>> a lot of places to go. we want to get you started this morning at 6:00, one peninsula school district getting ready to dial back its mask requirements. students will no longer need to wear protection outdoors. >> "today in the bay's" cierra johnson reports from burlingame this morning, the districtha re another milestone in the pandemic. masks have been so critical throughout the course of the pandemic, but starting next monday, one district will be allowing students to not have to wear their masks outdoors. now, this announcement by the burlingame school district does note that masks are still required indoors and the district will continue to keep a close eye on students as they make this change for outdoors february 14th, next monday. now, we took a closer look at the outdoor mask policy for some of the other bay area districts and found a few others, including san francisco unified, east side unified, as well as san ramon valley unified, also allowed masks to be removed

outdoors. how are local experts reacting to another district allowing their students to go maskless outdoors? we spoke with ucsf physician dr. peter chin-hong for insight. he says this move should come with reducing the number of people outdoors as well. >> that would probably be in between, and then you follow it for a while. if it looks okay, people are honoring it, you can be going toward the normal setting of general, everybody outdoors at the same time. >> reporter: where does this district currently stand in regards to covid cases? in the last week of january, only 20 out of nearly 700 students in the district tested positive for covid. the week before that, the district had 31 positive cases. so, again, the loosening of these mask restrictions just for outdoors will take place next monday, february 14th. the statewide mask mandate is expected to be lifted for all businesses and restaurants the following day, tuesday, february

15th. so a lot happening in terms of those mask mandates next week. in burlingame, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:02 this morning, and day three of the 2022 winter olympics now in the books. and, much buzz this morning over what may happen today, especially about what happened last night. one bay area olympian suddenly staring at the possibility of being sidelined. another crashed in her event and had to be taken off on a stretcher. >> yeah, the crash actually shut down competition for ten minutes. a lot of activity. "today in the ng do we know, janelle? >> yeah, we are getting updates by the hour, but a lot happening today, laura and marcus. we're at the main media center and behind me are journalists from all over the world filing

reports right now and getting updates. and we have an update in the last couple of hours. alpine skier nina o'brien from san francisco, we hear that she is alert and responsive. the first thing she said is she was worried about holding up the competition and she also wanted to know how fast she was skiing. let's take you to the slopes and show you this video. nina was doing better than expected in sixth place after her first run. during her second run it appears she lost control right after the last gate and tumbled across the finish line. fellow teammate, mikaela shiffrin, who was disqualified from the event, gasping in horror. paramedics rushing to nina. competition stopped for ten minutes. hopefully she's okay. she's alert and responsive. we're still waiting to hear on the extent of her injuries. in women's hockey, team usa stomped switzerland 8-0, setting up tonight's match against bitter rival team canada. a preview of what is expected to

be the gold medal match between the two countries. >> we know what they're about and we've played each other a bunch. but we're having fun and doing what we need to do and it will be a fun game. >> so the team usa versus canada tonight, 9:30 in prime time. it's a rematch of the last three olympic finals, usa took gold in pyeongchang. an exciting day of competition. as you mentioned, vincent zhou of palo alto is on the men's figure skating team. he tested positive for covid a couple of days ago. we are hoping it's a false positive. he's supposed to compete in about 12 hours from now. so they're going to do more testing. if he is negative and those tests are confirmed, he will get the green light to compete. so fingers crossed for vincent zhou of palo alto because the men's figure skating individual competition begins later today. now, we've had a full day here. it's just after 10:00 p.m. and i

want to show you something in the main media center. they have sleep pods, they're called. they're free for media to use. and you can go in there to take a nap, you can work in there. there's wi-fi. we're down on the basement level. now, the only problem is, laura and marcus, it has a glass front. so we have seen people sleeping in there. and for me, i mean, you must be really tired if you can sleep with everybody kind of peering in. but i guess if you're that tired, you've been working all day, you might want to take a little break in the sleep pod right here. >> if you work our morning shift, you can literally fall asleep anywhere. >> this is true. i think you're working those type of hours now, janelle. >> you turn off the lights. >> we're on a 15-hour day so we could take a quick break. every time we go in it, they have to sanitize it, so i don't want to mess up the sheets.

>> rest well. even if it's standing up. we'll see you in a bit. if you're keeping track of the medals being awarded, we need to warn you we're going to show you the medal count. >> you can see it right here. russia's olympic committee currently in first place with seven medals, canada in second place with six, the netherlands round out the top three with five. now, team usa, of course, off to a slow start with three silver medals. one of those wins courtesy of freemont's happening today, a preliminary hearing for scott peterson, bidding for a new trial in his murder conviction. attorneys will debate evidence ahead of the hearing, which may happen as soon as this month. last year the judge resentenced peterson in life in prison for the murder of his wife and their unborn son. his defense team has argued he deserves a new trial due to juror misconduct in the criminal

trial two decades ago. loved ones, friends and neighbors raising awareness about the missing oakley woman. yesterday they walked together wearing shirts, showing 23-year-old alexis gabe. she's been missing for nearly two weeks. they also held a vigil. police are still not revealing much about the investigation. last week investigators did search the home of gabe's ex-boyfriend, and removed several bags of evidence. he's believed to be the last person to have seen her. santa clara county supervisor will update efforts to boost housing to help those struggling to make it in the south bay. she and other leaders plan to provide progress reports on half a dozen affordable housing projects now in the pipeline. she's also seeking to expand both the motel program for homeless families and the county's new tiny homes program. 6:08, let's take a live look downtown san jose this morning as we get started with your day. meteorologist kari hall tracking temperatures for us. kari, starting out this morning

nice and cold. >> yes, and it's clear in the south bay. you can start to see the sun rising a little bit. we are going to start out our morning with temperatures in the 30s in some spots, and even though we are seeing spots like walnut creek clear visibility there, as you drive around you may encounter fog. we've seen fog moving into oakland, a quarter mile visibility there, more of the same in novato and parts of the north bay. we are going to start out foggy in petaluma as well. then take a look at the trend and how fast it warms up today. layer up for the cold morning, but then you'll be taking off the layers later on today as we head for the upper 60s and low 70s. a nice, mild day ahead. we'll talk about the warm-up in the forecast. and you were tracking a crash and slowing in hayward. >> yeah, it was a big concern because the initial report showed you on the maps, south 880 at the critical point around

industrial parkway, a crash blocked three of your five lanes there. it took just a few minutes until they were able to move to the right shoulder, so that means probably no major injuries. we do see slowing through hayward, clear by union city. the other issue coming out of newark and freemont, no problem off the dumbarton bridge, same thing where the flat tire was being repaired. looking toward the east bay with typical builds in areas of highway 4, 37, and as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza. i will call out the metering lights have been activated, a little more volume. no backup visible here closer to the metering light. back to you. >> thank you, mike. locked out of access to hard-earned money. coming up at 6:25, our consumer team helps one gig worker regain control of his account. >> spotify apologizing again, and, yes, it does have something to do with joe rogan. let's take you to the futures.

bay we have temperatures dipping into the mid-30s right now. pleasant hill, you're heading out the door to 35 degrees. you'll need to layer up because we're starting out cold, but take a look at the warm-up we'll see by late morning into the afternoon, as we head for the upper 60s for today. we'll get a look at how warm it gets in our forecast and if there's any change in the weather pattern coming up in a few minutes. >> this is 92, a little glow from the lights, low clouds. visibility is fine across the san mateo bridge. getting here is a problem right now. 880 jammed up through hayward. the earlier crash did clear at industrial parkway. we'll show you progress with speed sensors and bigger drives coming up. >> reporter: good morning, very happy monday to you. just announced, frontier airlines and spirit airlines are merging in a $6.8 billion deal. spotify once again apologizing,

this time to its own employees, after it was revealed podcaster joe rogan repeatedly used racist language on some podcasts and other appearances. spotify is an exclusive distribution deal with rogan. rogan has in the past apologized after complaints he was disseminating false information about vaccines and covid. in a statement to employees, spotify's ceo first apologized, there are no words i can say to adequately convey how deeply sorry i am for the way the joe rogan experience controversy continues to impact each of you. but went on to say the service will stand by the podcaster. i realize some want more and i want to make one point very clear, i do not believe that silencing joe is the answer. now, the spotify ceo says the company will spend $100 million to develop content from marginalized groups, reported by the same they paid rogan.

some rogan supporters say rogan represents an alternative to corporate media. but as jared holt points out, joe rogan is a threat to corporate media is hands down the most laughable take on this whole debacle. we all know he signed to spotify for $100 million, right? wall street is still trying to figure out what to do after the blockbuster good employment report friday. not only was the january jobs number bigger than expected, way bigger, december and november reports were revised upwards as well. such good news on the economy has some investors convinced that the fed will move much more quickly in a series of rate hikes, which are expected to start next month. you're going to hear a lot more about the metaverse over the next few months as more and more companies promise to invest in something that nobody has been able to adequately explain. i did talk to one investor who

popular as football and basketball now. >> it is popular, but i'm also like, go outside! >> mom, i'm trying to work on this scholarship. >> that's what i'm afraid of, that debate. thanks, scott. 6:18. apple reportedly targeting march 8th to show off its latest devices. according to bloomberg, that includes a lower cost iphone se and a refreshed ipad air. now, both with 5g technology. the iphone se is expected to have a faster chip and improved cameras. the current se was launched in 2020, the price tag $399 has remained the same. can you believe that? >> not bad. >> okay, all right. well, this is trending this morning, tequila could soon surpass vodka as america's liquor. >> the distilled spirits council says tequila and mescal were the fastest growing last year.

tequila was the second largest category by sales behind vodka, which has been the top-selling spirit since the 1970s. the company that owns john julio is forecasting that it will grow faster for the next five to ten years. >> i thought it was a california thing here. the don julio, they love that. >> they? >> well, i'm not a big -- >> my people? >> no, my people, too. no, just a lot of people that i've hung around, they really like tequila. i'm not a big tequila guy. you know what i like. >> that's true. i make sure and have his bottle at the house. >> it is there for me. >> although, we haven't been able to get together, like we

normally do. >> this week is going to shape up to be nice outside. >> that's right, we could have margaritas. and people in their individual homes, they're buying more liquor instead of one person buying it for a party. i wonder if that goes for the sales as well. let's get a look at what's going on. we're waking up and heading out the door to low visibility, especially in the north bay, where the fog is moving around and it's less than a quarter of a mile. so allow extra time to get to work. once that clears out, we have sunshine and our temperatures will be heading up. you do want to make plans to enjoy the warmer weather and maybe go for a hike in the south bay. our temperatures will be at about 65 at 1:00, the warmest time of the day will be 3:00, where it's going to be so comfortable you won't need a jacket. take a look at our numbers. all around the bay area today, warmer than normal highs, reaching up to about 67 in hayward, and we're also looking

at temperatures in the low 70s for parts of the north bay. we've been looking at how dry it's been, and we do normally see a stretch of some dry weather during the middle of our rainy season. right now we've made it to 31 days without even a drop of rain. and what's normal is about 20 days of not seeing any rain. so it does extend a lot longer than we expected to see. and even after that big boost of rainfall that we had, we're starting to see san jose slipping into a rainfall deficit. but we're still at a surplus for rainfall for the water year for much of the rest of the bay area. the surplus is shrinking every day that this high pressure remains in place and keeps the rain away from us. and there will be a slight change in the pattern toward the middle of the month, but it still doesn't look like it brings us a significant amount of rainfall. we're seeing temperatures head up and by thursday, the warmest day of the week, we could be setting record-high

temperatures. take a look at santa rosa, we may be throwing old records out of the water. our forecast for gilroy goes from the lower to the upper 70s. you know in the beginning of february we should not be near 80 degrees. that's what we're talking about as we head toward the end of the week, as well as the winds picking up. so we're we go with dry weather and now warmer conditions by the end of the week. we'll be watching that. mike, you've been watching the fog and its impact on the commute across the bay area. >> yeah, and so far it's the warning for the north bay, novato and santa rosa. the bay bridge had some fog earlier. the live picture shows you the fog and low clouds clear from this shot. as we look at the map, there's slowing across the bay bridge and highway 37 and 4, kind of holding steady. there's fog in novato in the yellow section. recovery, south 880 still slows down toward industrial parkway.

san francisco doordash driver after a good chunk of money vanished from his account. >> so he asked consumer investigator chris chmura and his team for some help. >> rodney wrote us when he got locked out of account. he said doordash initially helped him log back in, but then he found some of his info had changed and $900 had gone missing. money he had earned during deliveries. rodney said doordash didn't help out, so he pinged us. we pinged the company's headquarters in san francisco. within a week, rodney got his $900 back. he wrote us a nice note saying, i cannot thank you enough. doordash indicated someone got into rodney's account just as he had suspected. it's not clear exactly how that happened. criminal hackers breached doordash in 2019, compromised 4.9 million accounts. since then, doordash says it's added extra security. it asked us to remind drivers to

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. don't forget, if you're on the go, we're broadcasting not only on television, but you can catch us live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. >> let's take a live look in beijing where the olympic flame is certainly burning bright. day three events have just wrapped up. stick around. janelle wang will have a live report for us. >> first we want to get a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall tracking a morning that is starting out nice and cold. >> yeah, so we have cold mornings and warm afternoons. right now we are seeing temperatures continuing to dip and we're in the mid-30s right now in morgan hill. it is 36 in dublin and in concord, and 38 right now in napa. we've also seen some fog in the north bay, but it's clear in martinez, where our temperature right now, 37 degrees. you'll need to layer up for the cold morning, but then peel off those layers as our temperature trend goes up.

we'll be in the low 60s by 1:00 and we're headed for the upper 60s for today. we'll talk about a warm-up, our dry weather and if there's any change farther down the line that could bring us some rain. that's coming up in the microclimate forecast. marcus and laura? >> sounds good. 6:32, we've got new details on a south bay fire that turned deadly overnight. it happened not far from san jose city college. sharon katsuda joins us live to explain the difficult conditions firefighters faced when they arrived on scene. >> reporter: that's right, laura. neighbors said that the person living there had a lot of clutter inside the home. firefighters said they had to be careful when they arrived on scene and they had to get, quote, each bit of debris while they were fighting the blaze. the fire broke out about 9:00 last night at a home near san jose city college. one person died in the house fire. a neighbor recalls what the

house looked like before the fighter. >> he was quite a collector. he collected war memorabilia. yeah, i don't know what not. i know the wife supposedly is on her way back here now. yeah, it's terrible. i've been in this neighborhood since 1961 and i've never seen anything like this before. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the fire captain says this is a reminder to make sure your smoke detectors are working and get out of the house if you see or smell smoke and call 911 immediately. reporting live in san jose, i'm sharon katsuda. back to you. >> sad that a life was lost. thank you. starting today, berkeley health leaders will require certain workers to stay up to date with boosters. workers at restaurants, theatres and gyms will have to show proof of vaccination and certain places will require full vaccination for those entering the business. i spoke one-on-one with the

city's mayor about the new policy. >> on september the city of berkeley implemented a proof of vaccination requirement for patrons to enter the indoor part of certain businesses, restaurants, bars, movie theatres, like performance venues, gyms. so this builds on that previous vaccination requirement to require that children ages 5 years and older would also have to show -- their parents would have to show proof of vaccination in order for them to enter the indoor parts of certain businesses, places serving drinks, you know, other types of businesses. and then the other part of our order is requiring that employees of certain businesses have to be boosted. we're doing this out of concern over the spread of covid-19. while we are seeing cases drop a little bit, we are seeing our hospitals filling up, we are seeing people that aren't vaccinated at all ending up in

the icu. in order for all of us to get through this surge, we all need to do our part. >> talk to me about what we're seeing as we see those numbers of the omicron variant, the cases, anyway, go down, what is it looking like in berkeley itself? >> well, end of december, beginning of january, we saw some of the highest number of cases than we have ever seen throughout this pandemic. and even more than the winter surge of 2021. and i think that's because omicron is so contagious and having such a highly vaccinated population, a lot of people are asymptomatic, so they may not exhibit any symptoms but may be carrying covid-19. that's why masking requirements are important and we have not yet lifted or loosened our masking requirements. i know san francisco has done that. we think at the masking is important to help

control this surge, as well as requiring, through things like our boostersee, it's really cril to protecting our employees, protecting our residents. >> i want to ask you about the businesses, because i would imagine, you know, a lot of businesses have been struggling during the pandemic, and of course we know that vaccinations do help, they do help keep the virus numbers low. what are the business owners saying about that? because this could ultimately hurt business, especially small businesses. >> well, when we rolled out the first vaccination requirement in september, there was concern, how am i going to implement this, what do i do if i have a patron that doesn't want to comply, is the city going to help enforce. and, you know, over the past six months since we implemented our initial vaccination requirement, it's worked well and we have not heard significant concerns from

and we're also seeing the fog and it's really been thick across parts of the north bay, now moving into oakland. in novato right now, visibility is at zero, so allow some extra time to get to work. in the tri-valley we have a nice, easy drive. yes, it's very chilly and our temperatures are in the mid-30s. we're headed for the mid-60s by early in the afternoon. and some spots will reach near 70 degrees. it's going to be a significant warm-up and that continues in the forecast. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at a new incident on the bay bridge. >> yeah, at least the impacts of that as we look at the bay bridge camera. the backup has really filled in the last 15 minutes, filled in all lanes at the toll plaza. a clear view here. the fog is not the problem. it's a disabled vehicle on this span there. as we look at the map, we're seeing slowing across the bottom of the screen, highway 37, as well as highway 4. in the north bay we have the real mccoy ferry. a reminder for folks, it's out

and weapons landing in poland, also a nato ally. we've already got american soldiers stationed there. this is brand new video into our newsroom. europeans are sending more emissaries. french president macron will head to kyiv and moscow to talk to both sides, in hopes of slowing things down. the french have also sent weapons to ukraine and moved french troops into romania to help protect nato's eastern flank. macron is an interesting guy. he was very quick to see there was room for a powerful european leader in nato after then-president trump talked about leaving nato. macron quickly started getting more involved in representing the western alliance and called for a separate european alliance. the most powerful european nato is germany, but germany appears to be taking a less forceful std. some of that is historical reasons, but germany also depends on russia for energy. brand new german chancellor

schulz will meet with president biden in washington later today. first lady jill biden just finished speaking to teachers and educators at the national legislation summit where she announced a main effort to push for two years of free community college for all american children was dead and probably would not be part of any build back better plan. and the "washington post" reports representatives from the national archives recovered presidential records taken by the trump team to mar-a-lago, including letters between the former president and north korean dictator kim jong-un. earlier this weekend, the post reported the trump team ordered some records shredded and burned. that's against the law. while we're watching what's happening in washington, ukraine and moscow and talking about it on social media on twitter, you'll find me @scott mcgrew. the tiny town of woodside

rethinking its strategy when it comes to making it in the bay. leaders raised a ton of questions last week when they were suggesting to facility affordable housing construction in the name of saving mountain lions. that's when the attorney general stepped in. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us this morning. talk about this. what does it mean for more of woodside going forward? >> reporter: good morning, marcus. it means starting today woodside will once again begin to accept those sb-9 applications that allow property owners to develop duplexes on their single-family lots. you might recall that back in december the town of woodside declared that it was exempt from sb-9, the new state law that allows single-family lots to be split into several units. and the town's argument was we're a sanctuary for mountain lions, which are classified by the state as a specially protected species. the town argued they could halt the development of duplexes in the name of protecting mountain lions. critics saw this as a employ by

the wealthy town to keep out low income housing. yesterday state attorney general sent woodside leaders a memo telling them they got it wrong. >> the proposal they have put forward violates the clear language of sb-9. there's no basis in fact for it. it's a very bold and remarkable claim that the entire town is somehow a mountain lion habitat. they've put forward no evidence for that. >> reporter: hours after yesterday's memo from the attorney general, the town held a meeting and, again, decided to reverse its policy. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. let's take a live look at sofi stadium where tonight things start to get a little more real when it comes to super bowl sunday. tonight is media night. the one team will still be far away. the bengals will be doing it remotely from their home stadium in cincinnati. if you think you know football better than anyone else, you may

guac. kari has a look at our forecast. we're starting a new workweek. >> yes, we are. and getting ready for the super bowl, i think i might sign up my husband for that because he knows so much about football. i mean, i think he would probably win that. i don't know. we're getting ready for the big game this weekend and we're just trying to make it to work this morning and dealing with this dense fog. take a look at the visibility. really dropping in the north bay. it's low visibility in oakland, as well as down the peninsula. mike was showing the camera in palo alto and you could see the three-quarter of a mile visibility in san carlos. it's clear in the south bay. as the seven-day forecast comes up, take a look at the warm-up headed our way. it's chilly now, but we're really thinking about this afternoon when we go from the upper 30s to the upper 60s and low 70s. so our morning starts out chilly, but then take a look at the high. 70 degrees in san jose. we're going to see some upper 60s for the tri-valley,

livermore reaching 68. 68 in concord. and we're seeing temperatures headed for the low 70s in sonoma and santa rosa. so here we are on day 31 without a drop of rain. it's been a whole calendar month and usually we do see a stretch of dry weather during the middle of our rainy season. but on average it lasts about 20 days. so now, once again, it's a lot longer than we like to see. but then because we had such a big amount of rain at the first part of the water year, we're still at a surplus. take a look at spots like santa rosa, measured over 22 inches of rain. we're still at a surplus of 2 inches. you can see how much rainfall we've measured and how much over the normal amount it is for this date. san jose starting to slip into a rainfall deficit and it's approaching an inch at this point. each day we're seeing the surplus shrink as dry weather continues, and this is expected to stay with us through at least

the middle of february. a slight change in the weather pattern, but still it doesn't bring us any rain in the bay area. and then as we go through this up and we may be setting records by the end of the week on thursday for santa rosa, concord, as well as san jose. you can see the numbers there. we know for early february it's not supposed to be this warm, and take a look at santa rosa over the next ten days. we'll see our temperatures near 80 degrees before the end of the week, and just a slight cooldown going into next week. so we can see our temperature trend for the inland areas with some low 70s. headed for the upper 70s and the weekend is still looking nice, but very dry. you can plan your day to have all the fans at your house and set up for the game outside, because it will be very comfortable. and, mike, you're saying the bay bridge is still a pretty tough drive. >> yeah, a tough drive. typically it's congested, but as we look at the live camera, it's worse now because of a disabled
