enhancing national gateways like this one. >> it is i think going to make an impact to tens of thousands of people that drive in, who say, hold on, things are looking a bit better in the bay. >> reporter: the governor is excited about his new project to beautify california. more on that in a minute. but first the main announcement next week. california's plan as covid moves from a pandemic to an endemic. >> what does the surveillance look like? what did the testing protocol look like? what does our preparedness look like? >> in other words, how do we learn to live with covid. the governor says his team will have it all mapped out by next thursday, including the future of mask wears in schools. >> we are in the process of transforming or public education system, moving out this pandemic mindset, and that includes masks.

that will happen. >> reporter: as far as a time line for mandate vaccines for students, that's still in process. >> the legislature is adjudicating their approach to that. >> reporter: now to the massive clean california plan. it's a $300 million project to transform gateways like this one from a play full of garbage and homeless encampments to something like this, with gardens, dog parks and. >> they didn't do a damn thing, and now we finally got the money. >> reporter: 126 other sites across the state will get a similar transformation this year, managing covid and clean streets, two very daunting tasks for a state trying to find its new normal. in san francisco, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. it's something that parents don't want to here.

pfizer announced it's pausing the application for the todd for use of the covid vaccine in children under 5 years old. this means that the two-dose vaccines won't be available in the next few weeks for children ages 6 months to 4-year-old as initially expected. indeed pfizer announced it wants to wait for more data on the effectiveness for toddlers. the company has said trials suggested the two doses may not generate a strong enough immune spokens in very young children. data on the third dose is expected in april. we are constantly updating the streaming app with the very latest news. all you have to do is download it for your tv or roku. a teenager is missing. 15-year-old kendall gibson, last seen in the bayview neighborhood of san pablo. he may have been spotted earlier this morning. investigators say he's

considered at risk. if you see him, make sure you call the sheriff's office. a did you development in the deadly shooting at the san francisco civic center b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. police say several officers were already at the station when the shooting happened. two officers who had just stepped off the train, were able to take the suspected gunman into custody. the victim was rushed to the hospital, but did later die. police say the shooting tend to be -- >> last night our -- he did invoke his rights, so as of this morning we're still trying to figure out the motive. >> they're also going to examine ground-level surveillance to determine what led up to the shooting. let's switch gears, and going to something happier. southern california, lieu how

the nfl says, yes, 47% of the people are women who will be watching, and the ads are started towards women. so we will all be watching that telecast together. let's talk about the teams. the bengals and rams, both teams practicing today. here is the bengals practice, but ten miles away from sofi stadium at the ucla campus. the bengals are slight underdogs to the ram. they're 0-2 when they went to the super bowl. i've got to say it's a bit eerie being here, it was just a couple weeks ago that danny luna was punched in the face and is now in critical condition. we have an update from his lawyer. his lawyer tells us danny luna had surgery last friday, where they had to remove part of his

skull in order to relief brain. obviously a very serious luna is the chef/owner of the popular peruvian restaurant in oakland. as for the parking lot, the investigation continue to say exactly what happened. had that that january 30th before the rams/49ers nfc championship game the mayor of engelwood said luna pushed a man from behind, the man retaliated, punched him, and luna fell to the ground. daniel luna's lawyer giving us this statement -- keep in mind, this is down here in southern california. daniel's family has no comment on the ongoing criminal investigation, as nobody has seen what is likely hours of videotape from that day. speaking of the mayor of

spotlight. our business and tech reporter sat down with the company that's been testing athletes for 50 years. >> reporter: under a cloud of controversy kamila continues to practice. while she prepares for next tuesday's individual competition, the world is debating a drug test the 15-year-old russian skater took in december that came back positive for a banned substance. >> you can bet your bottom dollar we are doing everything that the situation can be resolved as soon as possible. we have athletes involved. >> reporter: it wasn't until after valiyeva skated and won gold that the earlier positive test came to light. officials explained overnight her pregame test was not made public, because she appealed it in russia, and because of the

15-year-old, her test results are protected from public release. the question is now whether that test before the games should eliminate her, invalidating the entire russia team's gold medal performance this week. the whole thing has mutt even more of a spotlight on drug testing, testing done by mass spectrometers. >> the sensitive of the instrumentation really matters. >> reporter: complex machines that, as agilent tells us, can sniff out a positive test quickly. >> if you put one raindrop worth of thinks restricted compound into an olympic-size swimming pool, our instruments actually have the capability to go out and detect that. >> reporter: it says it does not comment on individual tests or individual athletes. the russian olympic committee

welcome back. san jose is on a pace when it comes do deaths and injuries related to vehicles. the city has already seen 12 fatal accidents, most involving petitions or cyclists. the latest was just last night at an intersection where fatal crashes are becoming all too family. >> reporter: san jose does have an overall problem, but this interat almaden and foxworthy avenue, has seen more of its share of accidents and tragedy.

>> rochelle takes care of the memoriam where her cousins were killed. they were struck by a vehicle outside the crosswack january 18th. valentine was saddened, but not surprised that case is still under investigated. police say the bicyclists may have been crossing again a red light. she points out another pedestrian was killed in the same area just after christmas. >> i don't think automobile person has been sit here in the same spot, it's hard does that -- heart breaking. another person that works off the expressway agreed. >> you're going pretty fast. once you get over the overpass, it's like you beat it and then there's a lot of people sometimes they're not in the

right places. >> reporter: san jose police believes over 0% cob prevented it if people involved followed traffic laws. there have already been 12 fatal collision, 13 victims, including nine pedestrians. police say the incidents have officers even more focused on traffic enforcement. >> keeping that in mind, if you are speeding on the roadway, failing to yield as a passenger, you may receive a ticket. it's not to punish somebody, but change behaviors so we can save lives. >> it's not fair to us that he was taken so soon, but i don't want this on anybody else. so just be carb of everything. >> reporter: in san jose, robert honda, -- handa, nbc bay air

news. a man and hi girlfriend were walking to the car when someone approached them and fired two shots. the man was hit once in the hand, once in the foot. the shooter took off in a white bmw. police are still looking for that person. anyone with information is asked to contact palo alto pd. local leaders with hard hats and gold shovels marked the start of a memorial plaza honoring 8,000 local residents of japanese ancestry, what were imprison add what was known as the racetrack. the bronze statue is the centerpiece. it became an assembly center. families were assigned to poorly built -- and the man who

we will see more high clouds tomorrow night. they should clear out setting the stage for another day. so, again, dressing in layers for the morning. you have 40so 40s and 50s from about 9:00, and by lunchtime, low 70s throughout the santa clara valley, and these highs again tomorrow, anything in the upper 07 for a record high. it looks like we'll see it again around san jose. by changes are coming up. there's the seven-day forecast. some cold air out of the gulf of alaska. it's been a while. monday night and tuesday, finally it looks like snow showers will be passing by.

that's a welcome sight. we certainly need the snow? the sierra. that storm coming in will be cold enough, about the blue canyon level, maybe 4,000 to 5,000 feet. that's the exact same time frame in the future cast, nothing here around the bay area. most of the moisture will be off to the east. this will create some wind. this is what's going to drop temperatures into the monday. wind gusts could be about 20 to 40 miles an hour. our high temperatures are really going to drop. look at super bowl sunday fans then by monday, upper 60s so that's about a 20-degree drop in temperatures once we get out of the weekend. so weekend plans should be just fine. so highs a bit of a reality check. snow for the sierra.
