nathan chen first got on skates at the age of 3 after the 2002 olympics were held in his hometown, salt lake city. started skating on a practice rink. and all of that came in the form of a gold medal. very excited to be joined now by the gold medalist, nathan chen. >> thank you very much for having me. >> 24 hours, what's it been like. with that new hardware around your neck? >> been unreal. i still can't believe it. been about 24 hours now. craziness. >> when you look at that 3-year-old nathan chen in the practice rink, that was the winter games in salt lake city. when you look back at it, what do you see? >> a lot of things. all of the people that have supported me throughout my career. looking back on that, knowing

that, you know, i grew up out of an olympic town in salt lake city from the 2002 olympics. >> you said something interesting. you said your strategy going into these games was to not think about beijing. it's clearly a strategy that paid off for you. how were you able to do that, to focus on the games without really overthinking it? >> i think trying to focus on things i can control especially being on the ice. you're alone on the ice. no one throwing jabs at you that you have to engage with. all in your mind how can you set up the programs that you can be the best at and do. and for me being able to recognize that this experience is something i am so fortunate and lucky to have. take that for what it is and try to enjoy it. >> i was able to watch you nail that program and win the gold and i noticed when you finished

the obvious sense of relief that seemed to be on your face. there's a video right there of you finishing that program. when you finished it did you know -- did you know in that moment, i nailed it? i've got the gold? >> you know, that was not one of the first thoughts i had. in that last spin i thought i did enough in my mind it was enough to win the gold but, yeah, a lot of emotions in that moment. just so happy. >> everyone back home obviously proud. social media, sir elton john. sir elton john posted. you used his song to win the gold. here's a tweet from elton john, congratulations, nathan chen, for winning gold skating in the finals in beijing. when you saw that, what did you

think? >> couldn't believe it was real. yeah, the fact that he knows that i am alive and i exist -- >> i think everyone knows that you're alive and you exist. >> pretty cool. >> a few years ago you got the flu after you competed. this time you're going to stick around for the next week or so, is that right? >> yeah. hopefully not get the flu again. >> how else are you going to be spending the next seven days? >> figure skating ahead of us in the next couple of weeks. it will be fun to be here. >> are you going to try to get to a hockey match as well? >> absolutely. i played hockey growing up. >> i heard that nathan chen was a hockey player. get out there? >> i haven't played in a long time but i would love to. >> the super bowl of course on sunday.

won olympic gold last night in primetime. i was there live and i just sat down with him a couple of hours ago here in beijing about what's next. what's next? you're going back to school, you're going back to yale? >> yes. >> do you know what you're going to study, what you're going to

do after figure skating? >> for sure. still more thought that i had to put into that, but right now definitely enjoy the olympics and enjoy the rest of the experience the rest of this month. and head back to yale in august, so then i have two more years before i graduate. from there decide what i want to do. still -- >> do you know what you're going to major in? >> i'm majoring in statistics and data science. a lot of math, a lot of psats to come. >> you probably carried a lot of weight on your shoulders the last four years. is that weight finally gone? >> i would say yes to an extent. 2018 was not my best skate. i learned so much from that skate. it gave me so much experience and pushed me forward in a very drastic way. and without having had that experience, i don't think i would be able to make it to where i am now. of course, that ties in my coaches and my training team and just my whole team around me. and they were so supportive in that time, supported me all the way till now. without that it would have been challenging.

here we are in the super bowl city. you know what, it's about the rams and the bengals. something happened cool for the bear. the 49ers stole the show. we'll tell you why? just a minute. let's start on the red carpet. think of this as the opening night of the super bowl and, well, let's see. the oscars, right, the academy awards for the national football league. i even walked the red carpet before all the real v.i.p.s got here. this is the nfl honors, a lot of bling, green suits, glamor, a lot of faces coming together to celebrate the super bowl kicking off here down in l.a. >> the energy. i mean, it never gets old, right. i mean, just everyone, seeing -- running into people that you have known through the years as well, and then just all the excitement. >> so, raj, i coached 15 years in college, 15 years in the pros, but this is my 17th super bowl in television. i had no idea i was even going

now 20% containment, up from just 5% this afternoon. certainly a scary sight in southern california. let's bring in meteorologist rob maeda. rob, it's so warm here, too. we've got these record-breaking temperatures that it's a little ear i. because it feels like we could be in fire season. >> yeah, they've been saying that in southern california. and it could go down as raj was about to experience, as the warmest or hottest start to the super bowl we've ever seen. we were looking at temperatures in l.a. mid to upper 80s on sunday. back in the bay area we broke all kinds of records today. 79 was the high in san jose and oakland. 78 at sfo, 78 in salinas. not only broke records for today, they broke all-time records for the month of february. we set all-time records in february. tomorrow likely as well. san francisco still in the 60s right now. few areas making a run at 80 degrees for friday. we'll have a closer look at who will be the hottest tomorrow in the forecast coming up in about 8 minutes. >> we'll see you then. thank you, rob. now, that f
