runs in the new mono bob event. then mikaela shiffrin back on the mountains. >> i got a feeling on my skis that i wanted, smooth and patient and still strong. >> reporter: her first in a few days of training runs for next week's downhill. yeah. let's get back to the hockey here for a second. you know, it has been 12 years. it is hard to believe, but i looked it up. 12 years since team usa men have beat the canadian team here at the olympics, so they did that overnight. they really kind of cleared out the way to make it through the pool and maybe in a bind quarterfinals for the medal round. kira, it was a bunch of college kids and we didn't know what we were getting, as you mentioned no nhl players this time around. they're fast, they're hungry on the ice. it is something to watch. they're looking good. >> absolutely. reminds you of the miracle team back in the '80s. jay, i would be remiss if i didn't mention your beautiful olympic sweater. i love it.

diplomatic and assistance efforts in support of ukraine's security, democracy and prosperity. the white house also confirmed president biden will talk with russian leader vladimir putin this morning. it will be the first time they've spoken since december 30th. yesterday the president held a call with the nato secretary general, along with eight european leaders, and also met in the situation room with his national security team. >> the russians are in a position to be able to mount a major military action in ukraine any day now, and for that reason we believe that it is important for us to communicate to our allies and partners, to the ukrainians and to the american citizens who are still there. >> just this morning, pentagon press secretary john kirby said the u.s. is temporarily repositioning 160 members of the florida national guard who have been deployed in ukraine since november. those troops will now leave ukraine and go elsewhere in europe. the pentagon also has ordered

another 3,000 u.s. troops to poland in demonstration of its commitment to nato allies. back here in the bay area, police in morgan hill are still searching for the person who fired a gun inside a store. it happened yesterday around 5:30 in front of sun valley market on monterey road. police say several people were in a confrontation with another person and then someone pulled out a gun and fired shots. luckily no one was hit, but the shooter did run away. police say they're reviewing surveillance video for clues. anyone with information is asked to contact morgan hill p.d. and at 7:10 we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up our exclusive interview with governor gavin newsom ahead of next week's big announcement. statewide mask mandates will be lifted and he tells us more about his plans as covid cases continue to fall.

welcome back on this gorgeous saturday morning. a live look from treasure island at the bay bridge towards san francisco. just stunningly beautiful. we've had gorgeous weather the past couple of days and vianey arana says a beautiful weekend is on the way there is a warning from bay area police that gangs are burglarizing neighborhoods across the state from san diego to san mateo county. hillsborough police say they received more than 20 break-in

calls in the past three months. that's compared to just 30 in all of last year. they say gangs from south america are specifically targeting wealthier neighborhoods and usually case the homes before they break in. they say the thieves are mostly after firearms, jewelry and anything else they can sell on the black market. >> well, there's more things to focus on in hillsborough. i mean the homes are multi-, multi-million dollar homes. >> we are locked, loaded, ready for action. yes. >> reporter: camera systems working, alarms? >> yes. >> hillsboro police say the gang of thieves likely is the same group that's been targeting vacant homes in atherton. police ask people to be on the look out for vehicles with two or more men driving slowly thu neighborhoods casing homes and report those cars to police. turning now to our coronavirus coverage, pfizer is pausing its fda application to expand its covid vaccine to kids under the age of 5. this means the two-dose vaccine for young children will not be

available in the next few weeks. pfizer wants more data on the effectiveness of a third dose. they said two doses may not generate a strong enough immune response in young children. data is expected as soon as april. coming next week, changes in the governor's plan as code moves from a pandemic to an endemic. we spoke with governor gavin newsom in an exclusive interview about how to live with the virus. >> what's the community surveillance look like? what's the testing protocols look like? what does our preparedness strategy look like as relates to mitigation? >> the governor says the team will have it mapped out by this coming tuesday, including the masking in public schools. >> we are transforming our public system and moving out of

the pandemic mindset. that includes the masks and that will happen. the question is when. >> as we reported the governor is lifting the statewide mask mandate coming this wednesday, but it doesn't change for schools. students and teachers will still be required to wear masks for now. remember santa clara county is the only county in the bay area keeping its local mask mandate in place. happening now, one north bay county has lifted its restrictions on large gatherings. back in january sonoma county health officials set the 50-person maximum indoor and 100-person maximum outdoor restrictions on gatherings when they saw covid cas,ealth leader now believe the county is past the peak of the winter surge because cases and hospitalizations are declining. now to another school walkout in oakland. this yesterday, as students left oakland tech to protest the district's plan to close or

merge nearly a dozen schools. the closure plan was passed earlier this week. the district contends it has no choice. enrollment is down so it has to close or merge some schools. but opponents say the schools chosen will overwhelmingly impact black and latino students. commuters have another option to ditch the gridlock on highway 101. the new express lanes opened yesterday. they stretch between mountain view and ripple avenue in redwood city. solo drivers can use the lanes for a toll that will rise based on traffic. tolls will be in place from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays. you need a fast pass to use the lanes. a different kind of turkey trot is about to take place in mountain view. wild turkeys have been causing troubles at nasa's ames research center for the past couple of years. nasa ames decided it is time for

too. so overall we will be seeing a beautiful day. lots of sunshine. current temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s. look at san jose, 45 degrees right now. concord, 43. san francisco, 55. so, yes, it is mild, but, it is going to be another warm day. so not much has changed when it comes to the past 24 hours and those temperatures. we have had this high pressure that's been hanging on tough over the region, keeping any real chance of rain out of the bay area. so what are we expecting into this afternoon? well, we will be seeing upper 70s, maybe even a couple of low 80s. look at this. through about 3:00 today, 81 degrees in san jose. 74 in dublin. 72 in san francisco. could get even higher than that in some spots. as we head into sunday, so super bowl sunday, if you have any sort of outdoor plans expect similar conditions again tomorrow. look at san jose, in the 80s. 70s around the bay and the coast. the upper 70s in the interior. it has also been very dry thanks to that high pressure. it has been keeping us dry and bringing elevated fire concerns

because of the dry conditions, warmer temperatures. right now winds are really a factor, but heading into monday things are going to change. this is one thing we are definitely monitoring. we are talking about gusty winds, 30 plus, who, maybe higher than that per hour heading into tuesday as well. that will bring big concerns when it comes to the offshore wind event. if you are heading down to southern california to the big super bowl game tomorrow at sofi stadium, they're under a heat advisory in englewood, which is where sofi stadium is located. in effect until 6:00 p.m. on sunday. could potentially see a new record high set on super bowl sunday, in the mid 80s. the game is at 3:30. at 1:30 they will see temperatures in the mid 80s. it will be sunny and comfortable, but be mindful of that. make sure your friends down there headed to the game or if you are headed to the game, drink plenty of water. the high pressure will begin to weaken heading into the long-range outlook. even when it weakens we are

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas shows us olympic moments making the games one-of-a-kind. >> good morning, kira. there's so much to watch when it comes to the olympics, there's no way you can catch everything. what i love to do is point out a couple of moments in the past week you might have missed but that are totally worth revisiting. first up is perhaps my favorite clip from the olympics so far. it certainly has to be the funniest. russian olympic cross country skier alexander bolshenov won the men's skiathlon. when he jumped up to celebrate he broke the podium. he tried to fix it, couldn't fix it and he jumped up again. there was not stopping his celebration. i promised i have been following the story of an athlete competing in beijing while his wife is expecting the first child in vermont.

wang is in beijing for more on the gold. >> reporter: team usa winning more gold medals in primetime. three days after winning the elusive gold medal, five-time olympian lindsey jacobellis wins gold again with nick baumgartner, a four-time olympian who never won a medal until last night. the two american veterans or as lindsey likes to call herself, seasoned are 36 and 46 years old, making them the oldest medalists in olympic snowboarding history. >> this has been really incredible. i was really happy my body was feeling great, even though i'm exhausted at the end of the day. all of the pain is worth it. >> i was proud to be able to show everyone what i was worth, and i knew if i messed up she could cover for me, but i wanted t i wanted to prove two days ago, and i think i did a out here looking younger than everybody. >> reporter: over to the other mountain, alpine skiing, practice and training for the women last night. the course is 100% artificial

good morning. it is 7:42. we've got a lot to get through today because i'm going to talk about our drive in the rain and what to look forward to ahead in the super bowl forecast. 48 in san jose. we are starting with a couple of high clouds in some spots but mild overall. guess what, it will be warm again today. let's get to the daytime highs. no big changes in the past 24 hours. we've had that high pressure that's been keeping us nice and warm with plenty of sunshine really for the past several days. we broke several daily records during the week. here is a closer look at your hourly temperatures for the day. notice at this time at about 3:30 we will be in the upper 70s for most of the region and, yes, maybe a couple of low 80s for the south bay. for san jose, 81 degrees. heading to the city, 72. still pretty dry. not as windy right now but we expect that to kick up. i will get to that in a second.

sunday's forecast for tomorrow if you are hosting outdoors, it will be beautiful. upper 70s, low 80s as well through the south bay and into the city. look at this, 70 degrees for san francisco. 75 in santa rosa. 76 degrees in livermore. it will be another warm day tomorrow. we have the high pressure that's been hanging out but it will start to weaken heading into monday and tuesday. we will also see the wind kick up thanks to a system that will pass us to our north, bringing an offshore wind event, bringing concern for elevated fire danger.inds very closely. right now southern california is seeing gusty winds as well and record highs, so much so they're under a heat advisory. if you are heading to sofi stadium in southern california which is located in englewood, has the potential of seeing a new record high set on super bowl sunday. i know kickoff is around 3:30, but notice around 1:30, around tailgating hour, it will be in the mid 80s.
