jersey, massachusetts and maryland and virginia urging residents to stay inside and off the road so the crews can stay ahead of the storm. >> already this morning, close to 3500 flights have been canceled that and number is likely to rise. the team is fanned out from new york to new england. we want to begin with emilieikeada on long island. emilie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is coming down at a fast clip. several inches is hour. that makes it difficult for the plows to keep up with the pace of the storm. i want to show you the consistent of the snow. the winds are biting. it picks up the snow and worsens visibility. that is why you will hear from forecasters and officials telling people to stay home warning of the nearly impossible travel conditions. it has been quiet on the roads so far.

ecept when we see the caravans of snow plows. nearly 2,000 plows responding to the winter storm. we are seeing similar pictures across the northeast. several governors declaring states of emergency here in new york and maryland and new jersey. part of new jersey seeing more than a foot of snow. similarly in maryland, where they are getting 9 inches. this is the brunt of the storm which continues to move through. we will see several more hours of these types of conditions. keep in mind, we are getting bitter cold. if you are going to step outside today, two words. layer up. parts of long island will see windchills drop to 12 below. guys. >> emilie, stay warm. thank you. >> let's head to boston where they could wind up with 2.5 feet of snow when all is said and done. kathy park has the latest for us. kathy, how does it look?

>> reporter: morgan, good morning to you. snow is coming down hard. the winds are starting to pick up. here in massachusetts, this really is just the beginning of the storm. later on today, we could have snowfall rates between 2 to 4 inches per hour. the state is throwing a lot of resources at this potentially historic storm. roughly 4,000 pieces of equipment at the ready. in boston, a snow emergency is in place and that means there are parking restrictions in place. boston logan international airport. travel has been at a standstill. cancellations in and out of the airport. we are tracking the coastal communities. they are getting slammed with the snow, but also dealing with potential power outages. winds gusting at last check clocking close to 50 to 60 miles per hour. flooding is a big concern.

we were in scituate yesterday. conditions are expected to deteriorate as with we go into the later hours and officials here are encouraging people to hunker down. they don't want you out on the roads. guys, back to you. >> kathy, i know you will keep us posted. kathy park in boston. >> let's go to dylan dreyer in battery park. dylan, what are we looking at? >> reporter: we have snow in new jersey overnight. we will see heavy snow and very gusty winds throughout the morning. we have blizzard warnings along the coast. this not issued since back in 2018 to have this many blizzard warnings along the coast. we are going to see just deteriorating conditions, especially across long island. you see the brighter patches

with the bright white and dark blues. that's where we have the heavy snow. it comes in like bands off the ocean. that is when you get visibility reduced and potential for snowfall rates up to 2 to 4 inches per hour. winds through the day could be as high as 40 and up to 60 miles an hour. that with the light and fluffy snow reduces visibility. travel is impossible along the i-95 corridor and up and down the east coast. we will see the trees and power lines covered in snow. some areas up to 2 feet of snow. especially in southern new england. you tack on 60-mile-an-hour wind on top of that and we likely will see power outages. that say concern with the cold. we are looking at blizzard warnings producing perhaps rates of 2 to 4 inches of snow per hour and whiteout conditions. how much snow will we get? likely we will see at least a foot of snow in the new york,

new jersey area. some parts of new jersey picked up a foot of snow and up in the massachusetts, closer to 2 feet. some areas in southeastern mass could pick up closer to 3 feet of snow. >> good saturday to hunker down. dylan, thank you. we will get the full forecast in a couple of minutes. also this morning, ntsb officials are on the scene in pittsburgh trying to figure out what caused the bridge to collapse friday morning. it happened hours before president biden was set to arrive in pittsburgh to talk about his infrastructure plan and how it will fix thousands of bridges like that one across the country. nbc's josh lederman is at the white house with more. josh, good morning. >> reporter: morgan, good morning. officials breathing a sigh of relief took place before rush hour. likely minimizing injuries. president biden says the harrowing incident should be a infrastructure wake-up call. it wasn't planned, but it sure made the point.

this bridge in pittsburgh plummeting to the ground hours before president biden was set to speak there about america's crumbling infrastructure. >> unacceptable. >> reporter: it is a miracle. no deaths. although ten people were injured. >> i was driving across in my mind, i knew the bridge was collapsing. >> reporter: mr. joe biden making a detour to view the bridge. one of many across the country listed in poor condition. >> we will fix them all. >> reporter: it was an i told you so moment for the president struggling to sell the infrastructure law. achievements that democrats are running on in midterms. >> i have been saying for years, we have to do something about this. we finally got it done. >> reporter: the biden administration has started doling oath $27 billion to repair bridges across the country. pennsylvania will get $1.6 billion over five years. there is $3 billion for airports

and $7 billion for upgrade of pipes. many projects will take years to get off the ground. according to the report, the infrastructure gets a c minus. >> this brings to the forefront the need to renew infrastructure, i'm not sure what else can happen. >> reporter: this morning, an ntsb team is on the ground to investigate. at least three people are still hospitaled in fair condition. >> we have to move. the next time we don't need headlines saying someone was killed when the next bridge collapses. >> josh, we know with all eyes on the infrastructure plan, people are focused on the priority the president has in nominating a new justice for the supreme court. has the president given any further indication as to who he is considering? >> reporter: morgan, the white house confirming that judge j. michelle childs is on the list. she is a federal judge in south

carolina who supported by a close biden ally. president biden has nominated judge childs for the appeals court. she had a senate confirmation hearing scheduled this week. now the white house will postpone the hearing while childs is considered for the supreme court. the president's short list is believed to include judge ketanji brown jackson. a former law clerk for justice stephen breyer and california supreme court justice leondra kruger. a white house spokesman told me those are not the only three candidates the president is considering. president biden will announce his decision by the end of february. >> historic nomination. josh lederman, thank you. a new york city police officer was laid to rest on friday one week after he was shot and killed while responding to a call. his wife demanding change at his funeral as the u.s. sees alarming rise in gun violence directed at police officers.

the judge re-sentencing the former zookeeper to 21 years on friday. that reduces his punishment by just a year despite pleas from the 58-year-old for leniency as he begins cancer treatment. exotic was convicted after hiring two men to kill carole baskins. back to the story this morning of the snow which is coming down and is still more to come. we have ellison barber out with more on long island. >> reporter: morgan, new york city, we are already getting it as well. one of the big concerns officials say is the wind. look at the snow. it is really powdery snow. when the wind comes through, it picks it up and whips it into the air creating dangerous whiteout conditions. if you look down the road, we already lost a street light here in brooklyn.

the commissioner of sanitation says they have some 280,000 tons of salt out and ready to go. they pre-treated 700 miles of road in new york city. 1,800 snow plows ready to tackle this event. big picture, if you do not have to be outside, stay home. they are doing their best to treat the roads as the snow comes. it is going to be a lot. they want new yorkers to check on neighbors, particularly those who are elderly. if you see anyone out and about who doesn't have shelter or might need help getting some place warm, call 311 so they can try to take care of them. this, they say, is going to be a really big event. it is the winds and sending the powdery snow up into the air to cause a lot of problems. this area down here at the end of this street, morgan, normally you, have a great view of the manhattan skyline. today with this snow, the winds

andyou can't see any of it. morgan. >> stay warm and stay safe. we appreciate you. this seems like a good saturday to hunker down and stay inside if you have the opportunity. dylan does not. she is a weather person which means she is out in it right now. here is another look at the forecast. you see the snow coming sideways in ellison's shot, dylan. >> reporter: i can feel it on this side of my face, also. it is coming down. it is going to remain heavy off and on throughout the day as the bands come in off the water. as it looks like things are improving for a minute, all of a sudden visibility drops greatly with the heavy bands that produce snow at rates of 2 to 4 inches an hour. along the coast of new jersey with the bright white, those are the heavier bands of snow. that continues to rotate up across rhode island and connecticut and massachusetts as well. let's compare this to other snowstorms in boston. the biggest snowstorm on record in boston happened in 2003 with

27.6 inches. it is likely if this storm, if we get more than 24 inches, this could be the biggest january storm on record. in southeastern massachusetts, they get the higher totals. we could get closer to 3 feet of snow. the winds gust up to 60 miles per hour. we have 2 to 3 feet of snow in areas. that is likely to cause power outages. right now, you see the windchills are well down below zero up in places like binghamton and in new york feels like 7. boston feels like 5. as we go into tomorrow, the cold will continue to pour in. we will see the windchills tomorrow morning well down below zero in boston and in new york city it will feel like 5 below. if anyone a live look right now in downtown san jose. we're starting out really clear but also very cold. dublin, 36 degrees right now.

74 million covid cases. that's according to an nbc tally. more than 7 million are right here in california with about 76,000 new daily cases. now state health leaders confirmed more cases of that new omicron subvariant have been detected here in our state. there are now 26 confirmed cases of ba.2 as it is called. they've been identified on the map as you can see in santa clara, los angeles, orange and tulare counties. it is one-and-a-half times more contagious than the original omicron variant and it is circulating in almost half of the u.s. there is some good news. the cdc says there's no evidence it is more severe than omicron. the uk health agency says ba.2 doesn't appear to reduce the effectiveness of vaccine. happening today, sonoma county will be holding vaccine clinics at the county fair

here is the storm right now. you can see we have the heavier snow in new jersey, long island, connecticut, massachusetts and up into new england and parts of new jersey and fork picked up 15.5 inches. in new york city, closer to 5 inches. the snow will continue for the mid-atlantic. it lasts up to new england and it will as the storm intensifies produce snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour. then it will continue to move up into nova scotia into sunday. here is the set up for today. we have the potential for winds up to 40 to 60 miles per hour. that cobined with heavy snow will reduce visibility. it will be dangerous on the roads. that is why everyone is saying stay home. we can do that on a saturday. we also have to worry about power outages. with the heavy snow on the trees and power lines and the gusty winds across the cape and islands and parts of southern new england and eastern long
