4:31 am
you can also watch us live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and, of course, online. let's start out with a look at that friday forecast. good morning, kari. >> good morning. yes, we're starting out cool once again, but it was so warm yesterday afternoon. numerous high temperature records were set. we're still going to be very close today. take a look at our trend, where we're headed for today, as we take a live look outside in san jose. we'll start out with the temperature around 50 degrees and then see temperatures rising into the mid-60s by late morning, headed back into the 70s for today. and santa rosa, we'll reach back into the upper 70s this afternoon. san francisco mid-70s and mid to upper 70s for the east bay, the peninsula, as well as the south bay. pretty warm start to the weekend and it looks like it continues for a little while. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you were looking at a hazard on the bay bridge. >> yeah, a disabled vehicle. it's at the bottom of the maps
4:32 am
right here. the arrows show you away from san francisco, lower deck, there may be a disabled vehicle going on blocking one lane. light traffic right now, so just use caution leaving san francisco. the commute coming in toward the bay bridge and through contra costa county is fine, same thing alameda county, south bay and peninsula, where we take a live look at palo alto. drivers will about to get another option getting out of the gridlock, one of the bay area's most crowded freeways, the 101, starting today the express lanes open between san mateo and santa clarita county. robert handa is showing us the new lanes and why some are not happy, calling them roads for the rich. >> reporter: the commuter rush is slowly but surely returning to the 101 here along the peninsula. local transit agencies say drivers will have another option to get around the backup, but it comes with a price. >> drivers on highway 101 saw a
4:33 am
lot of reminders express lanes will open from the san mateo line to redwood avenue. this driver likes the option, but not the cost of a fas trak trans responder or a toll free. >> no traffic in the express lane, that's good. but the line is having too much traffic. >> the expense? >> a little bit expense, but should be trying to make it cheaper. >> reporter: transit groups, as well as the city celebrated this first phase of an overall $56 million plan to provide more than 100 miles of express lanes in the bay area. >> we'll be completing the horseshoe that starts with redwood city, to 380. bay side and then back to 237 to the 101 and peninsula segment. >> reporter: the toll for a solo
4:34 am
driver to use them will vary based on congestion. transportation officials say they're well aware some critics call express lanes rich lanes or lexus lanes and plan to use toll revenue to help drivers get fas trak and clipper cards. >> we are partnering with some community benefit organizations like samaritan house and they will find those people that are in need. they have a lot of clients that they will refer our program to and help them get enrolled in the program. >> reporter: how well drivers respond to these new express lanes could make a difference in the overall project, since state and federal money are still needed to get it all done. in mountain view, robert handa, nbc bay area news. this morning, still no word on the identity of the man who was shot and killed last night at san francisco's civic center b.a.r.t. station. the shooting happened shortly before 9:00 p.m. officers responded quickly, arrest today man in connection with the shooting. police are not saying if they've
4:35 am
determined a motive. a former u.s. air force sergeant accused of shooting and killing a federal security officer is expected to plead guilty. he originally pleaded not guilty for the death of underwood, who was guarding a federal building in oakland in may of 2020 during protests against police brutality. court records show he will change his plea this morning. prosecutors say he had ties to a movement of far right anti-government extremists. a week after the shooting, he allegedly ambushed sheriff deputies in santa cruz county, killing a deputy. he's pleaded not guilty to the charges. one north bay county has lifted its restriction on large gatherings. back in january sonoma county health officials set a 50-person maximum indoor and 100-person maximum outdoor restriction on gatherings when they saw covid rise in the case numbers. health leaders say they believe
4:36 am
the county is now past the peak of winter surge, because cases and hospitalizations are declining. the omicron subvariant, ba.2 is now becoming a dominant strain in some countries. new data out of south africa shows ba.2 is prevalent. the case numbers are still dropping. some experts say the second version of omicron won't lead to a new surge, however others say it's too early to tell. >> anybody who says that ba.2 is going to not make any difference or if anybody says that ba.2 is going to make an enormous difference and cause another wave, anything in between that, they're just guessing at this point. >> the world health organization says ba.2 is easier to catch but is mild. changes are coming to your tv streaming lineup. next here on "today in the bay," the reason several shows are being pulled from one popular app. >> plus, making a comeback. the upgrade movie pass makes a comeback.
4:37 am
>> we're checking out your forecast as you're heading out the door in the east bay, heading to work with temperatures in the mid-40s. we are going to see another beautiful, warm day to enjoy outside. but we'll talk about when we go back to what's normal for february coming up. >> and we'll take you outside, normal volume of traffic for the nimitz. headlights heading south past tesla and into silicon valley without a problem for the nimitz. we'll show you how things are shaping up for your longer drive coming up.
4:38 am
4:39 am

4:40 am
right now at 4:39, it's going to be another great day for heading out for a hike. in the south bay our temperatures start out with some upper 40s, cool morning, but take a look at the trend going into the afternoon as we reach into the mid to upper 70s today. this weather will not last long. we'll talk more about big changes ahead in our forecast coming up. >> enjoy it while it lasts. over at the peninsula we're getting express lanes active. we'll talk more about that. in the north bay, 101 moves very smoothly southbound with headlights. it's friday morning light traffic. also the north bay has wineries. here's bertha. >> that is one of my favorite things, i'm thinking back to times i've spent in sonoma
4:41 am
county, great food, great relaxation. not so relaxing in the markets. i'm bertha coombs with cnbc. wall street set to open modestly lower but we're coming off a sharp sell down that was spurred by the hottest inflation, prices up 10.5% on average. the report prompting a top federal reserve official to call for bigger interest rate hikes this year. and coming faster. the bond yield spiked on that news. we saw the ten-year treasury note, interest rate topping 2% for the first time since december of 2019. if you're shopping for a mortgage, bad news. that's where it trickles in. the markets, meantime, are pricing in a 100% chance of the fed hiking rates by half a percent next month. the dow dropped by more than 500 points yesterday. the s&p 500 and nasdaq were both down about 2% on the day.
4:42 am
still, all three are on pace to be up for the third straight week. meantime, nbc universal, the parent company of this station and cnbc, is finalizing plans to shift some high profile content from hulu to peacock. the "wall street journal" reports starting this fall new episodes of shows like "the voice" and "saturday night live" will no longer be on hulu soon after they air. they're taking several steps to support peacock. nbc parent comcast owns one-third of hulu but disney owns the rest of it. meantime, movie pass is coming back this summer. co-founder stacey spikes who bought the company back out of bankruptcy, says that movie pass 2.0 will have a type of virtual currency. members will have credits that they can use for tickets, for themselves and friends, unused credits will roll over to the next month.
4:43 am
and you can actually transfer them to other people. the new movie pass app will show you how many credits you have available and screenings that are available at theatres. but movies during peak times on saturday or friday might actually cost you more. but we're all used to that when we use our points. i like systems with points. it works for me. >> it works for me, too. >> the more i hear, you're ready to treat me to a weekend if sonoma. >> we would love to have your company here in the bay area. come any time. >> bertha, come on down. >> come on down! bertha coombs, you're the next winner. >> massages. >> doesn't that sound lovely? >> i'm so there. >> let's plan it. let's make it happen, my friend. >> we'll have our people call your people. >> which means i'll just be calling you. thanks so much, bertha. well, this morning an east bay grocery store closing its doors for good.
4:44 am

4:45 am
4:46 am
good friday morning. the time now is 4:46. i want to show you this live view in dublin as you're waking up and heading out this morning. we're already seeing a lot of commuters on 580. if you're about to head out the door, it is another cool start. but visibility is clear and we
4:47 am
are going to see temperatures warming up. as we take a look at our trend in novato, parts of the north bay in the low 40s right now and we can see that we'll hold steady in the low 40s around sunrise, and then seeing our trend going up as our temperatures warm up quickly again today. it's going to be a comfortable lunch outside, and then we'll make it into the mid to upper 70s for today. oakland headed for 76 degrees and that's the time, 3:30 this afternoon. we'll see the middle of the afternoon temperatures feeling very warm compared to the way we start the day. as you're looking at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, we do have a few more days like that, but then a drop-off in temperatures early next week. so here's what's going on. we have a large area of high pressure out there over the pacific, but we're also seeing a couple of storm systems well off to the west. and we may start to see a change in this weather pattern as high pressure kind of retreats. it allows for some colder air and a low to dip in.
4:48 am
but it's going to be really starved for moisture, meaning that for us it's not going to bring much in the way of rain, but maybe it will bring light snowflakes to the sierra early next week. as the high pressure begins to move, we may start to see this opening up the door and allowing for some rain to come in by the end of the month. that's really a far way out, so we're really uncertain on how much rain we could see. i'm running this model out ten days and it shows very little amounts of rainfall for us. maybe a better chance farther to the north. there will be a big drop in temperatures. take a look at livermore. upper 70s for the next few days, throughout the weekend, monday is when we'll have to pull the heavier jackets back out. temperatures only reaching into the low 60s and then gradually warming back up. as we take a look at our seven-day forecast, temperatures will still continue to be warm throughout the weekend and really gusty on valentine's day as highs reach into the low 60s. you can see most of the 60s will
4:49 am
continue for valley temperatures for next week. and like you were looking at the road ahead. >> i encourage drivers to always do that, look at the road ahead and at the signs. as we take a look at the map, the signs for speeds showing green, which is great. we can look ahead at what's coming up today, starting in just 11 minutes, the toll lanes will be active, which will mean they will change for fas trak riders and you need a trans responder to use the lanes on the peninsula between al palo alto and redwood city. there will be lanes closed tonight, but the bridge will remain weekend. the rest of the approaches and bridges move smoothly. back to you. >> we notice them. and you may have noticed almost everything you're paying these days is costing more. index jumping 7.5% in the past year.
4:50 am
>> that's a 40-year high. those rates are really hurting small businesses trying to make it in the east bay. >> reporter: the community food market, the only urban grocery store serving west oakland is closing for good. >> we started out fairly underresourced as a small business in the very beginning, so that's always tough. not unusual, but tough. and then the pandemic really hit us hard. >> reporter: the pandemic causing customer traffic to decline about 40%. and now the supply chain is making things even worse. >> all of our orders are coming in significantly short of what we're ordering, and so you've got a lot of holes on the shelves. >> reporter: this market has been struggling financially for a long time. the owner says once the inflation numbers hit, he had no choice but to shut it down. >> the rate of inflation has been moving so fast it's been really hard to keep up with price changes. >> reporter: inflation is not only forcing this market is close, it's boosting used car
4:51 am
and gas prices and even the cost of staying in a hotel. monica hudson, business professor at the university of san francisco, says inflation now seems more permanent. >> i think that's particularly of concern for people who thought they just got a raise and now that raise has been eaten up by increases in prices. >> reporter: some may look at the government to fight inflation. that may mean a jump in interest rates. economists say you have to spend less mon p down debt. for the average person, that will be a hard thing to do. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." switching gears, nfl royalty on the red carpet. ahead on "today in the bay," why the 49ers are making news at the super bowl this weekend. we'll break it all down after the break. >> first, happening now, san jose getting closer to approval room for 21 new cannabis dispensaries. if approved, the dispensaries
4:52 am
would increase to 37. this week planners okayed the proposal. now, it's a new move, the city council is doing this, and they'll debate the ordinance next week. it would widen the zoning for delivery-only businesses. we'll be right back.
4:53 am
