a monster storm with the biggest concern, dangerous ice followed by heavy snow as the 2,000-mile storm unleashes a mess for tens of millions. the biden administration is beefing up u.s. troop numbers and repositioning american forces in eastern eupe as russia leaves the world guessing on their next move speaking out former nfl head coach brian flores tells his side of the story on what's being called a sham interview process and what he wants to see happen next. facebook stock craters 20% taking a big chunk of the nasdaq futures along with it.

"early today" starts right now >> thanks for being up early with us. >> a dangerous mix of snow and ice is threatening about a third of the country right now as a monster storm has triggered over 100 million winter weather alerts stretching from new mexico to maine. the forecasters expect the blizzard conditions to bring upwards of 20 inches of snow in some areas but it's the build up of ice that's raising a lot of alarms these dangerous conditions are coming to some areas that are not used to it >> three people were hurt in this rollover crash in texas, and over 40,000 power outages are already being reported in the lone star state. let's get the latest on this storm's path from nbc meteorologist janessa webb good morning >> hi, good morning. i do one more element. we do have a severe weather

risk seeing high surf across the deep south, going to watch for potential heavy-duty rain in that area. you can see the ice accumulation from snow to rain where we're dealing with flash flood watches across the upper tennessee valley temperatures really fluctuating with this storm. dallas currently 26 degrees. for the houston area we're in the lower 40s so you have that mixed bag of precipitation along this front that will continue from texas to maine where you see that dividing line but what we dealt with yesterday was just round one round two is starting to rev up and snow accumulation along with ice accumulation will be significantly huge this afternoon. right now we are talking about a quarter of an inch of ice spreading across little rock to the pittsburgh area. we could see about a tenth of an inch for boston to new york. and any ice accumulation is very dangerous, so going to be watching for widespread power outages across the area.

still haven't talked about snow accumulation we'll talk about that coming up. >> a whole lot still to cover. breaking overnight, a shooting inside a greyhound bus parked at a convenience store in california has left one person dead at least four others were injured according to police. the suspect took off before officers arrived on the scene. they then received 911 calls the suspected shooter was inside a nearby wal-mart. authorities took him into custody inside the store in a statement to nbc news greyhound says its main concern is the safety of the driver and passengers and that the company is working closely with authorities. in virginia the suspect accused of fatally shooting two campus officers at bridgewater college made his first court appearance yesterday the 24-year-old former student was arraigned on murder charges. the small private college said the two slain officers were good friends and were known on campus as the dynamic duo thousands of mourners gathered in midtown manhattan

this time to pay respects to wilbert mora, a 25-year-old officer killed while answering the call for help. at the funeral he was promoted to detective mora was described as a gentle giant who dedicated his life to serving others >> at mora's funeral mayor eric adams promised to eradicate gun violence that promise will be front and center today as the president heads to meet with the governor and mayor. we've seen a surge in violent crimes across the country. >> reporter: that's right, cori. homicides rose 5% last year compared to 2020 in january alone new york homicides dropped compared to last year, but other major crimes are up 38% in 2022 according to the nypd. the city has seen more shootings

and hate crimes have spiked nearly 80% rape, robbery and felony assaults are also on the rise. mayor eric adams ran on a message of security and says public safety is his top priority >> no one will divide this city with their violence, in fact, they're going to unite us, to come together and end this we're going to find these guns, and we're going to find those who carry them and use them. we are committed to ending this violence >> reporter: today president biden will talk to mailer adams about his administration's strategy to combat gun crime, which includes funding to put more cops on the street and invest in violence prevention as well as new federal efforts to stop illegal gun trafficking attorney general merrick garland will also be there in new york at the meeting with the president to help detail the plan back to you, cori. >> okay, it's going to be a very

important agenda brie, we appreciate it the world is guessing what russia's next move will be in its standoff against ukraine the country has amassed more than 100,000 troops on its neighbor's doorstep with the threat of an invasion looming. but the u.s. is throwing its support behind its nato allies by sending more troops to eastern europe nbc's kristen welker has the latest >> reporter: in a show of force president biden deploying 3,000 u.s. troops to eastern europe with fears escalating russia could invade ukraine the pentagon sending 1,000 soldiers based in germany will be deployed to romania, and 2,000 troops will go to poland and germany. 8,500 u.s. troops had already been placed on high alert with over 100,000 russian troops amassed along the ukrainian border new satellite imagery appearing to show those forces growing

>> we do not know if russia has made a final decision to further invade ukraine, but it clearly has that capability. >> reporter: the president has ruled out a combat deployment to ukraine saying putin's actions prompted his move. >> as long as he's acting aggressively we're going to make sure we reassure our nato allies in eastern europe that we're there. >> reporter: the kremlin calling the troop deployments unfounded and destructive. it comes after a defiant vladimir putin said the u.s. has failed to meet his security demands including that ukraine be barred from joining nato, but he also insisted he does not plan to invade ukraine and is open to more diplomatic talks. meanwhile nbc's aaron mclaughlin getting a rare look on ukraine's border with belarus. >> over that way there's belarus with thousands of russian troops with only a handful of border patrol standing guard on this side >> reporter: and getting mixed reaction from people there >> are you worried about war >> reporter: no, this storeowner

brian daboll, just making sure he replied sorry, i blanked this up when you realized he meant to send that text message to someone else what went through your head? >> i was humiliated. >> reporter: the giants are defending their hiring practices. ultimately we hired the individual we felt was most qualified. flores also alleges miami dolphins owner steven ross offered to pay him $100,000 per loss in 2019 to improve the team's draft position. >> that's disrespect to the game >> reporter: the dolphins deny any racial discrimination and write that the implication that we acted in a manner inconsistent with the integrity of the game is incorrect flores now knows he's risking his career >> we can make changes to this system, this -- and give more opportunities to black and minority coaches, real opportunities i think it'll be worth it >> reporter: the nfl says flores' claims are without merit.
