beautiful shot there. they've been doing this, really, for the past several days, of course, ever since the 9ers have been winning. right now, though, it is really cold as we step out the door. 33 degrees in dublin, 37 in san jose, 34 in morgan hill. even up through santa rosa and napa. it's pretty clear, but we are seeing areas of patchy, dense fog up through parts of novato and santa rosa, and also up through napa as well. so be mindful of that. san francisco's temperature forecast will bump up into the 50s. we've got sunshine in store. full game day forecast coming up. >> love it. we'll see you in about 15. thanks so much. it will be a sea of red and gold today here in the bay area and down in los angeles, as we are eight and a half hours away from the nfc championship game. the san francisco 49ers, of course, taking on the los angeles rams. the winner punches their ticket to the super bowl. the 49ers faithful are known for following their team all over

the country, creating what they call a redout. and as we told you yesterday morning, some lucky 9ers fans flying to l.a. for the game got a special sendoff yesterday at sfo. the 49ers drum line was there for a pep rally, along with team mascot sourdough sam. "today in the bay's" anthony flores is there for more on the 9ers invasion. [ crowd chanting ] . >> reporter: a sea of read flooded the streets of l.a. >> the energy is just crazy. >> reporter: it was called a 49ers invasion. hundreds packed the local bar as the faithful hopes to turn sofi stadium into levi's south for nfc's championship game. >> we take over said yums wherever we go, so we're definitely going to do it again this week. >> all the love and support, we are taking over l.a.

>> reporter: the faithful took over sofi stadium in week 18, making the rams house look and sound like a home game for the 9ers in a must-win just to get to the playoffs. fans have traveled from the bay area and beyond to show they're rolling with the 9ers. >> the faithful travel as well, we all know that. we've got the good luck charm baby right here. just excited, man. hopefully we make another super bowl run. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: the 9ers are just four quarters away from a run to their second super bowl in three years. i'm anthony flores for "today in the bay." >> some of our iconic landmarks, vianey was just showing us, were lit up overnight, the conservatory of flowers, the music concourse at golden gate park, and coit tower is bathed in red and gold. the san francisco recreation and parks department says the landmarks will stay lit in these colors as long as the 9ers keep winning.

"today in the bay's" marianne favro shows us where to look.

>> reporter: i actually picked up this free n95 mask here at this rite aid in los gatos, but as we found, they're not easy to find. the n95 masks are from the strategic national stockpile, but it appears so far very few have landed at south bay pharmacies. we checked and found none here or here, or at more than a dozen other pharmacies we called. this gentleman is on a quest to find one at this walgreens in san jose. >> i'm going to ask if they have one. >> reporter: the store didn't have one. >> it's a disaster. too bad. they should have it. >> reporter: but at this rite aid in los gatos, the free n95 masks were available. customers could pick up as many as three from a table at the front of the store. kathy says after a friend tipped her off, she rushed to the store, glad to get the added protection of an n95 without the added cost. >> for a lot of people they're expensive, so they may not be

able to get them and have them for free. i'm retired, so it's nice to have them. >> reporter: the cdc recently updated mask guidelines, saying well-fitted respirator masks such as n95s offer more protection than cloth masks against covid. >> we're in the age of omicron and we're encouraging everyone to upgrade their masks, whether it's been n95, kn95, or even just a double mask. anything people can do to upgrade their masks with this highly contagious variant is important. >> reporter: so if you're still trying to get a free n95, be diligent. even the few pharmacies that are offering them right now may soon run out. >> i got the last three. >> reporter: marianne favro, "today in the bay." happening tomorrow, the courtrooms in the south bay will be open once again. earlier this month santa clara county closed the courts to the public because of the omicron

surge. so many workers got sick, there weren't enough people to keep the courts open. beginning tomorrow, clerk's offices and courts will reopen once again. in two days you'll need to prove your vaccination status if you're going out in oakland. the city's indoor vaccine mandate starts on tuesday. anyone 12 and older will be required to show proof of vaccination to visit businesses, like restaurants, bars, theatres, gyms, and large indoor event at city-owned properties. oakland joined san francisco and berkeley in requiring proof of vaccination to enter indoor businesses. and a live look over san francisco. the city is about to dial back its masking rules. beginning tuesday, february 1st, masks will no longer be required in offices, gyms, religious gatherings or college classrooms, if everyone is vaccinated, boosted, and the gathering has fewer than 100 people.

it is time for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." as always, thanks for joining us this morning. good to see you. with justice stephen breyer's retirement from the supreme court, or his announcement, at least, president biden said he would nominate, quote, someone of extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity, and that person will be the first black woman ever nominated to the united states supreme court. first of all, is there a short list, and how soon could that happen? we know amy comey barrett was quite quickly rushed through in her nomination. >> right. well, there is a short list. i think the white house wants to not confirm how short it is. i think they want to showcase the number of highly qualified african american women there are for this post. but it's interesting you bring up the timing.

one of the front runners appears to be judge katanje jackson. if it's her, senator durbin said today, they could move things fast because they've already gone through her record, they've already been through this process. let's say it's the supreme court justice, southern california supreme court justice krueger. her nomination could take a little bit longer because the committee hasn't ever vetted her before. so some of it will depend on the nominee. look, a lot of times i believe white houses when they're telegraphing. it is rare that a white house doesn't telegraph who the likely pick is. alaina kagan was the first name sort of said and then she vetted fine. sotomayor, same thing. and he would look at brown

jackson and consider her the front runner. >> and i want to ask you about covid, because it's interesting, i believe you have two governors in your studios this morning from very different sides of the aisle. here in california, at least in the bay area, something interesting is happening. some have seen it as a surprise move that beginning tuesday mask mandates are changing, san francisco will be more lenient on indoor masking, some prominent doctors are pushing for kids to be able to go maskless at schools. what is their consensus or what are those two governors saying today? >> well, they both said it is time -- they both want policies that aren't essentially driven by the emergency anymore, meaning that this is not an emergency, it's something we have to worry about, it's something we have to deal with, but they would like a different change in posture, if you will. so what you're describing in san francisco, what you're

describing that you're hearing from those folks out there, that's the conversation i heard from both governor murphy of new jersey, who has added a booster to his health care worker mandate, and a governor hutchinson, who still argues that the mandates he thinks are self-defeating, but admits he needs to up the boosters in his own state. they both expressed a desire that they would like a little less of the emergency ideas that have been coming out of the covid response team. >> so maybe less pandemic, more endemic? but i won't make you agree to that. >> that's probably the way to look at it, but, yes, the don't call it an endemic endemic yet. >> we'll look forward to the interviews. we hope you join chuck for this morning's "meet the press." he'll have an interview with senator dick durbin and interviews with asa hutchinson and phil murphy. it's right after this newscast. at least nine people are

dead, and several others are injured following a multi-vehicle crash in las vegas. police say a maroon dodge challenger was speeding and ran a red light, plowing into several cars yesterday afternoon. at least 15 people were involved. among those killed were young children and that driver of the dodge challenger. it likely will take days for the northeast to dig out from this weekend's winter storm. nearly 2 feet of snow fell in areas of new england and parts of massachusetts. wind gusts topped 70 miles per hour. the wind piled into huge snow drifts. massachusetts alone, the storm knocked out power to more than 120,000 homes. more than 4,500 flights have been canceled. locally, crews are continuing to make great progress on the colorado fire, which is almost out. the fire has burned nearly 700 acres in monterey county. it is now 90% contained.

volunteers and donors gathered in san francisco for a relief event benefiting victims of the tongan volcano eruption. the effort yesterday collected food, water, clothes and money. several local organizations brought volunteers and donors. the bay area is home to a significant tongan community, making this drive personal for some. it will take about a month for donated items to arrive on the island because of how travel and shipping have been impacted. the relief effort will continue as long as there is a need. as athletes and other olympics personnel start to arrive in beijing this weekend, all eyes are on the covid numbers. so far, 36 people have tested positive and 29 of those cases were discovered immediately after arrival at the beijing airport. the u.s. olympic delegation flew in friday night and were quickly cleared for entry. hundreds more athletes and officials poured into the airport yesterday.

we are now just four days away from the start of the winter games, and our teammates are there, janelle wang, and it will be so exciting to see them. it is time to get back here locally and check in with meteorologist vianey arana for a look at our sunday forecast. >> and as promised, we're wearing 9ers colors this morning, and we are also seeing the coit tower lit up for the 9ers. it looks like it's been fading a little. they've been lighting it in honor of the 49ers. we are going to see a little more cloud cover through the afternoon, but things are still quiet. no big changes in the forecast, really all week long. we've seen a similar weather pattern and we are seeing some areas with patchy, dense fog. take a look at this. novato down to a quarter of a mile, through the south bay we've got pretty much clear conditions, no concerns about any fog. but we are seeing those 30s throughout the entire bay area,

pretty much, except for the bay, which tends to stay in those 40s. look at san jose, 37 degrees. down through morgan hill, 34, up through concord 34 degrees, napa, santa rosa, also in the 30s. how are we shaping out compared to the stormy east? let's take a look. i love comparing this. it gives you a good perspective. they had a historic snowstorm that really impacted them yesterday and the current temperatures right now in through the east coast, 16 degrees, up through green bay, remember when the 9ers beat the green bay packers, 20 degrees, louisville 34, atlanta, 39. and we're not going to be worried about the cold if you're heading down to southern california for the big game. if you're on your way out, we've got sunshine. right now we are expecting 70s by kick-off, if you're tailgating it will be sunny, 65 degrees, comfortable weather. no worries about any rain. and if you're going to be here locally and you have any outdoor parties, keep in mind that we are seeing some issues with pollen so you might notice your

allergies acting up. pine, mold and cedar, you can see high to moderate, weeds and grasses are low. temperature outlook, by 11:30, we'll be in the upper 50s and by 1:30 we start to see some of the 60s through los gatos, san jose, and daytime highs will be topping out in the low to mid-60s and a couple of upper 50s as well in through the afternoon. by tonight into early tomorrow, once again we are expecting to wake up to cold 30s. one more thing you're going to notice. even though we're going to stay dry, we are going to see increasing winds, especially by tuesday night. take a look at santa rosa and napa. the wind gusts begin to kick up 20 plus miles per hour. long-range outlook, the dry weather continues, offshore winds are going to be the biggest impact. high pressure has been keeping any chance of rain for us to our north and south and it looks like we're dry note. over the next seven days we're looking good, sunshine, thanks.

we're going to play as hard as we can and we'll see who makes the least mistakes. >> the rams have found ways to win the last two weeks and they're as dangerous as ever with stars all over the field. that's all we're focused on, is the opportunity to play football against the rams, a division rival. >> reporter: today's nfc championship game kicks off at 3:30. back in the bay, the warriors on the court against the brooklyn nets without the injured kevin durant. tied at 93 in the fourth quarter, steph curry buries it. now we move to, with under 15 seconds to go, a one-point game. clay thompson with the splash and dagger. the warriors cut down the nets 110-106. on the ice, the sharks on the road in florida, tied 4-4 in overtime. sam bennett lights the lamp. that's the game winner. the sharks blow a 4-2 lead and fall to the panthers in

overtime. san jose back on the ice today. the 49ers are playing the biggest game of the season, the nfc championship against the rams. the winner moves on to super bowl lvi. kick-off is set for 3:30. that's a look at sports. i'm anthony flores for "today in the bay." >> thank you. we also spoke with 49ers insider matt maiocco ahead of the game. he tells us with a six-game winning streak against the rams, the 9ers will have to put up a strong fight to secure the win today. >> the rams have talent across the board and these teams know each other very well. one of the things that jimmy garoppolo and the offense knows is that the rams feature some great pass rushers, aaron donald, von miller coming to the team midseason. they'll get pressure on the quarterback, they'll want to run the ball and make this a physical game. in those passing situations, garoppolo knows he doesn't have

a whole lot of time to throw. he's got to get the ball out quickly to playmakers, samuel, kittle and others to let them know the rest. >> you want to make the week as normal as possible. the one thing that didn't exist back when i played was, for the most part, the internet. and you didn't have twitter and you didn't have all these things. so i think for the most part, for guys to focus on watching game film, talk to your teammates, focus on the game plan, and probably stay away from social media is the greatest way to kind of keep your focus. try to keep it like a normal week. >> and that was former 49ers tight end brent jones, who played in three super bowls and. he understands the pressure the 9ers must feel as they go into sofi stadium today. the "l.a. times" reports that the ticket resale site vivid seats is estimating that 65% of

i want to show you a live look in san francisco at coit tower. how cold are we when you head out the door? let's take a look at satellite radar and see what's going on. we've had high pressure that's been dominating over the bay area, keeping any chance of rain to our north and south. today we're going to see some clouds move in and we do have some limited visibility, mainly up through parts of novato, santa rosa and the napa area. if you're going to be heading to the north bay, you'll see fog lingering for the first half of the mornings. 37 degrees right now in san jose, 34 for morgan hill, 37 in livermore, concord 34. what can we expect for the big game? if you're going to be here, you're going to be enjoying sunshine. if you're heading to the game right now, before heading out the door, sunshine, 70s in the forecast. big game today, great weather, can't complain. it stays in california when it comes to the sunshine. if you're going to be here doing an outside party, keep in mind

the allergies have been acting up for a reason. pine and mold have been moderate, cedar has been high and weeds and grasses have been low. as far as your temperature outlook, by 12:00 we'll be in the upper 50s and we're going to top out pretty much in the low to mid-60s at times through the interior valleys, into early monday morning, once again waking up to 30s. similar conditions. the biggest change heading into the workweek ahead is going to be the wind. we stay calm through monday, and then monday night into tuesday we start to see offshore winds pick up. look at santa rosa at 22 plus, through napa, 31 plus miles per hour. as far as your long-range outlook right now, the first week of february, dry weather will continue and offshore winds ahead. mainly into tuesday and wednesday. we're going to stay breezy, so it will start to kick up monday evening, it will get breezy, and then really into tuesday and wednesday we're going to see dry wind from the northeast. 15 to 5 miles per hour.

mother, who told us those reports are not true. brady also reached out to the bucs general manager to say that he hasn't made a decision yet. brady's agents also issued a statement that says, in part, without getting into the accuracy or inaccuracy of what's being reported, tom will be the only person to express his plans with complete accuracy. with the announced departure from the supreme court by justice stephen breyer, president biden has begun a search for his replacement and he said it will be a black woman. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us. good morning to you. how much influence will that newest member have on the other justices? >> well, good morning, kira. these things are so hard to know and so much of it depends upon chemistry. we know, as you said, the president is going to appoint an african american woman. that will make, by the way, four women on the court. of course, the first time in the court's history.

and you kind of wonder whether there will be some sort of cross-pollination between the women of various political backgrounds. that will be something to watch. >> what is the difference there, and, you know, is it important? >> yeah, there's no question that the difference is there, and, yes, it's important. conservatives dominate the court, 6-3 majority, including the replacement who will be put on by the president. when you talk about conservatives, these are folks who look at the constitution very narrowly. there are people who don't want to talk about what's not written in tpl the president's vaccination rule was exited by the court because they said we don't see anything like this in the constitution. liberals view it in terms of broad interpretation, the equal protection clause is a good example where they look like things like voting, employment, clean air, transgender rights. all these things are fair game and should be taken care of because of the broad interpretation.

so depending on how you look at the constitution, you're going to get very different opinions. >> so, you know, technically they are supposed to side with the constitution, but with the 6-3 conservative majority, there surely are examples of the direction that majority is taking in the country. >> yeah, and they're siding with the constitution and they're siding with the constitution. both are right, they're just looking at it differently. here's what you can look for in the next year or two or five or ten, voting access, which has been denied by the courts in terms of taking away the rights from the states to deal with it, that's going to continue to be an issue as the states continue, many of them to rescind issues, particularly for people of color. narrowing a woman's right to choose. the supreme court has backed off and said we're going to let the states handle that. we don't see that in the constitution. things like affirmative action,

the supreme court has been dealing with this for a while, narrowing what affirmative action means. we've got a case before the supreme court now and it looks like this is going to be kaput when it comes to affirmative action. the supreme court is saying when you look at the constitution, this conservative majority says we just don't see these things are under the auspices of the federal government. so we leave them to the states, and with that you see a very big variety in terms of the policies that have come out. >> so how fair is that, really, to leave it up to the states themselves? because these decisions or non-decisions are having serious impacts on the american public. >> you know, kira, that's such a great question and it depends on who you ask. if you're talking to a conservative, they're saying, my gosh, it's about time. we've dealt with a liberal court for so many years, now we're having a court deal with things the way they like them to be done. if you're talking to a liberal, they're saying, my goodness, for years we've had a court who has looked out for individual rights

and tried to protect the rights of those, and those things are gone. courts change over time and the composition depends on who puts them there. the president. and let's remember, the president, donald trump, had the unusual opportunity of adding three justices of the nine, and with that we've seen a court which was tilting conservative going very conservative. so conservatives have their day, liberals are going to have to wait for another time. >> and that's just how it happens. that's how it's gone since it began. larry, as always, thanks for your input. we look forward to seeing you next week. 7:52, up next, aick-off to the championship game. the 9ers fans invasion in l.a. and coming up, one final look at your sunny forecast, but also theics extended outlook for the first week of february. stay with us.
