4:31 am
and thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're broadcasting on your television, but we're also live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. here's a live look this morning at sofi stadium, home of the champions, and everyone still buzzing about the super bowl last night. highlights from the game, including two touching moments from players. first, we want to get you started with the forecast here in the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is tracking temperatures. we said a little bit earlier much cooler this week. >> yeah, it's going to be nothing like we had over the weekend and you're going to need a heavier jacket for today. big drop init's going to be win there. this week we will continue with sunny and more comfortable weather, but we're also watching for distant rain chances, maybe toward the end of the month. we are starting out with some dense fog as we head out the door this monday morning. visibility down to a half of a mile in santa rosa, but we're
4:32 am
seeing low clouds drifting around. watch out for that for your morning commute. we're going to be watching dropping temperatures and i'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, that fog may impact the morning commute. >> it will. we got an advisory from chp and an advisory in the north bay, a crash blocking all lanes both directions of highway 160 from the antioch bridge through the north bay. the antioch side is all right, but just under a mile north of the bridge there is a crash involving a big rig and another vehicle, major crash there. and lanes are blocked and no word on when they're going to reopen. it's been going on for a couple of hours. it's a long re-route. if you head over to highway 4 or over to the east through discovery bay and get around, tough getting through the waterways. meanwhile, the rest of traffic flow is moving nicely but there

that has some on campus outraged. if you missed our report ou next hotel stay. according toveby the american hotel association, hotel operators are seeing a 79% increase when it comes to cleaning and housekeeping supplies. 94% say their establishments do not have enough staff. so the bottom line here is your stay might not be what it used to. a separate survey by the associated general contractors of america shows 20% of construction material costs are up. i sat down with scott anderson, a chief economist with the bank of the west, to ask him if there is any relief in sight for us. >> why is this crisis still having an impact on our prices? i mean, do we see an ending in
4:35 am
sight here? >> not yet. we've got another hot inflation report for january and no sign of a slowdown from january's hot price increases, so we're not completely out of the woods yet. i think a lot of this is being driven by very strong demand. we had unprecedented support from both monetary policy, the federal reserve, as well as the pandemic relief bills, and consumers have saved a war chest of excess savings of about $2.7 trillion in the united states, which they can use to spend here. it's really being driven by goods and durable goods, so we're seeing a lot of inflation coming from used and new vehicles, for example, from the pandemic, these vehicle prices are up 88% from april of 2020. so these are some eye-popping price increases. we're seeing them broad-based now across the board. >> wallets are stretched thin.
4:36 am
is there any advice you could give to people to try to make things work out for the best? >> well, just be really aware of the prices you're paying. if you're going to the supermarket you're probably seeing 13%, 14% increase in things like eggs, milk. you've got to be price conscience in this sort of environment and you've really got to be paying attention to where your prices are going up. and look at a budget, try to budget for things like food, gasoline every month and see if you can stick to that budget. that will help you weather the storm until we get prices under control. >> seems like a lot of people are being outpriced by their budget. scott, thank you so much for your time. i spoke with anderson about so much more, including home prices, the cost of vacations, even airfare. you can watch the full video on our streaming app, download it now or roku, amazon tv or apple.

>> next on the bay, the reason one super bowl ad may have worked a little too well. >> plus, metaverse, a look at the insurance claims now being filed because of damages made in the virtual world. we'll explain after the break. >> and as you're waking up and heading out, we can see low clouds over the south bay right now. san jose with low visibility in some spots and we're going to see clouds linger with our temperatures much cooler than we've had recently. we're going to talk about that coming up next. >> and we're just talking about this crash in fremont. more clarification from chp, they claim right now the crash and debris is affecting all lanes of southbound 880, just past dakota road, heading down toward thornton. i'm going to check things out and we'll bring you the latest coming up.

4:40 am
happy valentine's day. right now it's 4:40, as you're waking up heading out the door, santa rosa starting out at 47. it's also foggy and you're going to have to deal with that on your way to work. we'll start to see peeks of sunshine, but a very slow warm-up in temperatures, as we're only headed for the upper 50s and low 60s today. we'll talk more about that and when we warm up again in our forecast in a few minutes.
4:41 am
>> and as we look over at fremont, i do see some slowing on the map. the live look shows you 880 a little farther from the crash. there may be a traffic break between dakota and thornton. traffic is still flowing. we're watching south 880 just before you get to thornton for the crash which may be affecting all lanes. meanwhile, let's see if we're in the red with bertha. >> we are. thanks, mike. good morning, i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. not much love for stocks this morning on wall street. we are set to open lower, although not as low as it looked an hour ago. investors are tracking tensions between russia and ukraine. this follows a rocky week for the markets, which came under pressure from hotter than expected inflation numbers on thursday and fears of that russian invasion of ukraine. the dow tumbling more than 500 points on friday as the white

house warned an attack could begin any day. oil prices are trading at more than seven-year highs and that's feeding into prices at the pump on worries that we could see a possible supply disruption. russia is one of the world's largest oil producers. also in focus this week, we're going to be watching for a report on inflation on the wholesale level with producer prices, we'll look at retail sales, unemployment and get a bunch of housing data as well. meantime, coin base made its super bowl debut with an ad featuring a bouncing qr code. folks like me thought that looks kind of boring, but it actually might have worked too well. the code brought viewers to a promotional site offering a limited time offer of $15 worth of free bitcoin to new customers, along with a $3 million giveaway. the site quickly crashed after the ad aired during the game. coin base tweeting out a photo of a dog saying, well, that was

more popular than we thought. meantime, a word of warning, if you're visiting the metaverse, an insurance firm says it saw a 31% increase in claims involving vr headsets last year. the average claim for vh-related damages was about $880. most of the incidents involved cracked tv screens. aviva says it's processed a number of claims already this year. coincidently, oculus topped the charts on christmas day, and could be in for a bit of a crash if they are not careful. that would probably be me if i did it. >> you're going to have to have a room in your house with nothing in it so you can play. >> thank you so much. 4:43 this morning. a ransomware attack on a bay area team. we're going to tell you what a

4:47 am
san francisco and oakland right around 5 1/2 inches below normal, lake berryessa is close to 8 inches. it's tough. >> it is tough, and now we're going on day 38 without any rain. and so the last time we did have rain was january 7th, and so we see all of the dry days that we had here on the calendar and most likely this will continue. it will be cooler and windy and we're watching dry offshore winds, which tend to dry out things even more. take a look at some of these numbers. now san jose starting to slip into a rainfall deficit for the water year. these numbers go back to october 1st and we are seeing still some big surpluses in some spots, but each day that has continued to decline. wh 79% of normal.
4:48 am
we've also seen this go down significantly with warm weather, the snow continues to melt. but there may be a little bit of light snow in the forecast going into the next few days. we can see the clouds that are over northern california right now, moving into the sierra as this cold air pushes down. it may produce light snow flurries for the sierra today and early tomorrow. the rest of the week is looking dry. we may see a change in the weather pattern that could bring back a chance of showers maybe by february 22nd, 23rd. there will be a low coming down that will bring in much cooler temperatures and possibly some scattered showers. but that is looking out beyond the seven-day forecast. so taking a look at still the dry weather that continues today and a huge drop in temperatures. you're going to have gusts at about 25-30 miles per hour in the north bay and along the coast. tomorrow slightly milder and we continue on the warming trend
4:49 am
through the end of the week. we'll have cooler air dropping in once again, so between saturday and sunday we're going to see temperatures dropping once again. mike, you were looking at some breaking news on the nimitz. >> yeah, exactly. this has all lanes blocked for a short time as you travel south through fremont. we'll show you the map and you see the closure mark on the map. there's slowing at thornton and heading south to just past mallorie where there's reportedly a crash. it was only blocking one lane but i believe crews are trying to move vehicles to the shoulder. when you can move the vehicles that's usually a good sign there are no major injuries. that will slow you south of the dumbarton bridge. on the peninsula side, everything is moving smoothly. travel times toward the bay bridge, nice, easy drive. still a crash up at sherman island north of the antioch

bridge. the san francisco 49ers have been sacked by a ransomware attack. the team says it recently became aware of the network security incident that disrupted the corporate i.t. network. a ransom gang claiming that it stole the team's financial data and recently posted some of that on the dark web. >> they let you know that they've got your data and they may even put more stuff out there on the dark web and let people know that they have even more data, and at that point they may ask for a ransom. >> so far the cyber criminals haven't publicly asked for ransom. they've notified law enforcement and hired security firms to help. the team said, quote, we have no indication that this incident involves systems outside of our corporate network, such as those connected to levi's stadium operations or ticketholders. victory for the rams.
