good morning >> good morning to you yeah this snow started falling late last night. not expected to taper off until late this afternoon but we're talking about 2,000 mile stretch from the mexico border to variety. here in chicago you can see the snow already this wet snow piling up. but keep in mind this is just the first of a one-two punch storm that is expected in the coming days. overnight the first flakes starting to fly. beginning of yet another winter wallop more than 90 million americans across 19 states are in the cross hairs of what could be the biggest storm of the season. >> travel will become dangerous, if not impossible. >> reporter: dangerous road conditions in denver already causing accidents. in illinois the governor issuing a disaster declaration, warning some parpts of the state could get up to 20 inches of snow. in detroit where up to 16 inches of snow could fall, schools are making plans to go virtual. >> i don't like the snow and i'm 60 years old i ain't never seen 15 inches of snow in my life. >> reporter: detroit's mayor activating snow emergency

us under some sort of winter weather advisory, storm watch, storm warning or ice warning you can see now changing over, springfield, st. louis already into the heavy snow in chicago detroit is going to be involved. so today, tonight the front moves across lone star state freezing rain from texas to ohio straining power grids all the way from texas into the mid west snow covered roads, low visible. we're looking for heavy snow again stretching all the way from texas into missouri today 3-6 inches o snow. 2-4 in oklahoma city 6-10 in kansas city. tomorrow this frontal system moves slowly, that's the big problem, south and east. heavy rain from birmingham difficult travel ice amounts. look at this swath of upwards of half an inch of ice. with snow, heavy snow, 6-12 inches in the mid west 7-11 in detroit. 2-4 in cincinnati. 8-12 for cleveland friday heavy snow upstate new york and new england rain, sleet and snow moving to the east by the time we get into friday, flash freeze warnings for parts of massachusetts a heavy, wet snow for some areas in new england

good morning. >> listen to these stats 3 1/2 million confirmed pediatric cases last month alone. two weeks ago 100,000 younger children hospitalized with covid. a quarter of all parents say their kids had to quarantine in january due to covid exposure. so the fda is feeling the urgency, but with vaccination rates rather low among those eligible, this morning many parents are torn over whether to heed doctors advice and vaccinate their youngest kids. this morning, millions of children under 5 are one step closer to becoming eligible for the covid vaccine. the advisory panel will meet february 15th to consider pfizer's request for emergency use for kids 6 months through 4 years old. the prospect that shots could soon be within arms reach for small children bringing hope and relief to many families. >> as a parent i need to do everything possible.

>> reporter: this family has two kids under the age of 5. and mom says assuming the data shows the shots are safe and effective, her kids will get vaccinated immediately >> it is one ol only things we can do to protect our children who aren't old enough to mask effectively, you know, who really can't surround themselves with vaccinated people. >> reporter: but a new study finds many parents remain cautious about the covid vaccine. just 31% say they'd vaccinate kids under 5 right away. 29% will wait and see. and 26% say they will definitely not vaccinate their youngest kids one potential concern. in a clinical trial, two doses failed to produce a strong immune response among kids 2-4 instead only kids between 6 months and 2 years had a response comparable to that of older kids and younger adults. continuing research on whether

three dose would provide even more protection. dr. paul offette is on the vaccine committee that evaluates safe. >> we want to make sure the vaccine works and is is a safe before we'd ever recommend it for america's children. >> reporter: the american academy of pediatrics is urging parents to talk to their doctor if they have any concerns. >> the covid vaccine, if anything is under more scrutiny than ever before and we just haven't seen major concerns with safety of these vaccines >> reporter: pfizer's ceo says ultimately researchers believe three doses of the vaccine will be the standard for the country's smallest children. but if two shots are authorized soon, the hope is that parents may get a head start to begin building immunity among young children until that third dose ups the protection even more again, a decision could come by the first of march or so, hoda. >> tom thank you. let's bring in dr. ashish zha. it is great to see you i'm just imagining a young mom

watching that piece and wondering should i get it or not for my child people want to know what the data is. we said consult a doctor. we'll consult you. what kind of advice would you give to that mom. >> good morning hoda. thanks for having me. first let's look at the data. we have not seen the data out yet. we'll see that the next couple of weeks. the advisory committee, if they vote to support it, i think it's going to be based on the fact it is clearly going to be safe and effective. it has to be. otherwise the committee will turn it down. and america's pediatrician, i'm looking to them to see what their advice is. i expect this will be authorized but we'll have to see what the evidence is and we're going to want to be guided by that and advice of the doctors.

>> say the data does say that it is effective. even in kids 5-11. only 29% of those kids have gotten one dose. so the data we just showed, showed that most parents of younger kids than that are either on the fence or would say no. if it is proven effective, how could you even begin to convince those parents that it is a good idea? >> yeah it is a really good question. i have a 10 year old who's been vaccinated and i'm thankful for that and the reason he was is because the evidence was so clear. what i would say to parents and what i say to parents all the time. is look at the data. talk to your pediatrician. for me the evidence is very clear. kids should be getting vaccinated against this disease, but if you have questions or concerns, there is nobody better than your pediatrician or family physician to give you the advice how to best take care of your child. >> quick doctor, let's hit on masks for a second. i feel like covid numbers are dropping, things are trending in the right direction. there are lots of still mask mandates all around. do you think it is time to relax some of those mask mandates given the numbers? >> yeah, hoda, it's a great

question. i think as numbers come down. i don't know right now would be the time but i think in the next couple of weeks if infection numbers keep doing what i expect them to do and they get very very low. i think it is completely reasonable to relax mask mandates for everybody. and i expect a lot of states will do that. >> okay. all right. dr. jha. thank you for your expertise this morning. appreciate you joining us. >> thank you. we turn now to grief and heartbreak. a small college in virginia where a gunman opened fire killing two beloved campus security officers. the pair not only coworkers but also close friends. nbc national correspondent gave gabe gutierrez has details. >> reporter: overnight police identified the suspect they say opened fire at bridgewater college in virginia but so far they don't have a motive. we're also learning more about the officer who is rushed into help and gave their lives to save others. this morning a close knit campus remembering its dynamic duo. a loving nickname for police

officer john painter and safety officer j.j. jefferson, shot and killed tuesday at bridgewater college in virginia. >> they were very well known to students. they were always seen together. >> reporter: state police say the officers were responding to 9-1-1 calls to a suspicious man on campus when things quick turned violent. >> after a brief interaction with the man, the subject opened fire and shot both officers. >> reporter: about 1,500 students forced to shelter in place as multiple law enforcement agencies converged on the small liberal arts school about 140 miles southwest of washington, d.c. >> two suspects down on the ground. >> reporter: junior alex was in class when shots rang out. >> all of a sudden we hear what is unmistakably gunshots. several in a row. >> reporter: the man hunt leading police to a nearby river. this dramatic photo showing the

moment officers closed in on the suspect. the suspect, 27 year old alexander campbell, is facing murder charges. it is not clear if he was a student at bridgewater or has any connection tot school. that shooting came on a dangerous day on campuses. in richfield, minnesota, one student died and another in critical condition after a shooting at app education center. two suspects there are in custody. in virginia this morning, so many questions remain about a motivate and why two close friends and law enforcement colleagues lost their lives. officials revealing officer painter had been the best man at officer jefferson's wedding. this shooting is just the latest incident of violence against law enforcement nationwide in recent weeks. here in new york another funeral will be held today at st. patrick's cathedral for the second nypd officer killed earlier this month while responding to a domestic violence call. >> the bond between these two makes it all the more heartbreaking, gabe, thank you

so much. overseas more to get to. >> new twists in the escalating tensions surrounding russia's troop build up. u.s. and russia agreeing to move ahead with diplomatic talks and vladimir putin is addressing the situation for the first time in more than a month. richard engel is iuke rafor us once again. richard, good morning. >> good morning. until these latest comments, vladimir putin hadn't spoken publicly about ukraine since december. even though the whole world is talking about ukraine. negotiations have been going on to deescalate the crisis. vladimir putin accused the west of stoking tensions and increasing fears. as russia strengthens its military presence in belarus, north of ukraine, striking

distance of the ukrainian capital kyiv, russian president vladimir putin broke his silence. in a press statement he rejected the u.s. and nato's diplomatic proposals. putin saying russian's concerns were basically ignored. he laid out his demands, unchanged even after weeks of negotiations across europe. no further nato expansion. no offensive weapons by russia's borders and nato returning to the 1997 stats quo he said. that would mean lopping off most of eastern europe and the baltics from nato. putin is famously covid cautious. the hungarian prime minister said he'd never had a meeting so far apart.

nbc's morgan chesky has details for us. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the claims inside this lawsuit are absolutely serious. brian flores one of two african american coaches in the nfl until he was fired after two straight winning seasons. and in the lawsuit flores claims the nfl is still segregated. and one of the sharpest minds bill belichick inadvertently sent a text to flores confusing him with someone else. this morning the nfl on defense on its stunning claims. the league and several teams named in a class action lawsuit. alleging discrimination against black coaches. the suit filed by former miami dolphins head coach front nine flores who was fired last month after three years on the job. >> we've had ups and downs, it is a year i'll certainly remember. >> reporter: the suit takes aim at the new york giants. the suit says the team had already decided to hire brian

now to a controversy over which book should be allowed in texas schools. an nbc news investigation uncovered parents and politicians leading an unprecedented effort to ban books from school libraries, many focusing on race, gender and sexuality. nbc has been following. >> reporter: it is one of the biggest book challenges in decades, altering school libraries across texas we visited a diverse school district near houston with more than 85,000 students since the fall, more than half of the books banned by administrators there have been about lgbt people. the statewide push is largely being led by parents and now getting pushback from students and authors. this morning, texas schools are at the center of a national fight over banned books. an nbc news investigation finding that at least a dozen texas districts have removed books about race, gender and sexuality after a surge of parent complaints. >> why are we sexualizing our precious children. >> reporter: since the fall, irish chang, a junior who identifies as queer has watched books banished from her school

charles hunter iii they are called lace hoke cakes. you might wonder what is that name about in the antebellum period africans would take the metal part from the hoe used in the fields and you could remove it put it over open fire and put a little fat on there and people could have a mixture of corn meal and fried on the hoe and you had these delicious flap cakes. that is the inspiration. this is ubiquitous in african american cuisine johnny cakes is one of the terms. should i get started >> yes. >> let me just say this. if you have corn if we were in the summertime we'd add fresh corn. but because we're in dead of

winter we're going to omit the corn we have onions that have been sauteed until they are translucent. i'm going add black pepper, salt, and then some garlic corn meal. lightly beaten egg buttermilk and a little butter and through the magic of tv we have everything already combined once everything is combined, we simply want to give it a good stir and you don't want to overstir it o you want to stir it until it

is just mixed where you can actually add everything in this pot in here. and yeah, it is simply a matter of cooking the cakes after that. the thing i said, you know, this is slow and low. kind of like barbecue. you want to cook these slowly and not too much because you don't want the outside to be cooked and then you have this kind of cakey inside once this is cooked, we want to put the heat on, i don't know, medium heat. medium high. and then we simply take a sweeper. and then we can add this. >> yum. >> to our pan. let me just show you guys. >> let's see, let's see. >> -- going on there you don't want to overcrowd the pan. do a couple of cakes at a time once they are done what i like to do is keep the oven on low heat and just kind of store the cakes in there as i'm cooking so that once everything is cooked. >> and do you serve them just like that? >> oh no we got to put a little -- what we're going to do for this one, the molasses butter. we have our butter here. i am going to add some molasses
