to be done. >> it's supposed to be a solution to san francisco's drug crisis. why critics say it's quickly becoming part of the problem. also tonight, we are taking you live to beijing. three local athletes competing tonight. plus, who has the best shot at earning team usa's first gold? the news starts now. thanks for joining us. i am audrey asistio. >> and i am terry mcsweeney. we begin with tragic new information about the man killed in the latest oakland freeway shooting within the last hour, we have learned there have been an arrest. investigators are not releasing the name of the victim but nbc bay area has learned the victim is a cal basketball hall of fame inductee, holds school record for most minutes played in a game. he has coached in the past as well. mayed at cal in the late '70s. the shooting happened last night on 880 near the broadway exit. initially, thought to be just an

accident, the car swerved and crashed but chp investigators showed up and found something else. they discovered ransom had been shot. just a few moelts ago, chp provided an update. they arrested a 25-year-old san francisco man who investigators say is behind that shooting. motive remains unclear. >> this is sadly one of many deadly freeway shootings we have seen recently. three other people have died in the east bay in the last few months. and right now, there are no arrests in any of those cases. in november, 23 month old jasper wu was shot and killed while riding in the backseat of his family's car. this one, also, happened on 880 in oakland just a few weeks later, 29-year-old amani morris was killed on 80. her fiance was driving her to a job interview and her two young children were also in the car. and just last month, 28-year-old david wen was on his way home from work when he was killed on 80 near the bay bridge. our investigative unit has also been looking at the

violence on our freeways and they uncovered data that shows shootings have doubled over the past few years. in 2019, there were 82 shootings along our highways. compare that to last year when there were 178. select investigative unit arrests have actually dropped. in 2019, people were held responsible in 17% of cases. 2021, only 10% of cases resulted in arrests. you can dig deeper into these numbers, see more of our investigation on our website head to nbcbayarea.com/investigations or you can go to the investigative unit tab on our app. and this just in. new information on a story we first brought to you earlier-this week. that oakland 49ers fan attacked at sofi stadium remains in a medically induced coma and now his family is immediating with witnesses to come forward. you may recall, the fight happened during sunday's playoff game in englewood. on friday, 33-year-old brian

fuentes turned himself in after investigators -- surveillance video showed him getting into an altercation with luna in the parking hot. we are told the video shows luna appears to have started the fight. fuentes then pushed luna back, punched him in the face. luna fell and hit his head on the pavement which left him motionless. fuentes is out on bail. anyone with information is urged to contact englewood police. today, a curious sight in san francisco. protestors gathered to denounce a tenderloin center whose goal is to help get people off the streets and away from drugs but an nbc bay area's christie smith reports, critics say the center is just enabling drug addists. >> on market street, people gathered outside of san francisco's new tender honey linkage center. some concerned over what they

say is happening on site. >> there is illegal drug use going on behind that fence. not today. they cleaned it up today but behind that fence, that is being sanctioned by the city of san francisco. >> reporter: the mayor recently announced a tenderloin emergency plan, an area plagued with drug abuse and dealing. the linkage center is aimed at connecting people with services and preventing overdoses. >> i think it can do wonderful things. >> i am here because of my son, cori, who is an addict on the streets of san francisco. he is a fentanyl addict. >> jackie berlin joined other moms today. she said she was hopeful about the center at first but that quickly faded. >> i feel like allowing the drug use and sales in the linkage center is just more of the enabling and normalizing the drug use. >> reporter: the city says it does not permit drug sales on site but did not deny that drug use happens there. adding in a statement, the center is about getting people connected to immediate and

long-term services and treatment. part of being low barrier means bringing people in without asking a lot of questions. it's not a safe consumption site but they say we're in an emergency. and today, those who support the center's efforts showed up, too, and say people where they are at is important. >> i understand that issue but this is about a compassionate response that allows people to come in, be able to link service where they are at. >> the city says staff helped save five people who overdosed at the center. people who may have otherwise died on the street. last week, they had more than 2,000 visits, the majority talked with staff about substance use. behavioral health and other issues. but some see a problem being overlooked. >> shut down the open drug use inside. find a way to offer meaningful treatment. >> in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. in oakland, more protests

over plans to close and consolidate more than a dozen schools. council member led a -- dozens of families came out to voice support for keeping the schools on the chopping block open. >> keep these kids motivated. let's keep these kids here. we can't push them out. >> this is a second home to a lot of our kids, our students. so, can you imagine going home wondering if you still have somewhere to go? >> 16 campuses would be affected as the district struggles with massive budgeting and declining enrollment. school board is set to vote on closures on tuesday. but later this month, oakland city council will vote on a resolution urging governor newsom and the legislature to forgive the school district's debt and keep those schools open. it is a big day for northern california athletes at the winter games. you looking live at the olympic flame burning in front of the snagz national stadium in

norway. the country -- the most -- the winningest country, i will say, in the history of the winter olympics. >> norway grabbed the first gold of the games taking the top spot in skiathlon. jessie diggens, who won the first gold for the u.s. in 2018 came up sick. american skier nick page hit a few bumps in the road. finishing fifth in men's mogul. >> score! >> u.s. women's hockey team continues their winning streak. dominating the russian olympic committee, 5-0. >> we are definitely working well as a team but didn't really come till the third period till we were putting them away. >> in the northern mountain venues today, athletes will be competing against high wind and single-digit temps. including, american snowboarder jamie anderson, who is seeking her third consecutive slope style gold. >> the course is really gnarly. the snow is challenging, the wind is pretty gusty. um, yeah.

it is a really challenging course. >> reporter: but the weather should be milder by the time sean white hits the pipe. the 35-year-old confirming beijing will be the final stop in his olympic journey. >> you know, for me, this is all had this amazing, um, glow to every single decision, every single competition because i have decided this will be my -- my last olympics. and with that, i've been giving it my all. >> hoping to make history with a fourth gold medal. >> and legacy on the line for the california native sean white if he wins gold, will be the only american athlete in any sport to win four gold medals at the winter olympics. actually, ran into shawn on the slopes about 100 miles north of beijing. he was taking his first run, just checking out the snow. and he actually broke a heel strap on his binding, and said he hopes that is the only bad luck he gets for now. but he says he is not putting

pressure on himself. he is just here to have fun. that is the latest live in beijing. back to you guys, audrey, terry. >> that is an amazing thing. he is there to have fun because he has already been so successful. but it would be amazing to see him get another gold. so obviously, liz, we are keeping a close eye on local athletes right now. do you think team usa has a shot the at the medals in the big events coming up today? >> well, you can see local athlete jamie anderson who you just heard from in that story coming up in just a couple of hours. she will be going for a three-peat in that event. and then just a couple hours after that, ryan cochran siegel has a shot at a medal in downhill alpine skiing. one of the most difficult and, you know, most dangerous events here. but he does have a shot. you know, one of the medal favorites, though, is actually a swiss skier that is makayla shif ring's boyfriend, since they have been in beijing because of covid protocols, they haven't gotten to hang out. >> yes, of course. it's okay.

i mean, i am sure they are all focused. makayla, love her. love following her career. liz, we know you are going to be staying on top of it. thank you so much, really appreciate it. >> thank you, liz. all right. well, athletes have some interesting ways to get around this olympics. last night, our own janelle wang showed us the driverless bullet train that goes between beijing and the mountain cluster. look at it here. that's where the skiing and snowboarding events are happening. normally, the journey would take 90 minutes but on the train, it's only 23 minutes. and once you get to the mountain cluster, you have to hop on these gondolas, which take you up to the summit where the olympic venues are. by the way, janelle will be joining us live from beijing tonight at 10:30. >> all right. and here is what to watch tonight. women's short program begins at 5:30. you can watch fremont's karen chen compete there. at 7:00, it is the downhill run for men's alpine skiing. both of those, right here on primetime. the slope-style final start at

breaking news in the south bay. a small fire burning in the hills of los gatos. lot of smoke as you can see as this live camera's showing us. the fire is burning on weaver road. no evacuation warnings in effect. but, folks, it is february 5th. wow. shouldn't be happening. anyway, we will continue to monitor the situation, bring you updates both on air and online. oakland police are vowing to step up their crackdown on sideshows after another round of the illegal stunt shows tore up city streets habit night. today, several videos posted on social media, you looking at some of them here, cars careening out of control near west grand avenue and telegraph. again, this is oakland. in one video, a woman is seen getting hit by one of those cars. we reached out to opd for more information. when any arrests were made in the latest round of illegal

shows. >> podcast host joe rogan issued an apology today for past use of a racial slur. after a video surfaced showing the multitude of times rogan used the n-word on his podcast. meanwhile, spotify quietly removed episodes of rogan's show, including the ones where he used that racial slur. rogan is calling it the most regretful and shameful thing he has had to talk about publicly. >> there is nothing i can do to take that back. i wish i could. obviously, that's not possible. i do hope that, if anything, that this can be a teachable moment. >> rogan has also come under fire in recent weeks for the spread of misinformation about covid-19 and the vaccine on his podcast. music legends neil young and joni mitchell, among others, pulled their music from spotify in protest. a big announcement from the queen just hours before a major milestone. sunday marks 70 years since queen elizabeth took the british throne. couple hours ago, the queen

released a statement about her platinum jubilee. she thanked people across the globe for their love and support over many years but here we go, she also wrote that it is her wish that when her son prince charles takes the throne, that his wife, the duchess of cornwall, be known as queen consort. she also asked when the time comes, everyone show the same support for charles and camilla as she has received. if you haven't ordered your valentine's day flowers, might want to do some looking for another gift. florists -- a flower shortage nationwide and you can blame it on supply chain issues. florists say they are holding their breath as they wait for delivery trucks to arrive. while they are saying they don't know what types of flowers they are going to be getting. if your heart is set on giving flowers, though, florists say your best bet is to leave the flower choice up to them. that way, you are guaranteed a beautiful arrangement no matter what flowers do show up. you should also expect the arrangement to cost a bit more. the flower shortage is not just

hitting valentine's day. florists expect it to also affect the wedding season. >> mm. well check this out. today is the 135th anniversary of the biggest snow storm san francisco has ever seen. look at that. way back in 1887, the city got a whopping 3 inches of snow downtown. the national weather service tweeted out this photo of the snow, and apparently twin peaks saw as much as 7 inches. >> i remember the one from '74 or 5, somewhere in there. maybe we didn't get that but we got some good snow then. >> can you imagine watching winter olympics and sledding around san francisco? >> that would be fun. >> they were trying it. >> not going do this year. 61 degrees in san francisco right now. you got sunshine and we could see temperatures climbing closer to 70 degrees as we go there through the week. and notice the wind direction slightly offshore. that sign we still have some high pressure in the vicinity. 65 degrees in san jose. lots of 60s around the bay area right now. and interesting, look at

calistoga and santa rosa, upper 60s currently. warmest temperatures we are seeing in the bay area. and some north bay hills as we do have off shore breezes, the downslope warming effect we get with that north wind, we will see temperatures climbing a little more for sunday. wind speeds from about 15 to 30 miles per hour. so little breezy on those north bay hills and around the diablo range into sunday but we do not have any wind advisories or high wind warnings. heading toward to remember tomorrow morning, might see a little patchy fog toward sew ha la know county. otherwise, more sunshine today. less high clouds we saw today for tomorrow, we will get those clearing skies and as you are about to see, bit of a warmer finish to the weekend. still, some chilly-morning temperatures, though. at least this still feels and looks more like winter. low 40s in san jose. and mid-40s from san francisco to oakland by lunchtime, you got numbers in the 60s for most the south bay. heading into santa cruz,

mid-60s. 62 half moon bay and mid-afternoon, you got numbers in the upper 60s tomorrow. san jose and morgan hill and i think the numbers up toward sonoma and calistoga and santa rosa, upper 60s. i think we are going to get some low 70s tomorrow and some north bay valleys courtesy of the north wind around hill tops. so notice, high pressure still keeping all the storms away. and it is likely going to strengthen wednesday through friday. so, notice the ten-day outlook right now still looks dismal for any rain chances. we hope after the 15th, we will begin to see better chances for rain and snow making a comeback. but we might break record highs later this week as some of these temperatures verify. san francisco, upper 60s to near 70 degrees thursday. valley temperatures soaring into the mid-70s from mid week into next weekend. how about oakland? we could see about four days of 70-degree temperatures from wednesday into next saturday and morgan hill probably one of thor warmer spots we will see, could be close to 80 degrees thursday through saturday. that does not look like a

somehow get through this. 49ers almost in the bowl for some of the team stars, they got to settle for the pro bowl. anthony flores is here now. >> guys, our first chance to talk since last week's nfc championship game. i just have to say kyle shanahan touched on this. the fans that were there, it was incredible. you never would have known it was a road game. so much red at that stadium. really loud, obviously, they left disappointed but still a get season. a few of the 49ers are gearing up to take the field. it is not the game everyone in the bay area was hoping for. it is the pro bowl. deebo samuel, george kittle, full back kyle juszczyk, center alex mack are representing the 9ers this week at the pro bowl in las vegas. they are playing for the nfc. the 9ers, well we have to revisit this. had a three-point lead over the rams with ten minutes to go in the championship before losing by a field goal as i mentioned this is not the super bowl but the pro bowl recognizes players for great individual seasons, like the one deebo had as a wide receiver and a running back.
