latest from the white house. josh. >> reporter: good morning, peter. the u.s. is evacuating most diplomats from the embassy in the capital. leaving behind a small staff as signs point to military confrontation. this morning, president biden set to speak with russian leader vladimir putin. in a last-ditch attempt to avert a crisis in ukraine. >> we continue to see very troubling signs of are russian escalation. we are in the window when a russian invasion could start at anytime if president putin decides. he has put in place the capacity to act on very short notice. >> reporter: secretary blinken promising russia will face sanctions if they invade ukraine. >> if russia chooses the path of aggression, it will face mask sif consequences.

ukraine. president biden will be at camp david today when he takes the w. their fifth since mr. biden took office. peter and kristen. >> thank you, josh. >> we turn to erin mclaughlin in kyiv this morning for a look on the ground in ukraine. erin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kristen. this morning, the state department has ordered most of its direct higher employees to leave u.s. adding that as of tomorrow, it will no longer be providing con you lar services in ukraine. it will maintain a small staff in the western city for emergency purposes only. we heard from the russian foreign ministry this morning saying it is optimiing the staffing levels across ukraine. widely seen as an indication that the russians withdrawing

the diplomatic staff. this as for days the united states has been warning its citizens in uave been speaking americans who say they are going to stay. we spoke to retiree dave egan who said he lived here for three years and this is home now. listen. >> i'm not going anywhere. i don't know what's going to happen, but i'm not running. i have too many friends here. this is my home. i like it here. i just, you has been stuff. >> reporter: this morning, we heard from the mayor of kyiv in a statement saying he is working to secure the capital's water and power supply. other than that, it is a normal saturday here. no signs of ukrainians panicking. for weeks now, the ukrainian government has been downplaying this threat. we did hear from the ukrainian foreign ministry this morning

urging everyone to remain calm. the ukrainian military stands ready to respond to any russian attack. guys. >> as tensions mount around the globe. erin, thank you. back here at home. an important u.s. border crossing with canada remains blocked this morning despite the court order on friday for the truckers and demonstrators blocking it to clear the way. nbc's ron allen is following the development. ron, this is having big ramifications. >> yes. a lot of goods not getting where they need. fewer protesters out there, but the ambassador bridge remains closed. 25% of u.s. and canada trade pass over that bridge. the blockade is part of the larger demonstration that paralyzed the capital for two weeks.

last night, there were parties all across los angeles, but for the players, it was time to rest up and get minds right. i had a chance to speak with the bengals who say they are gelling right now. they are not too concerned about the heat you mentioned. they had a warning for anyone who underestimates them. super bowl lvi set to kickoff tomorrow. the scene has never been hotter. a sellout crowd of 70,000 and paying top dollar. $3,000 just to get in the door. the prices have been fluctuatin. >> kupp. >> reporter: rams playing on home turf and they are the favorites. cincinnati is a worthy cinderella. joe burrow hoping to make this a year of the tiger. he powered lsu to the top game

meanwhile, the fate of russian figure indicating fee non-valiyeva hanging in the balance today after she tested positive for a banned heart medication in december. the results of that drug test reported one day after the russian olympic committee won cold in the team ev gold in the team event. the u.s. taking silver. according to the roc, she since tested negative for the drug, including here in beijing. the ioc hopes this issue will be resolved before the women's short program a day away. and shocker on the ice today. team usa men's hockey made of college players, beating the canadian rivals 4-2. the first men's hockey win over canada in 12 years. that win, by the way, over the neighbors to the north is a big

president biden is speaking with russian leader vladimir putin this morning. the first conversation in six weeks. they haven't spoken since december. intelligence shows a march toward war as russia stages military drills near the border. it is moving field hospitals closer to ukraine. secretary of state antony blinken says russia will face severe sanctions. and in phoenix this morning, nine police officers recovering from being shot or wounded in a standoff early friday. the whole thing caught on camera. we want to warn you, this might be disturbing to watch. after an emergency call of a woman shot inside a home, officers were ambushed when arriving at the house while trying to rescue a baby left by the front door. all of the officers and baby survived. the woman who was initially shot an suspected 36-year-old gunman are dead. a happy ending to the story
