7.5%. i think it was back in july you said inflation was going to be temporary. i think a lot of americans are wondering what your definition of temporary is. >> well, you are being a wise guy with me a little bit. i understand that's your job. reason is the supply chains were cutoff, neon meaning, for example, automobile, the lack of computer chips to be able to build automobiles so they could function. they need those computer chips. >> when can americans expect some relief from this soaring inflation. according to noble laureates and a number of corporate leaders ought to be able to taper off as we go through the year. >> you came to virginia, a swing district, prescription drug prices, build back better. what do you see in build back better that gives you confidence it can still happen? what's changed if anything. >> well i don't think anything's changed. it's people are now realizing what is in build back better. for example, the cancer drugs we have in the united states cost $14,000 a month. in france the same manufacturer, same drug costs $7,000. >> you said people didn't know

at the soaring prices. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so many people are already feeling the pinch here and what sets it apart is the fact it is hitting everything. from gas to groceries, even cars and this morning a lot of people are wondering just how much longer this will last. this morning, inflation sticker shock with the u.s. hitting a 40 year high. consumer prices surging 7.5% the last year. the largest increase since 1982 and americans feeling the pinch yet again. >> everything. everything is -- i, i'm blown away. >> reporter: financial analysts estimate the afternoon american family is now spending an extra $275 every month and it is hitting hard. >> even though wages are growing. inflation is growing faster. while our paychecks are bigger, it doesn't go very far. almost everything we're buying in life costs a lot more. >> at the store, eye popping

prices. she had to cut her grocery run short after prices succeeded her budget. >> where are you see the prices most go up? >> meat. definitely meat. >> she's right. according to the nbc news grocery tracker the cost for chicken is up an average 31 cents the last year. ground beef 82 cents. bacon spiking by nearly a dollar and a quarter. assuming you can even find those items. pandemic supply chain struggles haven't let up and experts say that is what's fuelling this record inflation. in jacksonville, he fills up at the pump at least once a week. >> 70 bucks to fill it up. if i was in a pickup truck it would be 115 dollars, 120. >> and that's what a 40% increase in gas prices looks like. inflation also taking a toll on small businesses.

russian skater kamila valieva. an urgent hearing will be held to determine if valieva will be allowed to compete in the women's figure skating event next week. she led the russian olympic committee to gold in the team event. over night, the internationa testing agency confirming a sample taken from the teenager six weeks ago came back positive for a banned substance the russian anti-doping agency suspended her. but lifted that suspension after valieva challenged it, allowing her to compete in beijing. now, the ita says it will appeal that on behalf of international olympic committee, as well as the world anti-doping agency the russian olympic committee says valieva has received negative results before and after the positive tests including here in beijing. guys, the russian side still hasn't explained their decision
