. ♪♪ good morning. it is saturday, february 5th. 7:00 on the dot as we take a live look outside at the olympic flame in beijing where the winter games have kicked off. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. we will have a report from the olympics coming up in just a moment, but first meteorologist vianey arana joins us with a quick look at microclimate forecast. hey, vianey. >> hey, kira. it is nice but cold. it is nice because we are waking up on an early saturday morning. a live look in san francisco. the weekend is here but how are the temperatures doing as we

head out the door? in the 40s around the bay and the peninsula. 42 in redwood city. if you look at morgan hill, 34 degrees. san jose right now in the 30s, 38 degrees, all in through concord at 37. by this afternoon right now we are seeing clear conditions pretty much everywhere with the exception of a couple of spots including hayward near oakland and livermore as well as to concord, visibility down to about six miles, so some areas of patchy fog through there. by this afternoon we expect a mix of sun and clouds. i will guide you through the daytime highs in few minutes. kira. >> thank you so much. see you soon. did you see the opening ceremony last night in primetime right here on nbc bay area? the winter olympic games are underway in beijing and we have breaking news this morning from beijing where three-time olympic medal bobsledder elena myers taylor is now out of isolation. taylor received two negative

covid tests clearing the path for her to compete. hur husband and bay area nick taylor confirmed the news to nbc bay area's janelle wang who is in beijing. meyers taylor was supposed to carry the flag for the opening but was in isolation for covid. as mentioned, today is the first team of competition and team usa is competing in high-profile events in the snow and on the ice. today in the bay's jay gray joining us from olympic park in beijing with the latest. >> reporter: hey there. good morning, kira. yet no rest for team usa after the excitement of the opening ceremony 24 hours ago. the americans now in the hunt in several medal competitions as the games kick into high gear here. >> norway. claims gold. >> reporter: norway grabbing the first gold medal of the games, dominating the rugged women's cross country ski athlon. with a mad rush at the finish, american jessie diggins finishes

sixth, looking for her third straight gold medal, jeannie anderson leads a group into the slope finals tonight after a qualifying round that included some big air and big spills. >> the course is really gnarly. the snow is challenging. the wind is pretty gusty. yeah, it is a really challenging course. >> reporter: the challenge wasn't too big for one of america's youngest olympians, 18-year-old cole mcdonald with a strong run, qualifying for today's moguls final. >> i didn't even expect it. i was expecting to make one world cup this year and call it a great season. >> reporter: it is a great first full day of olympic action for team usa. after practice runs, men's single luge takes their first two competitive passes. women's hockey battles russia, looking for their second win in beijing. the resilient u.s. curling mixed doubles team continues its run in the round robin competition. yeah, every four years it is

amazing how curling really seems to catch on. everybody guess into the matches. it is a cool sport and fun to watch. the men's team, which won a surprise gold medal four years ago, is back to defend. jim schuster is the captain obviously and was the flag bearer during the opening ceremony. they've got a tough go though. great is bringing in a strong team. canada is always good, and sweden as well. it will be interesting to see how that tournament plays out. they are set to hit the ice early next week. kira. >> thanks, jay. here is a look at the medal count this morning. as jay mentioned, norway has won two gold medals in the winter games, in cross country skiing and the biathlon, followed by the russia olympic committee with one and austria with one. just this morning five-time olympian and three-time olympic gold medalist shaun white

announced this will be his last olympics. white told the media today he will retire from snowboarding after these 2022 winter games. the 35-year-old snowboarder says he is ready to give his all in this competition and he has nothing left to prove. you can sign up for our winter olympics newsletter. each day you will receive the latest from beijing including what events to watch out for and updates on our bay area athletes. just go to nbcbayarea.com. click on the link in our trending bar. turning now to developing news, the northbound lanes on interstate 880 in the east bay are back open this morning. this is a live look for you following another deadly shooting overnight. the chp tells us at first they thought it was a car accident when a driver swerved off 880 in oakland and crashed near the broadway exit. it wasn't until police and fire crews arrived that crews discovered the driver had been shot. traffic, as you see here, was

backed up for hours. as today in the bay's thom jensen reports, this is the fourth deadly shooting in recent months in that same area. >> reporter: oakland fire officials told nbc bay area witnesses saw the victim's vehicle swerving across all of the northbound lanes of the freeway before smashing into a freeway divider. she said it appeared to be a medical emergency and there were no reports of anyone hearing gunfire. when oakland firefighters got close to the car they realized it was another deadly shooting. >> it was a bullet hole that was noticed, observed through the driver's side window. then once they determined that the individual was deceased and that they were shot, it appears to be a single bullet. >> reporter: nbc bay area's investigative unit analyzed chp data on bay area freeway shootings and found they more than doubled over the past two years with 178 incidents in 2021 compared to 82 in 2019.

last month david nguyen was shot and killed in a similar incident on i-580. a 23-month-old boy, jasper wu, was shot and killed on i-880 in november. a few weeks later 29d-year-old amani morris was wounded in a shooting near the bay bridge toll plaza. all remain unsolved. thom jensen, today in the bay. thom mentioned david nguyen who was shot and killed a little more than a month ago. just yesterday nguyen was supposed to graduate from the sheriff's academy. instead his fellow recruits you see here were sworn in in dublin. the sheriff thanked the class for supporting nguyen's family and his sister you see here, barbara was there and named an honorary deputy. there remains a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of nguyen's killer. the man accused of badly injuring a 49ers' fan who is now in a coma is no longer in

custody. this is 33-year-old brian fuentes of los angeles. he surrendered to officers on thursday after surveillance video showed him pushing and then punching daniel luna of oakland during last week's nfc championship game at sofi stadium. he faces a felony assault charge and is out on $30,000 bond. inglewood's mayor says surveillance video shows that luna started the altercation by pushing fuentes. he then pushed luna back and punched him. luna fell, hitting his head on the pavement. luna suffered a serious head injury and is in a medically induced coma. he is the chef and owner of a peruvian restaurant in oakland. turning now to new covid allowances in contra costa county where you no longer have to show proof of vaccination or a negative covid test to go into a restaurant or a gym, but masking is still required. today in the bay's cheryl hurd

has more. >> reporter: the rules have constantly been changing during this pandemic for the past two years. contra costa county is a part of it tonight, and i can't find anyone who is not happy about it. tonight in downtown walnut creek people were masking up before walking into restaurants, and for the first time in about five months there's one thing people are no longer required to do. that's show proof of vaccination or verify negative covid test results. >> i think it has been long enough to where everyone's been vaccinated already. >> reporter: that's exactly how the contra costa county health officer feels, and the reason why the mandate was lifted today. >> since september, two main things have changed. the first is our community is more vaccinated now. we have 80 percent of the entire county is vaccinated. 87 percent has had at least one dose. >> reporter: this new rule applies to gyms and restaurants.

wearing a mask inside those businesses is still required. coffee shop owner janae mccullough says she found out about the new rule when she got an alert on her phone. >> i threw up my homes and i was like, yes. i was in tellus and i screamed it and almost started crying, just because we've not a unique experience but a difficult time with having to be the enforcers of this mandate. >> when i went out tonight i was wondering, do the restaurants know? how are they notified? am i going to get confronted about showing my proof of vaccine or not. >> reporter: he says he was asked for his vaccination card at one restaurants just minutes after he spoke to us because the manager there didn't know about the change. for charles askay, change when it comes to covid rules is what he has been waiting for. >> it is like one step back towards normalcy. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, today in bay. it is 7:10. we have much more ahead on today in the bay. turns out it is more than just location, location, location.

and even warmer tomorrow. now a live look for you in san francisco where the organization mothers against drug deaths, or madd, will hold a protest outside the city's new linkage center in the sender loin. it provides short and long-term services for people struggling with addiction and mental health issues. the group of moms who have lost children to drug deaths is demanding the portion of the linkage center where supervised drug use is taking place be closed. madd believes that all open-air drug scenes in san francisco and across california should be should down and that the framework is not working. the protest begins at 8:00 a.m. at u.n. plaza. can the covid vaccine help you sell your home? homes are selling faster in cities with higher vaccination rates. that's according to a new study from zillow. "today in the bay's" chris sanchez reports. >> reporter: good morning to

you, kira. we know there are a lot of open houses happening over the weekend, and if you are looking to sell fast you might have the best chance of doing that if you live in a place with a high vaccination rate. zillow did a new study and showed that higher vaccination rates do help to sell homes faster in certain areas. that study compares home sales in atlanta and san francisco. why? because atlanta has the lowest vaccination rate and san francisco has the highest. zillow says that shows that if atlanta has the same vaccination rate as san francisco, homes there might sell an average of two days faster. one zillow economist explains why the two phenomena may be linked. >> one reason it is having an impact on the speed of sales is it makes home transactions easier in places of high vaccination rates. more open houses are taking place. it is easier to interact in person in some of the markets. >> the full story is on nbc lx and you can watch at lx.com.

$94,000 on repairs and to build a fence to try and stop the pig's destruction. southwest airless announcing it will resume selling alcohol during flights starting wednesday, february 16th. you may recall sales were suspended early in the pandemic. passengers can now buy beer, wine and liquor on flights more than 170 miles. the selection of nonalcoholic drinks also is expanding to include tonic water, apple juice, hot tea and cocoa. trending this morning, valentine's day is just nine days away and if you are planning to do something special here in the bay area, well, let's hope you have been saving up. wallet hub has a list of the most expensive major cities to celebrate valentine's day, and guess what. san francisco comes in at number one. seattle, honolulu, orlando and san diego make up the top five. wallet hub bases its findings on 2017 metrics including restaurant costs as well as the number of jewelers and flower

shops per capita. the website estimates on average love birds are expected to spend $175 for valentine's day. let's check in with meteorologist vianey arana who joins us with a look at your full microclimate for cast. i won't put you on the spot for valentine's day. >> i mean that's a lot of money. if you are starting to get to know someone. >> it is. >> i can see how you are trying to impress, but if you have a partner, the key here is learn your partner's love language. it is not always gift giving. that's how to look at it for sure. check it out. san francisco, a great shot. we see high clouds in the area and it is cold as well the start, especially down to the south bay and the interior sheltered vals. san jose, 38 degrees. morgan hill, 34. dublin, 38. no major changes in the temperatures from the past 24 hours. we've pretty much been waking up to 30s and 40s. buff i do want to show you how this looks in perspective to the rest of the nation. so for us, we are pretty cold,

but look at that. they've been seeing the winter storm really impacting. the windchill factor has been really bad, down to single digits. at least for us we can't complain because we're not expecting any snow, though we could use rain. fog and visibility, again, we have high clouds but we are seeing limited visibility in through parts of livermore, concord and livermore. as far as satellite goes, we have had this high pressure blocking any chance of rain, keeping it to our north and our south, over the bay area. that's what has been keeping us dry. once some of the high clouds clear out we will get afternoon sunshine. temps will be in the mid 60s this afternoon. oakland, 64. san jose, 66. san francisco, 63. it is pretty calm when it comes to the wind gusts right now. we could see some breezy hills at times heading into tomorrow, but wind not a factor nor now anyway. air quality outlook will remain moderate from the north bay down through santa clara valley.

according to the bay area quality district we will stay in the upper 60, 70 range. if you look at the index scale up here it is between moderate. overall the long-range outlook, when can we expect to see any rain? well, the month of february is not looking very promising so far. that dry weather continues as we take this all the way through valentine's day, february 14th. that high pressure will continue to block any real chance of rain over the bay area, keeping us dry for the next several days. also, we have a warming trend that's going to warm us up heading into sunday and the start of the workweek as well. as far as your sunday, monday, tuesday forecast for san francisco, we are looking at mid 60s. upper 60s by tuesday. we might have been near the 70--degree mark for san francisco heading into wednesday. so it will be a lovely week to head to the city. yes, these are 70s on the inland seven-day forecast because of that warming trend. heading into monday and tuesday, overnight lows though still really cold. we have 70s ahead, kira.

johnson takes us to a black-owned winery and one local group looking to support them. >> it is a 30-acre former orchard, apple orchard in the heart of sebastopol. >> reporter: within the rolling hills and rows of produce is a story. >> so we moved here, took out all of the apples and put in grapes. over probably about a ten-year period. >> reporter: a story of a wine label that stood out from its peer not only for rose, chardonnays and others, but who was behind the label. >> we reviewed very well and we've got great awards through the years, but it is not about medals, it is about people coming and enjoying themselves. >> reporter: rosalind is one hand of the husband and wife duo behind fog crest vineyard and she is well aware of the uniqueness of her situation, being a black woman owning a 30-acre vineyard, a tasting room in sonoma and a production facility.

>> it is very hard to maintain or acquire all of those pieces. >> reporter: according to an article published by bloomberg, while the nation boasts about 8,000 wineries, less than one half of 1 percent of the wine makers or brands is black owned, a reality this vineyard owner faces head on. >> you own this? and i have to say, yes to that as well. you know, people would be very shocked by it. >> reporter: but manoogian, like some black-owned businesses, have seen an up tick in sales and interests. the civil unrest of 2020 put many black-owned businesses in the spotlight as did an organization well before 2020 in the black community. >> truly wanted to bring a space of love. >> reporter: home-grown organizations like black vines work to generate a new pool of consumers. >> introduce the reality that there are black wine makers out there. >> reporter: for the last 11 years, fern stroud has guided black vines into what felt like uncharted territory. in the decades since the group's

full day of competition, in just a moment. first, thank you for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist vianey arana joins us with a quick look at the forecast and another cold morning out there. >> indeed. we are in the 30s in some spots right now, and also the low to mid 40s. look at areas like concord, brentwood, dublin, livermore, 39 degrees right now. san jose, 38. down through morgan hill, 34. you are definitely feeling the cold factor as you step out the door. by the afternoon we have a couple of high clouds right now, we will eventually warm up right now, to the mid 60s by about 11:00, 12:00, we will be in the 50s. notice the high clouds linger. but we will get sunshine peeking through in the afternoon, not just for san jose but also san francisco. even though it is cloudy to start, temps will bump up into the upper 50s and by 1:00 or 2:00, more sunshine. i will take you through the full forecast in a few minutes. >> see you soon. thanks. we are going to begin with

the state's mask mandate is set to expire in ten days. happening today, sonoma county will be holding its second round of vaccine clinics at the county fair grounds. the sites will be open this morning and tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. county leaders are encouraging parents to bring eligible children to receive their vaccines, but anyone who is eligible may be vaccinated. the clinics will continue every weekend until february 20th. sonoma county also is getting ready to drop some of its covid restrictions on large gatherings. currently indoor gatherings must have fewer than 50 people and outdoor gatherings must be smaller than 100 people. both of those restrictions are set to expire this coming friday. well, as mentioned the winter olympic games are underway in beijing. we have a live look for you at the olympic flame somewhere behind that big snowflake

outside the bird's nest. today is the first full day of competition, and team usa is getting right to it in high-profile events on both the snow and the ice. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas takes a look at some olympic moments that are truly golden. >> reporter: we started this segment during the tokyo games and found, pardon the pun, plenty of gold to share. now, the games began with the opening ceremony so we'll start there as well. curler john shuster was one of two flag bearers for team usa. there is video of john, learning from his teammates he had been selected. you can hear john saying, my heart is beating so fast. what i want to show you though is what happened next. john face timing his family back home with the news. >> i have some news for you. >> what? >> i have been chosen to carry the flag for the united states.

>> oh! >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: lots of tears on both sides of that video call. our next story had to do with the opening ceremony as well, but for team usa by athlete nordgren walking into the stadium likely wasn't the biggest thing that happened to him that day. his wife kaitlyn back in vermont was expecting their first child the very same day. kaitlyn, who, by the way, is a meteorologist for an nbc station in vermont, says while the timing is less than ideal there was never a doubt in their family that lief, a three-time olympian, would go to the games which he expects to be his last. no word yet on the arrival of baby nordgren. speaking of children, we found one who -- we found one who is so eager to watch the olympic competition she started with the very first one, the preliminary round of curling. as you can see, she was an instant fan. perhaps it is a sport that looks something like mom or dad is doing around the house because the girl kept repeating, sweep,

out-the-door temperatures because when i say cold i mean 30s. look at this. san jose, 38 degrees. morgan hill, 34. in through concord, 37. san francisco right now is about at 48 degrees. so we will keep the high clouds lingering at least for the first half of the day before the sun starts to peek through. i want to show you satellite radar because we have been dry. we haven't seen any real rain for quite sometime, and we've had this high pressure that's been sitting over the region. really blocking any real chance of rain from making it here. so it has been keeping storms to the north and to our south. so as far as any real rain goes, well, we've got some ways to go before it looks like we see that. now, current temps might be in the 30s and 40s, but we are also seeing a little bit of fog in through concord, livermore area as well, down to about six miles in visibility. everywhere we are doing okay but noticing through tracee down to about five miles. temps will be running in the mid

60s. san francisco, 63. san jose, 66. we will warm up heading into sunday and monday. we are warm right now with the winds. it could get breezier, especially for the hills tomorrow, and if you are traveling to southern california they are seeing some really strong and gusty conditions down there. the santa ana winds. so be mindful of that. as far as your hair quality outlook goes, for the north bay even down to the santa clara valley we remain in the moderate air quality, in the 60s and 70s according to the aqi index scale. how is february looking? well, right now the model run is taking us all the way through february 14th, valentine's day. that high pressure is going to continue to sit over the bay area and that dry weather will continue. not only are we expecting dry weather, we are expecting temperatures to warm up as well. where does our sierra snow pack currently stand right now? we are at about 87% of statewide average. we're not expecting any rain any

work, at least not in the traditional sense. so what are they doing and how are they getting by? investigative reporter candice nguyen has some answers. >> reporter: it is a continuing trend, pivoting during the pandemic. i looked at data to see where it is all heading and spoke with people who say returning back to their old jobs just isn't an option anymore. as a bay area tech worker living in san francisco, michelle mack had a schedule many of us can relate to. >> i would go into the office, i would drive to san mateo for 30 minutes and lose an hour of my day. >> reporter: with covid hit, mak and millions of californians lost their jobs, she also became a new mom and started questioning her life's direction. >> what do i do about my career? how do i balance this? how do i make this work? >> reporter: during the pandemic and postpartum, mak did what many would consider surprising.

she launched her own business selling a baby schedule tracker. >> the mewl baby tracker. >> it has gotten so popular even other moms are posting reviews about it. >> this right here allows me to put it on my -- >> i feel like i will never go back to my old job only because i really enjoy creating products and having that passive income so that i could enjoy my time with my son. >> reporter: when you left, that meant your household income was cut by half. people want to know, how do you do it? >> i am really blessed and lucky to have a very supportive husband that doesn't give me the kind of pressure to, you've got to figure it out, you've got to go back to work. >> reporter: mak isn't the only one who started a business during the pandemic. the investigative unit obtained federal data showing more than a half million applications to form new businesses in california last year, an 18% increase from 2020, a sign the economy is picking up. but for most people who lost their jobs due to covid, starting a new company with half an income just isn't an option.

>> it really hit low-wage workers the hardest. >> reporter: dr. enrique lopez lira from uc berkeley point to california policy lab data showing low-wage employees from the pandemic's hardest hit sectors like accommodation and food services typically found different jobs in similar paying industries like retail while workers in science and tech sectors moved to publishing and data services. >> black and hispanic workers were already trailing in wages and income. women, especially those who are mothers or are taking care of other relatives, they've had to exit the workforce. those with lower education, high school diploma or less, have also been hurt more than college-educated workers. >> reporter: and there are workers who didn't return to their old jobs and might be suffering financially. dr. lopezlira says some had to retire early. others are unail to go back

because they don't have child or senior care, a problem exacerbated by the pandemic. >> do you think your journey would have been different if you didn't have the work experience, the education that you have? >> yeah, i feel like because i came from an e-commerce background, my cousin is also an amazon seller, i had those short cuts. i understood what the data meant, i understood how technology work. >> reporter: which is why she gives back. she donates a percentage to a nonprofit and connects with complete strangers looking to pivot. people like u.s. air force veteran from bacaville trying to market his creation, the surf sheet. >> she has been like a mentor and a coach. you know, she is able to look at my website, my listings and give it a critical review. >> i have actually felt i have connected with more people that i have never known or met before. >> reporter: dr. lopezlira says the lasting impact of all of
