gold this morning. well, we're going to talk about it. this is "today in the bay." >> pretty exciting time. good thursday morning to you. early right now. 4:30. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington broadcasting not only here on television but also live on roku, amazon fire and apple tv and online. let's start out with the forecast. meteorologist kari hall monitoring what we can expect with the temperatures today. >> it's a cold start across the bay area. let's check out fremont right now. we're in the low 40s, and we'll see a few clouds here and there, and also some peaks of sunshine going into late morning and afternoon. low and hoy temperatures head for the low 60s and around the bay area today it's going to be a chilly morning at least. we do have calmer winds in the forecast today are and we're headed for the upper 50s in spots like san matteo, san francisco also in the upper 50s, but then head over towards the

east bay, we'll see some low 60s for this afternoon. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend coming up. mike is here now for a look at the early morning commute. >> light winds in the report. no major incidents, thank goodness, going on. as we look out to the maps we're pointing out the altamont pass where they are pointing out green sensors at speed. chp said overnight a gust or two did catch them. no delays out of vasco road and contra costa county and dunbarton bridge may have some construction clearing south of there as well. >> thanks, mike. breaking news out of san francisco this morning. two people are injured, more than 20 displaced after an early morning fire in the heart of the mission district. this is video from citizens app. the fire damaged a four-story building right at mission and

16th streets. firefighters say the building includes the popular business on the ground floor that started a little after midnight and it took firefighters more than an hour to control. two people suffered smoke inhalation, we're told. 13 units are damaged, and right now there's no confirmation on what even started this fire, but there are reports it may have started with burning debris outside the building. well, developing now, a bay-area man is in a comb ark fighting for his life. he was found wearing a 49ers jersey and beaten in the parking lot of sofi stadium in los angeles during last weekend's 49/rams game. >> daniel luna, a popular oakland chef, is in critical condition. "today in the bay requests "terry mcsweeney has more on what we known. >> reporter: 409-year-old is owner of this restaurant here in inglewood. he was found badly beaten in the

stadium parking lot during the first quarter of the nfc championship game. luna wearing a 49ersgers he injuries to his face, upper body and was taken to the hospital and a couple hours went by before police said he was assaulted. vetors don't have a motive and don't think luna was attacked because of his 49ers gear. luna is hoping for something that will show motive and will help solve the case. >> we're working with sofi security in obtaining surveillance footage which will hopefully have captured this incident and lead us to the person or persons responsible. >> reporter: luna in critical but stable condition right now in a medically induced coma. his family is with him, of course. many people can't help but remember the assault on bryan stow, a bay area giants fan who was viciously beaten in the dodgers parking lot back in 2011. stowe sustained brain injuries and his attackers were caught.

the south bay mother accused of throwing out-of-control parties for minors is set to return to court. the last time shannon o'connor argued that her no bail els hold violates her constitutional rights. prosecutors are calling her an at-risk person. she's awaiting trial on dozens of charges, including child endangerment and sexual battery. take a live look this morning at sfo. this is where some airlines are asking the white house to drop the covid mandate testing to show the u.s. right now have you to show a negative test 24 hours before the flight. a left was sent to the white house by the airline lobbying group requesting that change. passengers say it's trick toe try to figure out how to test when traveling to another country. >> it's a challenge. it's hard. it's difficult but it's for the greater good. we should play it safe. >> i definitely think within 24

business world. >> thanks, mike. >> i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. we've got wall street set to open locker and the nasdaq is really going to be the source of the pain as tech stocks come under pressure after facebook's parent company meta reported disappointing earnings. this comes after the market extended its winning streak to four straight days. we saw the dow rights more than 200 points yesterday and the s&p was actually up about 1% and the nasdaq half 5% coming on the heels of alphabet. that's google's parent companies blowing out earnings in the afternoon before. now in focus this morning, we're waiting for reports on unemployment, productivity, factory orders and the service sector plus we've gotten earnings so far from eli lilly and merck and amazon and ford are on tap. getting back to that meta story. investors wiped out about $180

billion from the market value of facebook's parent. to give you an idea of how big that is. that's bigger than at&t's whole market cap. meta platforms warning users that are are spending more time on other apps such as tiktok. facebook, in fact, lost daily users for the first time during a quarter in its history. ceo mark zuckerberg says increasing competition will put pressure on meta's advertising business. certainly on the reality lab side where they are investing. there's a lot of losses there as well. the stock down about 20% in pre-market trading, and if those losses hold today, it will be the worst day since facebook went public back in 2012. speaking of other media companies in social media, twitter is apparently working on a new featurecality articles.

waking up and heading out. we have a cold start this morning, but it's all clear and still maybe a little bit of a breeze, but the wind will be much calmer as we go into today. yesterday we heard from the groundhog and what it's expecting for our season. let's take a look at what the climate prediction center says for the month of february. so it shows our temperature outlook will be a little bit warmer than normal. we've had some cool weather lately. it's actually been right where we should have our temperatures for late january into early february, but it does look warmer as we head through the forecast and that may continue throughout the rest money. as far as rainfall. we know it's been dry and that also looks like it will persist through the next several weeks across the bay area, unfortunately. let's talk about our temperatures. los gatos, temperatures in the low 67s. not a huge range from the coast to inland areas and we look at pleasanton. up to 60 degrees today and then

near the coast we have a high of 59 in half moon bay. san francisco also seeing temperatures near 60 degrees today, and that breeze will keep the temperatures from feeling so chilly like we've had with napa today reaching 36. >> also no change in our weather pattern. a strong area of high pressure still keeping the rain away from us and steering it farther north. that's part of the reason why we do expect this dry weather to persist and as of now we've seen some improvement and we're still in a severe brought across the area, and we may see the change. the update comes up in about a minute. if you missed it i'll post it on social media and still looking at extremely dry conditions here even as we go into the next couple of weeks as we see the sunshine, it and take a look at that temperature trend headed for the low 70s. >> you're attracting a little

now, so a new report done by the city shows that more than 40,000 housing units are empty, about 10% of the available housing in the city. for the majority not affordable. well, the city now considering what vancouver did to address the problem. >> they passed an empty home tax, and when vancouver did that, they actually saw the vacancy rates in the city by drop by over 20% once they instituted that tax, so we think that's the strongest thing that the city could do is to incentivize these owners to either rent out the property or sell it to someone who wants to live there. >> most housing advocates believe a tax would help solve the problem. >> teeing o.still ahead, a preview of the highly anticipated pebble beach pro-am and the famous faces expected to be spotted out on the green. >> after years of delays, it's
