savannah, back to you. >> mikaela is a class act. >> lindsey vonn, we didn't think we'd be having this conversation what do you make of it what did you think when that happened >> it is so shocking because she's so consistent. that's really been one of the the cornerstones of her athletic career is how consistent she's been and i don't think anyone saw it coming but i think one thing to keep in mind is that ski racing is, everything happens so fast. you know, there is no room for error. and i think she was trying to articulate in the finish area comparing to it tennis tennis and other sports you have time to make mistakes and come back and ski racing, it can be over in a few seconds so that is normal part of ski racing unfortunately it is not normal for her. so just she really needs to find a way to put that behind her and move forward and she has three more chances to win medals. >> she was talking about how it made her rethink her 15 years in the sport. i thought that was such a profound statement
7:16 am
this wasn't about a whoops she seems to be reflecting on her entire career in this moment. >> i think what she was trying to articulate there is she's -- she's always been confident in her skiing she's always had a game plan and executed it and its always worked out in her favor. and so you know she had that same game plan felt she was pushing the limits and executing and it didn't work out. and so because she's been so consistent he's not used to not finishing with that game plan. so she just has to readjust, compose herself, take a couple days to really figure out what she wants to do. take a deep breath and this is all part of athletics, part of the olympics. and i have no doubt is that she's going to regroup and come back. >> it is so hard because what she's stalking about is loss of confidence everything i said i thought i knew about what i own skiing but also what she said knew about how to reset like obviously my reset didn't work and you have to feel for her do you think there is a chance she says i'm done with the olympics
7:17 am
she kind of hinted okay there are other skiers just as fast. she seems torn in that moment. >> definitely there is a lot of emotions and she's obviously really upset as she should be. you know if i were her i wouldn't make any rash decisions i think she needs to take a minute and think about it and take a deep breath and be around her mother, her boyfriends and teammates and just feel the support of everyone. and take the perspective try and regroup and look forward to the next races i honestly have no idea what her decision will be if she will continue to race or not. but she has the ability to win in the remaining three events so i really hope to see her i'm always cheering for her. and again this is really heartbreaking to see she's so talented. has had such a storied career and this does not define her career in my way >> and i was just thinking about that because obviously there is a parallel with what happened

>> and that's your latest weather. guys >> let's focus more on tonight's glamour event at the winter olympics all eyes on 22 year old figure skater nathan chen going for gold after his record breaking performance in the short program. >> last american man to grab cold evan lysacek and at the top of the 2010 vancouver games. he's with us now good to see you. >> good morning. thanks for having me on. >> we're just still reeling from nathan chen's flawless t short program. tonight is the free skate. how do you think he's going into this what are the two days in interim like for an athlete? you have been there. >> yeah. such a good question, savannah i think the goal for a lot of these athletes is just to try to have as normal a day as they possibly can, which is easier
8:23 am
said than done there is a lot of energy after delivering an exceptional short program like nathan did. but as best as he can, i would guess, that he's just trying to keep his emotions in check, recover from that short, and keep as much energy as he possibly can going into the free skate and just build on the momentum that he has so far, which is tremendous. >> evan what's interesting about this free skate which was pointed out is he will skate last so he will watch all of the other skaters compete. so what is he going to do with that gap of time he has? and how do you think that plays? >> hoda, that's such a good question every skater is different. some athletes actually like to watch and know exactly what they have to do when they get out on the ice. others, myself, try to avoid watching, knowing the results, knowing what happened because it sort of clouds your judgment and then it leaves you with the
8:24 am
temptation of maybe wanting to make some last minute changes, which doesn't often turn out very well. so, you know, for nathan, i can't really speculate wha his plan is. but i would take a guess it is going to be putting the headset on and sort of keeping out of sight and keeping his eye on the prize and remembering his trainings, what his job is, and what he's going to do when he gets out there. >> evan, it is carson. i hope i asked a good questions like my colleagues just did. >> let's have it. >> from a technical standpoint tonight when we're watching. back in 2010 you won without a quad some people had some things to say about that what are we going to see on the ice tonight? what is it going to take how has it changed >> yeah. well, you know, 12 years ago was a different competition. i certainly had a strategy that i felt was a winning one and it wasn't by any means certain. but i did the best that i could and came out with a good result
8:25 am
in the end tonight i think we're going to see a couple things. i think number one, nathan is certainly prepared he, like i said, has great momentum going in. its been rare in the four years since the last olympic games that when he had a good short program he didn't continue with an even better free skate. so not to jinx it, but i have faith that it is going to be a good night for him and then i hate to even say it i mean, i hate saying this but if nathan were to make at skaters that are very worthy components as we mistake, there are some great skaters that are very worthy components as well shoma uno from japan and kagiyama also from japan are within striking distance one of the most interesting things to me is what will yuzuru hanyu do a two-time olympic champion coming in and right now he's in the middle of the pack going
8:26 am
into the free skate. i think he's gunning for a medal for sure i think he's a skater that sort of thrives on the spotlight. and i think he's going to go for a headline here with possibly . good morning. it is 8:26. i'm marcus washington. police in antioch are investigating the death of a 76-year-old woman killed during a drive-by shooting. this happened last night near canada valley road. the woman was a passenger in a car targeted by the gunman in a second car. the driver and the targeted car was not injured. according to police and witnesses the gunman fired multiple rounds and then taking off. police are not indicating if they have any leads. let's look at the forecast for you on this wednesday morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at that.
