good morning to you, wednesday. thanks so much for being part of our morning and allowing us into your home. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we broadcast not only to your television, but you can watch us live on roku, amazon and online at nbcbayarea.com. >> meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect in the forecast today. >> you guys are talking about breaking news and i'm talking about breaking records here, because it's going to be very warm over the next few days and we're starting out with some mild weather with this clear look at the golden gate bridge as you get ready to head out this morning. and temperatures are already starting out warmer than what we've seen recently. it's in the mid-50s in oakland and san francisco. low 40s for dublin and mid-40s for the south bay. only a little bit of some patchy fog around santa rosa. elsewhere it is clear. and then as our temperatures

warm up, we're headed for the mid to upper 70s by this afternoon. we'll talk about what's ahead as temperatures continue to warm in a few minutes. how is it looking for commuters just about to head out the door? >> we have some closures to talk about. overnight closures. b.a.r.t. was closed, service stopped at 11:20 last night. police activity, a major medical emergency reported. should have service restarted without delay this morning. second, out of alameda to oakland, it should be open in a few minutes. the rest of the contra costa county and alameda county moving smoothly except for highway 84, overnight construction there. back to you. >> thank you very much. more breaking news we're following, the oakland school district approving a plan to close or merge 11 schools across the district over the next two years. the vote happened just before 1:00 this morning, after nearly

eight hours of public comment from families and staff. the board also decided it will close parker elementary school and community day school this year. the district plans to close five more schools next year. all five are elementary schools. the board also voted to merge rise community elementary with new highland academy and cut 6th through 8th great from hillcrest elementary schools. >> we've got kindergartners on here saying how much they love school and for y'all to close them down, especially right now during the midst of a pandemic, you've got people out of work. >> it's one big community and it will hurt a lot to take it apart. >> the district says the decision is based on declining enrollment and budget cuts. protests are planned today to oppose the vote. this morning we're moving you forward during a pivotal time of the pandemic in california. the california mask mandate will

expire in six days. however, it's up to the counties to lift their own mandates. the santa clara county is expected to give an update at 8:30 this morning. meantime, san mateo county is the latest to align with the state, saying that masks can come off for people vaccinated indoors starting on the 16th. that's next wednesday. solano and marin counties are following the state, allowing masks to come off next tuesday. for those who are not vaccinated, you'll still need to wear masks. masks will still be required at schools, hospitals and nursing homes, as well as on public transit. >> i think the timing is appropriate. i think that we've seen a 70% decline since the peak of the omicron wave on january 14th. i think we're reasonably comfortable with omicron as a less severe, more transmissible virus, but, you know, the next variant we see may be something completely different. >> take a look at your screen

and hurt american families. >> yet another example of government overreach. >> reporter: moderate democrats like joe manchin have put the brakes on parts of the president's agenda, calling build back better dead. administration officials tell me they're pressing ahead anyway. >> what we're worried about is how this will lower costs for families. we're going to lower the cost of prescription drugs, we're going to lower the cost of goods and services. >> reporter: meanwhile, concerns about a russian invasion continue. the french president expressing optimism, after meeting with russian president vladimir putin monday to help de-escalate the crisis, and ukraine's president tuesday. however, the kremlin says no deals were made. republicans want immediate sanctions or to target russia's gas pipeline now. >> the president has all the authority he needs. he needs to decide the timing. i think it's going to be a serious deterrent if it's executed before the invasion,

rain forecast coming up. >> fingers crossed for the rain. right now we're not seeing that on the roadways, obviously. good conditions for the drive. the north bay, san raphael light traffic right now. the headlights down to the golden gate bridge. we'll talk about why you will have potentially delays there now and perhaps later on today, but first let's check in with bertha. >> hey, mike, thank you so much for that. good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher after the market rallied yesterday, the dow rising on the back of strong earnings. other names such as harley davidson and dupont reporting better than expected results, lifting the s&p 500 and nasdaq. nearly 60% of companies in the s&p have reported fourth quarter numbers. three-quarters of them have

beaten earnings forecasts. in focus today, we just got better than expected results from cvs health, and yum brands. we're awaiting disney, mattel and uber. meantime, apple is expanding benefits for retail employees starting in april. bloomberg report these include more vacation and sick days and paid parental leave. it covers both full and part-time workers at apple stores nationwide. the expansion of benefits comes after a number of media outlets reported on low pay, stressful workloads and low morale at apple stores. dozens of employees staged a walkout on christmas eve to protest working conditions. meantime, chipotle says you may be shelling out a bit more question. the company says food and labor costs remain high and it may raise prices once more. those increases help the burrito chain boost profits and did not

good morning. as you're waking up and heading out, we are going to see a lot of clear skies across the bay area, but we've also been talking about how warm it's going to be. we could see near record high temperatures for this afternoon. take a look at santa rosa. the forecast is 79 degrees, the record is 82. so we're going to be very close. i think concord will most likely be very close as well. san francisco reaching 74. the record is 76. when you're thinking, okay, what's normal? low 60s for this time of year. we're well beyond that. and then looking at the forecast for oakland, we may set a record there, and san jose will be maybe 5 degrees below a record high temperature. i do think we'll set a lot more records tomorrow as we reach the peak of this heat, and santa rosa may reach over that record high as well as concord and san jose for tomorrow afternoon. and then as we deal with some

warmth, it's even hotter in southern california. take a look at the heat advisories they have in effect, because temperatures will be headed for the mid-80s and low 90s over the next few days. this starts at 11:00 today and continues through 6:00 p.m. sunday. what's happening on sunday? i don't know, something small is happening in l.a. this weekend. and so we're going to see the temperatures at noon on sunday for the super bowl at about 85 degrees, and then we'll see it reaching into the mid-80s at the kickoff of the super bowl. so i know it's inside, but it's going to be really hot as they're heading in, and those temperatures in the low 80s, and then cooling down into the low 70s by 7:00. back here at home, we're dealing with extremely dry conditions, and then as we run the models out about ten days, it shows only very light spotty rain, a lot of it staying to the north of us. but the models can't agree on that, so a look at another computer model doesn't show

anything for us from now through at least the 18th of february. so our seven-day forecast is all dry here as we deal with near record high temperatures, reaching into the upper 70s. it will cool off slightly by the end of the weekend into early next week, but still with the transition it's just going to be windy and we're keeping the forecast dry. looking at san francisco, some low 70s over the next few days and then next week we're back to the 60s, which is a little more normal for this time of year. mike, what's happening now as people head out from the tri-valley? >> even now folks are driving perhaps through niles canyon. let's take a look at the map. it's 83, the windy portion. the construction seems to have cleared, and from the caltrans report the sensors should light up shortly. we still have a crew on the western side coming out of livermore. that's the only really slowing

for the bay. a little build out of the altamont pass. tonight the webster tube closes overnight for traditional maintenance. no delays for longer routes throughout contra costa county and vasco road is at the limit. a smooth flow of traffic and construction on the northern side that should be clearing shortly. between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. they're going to be running striping crews like they did yesterday. prepare for delays. >> thanks, mike. new data know showing how difficult it is to make it in the bay. this new report by the national association of realtors shows that if you earn between $100,000 and $125,000 there's just one home in the south bay for every 1,200 buy nurse that price range. the san jose, there were less than 300 homes for sale. now buyers and real estate agents are really scrambling. >> there is this misconception that we have these people

leaving california in droves, but the fact is that the jobs are still in california. we have a huge buyer base in the bay area especially. >> where are the homes? so real stores say if you're in the market, you're going to need a lot of patience and a lot of money to make your bid stand out. >> i was going to say, they're out there, very expensive. if you watch "today in the bay" regularly you may be keeping tabs on silicon valley's newest flying machine. it doubles as a car. you may soon be able to buy and it park it in your driveway to fly whenever the need arises. our business and tech reporter recently got an up-close look. >> reporter: they promised us flying cars. >> are you ready to take off? >> yes. >> reporter: but in a quiet bay area studio, i found myself learning to fly -- >> this would be about 150 miles an hour. >> reporter: -- in a car.
