, let alone three times, let alone seven times over a span of three years, especially a talented team like the rams. i go into this game just thinking wherever the ball bounces. i think these are two very evenly matched teams. the coaching staffs are both very good, they know each other well. i really don't think whatever has happened in the past will have a huge impact on what happens on sunday in the championship game. i just think both teams go into this game feeling very good about their chances. >> it certainly helps when you've won six in a row. i think it's mentally in the heads of the rams and the rams organization, so at this point i would much rather be the team that's won six in a row than the team that's lost six in a row. a lot of those players are the same. and so i think it bodes well for

us. >> reporter: that was former 49ers tight end brent jones. he played in three super bowls, seven nfc championship games. he understands the pressure the 9ers must feel as they go into sofi stadium on sunday. there should be a lot of red and gold in the stands like there was the last time the 9ers played there. you'll recall earlier this week the rams head coach stride to restrict ticket sales from fans outside of the los angeles area. they rescinded that and might have inadvertently fired up 49ers fans even more. i say that because the "l.a. times" reports that vivid seats is estimating that 65% of the tickets to sunday's game have gone to 49ers fans. that's their estimate. reporting live outside levi's stadium, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. brent jones had a lot more to say about sunday's game. you can find out who he picks to win. better not be the rams.

booster shots? >> we predict that there will be a need for a yearly booster shot to provide protection against death and hospitalization. now, i think the question is going to be, what is in that booster? pragmatically for this year, we need one that can cover omicron, delta probably as well. we're working on that now. and then as we go forward, what do we put in there? our aspiration, our ambition is to also put flu in there, so you would get a single vaccine that covers you, a one-stop shot against flu and covid. we'll start testing that late this year and hope to have that available for people in the fall of 2023. >> a lot of people don't necessarily like getting those booster shots in general. what we have seen from medical experts, they do talk about the booster shots and how they have done what they were supposed to. they have reduced hospitalizations during the omicron surge.

but many people are still getting infected with the virus. what has moderna learned in this process when we've seen the omicron surge in order to improve that vaccine as we move forward? >> that these cases where people are dying or being hospitalized really are occurring in people who are unvaccinated and unboosted. so i think what we've learned is people need to be able to trust the vaccines and we need to get more and more education out, websites like makeityourvaccine,.com. if you're vaccinated and boosted, you're protected. >> a lot of parents have been thinking about debating. i know moderna is working on the vaccine for kids ages 2-5. what is the timeline for that vaccine that you can tell us about, as well as the impact that it may have on those participants? >> it's such an important point, marcus, because omicron in particular has

disproportionately impacted even the littlest kids, the 2 to 5 year olds. a lot of them being hospitalized. we have a study that uses the 25 micro gram dose of the moderna vaccine. typically adults get two shots of 100 micrograms. these little kids would get two shots of 25 micrograms. we think the study should be complete probably in the coming weeks, by march. we'll get the data as quickly as we can, share them with the fda and regulators. if they're positive, we'll be hopeful that it will get approved. because there is a big unmet need for the little guys. >> dr. paul burton, chief medical officer for moderna. i want to thank you for your time. >> thank you, marcus. now, dr. burton and i spoke for a lot longer about many other issues, including what he thinks of those apprehensive of getting the booster due to the vaccine side effects. you can watch the full interview

million self-employed californians to prove they were entitled to benefits they received. those who do not show proof may be required to pay the money back with a 30% penalty. it's a quarter until 6:00 right now. diplomacy may be helping to diffuse the situation in ukraine. >> the russians are pointing to rational elements in the american plan. >> rational elements, those are the russians' words, and they don't sound like much, but that's a direct quote from their minister, sergey lavrov, who is the equivalent of their secretary of state. when it comes to diplomacy, you don't complement the other side without meaning something. so the russians are citing progress, seems to be good signs. the russians say vladimir putin has not yet made a decision on whether or not to invade, but of course he's not going to put that -- he's going to put that off as long as he can. if he were to withdraw his

5:56. welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." new accusations against the san francisco da's office. prosecutors are being accused of withholding evidence in the hopes of convicting a san francisco police officer of excessive force. our investigative unit has learned a member of the da's office testified she was ordered by her own co-workers, attorneys inside the da's office, to withhold evidence. and said she believed she would have been fired if she refused. this all has to do with an officer accused of unnecessarily beating a man with his baton more than two years ago. the da's office investigator yesterday told the judge she never disclosed the fact that she interviewed a witness who said just before the officer pulled out his baton, the man he hit was seen beating his girlfriend. the officer has argued his use of force was justified and has now filed a motion to dismiss, based on the alleged misconduct in the da's office.

the judge is yet to rule on whether to throw out the case. district attorney chesa boudin and his office did not respond to our request for comment. backlash from a dave chappelle comedy on publix. a lgbt group is dropping the service from its index. they did not include netflix due to the controversy. since 2017, netflix never scored below 100% for the same index. following the initial backlash, from a few cop workers, the ceo of netflix said while some employees disagree, we have a strong belief that content on screen doesn't directly translate to real-world harm. >> a lot of conversations on social media as the classic disney character gets a makeover. mini house is dropping her traditional red and polka dot dress or a navy blue pants suit. the new look was designed by
