right now at 5:00, a high stakes call -- at 3:00, i should say. a high stakes call between the u.s. and russia as officials warn an invasion of ukraine could come any day now. the urgent warning to any americans still in that country. super bowl sunday nearly here. we're bringing you team coverage ahead of the forecast. plus that forecast with a super warm winter. the wait may be longer for young children to get a covid shot. why a pharma giant is slowing down plans to roll out a new vaccine for kids under 5:00.

is. thanks for joining us. i'm audrey asistio. >> i'm jessica aguirre. pfizer plans to pause its vaccine for children under 5. it was originally expected to vaccinate that age group in the coming weeks. now it won't be happening that soon. pfizer says it will wait to review more data on the impact of three doses of the shot. it says three shots may provide better protection for this age group instead of two. that data is expected in early april. let's take you outside. just a little over 48 hours away. super bowl lvi will happen in los angeles. the rams facing off against the cincinnati bengals. you'll be able to see it right here on nbc bay area. we have team coverage of the big game tonight. meteorologist rob mayeda has a look at the really warm weather we're having, especially for a super bowl. first, raj joins us from englewood. can you feel the excitement, raj? >> reporter: i can feel the

excitement and i can feel the heat. tell rob, your accurate forecast here, it feels like 100 degrees. what's happening here is a lot of dress rehearsals, not for the bengals or the rams but actually the musicians. there's a big stage over my right shoulder. they're practicing, you can hear the band going. not sure if it's snoop dogg and those guys, they'll be inside the stadium at sofi. not sure if they're here today but of course we'll see them sunday. here are some of the ticket prices. good news is there are plenty of tickets available, being sold at a rapid pace. the downside, the cost alone. you want to sit with my style seats, fifth deck, the upper-upper row? $3,000 is the cheapest seat to get in. the average price, $8,000. if you're a vip, $49,000 right now on stub hub for real prime seats. so come on down. or just watch it on nbc on

sunday afternoon. bryant young, you may have seen this last night, he found out he's getting into the hall of fame. he's the standout 49ers defensive linemen in the 1990s and early 2000s. bryant young did know anything about this until last night. his wife kind of knew. the league told the wife to be ready for this. the team knew. even some of the other legend knew. we spoke with b.y. today in a real nice moment. >> she probably knew before i would. she did not respond to that. >> it was like, game face. his face that when he played with, people said he kind of had this poker face. i was like, hmm, yeah, i probably would know. >> reporter: christie young knew about it, bryant young knew about it last night. congratulations to him. we have a lot of reporters, producers, and photographers here in l.a. covering this game. let's bring in nbc bay area's anthony flores, he's ten miles away from where i am, on the ucla campus, about a 45 minute

drive with l.a. traffic. you're hanging out with the bay area bengals. >> reporter: that's right, raj. the 49ers fell one win short of making it to super bowl lvi. but the bay area will be well represented on sunday. players and coaches from the rams and the bengals have strong ties to the bay area. today at ucla the bengals held their final practice and first in-person media session in preparation for super bowl lvi. of course, joe grew up in antioch, and went on to star at freedom high school in oakley. number 22 was a standout at oak grove high school in san jose. safety michael thomas was originally signed as a free agent with the 49ers after going to stanford. they all say they know they'll have a lot of bay area support on super sunday.

well in the middle of winter. it's still february. >> that's right, and raj mentioned it, actually the heat advisory is up for the super bowl at l.a. if we see a game time temperature of about 85 degrees, that would be the warmest ever to start a super bowl. as you can see, 3:30 sunday afternoon, pretty close to that. we could be breaking records for the super bowl in southern california. closer to home, we've already broken a record high in san jose, 77 degrees so far today. we're as warm as close to 80 in fremont and saratoga, 83 in scotts valley. yes, the weekend could break more records for high temperatures. but get ready for a case of weather whiplash. monday and tuesday, windy, cooler temperatures, and possibly see rather snow showers. we'll let you know about the forecast coming up in about eight minutes. >> thank you, rob. super bowl party checklist for this year. beer, chips, masks, and covid tests. but as nbc bay area's stephanie

magayone explains, the demand for rapid covid tests remains sky high across the game. >> reporter: especially ahead of the big game this weekend. >> so we can get tested and make sure we're okay and cheer on our team. >> rep their super bowl watch party and that includes a trip to the gilroy public library to get their hands on four free covid tests and a few n95 masks. >> my daughter has a friend and their friend, and so we are getting together at her friend's house in gilroy. >> reporter: these long lines have in common at the various locations where the county has been handing out 30,000 free rapid covid tests. two other libraries are completely out, milpitas and cupertino. >> many hundreds of people have been able to get these tests. >> reporter: today they handed out over 1,200 tests and the last lot will go out tomorrow in

morgan hills. there are still other ways to get tested if you miss that opportunity. >> you can go to the public health website, you can go to one of your medical providers. we'll continue to look at if there's a need in the community, how we can serve that. >> reporter: you can receive up to eight free rapid covid-19 home tests at santa clara county pharmacies. a good game plan if your weekend includes a super bowl party. stephanie magayone, nbc news. cases continue to drop along with other key indicators for the pandemic. california's positivity rate is down to nearly 8%. we still have over 9,200 patients in the hospital. that's down almost 5% from the last update. statewide, the virus did kill more than 360 people, which is lower than what we've seen since the pandemic began. and tonight at 4:00, an nbc bay area exclusive with california governor gavin newsom. we go one on one with the

governor. one of the things we talked about, his evolving plan for managing covid. how he responded when we asked him about the timeline for changing mask rules for california schools. that's coming up on nbc bay area at 4:00. the white house is escalating its warning about a possible russian invasion of ukraine, saying it could happen within days. president biden's national security adviser now urging americans to leave ukraine immediately. a senior defense official confirms the remaining 3,000 soldiers based on fort bragg have been ordered to poland, a nato ally. president biden insists u.s. troops will not enter ukraine. he left today for a working weekend at camp david. tomorrow he'll talk by phone with russian leader vladimir putin. a live look at the olympic torch in beijing, as team usa tries to move up on medal count. >> the women's hockey team overcame a performance by the czech republican. the usa team won 4-1 and

put on the flag-raising. we're talking about the way the soldiers flip the flags to unfurl them as they start to rise. more than a few times, the soldier flips the flag. he can't acts like anything wrong, so he salutes as the flag slowly drags over his face. >> looks like an "snl" skit. >> one thing we know we won't see in future olympics, as you guys just mentioned, is shaun white competing again, which is just what made his post-competition interview so emotional and worth sharing again. this is a man who came in fourth. he said goodbye to something that has dominated his life for 20 years and has given him so much of what he has today. it's a tough goodbye and it all came out when he got a chance to see his family back home.

chilling moments at a federal district court in san francisco today. former air force security specialist steven carrillo spelled out exactly how he carried out an attack, a drive-by attack that killed one federal security officer and wounded another in oakland nearly two years carrillo's

plea deal deal that would send to jail for over 40 years. >> reporter: in court, the former air force sergeant and admitted extremist steven carrillo described in detail what he did and why. the federal district court judge made him read out paragraphs of his admission of guilt into the court record. he's accused in the murder of federal security protective officer david patrick underwood on may 29th, 2020, in oakland as people were protesting the death of george floyd. in court he said, i went with the intent to harm the government. he admitted to riding with his accomplice in a white ford van. i opened the rear passenger side sliding door and opened fire at the officers at the federal building. he said he fired 19 shots, hitting officer underwood who died, and his partner who survived the carrillo read out

of what he is admitting to, members of the victim's family gasped and a couple of them left the courtroom. >> he is a domestic terrorist. because he is with the armed forces, he should be held with a higher standard. >> reporter: david underwood's sister said they should be celebrating his birthday tomorrow. instead they'll likely be visiting his gravesite to on him. they mixed feelings about the 41-year prison term in the plea agreement instead of the possibility of a death penalty if the case went to court. the santa cruz county district attorney is still pursuing murder charges in the death of officer damon gutzwiller when he reported a white van that looked suspicious. >> we're moving forward on that case and committed to seeking justice for our community and for the families that were affected. >> reporter: sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. there's been an arrest at

san francisco's b.a.r.t. station. two officers who just stepped off a train were able to take the suspected gunman into custody. the victim was rushed to the hospital but did later die. b.a.r.t.'s police chief said the shooting appeared to be targeted, not random. but detectives have no motive at this point. >> we don't. as of last night, our detectives had the opportunity to interview him. he did invoke his rights. as of this morning we're trying to figure out the motive. >> the chief says surveillance video captured the killing. they'll also examine ground level surveillance video from nearby businesses to determine what led to that shooting. the search is on for a missing teen in the east bay. this is 15-year-old kendall gibson. he was last seen in the bay view neighborhood of san pablo shortly before midnight yesterday. investigators say he may have been spotted near a shopping center early this morning. investigators say he is

considered at risk. so if you see him, you are urged to call contra costa county sheriff's office. another school walkout today in oakland. nbc bay area sky ranger overhea merge nearly a dozen schools. the closures were approved earlier this week and it sparked protests, even a hunger strike by two teachers. the district says enrollment is down so it has to close or merge schools. open today on the peninsula, those new express lanes on highway 101. you can now use the new lanes between redwood city and the santa clara county line. here's how it works, though. if you're the only person in your car, you'll have to pay to drive in what used to be the hov lane and you have to have a fast track. your toll will be based on the amount of traffic on the road. it can range from 50 cents per

zone to several dollars. carpoolers are still free as long as you have a fastrak flex transponder. you indicate on it how many people you have in your car. drivers with a sticker will qualify for a 50% discount on the toll. phase 2 will extend the express lanes in both directions of 101. let's switch to a live look from san francisco. nice and sunny out there. it is winter on the calendar but hasn't felt like it. meteorologist rob mayeda is in today. it's a super bowl weekend, how' plans this weekend. of temperatures kind of like we're seeing outside right now which in the case of san jose, 77 degrees. that's a new record high. the old record was 73. you've got the sunshine, hazy skies. towards livermore, 75 currently. average highs this time of year ought to be in the low 60s so well above average in terms of the temperatures. 74 in walnut creek.

san francisco, clear skies, haze in the air, 72 degrees currently in san francisco. one change later on this evening, increasing high clouds will start the day tomorrow with some high clouds over the bay area, which by the way could make for a beautiful sunrise tomorrow morning if you're out extra early. after 9:00, the clouds start to clear out of the south bay. sunshine, and if you loved today's temperatures, we're going to see the exact same thing, a copy and paste forecast, into saturday. 40s and 50s to start things off around 7:00 a.m. by lunchtime, upper 60s and low 70s. for those outdoor plans. and look at the high temperatures again tomorrow. could be close to 80 in san jose and san martin. you notice here in the north bay, mid-70s. mid-70s towards the tri valley, san francisco and oakland. super bowl sunday plans, a little bit cooler. we'll begin to see temperatures dropping off, 60s to low 70s around san francisco and oakland. that's above average. maybe not quite record breaking, on sunday as temperatures come down just slightly, mid-70s around san jose. should be perfect for those outdoor plans again on sunday.

get ready, big changes coming our way monday and tuesday. notice this weather system that, unfortunately for us, is dropping inland. so the sierra actually will see a chance of some snow at times. monday night into tuesday. we'll zoom in for you hour by hour over the bay area. you see that on the futurecast. maybe lake county gets a shower or two. most of the showers unfortunately look like they're going to stay to the east. what we won't miss out on, though, unfortunately, is the wind. this is what's really going to drive our temperatures down. monday into tuesday, we may see wind advisories up for the peninsula and the coast. so we'll be tracking this forecast for you this weekend to see if those wind advisories get hoisted, as you notice. by monday night, valentine's night, into tuesday morning, those wind speeds could be 20 to 40 miles per hour. and just look at the high temperatures on monday. don't let this catch you by surprise. you're being told about it now. we could be looking at upper 50s and low 60s. and with the wind on monday, that is going to be a big pattern change. but the good news, it's after

the weekend. look at san francisco, going from 70s to 50s by tuesday. that looks a bit more like february weather. next week, wind picks up, could see sierra snow showers. those outdoor decorations, bring them inside, they could get blown around quite a bit monday into tuesday. the weekend looks warm but cooler and windy as we head into next week. looks like the sierra has a decent chance of getting snow early next week. >> that's good. the windy is bad, but the snow is good. thank you. if it's good to be true, don't fall for it. a warning from the fbi on how scammers will try to play your heart strings as they close in on valentine's day.
